“The First Reading in today’s Holy Scripture is
from the Old Testament Book of Sirach. At times this Bible book has
also been called the Wisdom of Sirach. Similar to Proverbs, Sirach is a
series of teachings recorded between 200 and 175 BC.
The first verse of this reading captures one of the key elements of
stewardship. It says, “My child, conduct your affairs with humility,
and you will be loved more than a giver of gifts.” The word “humility”
literally means “of the earth” or in a phrase which might mean more to
us “down to earth.” The good steward realizes that he or she receives
everything from a loving and generous God. That can be a humbling
recognition.
“True humility is not thinking less of yourself;
it is thinking of yourself less,” is how the eminent author
and theologian C.S. Lewis put it. We are important in the eyes of God.
Jesus emptied Himself in our behalf. He was humility incarnate.
Washing the feet of His Apostles, He comes to us at every Mass in
common bread and wine.
If we practice and pursue stewardship as a way of life, we choose to
let others be more important; we are not controlling; we support
others in silent ways. Are you willing to let God take charge of your
life? Being a steward means that. That is the message from Sirach, and
it is a message given us by Jesus over and over.

Open to ALL!
This course is open to all who want to understand
the intersection of faith, culture and behavior in your
daily life. Learn what “Enculturation” means and
how it applies to you in order to promote Pope
Francis’ call for a “culture of encounter”. Look at
prejudices in our society and understand the
sociocultural perspective, discussing values,
attitudes, and marginalization in society. Come and
learn how to serve all peoples and be witnesses of
God’s inclusive love.
This is a non-credit course.
CCF #501: Church History goes beyond a series of facts
that happened at a certain time in human history. It is our own
history. Church History illustrates how a community, guided by
the Holy Spirit, has throughout the centuries. These events
and actions are filled with joy and sorrow that remember an
essential truth for us: We are the Mystical Body of Christ in
human history, in the struggle to remain faithful to the Gospel,
and to see ourselves as the mustard seed that
should grow and bear fruit.

SILENT AUCTION NEEDS YOU!
THANK YOU to all parishioners and businesses that have sent in Silent Auction donations so far. We
are getting very close to Carnival and we still could use more items to make this year’s Auction the
best ever!
The Silent Auction raises money by auctioning off your tax-deductible donations to the highest
bidder during Carnival. We would be grateful to count on your new or continued support of this
fundraising effort.
Please contact Kristen Whisler (mobile: 214.529.2397 email: [email protected]) or Pauline Stein
(mobile: 469.569.2161 email: [email protected] ) if you have any questions or to arrange for pick
up/delivery of your contribution. The deadline to turn in donations is September 7th. Thank you in
advance for your consideration, and we look forward to you being a part of our best Carnival ever!
