man whose land produced a bountiful harvest. He asked himself,
„What shall I do, for I do not have space to store my harvest?‟ And
he said, „This is what I shall do: I shall tear down my barns and
build larger ones. There I shall store all my grain and other goods
and I shall say to myself, “Now as for you, you have so many good
things stored up for many years, rest, eat, drink, be merry!”‟ But
God said to him, „You fool, this night your life will be demanded
of you; and the things you have prepared, to whom will they
belong?‟ Thus will it be for all who store up treasure for
themselves but are not rich in what matters to God.”
Brief commentary on the Gospel
“One‟s life does not consist
of possessions.” These
words of Jesus of Nazareth
strike a discordant note in
our commercial and
materialistic-oriented
society. Today‟s gospel is a
challenge to all of us, no
matter how affluent or in
financial need we may be,
because it calls us to reflect
hard on what it is that we
value most, what it is that is
defining our lives, what it is
that possesses our hearts,
attention and energies. Materialism tends to narrow
our human potential, reducing it to what we have, so
that what we have takes priority over who we are and to
the sort of persons we are becoming. Materialism also
influences us to “treat things as if they were people
[by attending to them, loving them, caring for them, w
orrying ove them] and people as if they were things
[so that we use them or discard them when they no
longer serve us]” (Fr. John Kavanuagh, Following Christ
in a Consumer Society, Still). If we become materialistic
we begin to define ourselves by our wealth instead of
by the much more essential qualities of being human.
For Jesus it is very clear, we ought to concern
ourselves with being “rich in what matters to God,”
rather than with what consumerism and competition
„fools‟ us into thinking is essential. If we really
respond to the call of Jesus Christ we will find that
what we once thought was so important is really not
that important, and what we once disregarded with
indifference suddenly is revealed as what is truly
valuable. Or as it has been said quite succinctly, “The
most important things of life are not things.”

Let’s Pray for those in the Service/ Oremos Por Los que sirven a Nuestro Pais:
O, Lord God of hosts, O God of our salvation, O God who alone
workest wonders, do thou now look down with mercy and
compassion on thy humble servants and out of love for mankind
hearken and have mercy on us. Look with mercy, we pray thee, O
Lord, on those of our sons and daughters who now serve in our
Armed Forces, and who in obedience to their superiors have for
our sakes placed themselves in harm’s way. Grant that those who
request the protection of thy right hand may be overpowered by no
adverse force, and may the invited defense of thy mighty power
shield thy faithful sons and daughters. Watch over them, O Lord,
and bring them back safely to those who love them. Grant courage
and steadfast faith to them and to those who long for their return.
Bring a quick and bloodless end to these conflicts and spare the
lives of the innocent. Grant no increase to the numbers of widows
and orphans and relieve the privations of the bereaved and wounded, whether wounded in body or in soul.
Restore peace in our day, O Lord, that thy truth may go forth unhindered, for Thou, O Lord, art the Prince of Peace
and art ever-glorified with thine unoriginate Father and the all-holy, good, and life-giving Spirit, now and ever, and
unto ages of ages. Amen.

This fall, over 250 children and young people will sign up to learn more about Jesus and the Catholic Faith.
You can help by becoming a catechist for Faith Formation. As you nurture the faith of our young, you will
learn and grow as well.
With classes offered Saturdays mornings, Mondays and Tuesdays evenings you are sure to find a time that
fits your schedule.
You will be provided with training, materials, and support. Classes begin on September 21.

All children returning for the second year of preparation to receive sacraments must turn in the
re-registration form as soon as possible.
For those who received Sacraments and do not have the Certificate
please come to the Office of Religious Education.
The registration for the new year of Religious Education start on
August 1st and must be completed by August 20.

En aquel tiempo, dijo uno del público a Jesús:
“Maestro, di a mi hermano que reparta la
herencia conmigo.” El le respondió: “¡Hombre!
¿Quién me ha constituido juez o repartidor
entre vosotros?” Y les dijo: “Mirad y guardaos
de toda codicia, porque, aun en la abundancia, la
vida de uno no está asegurada por sus bienes.”
Les dijo una parábola: "Los campos de cierto
hombre rico dieron mucho fruto; y pensaba
entre sí, diciendo: ¿Qué haré, pues no tengo donde reunir mi
cosecha? Y dijo: Voy a hacer esto: Voy a demoler mis graneros, y
edificaré otros más grandes y reuniré allí todo mi trigo y mis
bienes, y diré a mi alma: Alma, tienes muchos bienes en reserva
para muchos años. Descansa, come, bebe, banquetea.” Pero Dios
le dijo: “¡Necio! esta misma noche te reclamarán el alma; las cosas
que preparaste, ¿para quién serán?” Así es el que atesora riquezas
para sí, y no se enriquece en orden a Dios.
La lectura de hoy nos presenta tres ideas importantes:
• El significado y propósito de nuestras vidas no están en el
tener sino en el ser. Si nos basamos y confiamos en nuestras
posesiones, en adquirir, en tener (dinero, estatus, prestigio, poder,
riqueza, fama, etc.), perderemos el propósito de nuestras vidas y
nos daremos cuenta que hemos sido engañados.
• “Mirad y guardaos de toda codicia.” Necesitamos
introspección, mas exanimación de nuestros motivos y vidas.
Necesitamos más honestidad para guardarnos contra la codicia y de
los motivos que orienta nuestras vidas hacia falsos valores.
• Consciencia de la incertidumbre y brevedad de nuestras

Reflexión Dominical
“Mirad y guardaos de toda codicia.” Estas palabras de Jesús de Nazaret suenan
una nota discordante en nuestra sociedad con tantas tendencias comerciales y
materialistas. El evangelio de hoy nos reta, no importa nuestro estado económico,
porque nos llama a reflexionar asiduamente sobre lo que más vale, sobre lo que
define nuestras vidas, lo que posee nuestros corazones, atención y energías. El
materialismo tiende a limitar nuestro potencial humano, reduciéndonos a lo
tenemos, hasta al punto en que lo que tenemos toma prioridad sobre lo que somos y
sobre la clase de persona en que nos estamos convirtiendo. El materialismo
también nos influye a “tratar las cosas como si fuesen personas [atendiéndo las,
amándolas, cuidándolas, preocupándonos por ellas] y a las personas como si
fuesen cosas [usándolas, y descartándola s cuando no nos son útiles]” (Padre John
Kavanaugh, Following Christ in a Consumer Society, Still; Siguiendo a Cristo en una Sociedad
de Consumo). Si nos convertimos en materialistas nos empezamos a definir por
nuestra fortuna y riqueza en vez de por las cualidades más esenciales del ser/siendo
humano. Para Jesús todo es muy claro, debemos de preocuparnos con siendo
“ricos en lo que le importa a Dios,” en vez de con lo que el consumerismo y
competencia qu e nos propone como esencial. Si de verdad respondemos al
llamado de Jesucristo encontraremos que lo que antes considerábamos como primordial en verdad no es tan importante, y
lo antes descartábamos con indiferencia de pronto se nos revela como lo que verdaderamente es valioso. O como se ha
expresado con brevedad, “Las cosas más importantes de la vida no son cosas.”
