In 2010 we celebrated our centennial anniversary, and coincidentally, after the much-awaited fête, came a two-year period of inactivity. Well, at least for Paroles. Anyway, storm or no storm, we now break the silence. In this issue we continue with the tradition of publishing our undergrad students’ thesis abstracts and photos of last semester’s most important events, like the Lantern Parade—we all know why it was extra special for us—and Graduation, to name a couple. Aside from the grad pictures, we have also included the Valedictory Speech delivered at the Pagtatapos ng KAL 2012 by our very own Primrose Simpliciano. On voice and poetry, we have Jad Monsod’s analysis; on the use of the term culture in teaching, we feature Karl Deang’s musings; and finally, on adequacy of textbook activities, we have included a review by yours truly. We hope this issue rekindles our desire to update each other on what we’re all currently working on. ¡Que lo disfrutéis! Anna Sibayan The Past Sem in Lomo 28 29 30 JUNE 2012 3 Abstracts on LITERARY AND CULTURAL STUDIES LA DÉCONSTRUCTION DE L’ARCHÉTYPE DE LA FEMME FATALE AU SEIN DE QUATRE FILMS FRANÇAIS Rona Concepcion Ma. Criselda Hingada Roselle Marcos Adviser: Mr. Richard Karl Deang LA LENGUA DEL HUMOR EN ¡BIENVENIDO MISTER MARSHALL!; PEPI, LUCI, BOM Y OTRAS CHICAS DEL MONTÓN; Y TORRENTE, EL BRAZO TONTO LA LEY Joanne Clairoll Y. Abellar Michelle Roxanne P. Clareza Adviser: Prof. Fernando Ramos Despite the achievements of feminism, inequality between women and men persists, and this is starkly portrayed in films that feature the archetype of the femme fatale, a woman hailed as the champion of feminism. This undergraduate research is a deconstruction of the femme fatale as both emancipated and subjugated as an identity category. Using deconstructive, feminist and psychoanalytic criticism, the thesis is a study of the femme fatale as she is represented in the French films La Femme Nikita (1990), Baise-moi (2001), Un long dimanche de fiancailles (2004) and Hors de Prix (2006). It discusses the identity politics of the femme fatale in a patriarchal society where she is subjected to various injustices. This objectification is further examined through the male gaze theory, which unveils how the body as a mere object of desire enables the femme fatale to exercise control over man, which subsequently leads to a scrutiny of the power relations between the femme fatale and man, and who between the two possesses the power. The study shows that while the femme fatale is emancipated through her ability to compete with men and the power of her body, her intellect and her charms on men; she remains oppressed through physical, sexual and psychological objectification. P The thesis revolves around the interrelationship between language, humor and the society in three comedy films that belong to distinct socio-historical periods of Spain. The researchers examined the films – ¡Bienvenido Mister Marshall! (Welcome Mister Marshall!) by Luís García Berlanga, produced during the dictatorship of General Francisco Franco; Pepi, Luci, Bom y otras chicas del montón (Pepi, Luci, Bom and Other Girls on the Heap) by Pedro Almodóvar, made during the postdictatorship period; and Torrente, el brazo tonto de la ley (Torrente, the Stupid Arm of the Law) by Santiago Segura, which was created during the contemporary period – with the purpose of providing a more concrete justification related to the links between language, humor and the society. More specifically, the researchers analyzed the aforementioned films in two levels: the first being an exploration of the socio-historical context to which each film belongs respectively, while the second focuses on the movies’ linguistic aspect through of an analysis of ten (10) of each film’s funny lines and dialogues. P 4 PAROLES LA REPRÉSENTATION DES BEURS DANS SIX FILMES EN FRANCE Joan Clarice Caccam Nico Angelo Pili Darryl Santos Adviser: Mr. Richard Karl Deang This study aims to further comprehend post-colonial France concerning the beur population or the second generation immigrants of African descent which is a result of the various waves of immigration in the country. Immigration is a worldwide phenomenon which is inevitable and brings a myriad of questions involving unemployment, integration, discrimination, and oppression. With the second generation Arabs in France and the growing debates and issues on integration, the creation of the term beur marked the emergence of a different type identity which continues to thread on the ambiguous lines. Our endeavor is to discover how they represent themselves across beur films in France by answering the questions: In the sphere of the republican policy existing in France which demands the need for a nation-state and the integration of the immigrants, who are the beurs in their own eyes? Why is there a conflict between the French republican policy and the beurs? Following policies for a nation-state how and where do they situate themselves in France? Using the theories of Hybridity by Homi Bhabha, Oppression and Emancipation by Christian Bay, and Strategic Essentialisme by Gayantri Spivak, we aim to analyze six beurs films which are all produced in the 21st century and directed by beur film directors in France, thus having a more recent background and self-representation of the film directors. These films consist of Le Grande Voyage (2004), Beur Blanc Rouge (2005), Il était une fois dans l'Oued (2005), La Graine et le Mulet (2007), Française (2008), and Adieu Gary (2008). Then, as a completion of our analyses, this study concludes that the beurs are hybrids who essentialize themselves as oppressed in order to convey their political motivation to be wholly accepted in France. P LA METAMORPHOSE DANS LE CORPS ÉTRANGER OU L’AVENTURE TRANSSEXUEL DE MIRIAM DECHEVRAINS* Hender Gercio Adviser: Mr. Richard Karl Deang Transsexual-themed writings serve as contemporary expressions of the “literature of the metamorphosis.” In these texts, the problem of identity becomes evident when subjects transition from one sex to the other. Using the phenomenological approach, a deconstruction of Myriam Dechevrens’ autobiographical work Le Corps étranger ou l'Aventure transsexuelle is performed to describe in detail the protagonist’s transformation as it unfolds on three key levels: language, body and the perception of the other. In contrast with an identity that is externally supplied, Dechevrens chooses to validate her selfdesignated identity, that of being a woman. Metamorphosis is therefore portrayed as the expression of the transsexual character’s willpower to appropriate language, her body, and the perception of others, and to eventually arrive at a body and a sex/gender that are freely chosen and assumed. P *This work was nominated for the Gawad Antonio M. Abad for Best Undergraduate Thesis of the College of Arts and Letters. JUNE 2012 5 LA DIALÉCTICA FRANQUISTA EN LAS PELÍCULAS RAZA, ¡BIENVENIDO, MISTER MARSHALL! Y VIRIDIANA Regine Jessica Dumrique Abuel Leah Japson Sumbeling Adviser: Prof. Fernando Ramos The objectives of this study are: to know how the film industry was under the censorship during the dictatorship of Francisco Franco; to recognize if the censorship did affect the films produced during the said period; and to identify the significant effects in society when the films were produced. Apart from these, the researchers want to give importance to the elements of cinematography and how artists of that time were able to produce films and movies considered as classics in the Spanish culture despite the repression that the dictatorship brought. To do so, the researchers first looked for movies that reflected what was actually happening during the regime of Francisco Franco. They chose three films which had interesting and mixed critiques from Spain and abroad – one from the forty’s, another from the fifty’s and another one from the sixty’s. The three films that were chosen were Raza by José Luis Sáenz de Heredia (1942), ¡Bienvenido Mister Marshall! by Luis García Berlanga (1953) and Viridiana by Luis Buñuel (1961). The researchers studied the history of Spain under Franco using books, various studies and published articles. The information from the research served necessary to help in the film analysis. For each film, the proponents chose six to ten scenes which showed what the researchers have understood in the history of Franco. To analyze the films better, they used Textual Analysis and the Semiotics Theory. When the scenes were chosen, they transcribed the dialogues and identified the actions of the characters which seemed significant. The dialogues, lines and actions that were also related to the history of the regime and the Francoist rhetoric were also included. P LA CONTRACEPTION ET L’EMANCIPATION DES FEMMES : UNE ANALYSE FEMINISTE POSTCOLONIALE DES ROMANS DE SIMONE DE BEAUVOIR ET DE LUALHATI BAUTISTA Madelaine Q. Co Kathryn Kristina T. Jose Maria Kriselda J. Sebastian Adviser: Mr. Richard Karl Deang This thesis aims to establish that the novels of Simone de Beauvoir and Lualhati Bautista prove that the free distribution of contraceptives is necessary to improve the lives of the women in the postcolonial setting of the Philippines. We believe that the situation in France during the late 1960s wherein contraception was pushed to be a right is relevant to the situation of the Philippines, even with the postcolonial influences, from the 1970s to date. We intend to prove this by analysing the books La femme rompue and Les belles images of Simone de Beauvoir and Gapô, Dekada ’70, and Bata, Bata…Paano ka Ginawa? of Lahat Baustista. We studied these novels using the materialist feminist perspective which considers women’s material conditions and their capability to produce as their representation in society. We started by separating the works by author which will allow comparison between the two contexts Att the end of the analysis. Then we divided further the analysis of each novel into three social aspects in order for us to do a thorough study of the texts. Having organized the flow of our analysis, we selected quotations from each work which will help us validate our hypothesis and demonstrate the implications of the necessity of contraceptives in the post-colonial Philippines. After analysing and comparing the situations implied by our corpus, we concluded that the two different contexts have, indeed, similar situations and that these situations demand the right to contraception thus justifies our position in this thesis. P 6 PAROLES LOS HISPANISMOS EN LOS KUNDIMAN Katherine Pearl E. Rubio Primrose Pauline R. Simpliciano Adviser: Prof. Karina Santillan This study is a collection and analysis of the hispanismos encountered in the lyrics of the Kundiman from 1800 to 1990. The researchers gathered a total of eighty-six (86) songs from various composers. The study also provides an overview of the development and evolution of the Kundiman. The presence of the hispanismos was analyzed with the use of different tables that show the origin of the words, the recurring hispanismos throughout time and the themes of the songs. The researchers classified the Kundiman songs into three periods: Traditional, Classical and Contemporary in order to analyze the existing hispanismos in the lyrics and to compare them through time. The hispanismos were identified as well as the linguistic processes that they have undergone. Experts like Elena Mirano and Ramos Santos share their views regarding the characteristics and influence of the Kundiman. Mirano, in her article entitled, “The Kundiman: More than a Plaintive Love Song”, says that the Kundiman has a form that is exceptionally filipino. Moreover Santos, an ethnomusicologist from the College of Music in the University of the Philippines, affirms that the Kundiman was not influenced by other culture. In accordance with what Mirano and Santos said, the objective of this study is to confirm the presence of an influence, specifically the Spanish influence, in the lyrics of the Kundiman. Taking into account the 86 songs classified into three periods, the researchers noted that the majority of the hispanismos belong to the Traditional Kundiman. Many of these words are related to weapons and the revolution. Some words refer to clothing. From the Classical Kundiman to the Contemporary Kundiman, the re is a noted decline in the appearance of the hispanismos. However, words pertaining to religion still exist. The researchers confirmed that the hispanismos reveal the different preoccupations of the three periods. The Traditional Kundiman expresses the love for the country while the Classical Kundiman is more concerned with the intense love for a loved one. This preoccupation on romantic love continues in the Contemporary Kundiman. In addition, the researchers observed that there are hispanismos that recur through time. They also noted the linguistic processes that occurred in the hispanismos. The researchers recommend further investigation on the hispanismos in the Kundiman through the symbolism of the words. This is to have more knowledge about the Filipino culture. It is also recommended to do more investigation on the hispanismos in other genres of music or the Philippine literature in general. P JUNE 2012 7 Abstracts on TRANSLATION STUDIES The results of this research serve as a reference for further studies on the different applications of the procedures of translation of Vinay and Darbelent. Moreover, this research can also help in the appreciation of the Filipino language and in the promotion of the primacy of Palawan culture. P LES MANIFESTATIONS DES PROCÉDÉS DE TRADUCTION DE VINAY ET DARBELNET DANS LA VERSION FILIPINO DE KUDAMAN : UNE EPOPE PALAWAN CHANTEE PAR USUJ Sandi Araquil Ray Johansson Fabros Aicel Mae Alvarez Adviser: Mr. Camillo Antonio Nogoy The book, Kudaman : une épopée palawan chantée par Usuj, a self-translated work by Nicole Revel-Macdonald includes the Philippine culture and literature. In order to determine how the translation procedures of Vinay and Darbelnet are manifested in the translated book, the researchers aim to explain the probable reasons of the usage of the procedures in filling the gaps between the original and translated text. By using Jean-Paul Vinay’s and Jean Darbelnet’s three plans of external stylistics in doing a descriptive study of the translation, the researchers found out that the seven translation procedures of translation (borrowing, calque, literal translation, transposition, modulation, equivalence, and adaptation) were used because there were French terms and expressions which were unclear and not-existent in Filipino or vice versa. The researchers found that because of the cultural difference between the source language and the target language and due to the fact that the translated book is a product of self-translation, the dominant procedure used in the translation is equivalence. L'OCCORRENZA DEI TERMINI TECNOLOGICI SUI GIORNALI ITALIANI CHE SONO TRADOTTI USANDO I PROCESSI DI TRADUZIONE CALCO E PRESTITO Ava Geraldine Cudilla Adviser: Prof. Emmanuel Luis Romanillos This is a study of the occurrences of technological terms used on Italian newspapers which underwent the translation processes, calque and borrowing. The researcher collected calque and borrowing terms from 52 articles on four Italian newspapers: “La Stampa”, “Corriere della Sera”, “Il Messaggero” and “La Repubblica”. The discovered terms are grouped in different categories. The analysis discusses the reasons why these terms are used, the number of times these terms occur on the newspaper and the newly discovered terms. The findings justify the hypothesis of the researcher that in the language of information technology, there's a linguistic gap in the Italian language so the use of calque and borrowing translation is the solution to avoid this gap. P 8 PAROLES LE PROCÉDÉ D’ EMPRUNT DANS LA TRADUCTION DE LUÇON ET MINDANAO D’EMILIO AGUILAR CRUZ Karla Banayat Katherine Camille Abby Elizan Divina Trisha Parungao L’ADAPTATION ET LA TRADUCTION LITTERALE: LES DEUX PROCÉDÉS DE TRADUCTION APPLIQUES DANS LA TRADUCTION RELAIS DE LA CANTATRICE CHAUVE D’EUGENE IONESCO Jamie Isabelle Arellano Gianna Faye De Leon Lovey Ann Marquez Adviser: Prof. Erwin Thaddeus Bautista This study examines the text Luçon et Mindanao written by Duc d’Alençon and translated into English by Emilio Aguilar Cruz. It provides an analysis of the translation of culture-bound terms. The researchers based their analysis on the translation procedures theorized by Jean-Paul Vinay and Jean Darbelnet, as well as the categories of cultural words by Peter Newmark. The study focuses on borrowing as the dominant procedure used in the translation of culture-bound terms in the text. The culture-bound terms are classified according to the categories of cultural words by Newmark: (1) ecology and geography, (2) material culture, (3) social culture, (4) organizations, customs, activities, procedure and concepts, and (5) gestures and habits. In analyzing the culture-bound terms, the researchers observed that the Spanish colonization in the Philippines influenced the languages of both cultures. With regard to cultural words, they noticed that the majority of these words are Spanish loanwords. After analyzing the data, the researchers conclude that borrowing is the dominant procedure used in the translation of culture-bound terms in the text. The researchers found out that borrowing was used in translating certain categories of culture-bound terms, namely categories 1, 2, 3 and 5. P Adviser: Prof. Erwin Thaddeus Bautista This thesis focuses mainly on the relay translation of La Cantatrice Chauve, an absurd theatre play written by Eugène Ionesco. In the course of the study, the researchers observed the application of both literal and adaptation procedures of Vinay and Darbelnet for The Bald Soprano and Ang Sopranong Kalbo respectively. Certainly, changes in the use of translation procedures have occurred which were brought about by problems and difficulties encountered in rendering the text from one culture to another. Moreover, the concepts proposed by Peter Newmark shed light on the reasons behind the changes in procedures. Indeed, this phenomenon has realized the principal purpose of translation which is the effective transmission of a message from the source language to the target language, taking into account the linguistic and extralinguistic aspects. P JUNE 2012 9 LES MANIFESTATIONS DES PROCÉDÉS DE L’ADAPTATION DANS LA TRADUCTION DES MOTS CULTURELS DANS LES PIECES DE THEATRE WAITING FOR GODOT PAR SAMUEL BECKETT ET PAGHIHINTAY KAY GODO PAR ROLANDO TINIO Sharmaine Marmitan Carlo Nicklaus Salazar Anna Marie Villajin Adviser: Mr. Camillo Antonio Nogoy In this thesis the researchers aim to prove that the translators used the adaptation procedure in translating the cultural bound terms and expressions from the play « Waiting for Godot » par Samuel Beckett et « Paghihintay kay Godo » par Rolando Tinio. We presented a table containing the cultural bound terms and expressions in French, English and Filipino. We referred to the work of Vinay and Darbelneton the adaptation procedure and the study made by Monia Bayar about the three classifications of the adaptation procedure. In addition, we consulted the work of Peter Newmark to classify the cultural bound terms and expressions into five groups. Finally, we found out that the adaptation procedure was the most dominant translation procedure used in translating the cultural bound terms and expressions in the play. P LES MANIFESTATIONS DE LA MODULATION ET DE LA TRADUCTION LITTÉRALE DANS LES TRADUCTIONS DE STUART GILBERT ET ROGELIO SICAT DE HUIS CLOS DE JEAN-PAUL SARTRE Joshua Michael P. Benitez Abbygail M. Suria Adviser: Mr. Camillo Antonio Nogoy The study of relay translation in the Philippines has been given little attention in the previous decades. However, it has been present since the 18th century, drawing its beginnings from the Spanish colonial era. Jean-Paul Sartre’s famous play, Huis Clos, has been translated to different languages. A notable translation is that of Stuart Gilbert’s rendition, entitled No Exit, and acclaimed Filipino writer Rogelio Sicat’s Filipino version, Walang Kawala. In this study, the researchers analyzed these texts using Jean-Paul Vinay and Jean Darbelnet’s translation procedures of direct and oblique translation to identify the methods used by the translators. The results of this study show that the translation of Huis Clos to English used the modulation procedure the most and literal translation was the most utilized in the translation of No Exit to Filipino. Further studies may be done in this field of study as there is an abundance of Filipino writers who have contributed in sharing to the Filipino readership the masterpieces and classic works of foreign authors. P 10 PAROLES Abstracts on LANGUAGE TEACHING AND LINGUISTICS ANALYSE DESCRIPTIVE DES ERREURS DE LA PRONONCIATION DES VOYELLES FRANÇAISES DES ÉTUDIANTS DES COURS AVANCÉS DE L'UNIVERSITÉ DES PHILIPPINES DILIMAN AYANT LE FILIPINO COMME LANGUE MATERNELLE Rina Kathleen C. Baratang Mikhail George P. Escalante Stephanie Grace V. Matela Adviser: Prof. Teodoro Vera Cruz Errors offer a glimpse into a learner’s development and progress in his acquisition of a language. Given that, this study aims to obtain and describe empirical data on the vowel pronunciation errors committed by a given population of learners of French who have Filipino as their mother tongue. This study has been limited to selected Filipino university-level students who are in the advanced stages of learning French as a foreign language. The students were made to read aloud a series of words taken from the books, Phonétique en dialogues and Pronunciation of French: Articulation and Intonation, while their utterances were recorded. These recordings were then transcribed into the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA), taking special note of the mispronounced phonemes, which phonemes were used in place of them, and the changes in speech production that produced those errors. At the conclusion of our analysis we have found that: the most frequently mispronounced vowels were /oe/, /ø/, and /ɛ/; and that two vowels, namely /i/ and / /, have been successfully transferred. The most frequently committed errors are changes in vowel height. P ANÁLISIS DE LOS ERRORES DE LOS ESTUDIANTES EN EL NIVEL INTERMEDIO DE ESPAÑOL EN LA UNIVERSIDAD DE FILIPINAS DILIMAN EN EL USO DE LOS TIEMPOS PASADOS, EL PRETÉRITO INDEFINIDO Y EL PRETÉRITO IMPERFECTO Danielle Marie D.J. Gahol Jennifer Jane A. Jamora Adviser: Prof. Ana Maria Yglopaz This study focuses in the analysis of the errors of students in the intermediate level of Spanish from the University of the Philippines Diliman in the use of the two past tenses, pretérito indefinido and pretérito imperfect, excluding other grammatical errors. The objective of the study is to identify the types of errors that students commit in the use of the two past tenses and the factors that contribute in committing these errors. It also aims to identify the most problematic or most difficult among the distinct uses of the two past tenses and finally, to determine which past tense is used more frequently. To prove the hypothesis that the confusion of the students with regards to the distinction between the two past tenses is normally caused by the interference of their maternal language, Filipino, or their secondary language which is English, the researchers facilitated a written exam to the classes of Spanish 12-13 during the second semester of AY 2011-2012 which consists of a total of 54 students. To conclude, the results of the written exam supported two out of the three hypotheses of the researchers. They discovered other types of errors and were able to explain the causes of each. This study is useful for the learning process of the students and can help them to avoid committing the same errors. Meanwhile, this can help the professors in improving their methods of teaching. P JUNE 2012 11 UN ESTUDIO COMPARATIVO DE LAS ACTITUDES Y LAS MOTIVACIONES DE LOS ESTUDIANTES QUE SE ESPECIALIZAN EN ESPAÑOL Y LOS ESTUDIANTES QUE NO SE ESPECIALIZAN EN ESPAÑOL HACIA EL APRENDIZAJE DE LA LENGUA ESPAÑOLA EN LAS CLASES INTEGRADAS DE ESPAÑOL 10-15 EN LA UNIVERSIDAD DE FILIPINAS Alya Monina B. Rodriguez Jameela M. Perez Adviser: Prof, Teodoro Maranan This thesis focuses on the attitudes and motivations of Spanish majors and Non-Spanish majors towards learning the Spanish language in their integrated classes in the University of the Philippines. The researchers’ main objective is to compare and contrast the attitudes and motivations of the majors and non-majors for them to be able to identify the similarities and differences between the two groups. Specifically, the study determines if the attitudes of the students towards the Spanish language and the Spanishspeaking people are positive or negative, if their desire to learn is high or low, if their motivations are instrumental or integrative in nature, and if their motivational intensity is high or low. Generally, the study determines if there are significant similarities and differences among the attitudes and motivations of the two groups of students. The study is based on Robert Gardner’s socioeducational model. A total of 119 students from the Spanish 10-15 classes were surveyed. 19 of them were Spanish majors and the rest are NonSpanish majors. The questionnaire used in the survey consists of six parts and was adapted from Gardner and Lambert’s Attitudes and Motivations Battery Test (AMBT). In the analysis of data, the researchers, with the help of a statistician, uses three types of procedure: Descriptive Statistics, t Test and ANÁLISIS DE ERRORES EN EL USO DE LAS PREPOSICIONES EN Y A POR LOS ESTUDIANTES DE DOS CLASES AVANZADAS EN LA UNIVERSIDAD DE FILIPINAS DILIMAN Eloisa Katrina V. Madamba Adviser: Prof. Anna Marie Sibayan This study focuses on the errors of the students from Spanish 30-31 and 40 in using the prepositions en and a. To facilitate the data gathering, the researcher collected written exercises from the respondents wherein all prepositios that were used, correctly and incorrectly, were counted. Evidently, the prepositions en and a produced the greatest number of errors among the prepositions used (results that were similar to results generated by earlier studies). Afte ranalyzing the situations where the error manifests, the researcher identified variables that influence the production of error. According to the results, the preposition en is erroneously used when paired with verbs that require the preposition a, which is caused primarily byc onfusion or misunderstanding of gramatical rules. On the other hand, the error with the preposition a, manifests when it is omitted before the direct object. Even if the wrong usage of a appears to be more of a mistake than an error, this is a result of the negative transfer of languages spoken by the learner. P Binomial Test. All of these are applied through the software “Excel Add-In PH Stat”. The results of the study lead to the description of the general state of the attitudes and motivations of the students. From these, the researchers conclude the similarities and differences among the attitudes and motivations of the Spanish majors and Non-Spanish majors towards learning the Spanish language. And most of all I believe that there is someone greater who should be glorified in this event. He is the one who backed me up all through the years. He made all this possible. God alone deserves all the glory! He has been working behind the scenes. When I remember my college life, I remember how ALL things are possible with God. W e are all capable of greatness! I heard it said, “Destiny is a matter of CHOICE not chance”. Muchas gracias! Maraming maraming salamat! P 14 PAROLES DOS VOCES DE LA POESÍA: Los poemas de Enrique Fernández Lumba Jad Monsod En su libro Kanthapura, el novelista indio Raja Rao expresa la importancia del lenguaje de la potencia colonial dominante para los colonizados utilizando las siguientes palabras fuertes: “One has to convey in a language that is not one’s own the spirit that is one’s own” (vii). (9). Como escribió Said en el mismo libro mencionado previamente, “There is a relationship between an individual writer and the tradition of which he or she is a part” (230). (Part one of two) Richard Karl Deang Studying French, English or any other language, modern or classical, for a degree, especially at the undergraduate level of American higher education, on which the Philippine system is historically based, students are constantly reminded that their attention should constantly be focused on one, two or even all of three areas of inquiry: language, literature and culture. The interdependence among these areas obviously varies according to one's specific object of study, but the distinction among them remains problematic due to the apparent difficulty in defining what seems to be a catchall term for anything that is not just words, whether written or spoken. Culture, as American university departments of English and modern languages have begun using the term fairly recently, offered, the term is used for two core courses of the undergraduate French major: 'Survey of French Culture and Civilization,' covering the period from the earliest period of human activity in what is now France until the French Revolution; and 'Survey of Contemporary French Culture and Civilization,' covering the period following the Revolution until the present. While other courses in the program are specifically concerned with grammar, composition, stylistics, phonetics and literature, among others, these "culture" courses have traditionally served as a way to set the historical background for advanced studies in language and literature. language, literature and culture ... the distinction among them remains problematic due to the apparent difficulty in defining what seems to be a catchall term for anything that is not just words, whether written or spoken includes ideas, problems and concerns which the first two areas are generally thought to exclude, such as cinema, history, philosophy, politics, etc. At the University of the Philippines Diliman, the only institution of higher education in the Philippines where undergraduate and graduate degrees in French (together with German, Italian and Spanish, with the exception of Italian at the graduate level) are currently The use of the words culture and civilization in the naming of these courses is an appropriation of the use of their direct translations, culture and civilisation, by the French, this use being no less problematic than that of Anglo-American academia. I was a third-year French major myself when I took the first of these two 'culture' courses, then given by a visiting professor from the University of Paris. The other French majors and I learned to recite from memory all the names of kings, wars and dynasties and all the important places and dates. We even tried our hand at reading Old French. 20 PAROLES If culture is to be associated with what is foreign to most people, especially in the context of studies in a foreign language and culture separate from the source, it is inevitable to look at how the word is used by those who represent France and French culture in the Philippine context. The Service de Coopération et d'Action Culturelles of the Embassy of France in the Philippines is responsible for several areas of cooperation, each of them led by an attaché. I enumerate them here in the order they are listed on their official website: culturel et artistique, universitaire, scientifique, linguistique and audiovisuelle. Being first on the list, one would assume that "culture" and "art," set apart from education, science, language and cinema, are the primary thrust of this section of the embassy. En parallèle, les galeries des Alliances françaises accueillent régulièrement des expositions d’artistes français ou philippins et des projections cinématographiques sont organisées chaque semaine.1 Whereas "culture" and "art" are used side by side, the distinction between them is blurred and is consequently lost, rendering them tautological. Contemporary dance, classical music, the visual arts, theater and literature are obviously forms of artistic expression in the canonical definition of the term and we can say that with the exception of cinema, for which the embassy has another attaché, all forms of 'Art' with a capital 'A' are covered. But what about culture? Are these the only sites of cultural activity in which it is possible to establish bilateral cooperation? By calling this particular department "culturel" and "artistique," the subtext communicated is that of 'culture' being inevitably and, possibly, even exclusively linked to 'art.' When a French person wants "un peu de culture", he goes to the cinema or the theater, reads a novel or visits a museum, then talks about the cultural experience over dinner with his other cultured friends. Of course, following this model, people would have different levels of culture, depending on socioeconomic, academic and even political factors. Similarly, the continued publication in France of general knowledge and trivia books with titles such as "La culture générale pour les nuls" (General Knowledge for Dummies) and "Testez vos connaissances en culture générale" (Test Your Knowledge in General Knowledge), each released annually in a new edition, JUNE 2012 21 supports the idea that not only is culture learned, it can also be measured, increased and improved. Of course, culture is only one of the two key terms used in the course titles in question, and seems almost handicapped without the other: civilization. In fact, for students learning French as a foreign language in France and elsewhere, the collective term for courses on what would be considered in the English-speaking world as 'French culture" is still cours de civilisation (civilization courses), which the Sorbonne itself still uses in the appellation of its highly subscribed French program for foreigners: Cours de Civilisation Française de la Sorbonne (French Civilization Courses of the Sorbonne). This word is also encountered when one refers to other cultures (la civilisation américaine, la civilisation japonaise, la civilisation philippine...). What exactly is 'culture' in French, and what is 'civilisation?' Or better yet, how is it possible that these French words can translate to the same words in English yet are not interchangeable at all? The semantic issues ramified from the layers of meaning covering these two terms lead us to several questions. What exactly is 'culture' in French, and what is 'civilisation?' Or better yet, how is it possible that these French words can translate to the same words in English yet are not interchangeable at all? I doubt, for example, that the French embassy would have an attaché de coopération pour la civilisation et l'art (attaché for civilization and art). On the other hand, I am certain that the Sorbonne would shun the use of "Cours de culture française" for its courses on French culture. How can these two words on one hand both signify the same thing and on the other, quite different ones? The English words culture and civilization are both historically loan words from the Middle French words culture and civilisation which are still used in modern French. But while the former comes from the Latin word cultura, a nominalization of the verb colere, meaning 'to cultivate' (cf. agriculture, horticulture, cell culture, etc.); the root word of the latter, civil comes from the noun civis, the Latin word for citizen, which is also the root word of civitas (city). Through these terms, we can see how the concept of culture is translated by the French. When the word culture is used, one refers to the individual and the processes by which humanity evolves, the manifestations of which are seen in their knowledge and representation of their world through art. It is not uncommon to hear French people say "Elle est très cultivée." In contrast, civilisation necessarily implies a sense of inclusivity/exclusivity (a city is defined by its membership), but it also brings to mind the use of the verb civiliser (to civilize) as the process by which a group or community can be improved and brought to a higher level of development, perhaps by themselves, or by another group, for them to be worthy of membership in another. Such words and definitions reflect how notions of culture in France are nuanced by the desire for individual and societal development and evolution, following a classical evolutionist model of anthropology, without necessarily (but possibly, although that in itself is a separate debate) considering race or ethnicity. Now that I myself teach French literature and culture at the same university, I have to admit that am still apprehensive when I am approached by undergraduate French majors who intend to work on "something on cultural studies" for their senior paper. On such occasions, I simply wince as I wish to ask them, "What exactly do you mean by cultural studies?" To these students, I answer instead through a reformulation and interrogation of what my professor had said when I was the student: Quelle culture ? What culture? P 22 PAROLES RESEÑA DEL MANUAL PRISMA ECO A1 Anna Marie Sibayan 1. Fig. 1 Actividad de “comprensión auditiva” (página 6) Transcripción 1 (Pista 1): Buenas noches. 1. Eh, hola. Me llamo Hector Antonio. Soy ecuatoriano. Estudio arquitectura y tengo veinticinco años. Llámame. 915437634. Adiós. 2. Buenas noches. Soy Isabel Santamaría. Soy española, de Guadalajara. Tengo 37 años y so abogada. Mi teléfono es 949256712. ¡Hasta luego! 3. ¡Hola! Soy Emilio. Soy empresario. Tengo 27 años. Soy argentino. Mi teléfono es el 629178609. Es un móvil. Adiós. 4. Hola. Soy Diana. Me gusta comer fuera mucho bailar. Fig. 3 Actividad de redacción (página 44) 26 PAROLES 3.
