Mayor Taylor commences summer reading club By Christina Acosta [email protected] The school bell may stop ringing; however, summer is a great time for children to learn and maintain their reading levels. Thanks to Mayor Ivy Taylor, a summer reading club will encourage children and teens to read for fun during the hot sea son. This week, Mayor Taylor and San Antonio Public Library launched the Mayor’s Summer Reading Club for children and teens and the Summer Reading Program for adults. “During the school year, you have to read what is assigned to you by your teachers, but during the summertime, you get to read what you want. I think everyone will love reading once they tap into the pages, it’s interesting to you,” Mayor Taylor told students gathered at the Central Library. “The goal is to be able to find books that can take you to places, especially places that maybe you can’t afford to go to this summer and to explore ideas you never thought of.” Adults are also encouraged to participate in the program by checking out a copy of a recom mended title or join discussions and book clubs held by the 28 library locations. The best part of the club and the program is that those who participate have the chance to win a prize. The Mayor’s Sum mer Reading Book Club and Summer Reading Program have numerous partners and spon sors including Whataburger, VIA, SAISD and Amazon, which donated 25 Fire tablets and $500 in gift cards to the effort. Children must finish at least eight books or listen to at least 16 books to claim a summer reading certificate signed by the Mayor herself and a free paperback book. Teens who participate receive an entry into exciting drawings for every book they read or program they attend. Adults who read or listen to four books will be entered into a drawing as well. The Mayor’s Reading Book Club and Sum mer Reading Program have been well received by the audi ence over the year that Mayor Taylor would like to continue expanding the education of children. “There is always room to im prove and expand so we want to get more folks engaged in reading,” Mayor Taylor told La Prensa. “I hope that participants will have a passion for reading to help them continue to read, not just for our school kids, but also for our adults. In today’s complex society, I think every one has to be a lifelong learner, so it’s important to keep read ing no matter what stage of life you are in.” San Antonio Public Library will celebrate all of the sum mer’s super readers with a SummerFest celebration at the Central Library on July 30. Patrons can register on line (www.mysapl.org/srp) or at any neighborhood library branch. Members of the read ing club receive a reading log to track the titles of the books they read and have until July 31 to complete the challenge. This week, Mayor Ivy Taylor launched her summer reading club and program to encourage children, teens and adults to read for fun during the summer. For many of our friends and neighbors here in San Antonio, honoring the memory of our fallen heroes is personal. We are the land of the free because they were so brave. What keeps Old Glory flying so high is not a strong breeze, but their strong resolve. “Who kept the faith and fought the fight; the glory theirs, the duty ours,” wrote poet Wal lace Bruce. Our duty is to ensure those who served receive the benefits they earned. V.O.I.C.E.S. of our Veterans--At San Antonio College, I recently participated in a town hall forum and workshop for our local veterans hosted by Councilmember Shirley Gon zales, State Senator José Mené ndez, State Representative Ina SATX Minjarez and Steven Price, who chairs the V.O.I.C.E.S. of our Veterans group. Here in Military City, we un derstand that those who gave up so much to protect us deserve every available resource. We gained further insight into chal lenges of homelessness, mental health, the determination to seek greater economic opportunities and to provide the type of lead ership in the community that was learned through military service. Improving veteran access Inner City Development Friendship Festival and street dance La festival de amistad y baile en la calle Free Admission July 9, 2016 Performances by: Grupo Cielo Pinata Protest Liberty Band, DJ Gabriel and Danzavida De San Antonio 6 to 11:30 p.m. 1300 Chihuahua Music | Food | Beverages Games | Raffle | Street Dance Sponsored by: Sponsorship also provided by City of San Antonio District to healthcare-- On the battle field, the pledge is to leave no service member behind. On their return home, we must keep our pledge to leave no vet behind. In the final paragraph of President Lincoln’s second inaugural address, he committed our nation “to care for him who shall have borne the battle and for his widow, and his orphan.” Today, a pair of metal plaques bearing those words flank the entrance to the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA). While there remain some problems at the VA that demand our contin ued efforts, we should be aware that the vast majority of VA employees, many of them vets themselves, work hard and care deeply about serving veterans. At the first indication of sched uling manipulation within the VA, I talked with whistleblowers and met personally with staff at Audie Murphy. Since their call to action in 2014, the VA has hired an additional 14,000 healthcare workers, opened 3.9 million square feet of new clini cal space and added 20 million provider hours of care, as well as cut the disability compensa tion and claims backlog by 87 percent since 2014. These improvements are beginning to make a difference in wait times for our veterans. Though progress has been made, too many of our vets are still waiting far too long to receive the care they have earned. I welcome the continu ing advice from vets on this and other issues and want to hear from constituents who have experienced problems. While we rightfully demand more accountability from the VA, I will strongly oppose those who would use the recent prob lems to dismantle and privatize the VA and its unique service to our vets. The VA was specially designed to care for veterans and their families, featuring cutting edge rehabilitation technology, custom-tailored treatment plans and expertise with combatspecific ailments. Replacing that with a system designed to make a profit off of those who de serve the most comprehensive, thoughtful care is unacceptable. Every week I serve in Wash ington, I pass the imposing World War II Memorial, where an inscription by President Tru man reads, “Our debt to the heroic men and valiant women in the service of our country can never be repaid. They have earned our undying gratitude. America will never forget their sacrifices.” Memorial Day may be over, but our gratitude is unending. 5 de junio de 2016 3-A Wound Care Awareness Week Special to La Prensa Healogics, Inc., the nation’s leading provider of wound care services, is sponsoring the third annual Wound Care Awareness Week from June 6 to June 10. Healogics, along with its affiliated companies, manages nearly 800 Wound Care Centers in the United States, Puerto Rico and the United Kingdom. Chronic wounds affect ap proximately 6.7 million people in the U.S., and the incidence is expected to rise at a rate of two percent annually over the next decade. An aging population and increasing rates of diseases and conditions such as diabetes, obesity and the late effects of radiation therapy contribute to the chronic wound epidemic. Untreated, chronic wounds can lead to diminished quality of life and possibly amputation of the affected limb. No soy ingenuo. Just a Thought: the “bolillo” In 1978, the year be fore I taught at Memorial High School in Edgewood and wrote for Steve Walker the Westside & Southside Suns for a brief stint, I taught at Pearce Elementary School in Southside ISD. I was a migrant reading teacher, pull ing students out from their regular classes during the day and working with them in the library. One day after finishing lunch duty in the cafeteria, I was walking down the hallway back to my designated teaching area when one of my second grade migrant reading students passed me on her way to her regular class. She paused for a moment and said, “Hello Mr. Walker,” in her sweet voice. Then, she took me by surprise by asking me, “Mr. Walker are you a bolillo?” Not knowing how to re spond, since I wasn’t familiar with the term at the time, I answered, “Graciela, I am not sure. But, I will get back with you later on, ok?” She smiled, nodded and walked on to her class. Immediately, I marched into the teacher’s lounge down the hall looking for a fellow teacher, preferably a Hispanic teacher, who could tell me the definition of a “bolillo!” I had no idea if it was good or bad. All I knew was that Graciela believed me to be one. Mrs. Guzman, one of the first grade teachers, was in the faculty lounge, and I told her one of my students asked me the question if I was a “bolillo.” Her answer was short and to the point. “In English it means a piece of white bread.” “Really?” I answered with a puzzled look on my face. “You mean she is calling me a piece of white bread?” Mrs. Guzman laughed and replied, “It is another word for ‘gringo.’” She then asked me, “How did she say it?” I an swered, “What do you mean?” She explained, “Did she ca sually just ask the question are you a ‘bolillo’ with a smile or are you a ‘bolillo’ with a little snarl on her face as if accusing you?” I answered that it sounded like an innocent question to me. Mrs. Guzman then informed me that Graciela was using it as a term of endearment not an insult. Boy was I relieved. The more I thought of it, the happier I got. Graciela said I was a “bolillo.” Therefore it was so. For the rest of the year and for many years later when I taught in the predominately Hispanic community, I referred to myself as the “bolillo.” I was also referred to by other His panic words, but I am not at liberty to share those particular ones with the readers! I am just kidding. Later in my teaching career at La Memorial in Edgewood, La Techla, in SAISD and in 12 years in Harlandale ISD, I was able to learn so much more about the Hispanic com munity. I learned to appreciate the rich culture and write about those in the Hispanic commu nity, who do so much for the community as a whole, not just for one segment of it. We are all in this together. Anyway, as always, what I write is “Just a Thought.” Steve Walker is a Vietnam Veteran, former Journalist and Justice of the Peace. Calendario de la comunidad PEDRO FRIEDEBERG: PRAISE OF FOLLY — RuizHealy Art is pleased to present “Pedro Friedeberg: Praise of Folly.” The exhibition will feature an eclectic mix of Pedro Friedeberg’s art across a fairly broad range of media includ ing: hand woven carpets, paintings, his iconic hand-chairs, fantastical sculptures and prints. A catalogue will be avail able with an essay by Dan Cameron. One of the master illusionists of late 20th century art, Pedro Friedeberg is enjoying something of a resurgent moment in the second decade of the 21st century. Ever since the 2009 retrospec tive of his work at the Palacio de Bellas Artes in Mexico City coincided one year later with the definitive critical study on him, authored by James Oles, there has been a noticeable uptick in international critical, collector and museum attention toward his unique oeuvre. Showcasing “Secondary Stories” as well as three video installation works, the exhibition opens at SPACE, the public gallery of the Linda Pace Foundation. The bakery has received local and even national recognition for its colorful macarons and exquisite French pastries, breakfast and lunch – all created by owners Anne Ng and Charlie Biednham. After perfecting their craft in California, which included stints in top pastry kitchens around the San Francisco Bay Area, they settled in San Antonio in 2010 and established Bakery Lorraine at the Pearl in 2011. At their second location, the couple decided to create a refined menu with the help of Head Chef Chris Cheatwood, who uses the finest ingredients at the Medical Center. The Chef explains that the menu will bring flavor to the Medical Center that was long due for doctors and the community. “Coming up with the menu happened quickly. The staff got together a couple of times, talked about what we liked for breakfast, for lunch, and that worked,” Chef Cheatwood told La Recently, Bakery Lorraine opened a second location at the Medical Center to bring the community of doctors, patients and residents the opportunity to try San Antonio’s precious gem. (Photo, Christina Acosta) Prensa. “We started to implement fine ingredients, which can give the meal more flavor and texture. I like the idea of operating at a lunch setting because it is so confining, and people spend good money to invest time into a good meal.” From the best flours and seasonal fruits to farm-raised eggs and dairy, Bakery Lorraine is stirring the way cookies and croissants are apparent in San Antonio. La Prensa recently stopped by the new location to try the fresh ingredients provided by the menu to understand Cheatwood’s flavor capabili- ties. As the first item came out, I was disappointed to see that the Cuban Sandwich was small and thin from what they normally look like. Once I took a bite, however, my frown turned upside down when I tasted the roasted pork loin, ham, fontina, lettuce and pickles grilled with a little juice and crisp. It may have been the smallest and thinnest Cuban sandwich ever seen; however, it packed enough flavor and ingredients to fill you up. The Ham and Cheese Sandwich had a kick of spicy and sweet ingredients of smoked ham, brie, fermented honey and house mustard. This sandwich was not your basic sandwich your mother would make you take to school every day – be prepared for the adult sandwich. Finally, the desserts showed up. I was able to try the Chocolate Macaron, Margarita Macaron, Cream Puffs and even a Blueberry Tart. None of the pastries and deserts outweighed one another as all tasted moist, creamy and sweet enough to make you thirsty. The Bakery Lorraine experience was a memorable one that many should visit as it came with surprises and flavors that Cheatwood accurately described. Ultimately, Bakery Lorraine is the place to be when you are in need to leave the lunchbox or cooking behind for a day, and discover what the culinary scene in San Antonio is offering. “There is an influx in the culinary industry…we needed to build more experiences culturally with people who are looking at the comforts of home or other places,” concluded Chef Cheatwood. If you are interested in having a flavorful experience at one of the most recognized pastry shops, visit Monday through Sunday, 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. For more information on Bakery Lorraine, please visit www.bakerylorraine.com. ` 5 de junio de 2016 Romina Marroquin taps into her voice as Judy Hopps in ‘Zootopia’ By Christina Acosta [email protected] Many believe that a voice actor has an easy job to only speak if needed— For Spanish voice actress Romina Marroquin, using creativity and emotion in her voice is vital. In her new film “Zootopia,” which comes out on DVD on June 12, Marroquin recalls this role as an opportunity to express who she truly is as a person through her role. Marroquin, 34, was born and raised in Mexico City and earned a bachelor’s degree in communications at UI (Universidad Intercontinental). She has since crossed over as a voice actress and Mexican singer with extensive preparation. Her extensive resume includes voicing several animated princess characters such as Princess Candence in “My Little Pony,” Rosetta from “Tinkerbell” and Princess Apple White in “Ever After High.” However, the part of Judy Hopps was different for Marroquin because she felt as if she was preparing for the role of herself. “I feel like I can relate to Judy Hopps because she is expressive, has a lot of energy, she works hard and accomplishes her goals, which has happened to me in my career. I can relate to her because I have always wanted to be an actress; and now, I am more than that,” Marroquin told La Prensa. “While working on the movie, I also noticed that we are both on a mission, and we do it like there is no other option. We are also respectful of people and of the law.” The film tells the story of the modern mammal metropolis of “Zootopia,” a city that resembles New York City. Comprised of habitat neighborhoods like ritzy Sahara Square and frigid Tundratown, it is a melting pot where animals from every environment live together. No matter what size you are – big as an elephant or small as a bird – you can be anything in this city. When optimistic Officer Judy Hopps (Marroquin) arrives, she discovers that being the first bunny on a police force of big, tough animals isn’t so easy. Determined to prove herself, she jumps at the opportunity to crack a case, even if it means partnering with a fast-talking, scam-artist fox, Nick Wilde, to solve a big mystery. Through their adventures, we learn more about the lovable characters, who are also introduced to diverse groups of friends. When the movie came out in March, the movie became such a hit that Marroquin was left flabbergasted at how her hard work as a voice actress paid off with one of the most anticipated movies of the year. “I knew that her character Romina Marroquin plays the Spanish voice of Judy Hopps, a fearless rabbit in “Zootopia,” who takes many on an adventure to follow their dreams. “Zootopia” comes out on DVD June 12. (Courtesy photo) was going to play a big role in children’s lives, however, I did not know that the movie was going to be a big hit as it was. I think that her character can relate to many people, and it was something I couldn’t wait for everybody to see,” said Marroquin. With the success of “Zootopia,” Marroquin hopes her career will steer towards more strong female leads through Disney, including reviving the role of Anna in “Frozen 2.” She also hopes that many learn from Judy Hopps that anything is possible if you just believe. “Fight for your dreams. You can do anything you want to,” concluded Marroquin. Enrique Guerra’s “El Caporal” pays homage to South Texas’ ranching heritage Special to La Prensa When the Briscoe Western Art Museum commissioned artist Enrique “Kiko” Guerra to sculpt a life-sized representation of an authentic Texas vaquero from the early 1800’s, he was immediately enthusiastic. “I knew I wanted to take this once in a life time opportunity to bring history to life. I wanted to show a vaquero (cowboy or cattleman) in action, doing his job to round up wild cattle.” After over two years of research, sketching, sculpting, trial and error, Guerra’s commission is now completed and has been installed in its permanent location in the McNutt Sculpture Garden at the Briscoe Museum in downtown San Antonio. The impressive, life-size bronze entitled “El Caporal” (Ranch Foreman) depicts a 19th century vaquero driving a pair of recently captured and branded wild cows. The longhorn criollo cows are tied in tandem at the neck, but also have their tails braided together, to prevent their escape to the open plains and to keep the cows moving forward towards their destination. “I think Kiko Guerra is a remarkable artist,” said Tom Livesay, the executive director of the Briscoe Museum. “He has an eye not just for detail, but for the larger picture. This particular sculpture …. showcases his talent as an artist and also an historian. After all, without the vaquero, there would be no cowboy. It is a marvelous addition to our collection.” The Briscoe recently unveiled its newest outdoor sculpture by Enrique Guerra, “El Caporal.” The sculpture is a representation of an authentic 19th century Texas vaquero herding Longhorns. (Courtesy photo) The work was unveiled at a special presentation on Tuesday, May 24. Donors, Museum members and members of the Guerra family were on hand to mark the occasion. Guerra is a native South Texas artist who grew up on a working cattle ranch in Northern Mexico. He has spent a lifetime studying the rich history and culture of the borderlands, in particular, Spanish Colonial history. Guerra’s father, also named Enrique Guerra, was a renowned Northern Mexico/ South Texas historian, and both father and son conferred regarding the historical details they deemed essential for an accurate representation. Spanish colonists explored Northern Mexico and South Texas in search of the legend- ary wealth of the New World. Colonists quickly realized that the wide-open plains of South Texas were perfect for raising cattle. Before the days of fences, a fair amount of the livestock brought in by the colonists and Catholic missions escaped from their owners. Vaqueros were hired to round up these wild cattle. Once caught, the cattle would be inspected to see if they had been branded or earmarked, to determine from where they had escaped. If the cattle were completely unmarked, local government officials would be called in to assign ownership. The historical details of the sculpture are especially impressive. Guerra researched the types of ropes and toggled knots used by early vaqueros by interviewing ranchers and historians from remote parts of Mexico and South Texas. Also, the vaquero’s traditional riding garb and saddle are distinctive in that they evolved from earlier Spanish modes of dress. Former soldiers who later became vaqueros adapted their jackets, pants, hats and riding accouterments from outfits that protected them in battle, to outfits that protected them from the harsh elements, the thorny South Texas brush land and the rigors of open-range cattle work. Guerra reached his goal of depicting a traditional early Texas vaquero in action, driving cattle towards a destination. Interestingly enough, Guerra’s life sized “El Caporal” is installed within feet of the San Antonio River, where real vaqueros are believed to have driven their cattle only a few centuries ago. 8 La Prensa de San Antonio 5 de junio de 2016 Pianists from around the globe vie for the gold medal in S.A. All submitted a video online of a required performance. “They had to play repertoire from specific style periods, which was reviewed by judges,” she said. SAIPC commissioned Texas composer Matthew Mason to produce a new work, which all 12 semi-finalists are required to learn. The world premiere of his work will then be performed by the five finalists. In addition to awards for first, second and third place, there are awards for best performance of the Commissioned Work, and of works from the Baroque, Classical, Romantic and 20th-21st century eras, as well as of a Russian work and a work by a Spanish, Latin American or Impressionistic Composer.
