Inspired by the Holy Spirit and through worship and prayer, we use our time, talent and treasure, to nourish the soul, care for the needy, minister to the alienated, nurture the children and WELCOME all people into our community of faith. From Msgr. Figliozzi Scriptural Reflection for the Week “To each individual the manifestation of the Spirit is given for some benefit.” (see Romans 12:36-7,12-13) The fruits of the Holy Spirit are: CHARITY, JOY PEACE, PATIENCE, KINDNESS, GOODNESS, GENEROSITY, GENTLENESS, FAITHFULNESS, MODESTY, SELF-CONTROL, CHASTITY. The gifts of the Holy Spirit are: WISDOM, UNDERSTANDING, COUNSEL, KNOWLEDGE, FORTITUDE, PIETY and FEAR of the LORD. Which of the fruits and gifts have been given to you by God? Have you acknowledged them as gifts of God to you personally ? Have you used God’s gifts to you to bring others to know, love and serve God? Which of the gifts have you allowed to lie dormant and unused? On this PENTECOST day, the birthday of the Church, take a personal inventory of the ways God has blessed you. Then realize with these blessings God is giving you a responsibility to bless others! Imagine if we all decided to truly live this way; with this mindset! How we would fulfill the words of the prayer. “Come, Holy Spirit, renew the face of the earth!” Pentecost Sunday Baptisms and First Communions This Sunday at the 11am Mass, the following children will be Baptized: Victoria Achodo Robert Martone Jayson Castellanos Brianna Roberts Robert Ebert III Damani Rose Giovanny Joseph In addition to those listed above, the following children will be receiving their First Holy Communion: Alexandra Cordova Antonio Domeniguez Frank Gimmi III Andrew Jorge Krissy Jorge Matthew Serrano Pentecost Sunday Adult Confirmation This Sunday, at the 1pm Mass, the following adults will be Confirmed: Kristen Callan Jacqueline Lopez Angel Centeno Lino Minetto Joseph Centeno James Mooney Catherine Doran Vanessa Morales Salvatore Giusto Alvia Richards Camp Sienna Day! We must be like Him.” — Blessed Teresa of Calcutta Stewardship….. Reflection One miracle of Pentecost was that, despite their diversity, each listener heard God’s word in their own language. The meaning of Stewardship is that, by sharing the gifts poured out on us by the Holy Spirit, we will be empowered to meet the needs of our brothers and sisters, whatever they may be. Living Stewardship We are grateful this week for all stewards in our parish who practice works of mercy by taking care of, forgiving and helping each other. SACRIFICING FOR ONE ANOTHER We demonstrate being good stewards of our Parish by sharing our blessings through our weekly offertory gift. And suddenly a sound came from heaven like the rush of a mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting. And there appeared to them tongues as of fire, distributed and resting on each one of them. And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance… …And Peter said to them, “Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins; and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. For the promise is to you and to your children and to all that are far off, every one whom the Lord our God calls to him.” And he testified with many other words and exhorted them, saying, "Save yourselves from this crooked generation.” So those who received his word were baptized, and there were added that day about three thousand souls. And they devoted themselves to the apostles' teaching and fellowship, to the breaking of bread and the prayers.” - Acts 2:1-4, 38-42 After his resurrection, Jesus appeared to his disciples and instructed them for 40 days, after which he ascended to heaven. While with them, he said: “Do not leave Jerusalem, but wait for the gift my Father promised, which you have heard me speak about. For John baptized with water, but in a few days you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit” (Acts 1:4-5). That baptism of the Spirit would be called the birthday of the church. Jesus’ words were fulfilled on the day of Pentecost. The disciples were filled with the Holy Spirit (Acts 2:4), and the apostle Peter preached his first sermon, urging the crowds to repent, to believe in Jesus Christ as their Messiah and to receive the gift of the Holy Spirit (v 38). That very day, some 3,000 people were baptized as the people of God (v 41). The church had begun. The day called Pentecost is named after the Greek word pentekostos, which means 50th. It is the festival observed by Jews, sometimes called in the Old Testament the Feast of Weeks (Exodus 34:22; Leviticus 23:15; Numbers 28:26; Deuteronomy 16:9-12). Pentecost was to be observed in ancient Israel on the 50th day after the priest waved a selected sheaf of the first grain that had been harvested in the spring (Leviticus 23:15-21). Seven weeks elapsed between the day of the wave sheaf offering and the beginning of Pentecost, thus the name of the festival — the Feast of Weeks. Pentecost Sunday marks the decent of the Holy Spirit upon the disciples after his resurrection. Before Pentecost, the disciples were unsure of what they were to do next, and spent most of their time in hiding. After Pentecost, and the gift of the Holy Spirit, they understood their mission to spread the Good News of Jesus, and they had the courage to come out of hiding and speak openly about who Jesus was, and what he had accomplished by his dying and rising. Because Pentecost brought the disciples this clarity of mission, it is regarded as the founding or birth of the Church. Before Pentecost, the disciples of Jesus are afraid and disorganized. After Pentecost, they are a people with a mission, who perceive themselves as spiritually and sacramentally connected to the risen Christ. We read about this entire account of the early Church’s first days in the Acts of the Apostles. Pentecost still center on the gifts of the Holy Spirit, and the power of those gifts to both draw people together, and to send them forth to spread the word. The gifts of the Holy Spirit are: Wisdom, Knowledge, Understanding, Fortitude, Good Counsel, Piety, and Fear of the Lord. Of course, one of the remarkable gift of the story of the first Pentecost was the miracle of understanding, in which everyone in the diverse crowd in Jerusalem hears the disciples speaking in the listeners’ own language. Pentecost is a celebration of a new beginning, a celebration of God’s New Creation. It invites us to ponder about our own personal relationship with the Holy Spirit. Do I make time to share with the Lord, time for prayer, being in God’s presence? Do I open my heart and mind to God's gift of the Holy Spirit and proclaim Jesus to others ? Mendonca ¿Cómo vamos a compartir y proclamar a Jesús resucitado? DROSMAN’S 6th GR. CLASS TRIP WASHINGTON STREET SCHOOL Last Thursday things were a little quiet here at Outreach until the door bell rang and in came Mrs. Annemarie Drosman’s whole sixth grade class from Washington Street School. They came on a school bus fresh from their shopping spree at a local supermarket with food donations for our pantry. During the school year, since September, the students have been collecting recyclable items and then redeeming them; that money was combined to be used for this outing. Mrs. Drosman gave each group of students a copy of our grocery list that we use here at the pantry and broke it down into sections of what items each group should purchase with their allotted monies. The students then went shopping purchasing the items to stock our shelves. Once everything was purchased the students loaded onto the bus again and came directly to our office. Even though Mrs. Drosman came with her class last year, we were definitely not expecting them this year, so their visit was a great surprise and we were very grateful for all their donations—about 40 bags or more. The students were then given a chance to see the back of the office where the pantry shelves are stocked with the food items we receive for the needy when they come asking for help. As the students waved good-bye and loaded back onto their bus for the last time ,our PSM volunteers got to work putting all the groceries on our pantry shelves. We are grateful for the donations of food we received but more so for Mrs. Drosman’s commitment to sharing the importance of giving to those in need, and caring for our earth through recycling. This was truly the Corporal Works of Mercy in action! Thank You Mrs. Drosman and your students for a job well done! Hope to see you & your new class again next year! EVENING OF RESPITE FOR THOSE WITH SPECIAL NEEDS FRIDAY, MAY 20th 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm If you or someone you know would benefit from this program and need more information or if you would like to volunteer please contact the Outreach Office - 775-0840 or [email protected] Thank You Christian Mothers Meeting Date Change Please note our next meeting will be on Tuesday, May 24th in the Cafeteria at 7:30pm. Board members meet at 7:00pm. We welcome all Moms, Step-moms, Grandmothers, Godmothers and Aunts. We would like to meet you!! Attitudes Of Mercy During this Year of Mercy John 20: 19 - 23 Today is Pentecost Sunday - We celebrate the Birthday of the Church - Our Attitude of Mercy would grow if we would follow but one of these quotes from Pope Francis on the Holy Spirit: “If people listen to the Holy Spirit, they would hear him say, ‘God loves you’.” “We have to listen to the Holy Spirit who is inside us! What does he tell us? That God is good, that God is a father, that he loves us and always forgives us.” “The Holy Spirit is God active in us and awakens our memory of how Christ redeemed us of our misery and sin.” “We cannot be ‘backseat Christians’ or ‘couch -potato Christians’, cozy in our comfort zones, the Lord always wants us to move forward, forward, forward, and not take refuge in a comfortable, quiet life.” “It is the Holy Spirit, the gift of the Risen Christ, who helps us recognize the Truth. He is by our side to support us in this journey of knowledge.” “The Holy Spirit is the strength of God, it’s what gives us the strength to go forward but many find this upsetting and prefer the comfort of the familiar.” “Let us ask ourselves today: Are we open to ‘God’s surprises’? Or are we closed and fearful before the newness of the Holy Spirit.” “Don’t be afraid of the newness that the Holy Spirit works in us!” Confirmation Novena 8 Please join us in praying for our Confirmation Candidates who will be receiving the Sacrament of Confirmation Prayer to the Holy Spirit O Holy Spirit, soul of my soul, I adore you. Enlighten, guide, strengthen and console me. Tell me what I ought to do and command me to do it. I promise to be submissive in everything you ask of me and to accept all that you permit to happen to me, only show me what is Your holy will. Let us pray that all Confirmation Candidates will have a deep reverence for God, our Father and grow in their trust and love of Him through the gift of Piety. Come Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of your faithful and kindle in them the fire of your love. Send forth your Spirit and they shall be created and you will renew the face of the earth. Strengthen and protect by your kindness the faith of all who believe in you. We ask this through our Lord Jesus Christ, your son, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, forever and ever. Amen! (Spend some extra time in prayer.
