We will be having a classroom cleaning day on Saturday, Sept. 5th from 9:30-? to get our classrooms ready for our first day of classes on Sept. 13th. All cleaning supplies will be supplied, but we need lots of hand to clean the many areas we use throughout the school year☺! We will meet in the basement and branch out from there. Questions??Ccontact Valerie at the office. Common myths about Elementary RE: Am I committed to every Sunday for the whole school year? No. It is a team approach—our goal is 2 catechists and 2 aides to give flexibility each Sunday so that only 2 of the 4 need to be present each week. We also have a sub list to contact in the event that 2 of the 4 are not available on a given Sunday. Do I need to be a parent to help out? It doesn’t matter. Many times, our parents are the busiest ones. Most of the time our confirmed high school teens, single adults, empty-nesters or retired adults have more time on their hands to devote to our parish children. Parents are the #1 Catechists for their children but it is wonderful for the kids to get continuing education outside of their home life. However, it is also a strong testament for kids to see their parents in the classrooms, showing that RE is important to them too. Free childcare is offered too!! What if I don’t know it all? Aug. Sept. Sept. Sept. Sept. SECOND COLLECTIONS: 30, Social Ministries 6, Twin Parish in Haiti 13, Contingency Collection 20, Religious Education Collection 27, Retired Religious Collection FINANCIAL BOX SCORE New Fiscal Year July 1 ,2015 There is no one that knows it all when it comes to the Catholic faith and it’s teachings. We are all challenged to continue to learn throughout our entire lives and this is a great opportunity for you to learn as well. Many catechist and aides have told me they learn so much each year because they are challenged to answer the questions of their students! All Catechists should be confirmed and practicing their Catholic faith. However, aides, and hall monitors are 2 volunteer opportunities at our parish that you do not have to be confirmed or Catholic to help. We want to encourage all to feel like there is a role they can take in this ministry! Religious Ed Training opportunities: Children’s Church —Saturday, Sept. 5th at 10:00 am Elementary RE—Thursday, August 27th at 6:30 pm Tuesday, Sept. 1st at 6:30 pm Wednesday, Sept. 2nd at 6:30 pm Pope Francis said, “The church is called to be always the open house of the Father. Everyone can participate in some way in the Church’s life; all can be part of the community.” This was said at the Vatican by the Holy Father on August 5, 2015. This is very timely as our parish’s Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA) will begin in September. The RCIA is the Catholic Church’s program to assist individuals to join in the life of the Catholic Church. Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church uses this program for those who have never been baptized, as well as for baptized Christians seeking to become members of the Catholic Church. If you, a friend or a family member wants more information about the Catholic faith, please call (434-4341) or email ([email protected] ) at the church office and leave a message for Deacon Paul. Attention all teens! We are very much in need of about 4 more volunteers for our 10:00 nursery. We try and schedule you about once a month along with another teen and adult coordinator to help care for our little ones so their parents can worship with fewer distractions. We also have the same opportunity but helping with our preschoolers and kindergarteners in our Children’s Church program that begins mid-September! If you might be interested in helping out in either of these programs, please contact Valerie at 540-383-3915 (text me or call) or email me at [email protected]. At Home With the Word scripture reading guides for the 2016 Liturgical Year are now available for sale after Mass. $8 per copy, or $10 for large print (limited supply). Get yours today! 3 BLESSED SACRAMENT CATHOLIC CHURCH HARRISONBURG, VA The Council of Catholic Women is sponsoring a Fall Bazaar on Saturday, September 19 from 9 am to 3 pm. We invite anyone who has a product to sell to participate. We know that we have many talented parishioners who produce arts and crafts who would like the opportunity to sell them. Or if you are in the business of selling a product from your home, like cosmetics, jewelry, Amway, etc., you are welcome. Parish groups, that would like to raise money, can work together to produce a product for sale. Many thanks to all who have donated the wonderful fresh produce to the Food Pantry. Our clients really do appreciate receiving "gifts from gardens" for their families. We also wish to thank the following for their kind donations: Staff of Life for their incredible breads; Friendly City Coop for all their produce & specialty foods and Bella Gelato & Pastries for their gourmet baked goods. All of these donations help our families feel there is hope as others care enough to provide them with specialty items they could not afford. We also wish to thank the anonymous donors who generously give us many different types of produce and financial support, yet wish to go unrecognized. Spaces will be available for $50. For more information contact Carol Miller at 867-5263 or [email protected]. Ladies of the Parish: Our first 2015/2016 meeting for the Council of Catholic Women will be Monday, September 14 at 1 pm in the music room of the church basement. We will go over the calendar for the year, plan some events and then have light refreshments. All female parishioners are invited to attend. On September 3, we will be helping at Friendship House. If you would like to volunteer please let us know. Questions? Please call Meg Layman at (253) 691-1518. To All, our heartfelt thanks for helping us with your donations !!! Tickets available to the Papal Mass in Washington, DC Moms of small children: Our open play in the church nursery will be starting up again after Labor Day. Come chat with other moms while our children play. We will start Thursday, September 10 from 10-11:30am. Following there will be a kid-friendly rosary in the church. The Diocese of Richmond has been allocated a limited number of tickets for the Papal Mass and canonization of Blessed Junipero Serra on Wednesday, September 23, 2015 at the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception in Washington, DC. (Please note, this Mass will be in Spanish) Tickets will be made available through a lottery drawing open to any parishioner within the Diocese of Richmond. There is no cost to enter the lottery and the tickets are provided free of charge. Each lottery winner will be allotted two tickets to the event. Winners will be announced on September 10, 2015. To enter the drawing and for more details, visit www.cdrcmfl.org or contact the Diocesan Center for Marriage, Family, and Life at 804-622-5109. FLOW--Coming this Fall FLOW (Adult Faith Formation) will offer Fr. Robert Barron's "Priest, Prophet, King", a biblically based series. Through this study, you will better understand Jesus, become more familiar with Scripture, and realize your own priestly, prophetic, and kingly mission. This series will start the week of October 11th and run for six consecutive weeks, being offered on Tuesday mornings, Thursday evenings, and Friday mornings. Registration for this program will be held at church after Masses the weekends of Sept. 26-27 and Oct. 3-4. There will be a charge for the study guide, payable at the time of registration. The Knights of Columbus Council at Our Lady of the Valley in Luray regrets that they had to cancel the bus to the Pope’s Mass at the Basilica on September 23rd and apologizes for any inconvenience. Because of traffic, security measures, etc. the bus would not be able to park any closer than several miles away. Also, even access to the outside grounds of the Basilica and Catholic University requires a ticket. IF anyone would win a ticket to this Mass in the lottery, parking at a suburban Virginia Metro stop such as Vienna (Orange Line) and taking the train to the CUA stop (Red line) would be the best bet, although parking may be limited and the trains will be crowded. A Seminar on the State of Marriage and Family in America Today Pope Saint John Paul II wrote, “The family in the modern world, as much as and perhaps more than any other institution, has been beset by the many profound and rapid changes that have affected society and culture.” Join us for a seminar on the current state of marriage and the family in America today led by parishioner Skip Burzumato, former associate director of the National Marriage Project at UVA and currently a professor in the department of sociology at Bridgewater College. This two-day seminar will take place on Friday, Sept 11, 6-8pm and Saturday, Sept 12, 9am-noon. We will begin with a potluck supper at 6:00 on Friday evening. This event is open to all single and married adults, grandparents and older teenagers. Babysitting will be provided. Sign up today at the table by the water fountain. Is the Diocese planning a pilgrimage to the Pope’s visit to Philadelphia? (an outdoor Mass which can accommodate more people is planned) Yes, they are currently planning an overnight pilgrimage to Philadelphia for the weekend of September 26-27 to participate in the main events with the Holy Father. The cost has not yet been finalized for the pilgrimage. Space will be very limited and will likely be assigned by lottery. Those interested in being included in the lottery for participation in this pilgrimage should complete the online form. (See URL below) This is not a guarantee of attendance, but only those on this list will be included in the lottery. There will be a cost for this pilgrimage, but that has not yet been determined. More details will be forthcoming.- See more at: http://www.cdrcmfl.org/ai1ec_event/world-meeting-of -families/?instance_id=449#sthash.s0xQIFC0.dpuf 4 22ND SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME AUGUST 30, 2015 THIS WEEK AT BLESSED SACRAMENT SATURDAY, AUGUST 29 8:00-10:00 am, Kerygma Retreat, Johnston Hall 11:00 am, English Baptism 3:30-4:30 pm, Confessions, chapel 4:30 pm, Rosary, Sanctuary 5:00 pm, Vigil Mass for Sunday 5:30 pm, Clase por bautismo en Español, basement JMU CATHOLIC CAMPUS MINISTRY regular academic year schedule has resumed; daily Mass at 5 pm Monday, Thursday and Friday at CCM House, 12:30 pm Wednesday, at Taylor Hall 405 on campus. No importa. 13. Después de las Misa 1 pm. VIRTUS is a program created by the National Catholic Risk Retention Group in the United States with a "Protecting God's Children" component that combats sexual abuse of children in the Church. It is currently in use in over 80 dioceses in the United States. VIRTUS focuses on educating teachers, parents, and other adults who interact with children about sexual abuse and providing them with information to help prevent abuse. This takes place in 'awareness sessions' led by trained facilitators. The awareness sessions consist of videos, worksheets, and discussions. The videos incorporate interviews with both victims and convicted perpetrators. VIRTUS is a required element for anyone who plans to become involved in a ministry that comes in contact with children or youth. It is also a great resource for parents and grandparents!!! To register go to www.virtusonline.org and follow the prompts. There is no cost for the program and free childcare can be provided.
