Yo también voté. Me fui al Internet animada – o empujada - por mi muy patriota peruana amiga Ana y, tras echarle un vistazo a las
candidatas a maravilla, voté. La Alambra por ser española, las pirámides de Egipto porque además las conozco, y por supuesto el
Machu Picchu, porque entre otras cosas y sabiendo como es, no hubiera tenido valor de mirar a mi amiga a la cara y decirle que la
maravilla peruana no se encontraban entre mis favoritas.
Total, que llega este tal aventurero suizo Bernard Weber y como quien no quiere la cosa monta un circo mediático de agarrarse la
peluca, provocando la mayor votación de la historia de Internet, y luego, con un pellizquito de cultura y un buen chorro de oro de divisa
turística, logra maravillar al mundo entero. El resto es historia, y todo esto, según versión oficial, para defender el patrimonio universal e
interesar a las masas por la cultura, ¡y hay que reconocer que lo consiguieron!
No entremos en si ha sido un gran negocio, ni en si tiene o no sentido. Yo me admiro de los que tienen ese talento especial para crear
una visión, creérsela y encima vendérsela a los demás. Es más, los envidio. Por otro lado, no me considero una aguafiestas, pero hay
algo en la forma en que últimamente todo se mide por el rasero del marketing que deja un cierto olor a chamuscado, y mientras que no
critico ninguna de estas actividades que ponen a buen uso al Internet y que pretenden culturizar y movilizar, si me pregunto qué pasaría
si en lugar de promocionar maravillas geográficas, por un momento habláramos en especie e imagináramos que todo ese esfuerzo de
movilización mundial hubiera servido para alcanzar otro tipo de maravillas. Así, por ejemplo, imaginemos que se erradicarse la
sobrepoblación de algunos países, que se esfumasen la religión y la política mal entendidas, que desapareciese el abuso infantil o se
solucionase la pobreza además de borrar la corrupción y la violencia. La primera maravilla sería, por supuesto, ver resuelto, de una vez
por todas, el hambre feroz que azota a gran parte de la humanidad.
No acabo de comprender cómo podemos celebrar Olimpiadas, que por cierto, yo no me pierdo, o ver películas o eventos deportivos de
los que los protagonistas ganan millones y millones al año. No entiendo como podemos volcarnos tan apasionadamente en la elección
de legados históricos, cuando la población de un continente entero está a punto de desaparecer consumido por la enfermedad, la miseria
y por las aguas del Atlántico; cuando en pleno siglo XXI existen seres humanos que no tienen derecho a decir lo que piensan, y ni tan
siquiera a pensar; cuando la violencia, en toda su gama de posibilidades y en el mejor de los casos nos ha coartado la espontaneidad y
nos tiene paralizados; cuando males sociales como la corrupción, las drogas y el abuso infantil acechan literalmente en cada esquina. Y
ya no hablemos ni de la deforestación, ni de la destrucción de la capa de ozono, ni del envenenamiento de las aguas, ni del peor de los
peores males NUEVOS de nuestro mundo: el hambre.
Está muy bien preservar los legados históricos y culturales, o viajar al espacio, o celebrar eventos deportivos universales. Pero, ahora
que sabemos que este modelo de movimiento cibernético funciona o que somos capaces de movilizarnos de forma tan imponente, ¿no
podríamos aplicarlo, pero de verdad, para que ningún niño del mundo pase hambre, ni sea explotado, ni maltratado y para
que todos tengan una oportunidad justa de futuro? Pregunto.
I voted too. I went on the Internet encouraged – or, pressured – by my very patriotic Peruvian friend Ana and, after taking a look to the
Wonder candidates, I voted. La Alambra because it is from Spain; also the Egyptian Pyramids, because I have seen them, and of
course, Machu Picchu, because, among other things, and knowing her, I would not have the courage to look at my friend in the face and
tell her that the Peruvian Wonder was not among my favorites.
So this Swiss adventurer, Bernard Weber, as if it were no big deal, stages this huge media circus, unraveling the largest voting spree in
the history of the Internet, and then, with a little pinch of culture, and a good dash of tourist currency gold, is able to amaze the entire
world. The rest is history. And all that, according to the official version, in defense of the universal heritage, and to
get the masses interested in culture. And that they did!
Let us not get into whether it was a profitable business, or whether or not it made sense. I am always in awe of those who are equipped
with that special talent which enables them to create a vision, buy into it, and then sell it to others. As a matter of fact, I envy them. On
the other hand, I do not consider myself a party pooper, but there is something about the way in which lately everything is measured by
its marketing potential that leaves behind a scorched after-odor. While I do not criticize any of these activities which put the Internet to
good use and try to spread and mobilize, I do ask myself what would happen if instead of promoting geographic wonders, for a moment
we went in-kind and we imagined that this whole world mobilizing effort could serve to achieve a different type of Wonders. According to
this, for example, the overpopulation of some countries would be eradicated, misconceived religions and politics would be vanished,
child abuse would cease to exist and poverty would be resolved, in addition to erasing corruption and violence. The first Wonder would
have to be seeing, of course, an end once and for all, to the fierce hunger, that whips a great portion of humankind.
I cannot quite grasp how we can celebrate Olympic Games, which, by the way, I never miss, or watch movies or sports events, the
main characters of which make millions and millions a year. I cannot understand how we are able to so passionately support the voting
of historical legacy, when the population of an entire continent is about to disappear consumed by disease, by misery and by the Atlantic
waters; or when well into the 21st Century, there are human beings who do not have the right to voice an opinion, and not even to have
one; when violence, in all its range of possibilities and in the best case scenario, has stifled out spontaneity and has us paralyzed; when
social evils such as corruption, drugs and child abuse, are literally lurking around each corner. And let us not even talk about
deforestation, or the destruction of the ozone layer, nor the poisoning of our waters. Let us not talk about the worst of the worst of the
NEW evils of our world: Hunger.
Preserving a historical and cultural legacy, traveling to outer space or celebrating universal sporting events are all good things. However,
now that we know that this type of cyberspace movement model works, and that it is possible to mobilize ourselves in such an
impressive way, could we not apply it, but for real this time, so that no child in the world goes hungry, nor he or she is exploited, nor
abused, and so that they will all have a fair chance for their future? Just asking.

proyecto del embalse del Amazonas tan
elogiado por líderes empresariales como

las reformas constitucionales que

Salazar, subsecretario de asuntos
religiosos del Ministerio del Interior, dijo
esta semana que el gobierno está
demasiado ocupado como para
considerar la propuesta hecha por la
Archidiócesis de México de que se le
otorgue al clero «total» libertad de
expresión en asuntos políticos y permitir
que se permita a las escuelas públicas
impartir educación religiosa. «No vemos
posibilidad alguna de poder tratar este
asunto en estos momentos,» dijo Salazar.

Regulators granted preliminary approval
Monday to a massive Amazon dam project
praised by business leaders as a way to
prevent possible energy shortages but
criticized by environmentalists as a
potential environmental disaster. The
approval by the Ibama national
environmental protection agency means
companies can soon begin bidding to
construct the project, which would
generate electricity and allow barges to
navigate 2,600 miles to upstream
tributaries in Peru and Bolivia. Other
permits must also be obtained before the
multiple dam project gets under way, but
Monday’s move was a key regulatory step
and is sure to prompt big construction
companies to line up to participate in the
project expected to cost 20 billion to 28

Copper exports have surged in this
Caribbean nation with no active copper
mines — thanks to thieves who plunder
power and telephone lines. Scrap metal
thieves also thrive in Brazil, where vandals
sawed off the arms of a bronze statue of
soccer legend Pele last month. In Jamaica,
bandits ripped up tracks and cables from
an old Kingston railway station. Even the
U.S. has not escaped. In Fort Wayne,
Ind., thousands of dollars worth of copper
gutters were stripped from a church in the
middle of the night last month. Theft of
scrap metal has increased sharply in
recent years as prices have risen. Copper
is the most tempting target because it

Rule Soon on
Reforms
A government official has ruled out the
immediate approval of constitutional
reforms that would allow Mexico’s Roman
Catholic Church to get involved in politics.
Florencio Salazar, deputy secretary of
religious affairs for the Interior Department,
said Wednesday that the government is
too busy to consider a proposal by the
Archdiocese of Mexico to give the clergy
«total» freedom of expression in political
affairs and to let public schools offer
religious education.
«We do not see any possibility for this
issue being dealt with right now,» Salazar
said. He did not say when the government
would rule on the reform. AP

Nicaraguan police said officers
thwarted a plan this week to free 21 jailed
members of Mexico’s Sinaloa drug cartel
convicted of cocaine trafficking. «Gunmen
planned to free the men while they were
en route to a courtroom where they would
hear their sentences later Tuesday,»
National Police Commissioner Alonso
Sevilla said. Sevilla said other prison
inmates told authorities of the plan and
that information led them to Diego Zamora,
a 35-year-old alleged drug trafficker linked
to the Sinaloa cartel. «A search Tuesday

incarcerated, led police to a stash of

El primer Premio Medalla Cortez jamás celebrado – que reconoce la excelencia en
radiodifusión Hispana – fue entregado la pasada semana a nuestro Rafael Orlando
en la Conferencia de Radio Hispana Radio Ink.
The first ever Medalla Cortez Award - which recognizes excellence in Hispanic radio
broadcasting – was presented to our Rafael Orlando at the inaugural Radio Ink
Hispanic Radio Conference.
Rafael Orlando Dosman, Director de programación y locutor del programa de la mañana de 930am
La Exitosa (WYUS) fue elegido como personalidad del año de las emisoras de radio de los EE.UU. en los
mercados 11 +. Rafael fue honrado con este galardón entre cientos de participantes de todo el país en el
formato más atractivo – la radio hispana.
Hace ya doce años que las ondas radiofónicas del sur de Delaware se oyen en español en la voz de
Rafael Orlando. Este señor de enorme bigote y gran carisma, comenzó emitiendo en español dos horas
los sábados. Conforme fue creciendo la comunidad hispana de la zona, fueron aumentando también las
horas de programación en español de esta emisora que en la actualidad emite las veinticuatro horas del
día durante los siete días de la semana.
Rafael Orlando comenzó su carrera radiofónica en su Panamá natal en 1974 y se vino a vivir a
Delaware en 1995 donde ha trabajado desde entonces con mucho éxito en La Exitosa (WYUS)
durante los últimos 12 años.
Sobre el galardón recibido, Rafael orlando dice, “significa ver el esfuerzo, no sólo
hablando en mi persona sino en las diferentes personas que han hecho que esto sea
realidad. En un estado tan pequeño como lo es Delaware es importante ver que si
hay personas que están tratando de que la radio y la prensa lleven este mensaje
de informativo cultural y de entretenimiento a sus oyentes y lectores. Espero que
en el futuro haya más hispanos a los que se les puedan reconocer sus labores de
comunicación.
“Para mi la radio es sumamente importante como instrumento de
comunicación, sobre todo en esta área debido a que sin la radio los hispanos
no tienen ninguna forma de informarse de lo que está sucediendo local o
internacionalmente. Les informamos de los retrasos por el mal tiempo, les acercamos
la información local sobre las oficinas públicas de salud. La radio es lo más efectivo.”
¿Qué le duele a este hombre de la radio? “Lo que más me inquieta es cómo a
veces tratan a las personas hispanas en ciertos lugares. No sólo a los
indocumentados, sino que es como si fueran todos del mismo lugar, de
una calidad más baja que cualquier anglo. No los tratan con el
mismo respeto.”
¿Qué le hace sonreír? “Sonrío cuando veo que
he hecho algo que ha satisfecho a la gente a la que
estoy sirviendo y, claro, con las cosas buenas de
la vida.”
¿Qué le hace vibrar? “¡Todo me hace vibrar
a mi! Puede ser la cosa muy pequeña. Soy
una persona que me levanto por la mañana
con mucha vibra, si no, ¿cómo podría yo
motivar a los oyentes a vivir con ese espíritu
alegre y con esas ganas de seguir
prosperando y viviendo en el ambiente
en el que viven?”
¿Qué le quita el sueño? “Trato de
que nada ni nadie me quite el sueño,
sobre todo porque entonces no podría
funcionar. Yo intento tratar de resolver
el mismo día cualquier cosa, y si no,
intento buscar la forma si es que
hay una solución. Si hay una
solución se arregla. Donde hay
un problema hay una solución.”
Ah, otra cosa… “Me da
mucho gusto es que tengamos otros
medios de comunicación como por
ejemplo el Tiempo Hispano que me está
entrevistando. Su editor, el Sr. Gabriel
Pilonieta se ha interesado por mantener
informada a la comunidad con este semanario
bilingüe que no es sólo comercial sino
informativo y educativo. Ojala que los otros
medios, tanto radio, como televisión, como prensa
escrita hicieran lo mismo por intentar servir a la
comunidad.

Rafael Orlando Dosman, Program Director and morning show host of 930am La Exitosa (WYUS) was
selected as personality of the year for U.S. radio stations in markets 11 +. Rafael was awarded the honor
among hundreds of entries from across the country in the hottest new format – Hispanic Radio.
It has already been twelve years since the radio waves of Southern Delaware are heard in Spanish
through the voice of Rafael Orlando. This man with a huge mustache and great charisma, began broadcasting
in Spanish two hours on Saturdays. As the Hispanic community of the area grew, so did the Spanish
broadcasting hours at this station which at present broadcasts twenty-four/seven.
Rafael Orlando began his broadcasting career in back in his native Panama in 1974 and came to live
in Delaware in 1995 where he has worked ever since, with much success at La Exitosa (WYUS) for the
past 12 years.
On the award received Rafael Orlando says “it represents the effort, not only speaking
about myself, but also about all the different people that have made it come true. In a state
as small as Delaware it is important to see that there are people that are trying for radio
and press to carry that cultural and entertainment message to their listeners and
readers. I hope in the future there will be more Hispanics who are recognized for their
broadcasting work.”
“To me radio is extremely important communication tool, especially in this area
especially because without the radio Hispanics do not have any way of being informed
of what is going on locally or internationally. We inform them of the inclement weather
delays, we bring them the local information that regarding public health offices. Radio
is the most effective way.”
What makes this radio man hurt? “What bothers me the most is how sometimes they
treat Hispanic people in certain places. Not only the undocumented; it is as if they are

What makes him smile? “I smile when I see I have
done something that has satisfied the people I serve
and, of course, the good things in life.”
What makes him vibrate? “Everything makes me
vibrate! It can be a very small thing. I am the type of
person that gets up in the morning with much
vibration, otherwise, how would I be able to
motivate the listeners to live with that lively spirit
and that desire to keep going and living in the
atmosphere they live in?
What keeps him awake at night? “I try
for nothing or no one to take my sleep
away, especially because otherwise I
would not be able to function. I try to
solve anything the same day, and if
not, I try to find the way if there is a
solution. If there is a solution, it can
be fixed. Where there is a problem
there is a solution.”
Oh, and another thing… “It
makes me very happy that there
is other media, as for example El
Tiempo Hispano which I am being
interviewed by. Its editor, Mr.
Gabriel Pilonieta has made it a point
to keep the community informed with
this bilingual weekly which is not only
commercial but informative and
educational. Hopefully there will be

«Oye tu»
Ahora que se ha posado el polvo de la muy anticipada llegada del “IPhone,” de la película “The
Transformers,” y de “Live Earth,” sólo por mencionar unos pocos, ya podemos todos redirigir nuestra
atención hacia nuestras vidas en general…Este…¿Qué tal el tiempo? Se siente, pero tras darle
muchas vueltas, este tema no se puede ignorar, ya que de un modo u otro, nos afecta a todos. Piense
en las inundaciones que están ocurriendo en nuestro país y en Europa y los terribles incendios que
están azotando a la costa oeste debido a las olas de sequía; ¿cómo ignorar todo eso? Yo fui una de
los dos billones de personas que se estima vieron la maratón de 24 horas “Live Earth” (tierra
viva) durante el que se considera el día más afortunado del año ó, si no es de los que cree
en el azar, otros estarían de acuerdo en que el sábado 07/07/07 fue un día esotérica
y numéricamente místico. El evento no se organizó para recaudar fondos, sino como
una herramienta de concienciación global sobre los drásticos cambios climáticos de
la tierra y de los patrones del tiempo debido al calentamiento global. También fue
un llamamiento a que todos participemos llevando a cabo cambios positivos
para ayudar al medio ambiente haciendo y dando pasos sencillos como son el
reciclaje, usando productos de bajo consumo de energía, plantando árboles,
etc. Live Earth fue televisado desde y para los siete continentes, con un
desfile de intérpretes espectacular, desde dos grupos re-unidos como
“Genesis” y “The Police,” hasta Duran-Duran, Madonna, Fergie, Jon Bon
Jovi, y muchos más. También se dieron cita activistas ‘verdes’ como Leonardo
DiCaprio, Cameron Díaz y, por supuesto el Cruzado por antonomasia, el Sr. Al
Gore. Este fue un esfuerzo muy bien intencionado de promover la acción
deliberada desde un punto de vista global por salvar a nuestro planeta y ayudar
a nuestro medio ambiente; sin embargo muchos arg irán lo contrario justificando este
concierto maratón de 24 horas como otro evento más del estilo de Live Aid y Live 8.
Está claro que el mensaje y la misión de Live Earth son diferentes y únicos en comparación
a los anteriores eventos de tal magnitud. También debemos reconocer el éxito que está en boca
de todos, o sea, la banda de cinco miembros compuesta por cinco investigadores científicos de la
Estación de Investigaciones de Rothera enAntárctica llamada “Nunatak,” que en groenlandés significa
“cumbre.” Esta banda jamás había actuado antes para un público de más de 17 personas, que es el
número total de miembros de la comunidad entera de colegas de la estación de investigaciones de
Rothera. En principio, la idea de Gore había sido llevar por avión a una banda para actuar en
Antárctica, pero esta idea fue abandonada rápidamente debido a que julio es temporada de pleno
invierno y no pueden aterrizar ni amerizar ni aviones ni barcos debido a las condiciones del tiempo.
Llámenlo suerte, o quizá fueron esos números especiales 07/07/07 de ese día del año en el que Al
Gore decidío convertir su visón en realidad y en la cual su mensaje fue escuchado en todo el globo.
Hoy, al oír la canción de Madonna, Oye Tu (Hey You),” recuerde que esto es un llamamiento a la

Now that the dust has settled from the much anticipated arrival of the “IPhone,” the movie “The
Transformers,” and “Live Earth,” just to mention a few, we can all re-direct our attention to our lives in
general…Hmm? How about the weather? Sorry, but after much thought, this topic can’t be ignored
because one way or another, we are all affected by it. Think about the floods that are taking place in
our country and in Europe and the terrible fires in the west coast due to droughts; how can we ignore
that? I was one of the estimated two billion people who watched the 24-hour marathon of “Live
Earth” in what was believed to be the luckiest day of the year or, if you do not
believe in chances, others would agree that Saturday 07/07/07 was an
esoterically and numerically mystical day. The event was organized,
not as a fundraiser, but as a tool to raise global awareness on the
Earth’s drastic climate changes and weather patterns due to
global warming. It was also a cry for all of us to take part in
making positive changes to help the environment by doing
and taking simple steps like recycling, using energy efficient
products, plant trees, etc. Live Earth was televised from and
to all seven continents and the line-up of performers was
spectacular, from two reunited groups such as “Genesis”
and “ The Police,” to Duran-Duran, Madonna, Fergie, Jon
Bon Jovi, and many more. There were also some GreenConscious activists like Leonardo DiCaprio, Cameron Diaz
and of course the crusader himself Mr. Al Gore. This was a
very well intended effort to promote conscious action from a
global standpoint to save our planet and help our environment; but
many will argue the opposite and justify this 24-hour marathon concert
as just another event in line with summer concerts such as LiveAid and
Live 8. It is clear that the message and mission of Live Earth are different and
unique compared to previous events of such magnitude. We should also recognize
the hit that has people talking, that is, the five-member band made of scientific researchers from the
Rothera Research Station in Antarctica called “Nunatak,” which in Greenlandic means “summit.” This
band had never performed for an audience of more than 17 people, which is the total number of
members from the entire community of colleagues from the Rothera research station. Originally, Gore’s
idea was to fly in a band in order to perform in Antarctica, but this idea was quickly abandoned since
July is mid-winter season and no planes or boats can land or take off due to the weather conditions.
Call it luck, or maybe it was those special 07/07/07 numbers on that day of the year on which Al Gore
decided to have his vision become a reality and on which his message was heard all over the globe.
Today, when you hear Madonna’s song “Hey You,” remember this is a call for action in opening our
hearts and minds in an attempt to make our planet a home we can all enjoy living in for many hundreds
of thousands of years to come.

§ 8-201. ESTABLECIMIENTO DE LA RELACIÓN MADRE-MENOR Y
PADRE-MENOR.
(a) La relación madre-menor se establece entre una
mujer y un menor por:
(1) Haber dado a luz la mujer al menor;
(2) Adjudicarse la maternidad de la mujer; o
(3) Adopción del menor por parte de la mujer.
(b) La relación padre-menor se establece entre un
hombre y un menor por:
(1) La presunción irrefutable de la paternidad del
menor por parte del hombre según § 8-204 de este
título;
(2) Un reconocimiento efectivo de la paternidad por
parte del hombre según el sub-capítulo III de este
capítulo, a no ser que dicho reconocimiento haya
sido rescindido o refutado con éxito;
(3) Adjudicación de la paternidad del hombre;
(4) Adopción del menor por parte del hombre; o
(5) Consentimiento del hombre a la reproducción
asistida por parte de una mujer bajo el sub-capítulo
VII de este capítulo y que haya resultado en el
nacimiento del menor. (74 Del. Laws, c. 136, § 1; 70

§ 8-202. LA NO DISCRIMINACIÓN EN BASE AL ESTADO CIVIL.
Un menor nacido de padre y madre que no se
encuentren casados entre si tiene los mismos

Ahí fuera hay al meno un par de
millones de adolescentes que este
verano comenzarán sus primeros
trabajos en serio. Si conoce a uno de
esos adolescentes, una pregunta que
podrían hacerle sería “¿en qué
consisten mis impuestos de la
Seguridad Social?” Alguno incluso
podría preguntar, “¿qué es FICA?”
Aquí va una guía rápida sobre lo que
cualquier Nuevo empleado debe
saber sobre la Seguridad Social.
En primer lugar, por ley, el patrón
debe retener impuestos en concepto
de Seguridad Social de la nómina del
trabajador a razón de un 6.2 por ciento
de la paga bruta. (Además deberá retenerse un impuesto por Medicare
de la nómina a razón de un 1.45 por ciento.) Aunque normalmente en
la nómina de un empleado aparece como “Social Security Taxes”
Impuestos de la Seguridad Social,” a veces la deducción se llama
“FICA taxes” (Impuestos FICA), que significa Federal Insurance
Contributions Act (Acta de Contribución de Seguro Federal), en

caso de fallecimiento, sus familias (o futuras familias) podrán ser
receptores de los beneficios como sobrevivientes también basado en
su trabajo. Y de seguro que en la actualidad cuentan con familiares –
por ejemplo abuelos – que ya disfrutan de beneficios de la Seguridad
Social a los que contribuyen sus impuestos de la Seguridad Social.
Es posible que, debido a que se encuentran muy lejos de la
jubilación, les cueste entender la conveniencia de hacer pagos por
beneficios que puede que estén a 50 años vistas. Pero también
deben saber que los impuestos de la Seguridad Social que están
pagando pueden proporcionar valiosos beneficios en caso de
incapacitación. Los estudios realizados demuestran que una persona
de 20 años tiene una probabilidad de 3 entre 10 de quedar minusválido
en algún momento antes de alcanzar la edad de jubilación.
Por último, si tiene la oportunidad de hablar con algún trabajador
nuevo sobre su puesto y sobre la Seguridad Social, recuérdele que
si algún patrón en algún momento le llega a ofrecer el hacer la vista
gorda a las reglas, y pagarles en “dinero negro”, que deben
rechazarlo. Aunque es posible que el empleado vea unos pocos
dólares más, en su paga, por otro lado, con este arreglo no acumularía
créditos para la Seguridad Social.
También recuérdeles a los nuevos empleados que es mejor que
no lleven encima su tarjeta de la Seguridad Social. Es un documento

There are at least a

out there who will be
starting their first real jobs
this summer. If you know
one of these teenagers, a
question that you may be
asked is “what are my
Social Security taxes all
about?” Some may even
ask “what is FICA?” Here
is a quick primer on what
any new worker needs to
know about Social Security.
First,
by
law,
employers must withhold from a worker’s paycheck Social Security
taxes at the rate of 6.2 percent of gross pay. (In addition, a Medicare
payroll tax of 1.45 percent of pay must also be withheld.) While
usually referred to on an employee’s payroll statement as “Social
Security taxes,” sometimes the deduction is labeled as “FICA taxes”,
which stands for Federal Insurance Contributions Act, a reference to
the original Social Security Act. Interestingly, for many younger
workers, the Social Security taxes withheld may actually be more than
is being paid in state or federal income tax. It is therefore important to
understand how that money is used. By paying Social Security taxes
now, they are providing for their financial future.
The taxes they pay now translate to a lifetime of protection, whether
they retire or become disabled. And in the event that they die, their
family (or future family) may be able to receive survivors benefits
based on their work as well. And today they probably have family
members — grandparents, for example — who already are enjoying
Social Security benefits which their Social Security taxes help provide.
Because they are a long way from retirement, they may have a
tough time appreciating the value of benefit payments that could be
some 50 years distant. But they should also know that the Social
Security taxes they are paying can provide valuable disability benefits.
Studies do show that a 20-year-old has about a three in 10 chance of
becoming disabled sometime before reaching retirement age.
Finally, if you have the opportunity to talk to any new workers
about their job and Social Security, remind them that if an employer
offers to bend the rules and pay them “under the table,” they should
refuse. While the employee may see a few more dollars in his or her
pay, the employee would not earn Social Security credits under this
illegal arrangement.
Also remind new workers that they probably shouldn’t be carrying
their Social Security card around with them. It’s a document that
needs to be safeguarded and protected. And if they ask more questions
than you can to answer, just tell them that the next time they are surfing
the web, they should stop by our webpage at www.socialsecurity.gov.

La cuenta regresiva encontró en una casa de Laurel, DE, a miles de kilómetros del Perú, a unos
entusiastas compatriotas que fueron llegando todos con mucha ilusión y con el único propósito de no
perderse aquel instante de gloria. Música, comida y baile fueron alargando el momento decisivo, ese que
estábamos anhelando vivir, ser testigos de uno de los momentos más importantes en la historia del país:
¡Ay! Si el Machu Picchu, la ciudadela inca tantas veces visitada, se convirtiera en una de las Siete
Maravillas del Mundo Moderno. Ese momento se inició cuando el reloj marcó las 5 de la tarde del día siete
de Julio del 2007 (07/07/07).
Minutos inacabables comenzaron a transcurrir desde que apareció en la pantalla gigante Neil Armstrong,
el primer hombre que pisó la luna, y comunicó al mundo cual había sido elegida la primera maravilla
moderna: la Gran Muralla China. Ingrid se maltrataba los dedos de angustia, mientras que a su costado,
aquí, una servidora, buscaba una respuesta en la voz del presentador. No fue hasta casi diez minutos
después de que comenzara la ceremonia que al fin sucedió lo que estábamos esperando; si señores, el
Macchu Picchu, nuestro Macchu Picchu había sido declarado una de las Nuevas siete Maravillas del
Mundo, y en ese momento la casa estalló de alegría mientras nos abrazábamos los unos a los otros de
alivio y de emoción, al tiempo que entre codos y brazos entrelazados aparecía en el televisor el orgulloso
alcalde de Macchu Picchu ataviado con su típica vestimenta Inca, recibiendo el galardón. El gringo del
grupo, que “no hablar Espaniol” y que no podía más con su cuerpo de tanto alboroto, y que tampoco
entendía nada de todos modos, igual acompañaba a los demás regalando sonrisas. Y así son las
celebraciones de éxito, cuando el éxito parece tocarte de tan cerca aunque esté tan lejos. Y así es la
pasión que despierta ‘la ciudadela’ en aquellos que mantienen un romance con ella, y así seguirá por el
resto de los días, ya que este reconocimiento universal coloca a la Ciudadela del Machu Picchu en el
peldaño que se merece, en ese que los peruanos y algún que otro visitante que ha tenido el privilegio de
asistir a su maravilla en toda su magnitud, siempre lo hemos colocado. Ahora, por fin, el mundo no puede
por más que rendirse ante su imponente estructura.
Gracias a cien millones de votos llegados de alrededor del mundo, el Machu Picchu fue elegido por
mayoría popular. Los peruanos somos menos de 29 millones, y menos todavía los que contamos con
acceso a Internet, con seguridad menos de la mitad, lo cual quiere decir que no nos hemos elegido
nosotros mismos, sino que el reconocimiento viene del resto del mundo. Se ha premiado la belleza de la
ciudad, su historia, su arquitectura, además de la pregunta obligada que se hace cualquiera que lo visita,
o sea, los ‘¡¿cómo rayos hicieron los incas para...?!’.
Fue el norteamericano Hiram Bingham quien dio a conocer esta maravilla de la historia al mundo
entero cuando llegó al Machu Picchu en 1911. Hoy, gracias al apoyo de muchos, toma un merecido lugar
de preferencia tanto en el espacio como en el tiempo, tanto en la geografía como en la historia. Y para
terminar…¡SI SE PUDO!

The final countdown found some enthusiastic fellow compatriots in a home in Laurel, DE, thousands
of miles from Peru, who had been arriving with much excitement and with the only purpose of not
missing that instant of glory. Music, food and dance kept stretching the decisive moment, the one we
were all yearning to experience, witnessing one of the most important moments in the history of the
country: Oh! If Machu Picchu, the Inca citadel so often visited, were to become one of the Seven
Wonders of the Modern World. That moment began when the clock struck 5 p.m. on July 7 of 2007
(07/07/07).
Endless minutes went by from the moment Neil Armstrong, the first man to lay foot on the moon,
came on the giant screen and communicated to the world which had been chosen the first modern
marvel of the world: The Great Wall of China. Ingrid mistreated her fingers with worry while at her
side, yours truly, sought an answer in the voice of the host. It was not until 10 minutes after the
ceremony had begun that what we were hoping for happened: Yes, ladies and gentlemen, Machu
Picchu, our Machu Picchu, had been named one of the Seven New Wonders of the World. At that
moment, that house exploded with joy while we embraced one another with relief and excitement,
watching at the same time, between entwined elbows and arms as the proud mayor of Machu Picchu
appeared on the screen dressed in typical Inca gear, receiving the award. The gringo of the group
who, “no hablar Espaniol” and who was beside himself with so much agitation and did not understand
anything anyway, still partook with the others by giving away his smiles. That is what celebrations of
success are about, when success seems to touch you so closely even when it is so far away. That
is the kind of passion ‘the citadel’ ignites in those who have a romance with it. That is the way it will
continue to be for ever now that this universal recognition places the Machu Picchu citadel on the
rung it deserves, the one on which Peruvians and other visitors that have had the privilege of being
in the presence of all its splendor, have always placed it on. Now, finally, the World cannot but
surrender before this great structure.
Thanks to the millions of votes arrived from around the world, Machu Picchu was voted by
popular majority. We Peruvians are less than 29 million, and there are even less of us with Internet
access, with all certainty, less than half of us. This means that we have not chosen ourselves, but
rather, the recognition has come from the rest of the world. What was considered was the beauty of
the city, its history, its architecture and also the mandatory question that all visitors ask themselves, in
other words, ‘how on earth were these Incas able to...?!’.
It was a North American, Hiram Bingham, who let the entire World know about this wonder of
history when he arrived in Machu Picchu in 1911. Today, thanks to the support of many it holds a
deserved place of honor both in space and time, both geographically and historically. Finally, as we
say in Spanish, ¡SI SE PUDO! (it was possible).

La ley de Delaware le
pisa los talones a los
depredadores sexuales
Ya no seguirán avanzando las manecillas del reloj para las víctimas de abuso
sexual infantil ya que este pasado martes en Dover la Gobernadora aprobó la ley
“Acta de la Víctima Infantil,” que elimina la ley de prescripciones de dos años que
pesa sobre los casos de enjuiciamiento en los casos de abuso sexual infantil.
La propuesta de ley también se refiere al tema de las víctimas para las cuales la ley de prescripciones
ya ha vencido, proporcionando una ventana de oportunidad de dos años durante la cual poder denunciar
a sus abusadores. Por otro lado, la propuesta de la cámara 242, afín a esta legislación y que busca
ampliar elActa de la Víctima Infantil eliminando la inmunidad soberana del estado en lo que se refiere a los
casos de abuso sexual infantil, está pendiente de lo que ocurra en el Senado.
La propuesta del Senado número 29, legislación que enmienda el Título 10 del Código de Delaware
mediante la eliminación de la ley de prescripciones en los casos de enjuiciamiento referentes a abuso
sexual infantil. La propuesta, respaldada por la Senadora Karen Peterson, el Senador David McBride, la
Representante Deborah Hudson y por el Representante Greg Lavelle, también proporciona una ventana
de oportunidad de dos años durante la cual las víctimas podrán presentar una acción civil para casos que
antes eran excluidos por la ley vigente.
“Desde que pasamos la Ley de Megan en 1998, hemos estado trabajando para afinar y fortalecer las
leyes de Delaware relativas a los agresores sexuales,” dijo la Gobernadora Ruth Ann Minner. “Los

Esta legislación altera la ley de prescripciones que hasta estos momentos era de dos años de modo
que de ahora en adelante, ya no existirá una ley de prescripciones en las causas de acción basadas en
el abuso sexual de un menor. Además, la SB 29 proporciona a las víctimas de abuso sexual infantil que
no contaban con la posibilidad de presentar una denuncia contra su agresor debido a la fecha de
caducidad de la ley de prescripciones, a que puedan presentarla frente a la Corte Suprema durante un
periodo de dos años.
“Tanto la Representante Deborah Hudson como yo nos sentimos orgullosas de haber jugado un
papel en la aprobación de esta ley que representa un hito,” dijo la Senadora Karen Peterson, autora y
principal promotora de esta ley. “Como resultado de esta aprobación, ahora los niños de Delaware están

The clock will no longer be ticking for the victims of child sexual abuse. This past
Tuesday in Dover, Gov. Minner signed into law the “Child Victims’ Act,” which
eliminates the two-year statute of limitations on civil suits relating to child sexual
abuse cases.
The bill also deals with the issue of victims for whom the statute of limitations has already tolled,
providing a two-year window of opportunity for them to sue their abusers. A related piece of legislation,
House Bill 242, which seeks to expand the Child Victim’s Act by waiving the state’s sovereign immunity in
relation to child sexual abuse cases, is pending action in the Senate.
Senate Bill 29, is legislation that amends Title 10 of the Delaware Code by removing the statute of
limitations for civil suits relating to child sexual abuse. The bill, sponsored by Senator Karen Peterson,
Senator David McBride, Representative Deborah Hudson, and Representative Greg Lavelle, also provides
a two-year window in which victims can bring a civil action in cases previously barred by the current
statute.
“Ever since we passed Megan’s Law in 1998, we’ve been working to refine and strengthen Delaware’s
laws relating to sex offenders,” said Governor Ruth Ann Minner. “Sexual predators that victimize children
are learning that Delaware is not going to tolerate their horrendous crimes against the children of our state.
I applaud the efforts of Senator Peterson and all of the co-sponsors for taking the lead on passing this vitally
important legislation.”
This legislation changes the statute of limitations, which is currently two years, so that going forward
there will no longer be a statute of limitations for a cause of action based upon the sexual abuse of a minor.
Additionally, SB 29 provides that victims of child sexual abuse, who are barred from filing a lawsuit against
their abuser due to the expiration of a statute of limitation, can file a claim in Superior Court for a period of
two years.
“Rep. Deborah Hudson and I are proud to have played a role in getting this landmark legislation
passed,” said Senator Karen Peterson, the bill’s author and primary sponsor. “As a result of its passage,
Delaware’s children are safer, child sexual abuse victims can finally get justice, and those who molest
children will find that they no longer have a safe haven in Delaware.”

Ivania del Carmen Bautista nació el 13 de julio de 1991
en Brooklyn, Nueva York. Es hija de Idania Francisca de

El 17 de junio de 1993, Ivania se convirtió en hermana mayor a raíz del
nacimiento de Jesús Bautista. Un año más tarde, ella y su familia se mudaron
a Delaware donde Ivania asistió a una academia de modelos hasta los seis
años. Durante ese tiempo quedó en primer lugar en un concurso de modelos
de su escuela. A los siete años fue a la Escuela de San Pablo (Saint Paul’s
School) hasta que se graduó del octavo curso. En esta escuela participó en
deportes como el baloncesto y danza. Ivania siempre ha sido una estudiante
de matrícula de honor con calificaciones sobresalientes. Se graduó el 3 de
junio del 2005 como la primera de su clase y también fue aceptada como
miembro de la Sociedad Honorífica Juvenil Nacional. En estos momentos
Ivania asiste a la escuela secundaria Saint Elizabeth continuando con su
buena trayectoria. Sigue siendo una estudiante destacada académicamente y
está tomando clases avanzadas. Hasta el momento, en la secundaria ha
disfrutado practicando deportes como animación (cheerleading) y atletismo, y
danza. Es una muchacha bien equilibrada a la que le gusta ayudar en lo que
puede. Le encantan los animales y a menudo hace voluntariado en los
refugios para animales locales. La mayor parte de su tiempo lo pasa en casa
cuidando de sus dos perros y de vez en cuando de algún que otro cachorrito.

Ivania del Carmen Bautista was born July 13, 1991 in Brooklyn, NY. She is the
daughter of Idania Francisca who is from Nicaragua and Roque Agosto Bautista
from the Dominican Republic. Ivania started school when she was two and a half
years old; she was always a very bright girl
On June 17, 1993, Ivania became an older sister when Ivan de Jesús Bautista was born. A year later,
her and her family moved to Delaware where Ivania attended a modeling school until she was six. During
this time she won first place in a modeling contest from her school. When she was seven years old, she
attended Saint Paul’s school until she graduated in the eighth grade.At this school she was involved in sports
such as basketball and dance. Ivania was always an honor student with outstanding grades. She graduated
June 3, 2005 as valedictorian of her class, and was also inducted into the National Junior Honor Society.
Ivania is currently attending Saint Elizabeth High School and continues on her good path. She continues
being an honor student and taking advanced classes. So far, during high school she’s enjoyed sports such
as cheerleading and running track as well as track. She is a well-rounded girl who loves to help in any way
she can. She loves animals and often volunteers at local animal shelters. Most of her time is spent at home
taking care of her two dogs and occasionally a few puppies. Her hope and dreams for her future have never
changed since she was a little girl. She plans to attend the University of Delaware to study medicine and go
to medical school to become a cardiac surgeon. To this day her favorite quote is «Do not wish on a star, reach
for one.»

Ya habíamos hablado de Norma Espino en nuestro número 11 del 13 de abril de este año (Movimiento
a Kansas City) cuando junto con sus compañeras de proyecto Nataja Wells y Zinnia Dávila consiguió el
primer puesto del concurso Skills USA del estado de Delaware. Esto les valió un viaje a dicha ciudad a finales
de junio donde compitieron frente a 47 grupos de secundarias de otros estados, y de donde volvieron
portando una flamante medalla de bronce obtenida por su trabajo sobre movimiento ergonómico.
Al explicar Norma que era exigencia del proyecto el aplicar la información obtenida educando a la
comunidad y a nivel industrial y empresarial, no puedo resistir la tentación y le comento que yo paso muchas
horas sentada delante de mi computadora y le pregunto sobre cuáles son las medidas que debo tomar. Ella
de inmediato se presta a explicarme, “la screen (pantalla) siempre tiene que estar a la distancia de su mano
estirada; más lejos se fuerza la vista. Sus pies tienen que estar en un right angle (ángulo recto). Si ve sus pies
cruzados, los tiene que poner derechitos, y también los puede poner en banquito por un ratito para que
descansen. En sus manos tiene que tener un pad porque si no puede tener una enfermedad que se llama
carpal túnel (síndrome de túnel carpiano), ….” ¡Realmente se sabe su materia!
“Este premio me representó mucho porque aunque agarramos el bronce frente a 47 grupos del país no
salimos en el lugar 47,” comenta esta joven luchadora que añade, “Quiero volver otra vez el año que viene,
¡y voy a traer el primero!” Según explica Norma, “Este premio queda en tu record cuando vas a aplicar a
un college, y esto te enseña también a hablar en público y a hacer presentaciones. Esto te motiva a seguir
adelante.”
A los jóvenes de su edad les dice “que no se salgan de la escuela, que no la hagan aburrida, que la
hagan divertida para que agarren un better job opportunity (mejor oportunidad laboral), que dream big
(sueñen a lo grande) y que su sueño se haga realidad.” Y yo a ella le digo “You go girl!!”

prize.
We had already talked about Norma Espino in our edition 11 of this year’s April 13 (City Bound
Movement) when she and her project peers Nataja Wells and Zinnia Dávila obtained the first place of
Delaware’s Skills USA. This gave them the opportunity of a trip to Kansas City at the end of June where
they competed against 47 high school groups from other states, and from where they returned carrying a
new bronze medal for their project on ergonomic motion.
When Norma explains how it was a requirement of the project to apply the information obtained by
educating the community and at an industrial and business level, I cannot resist. I tell her that I spend many
hours sitting in front of my computer and I ask her about the measures that I should take. She immediately
lends herself to explain to me, “the screen always has to be at the distance of your stretched out hand;
further away it strains your eyes. Your feet need to be at a right angle. If you see your feet are crossed, you
need to make them nice and straight, and you can also prop them up on a little stool for a little while to rest
them. For your hands you need a pad, because if not you can get a disease called carpal tunnel …” She
really knows her subject!
“This award meant a lot to me because, even though we got the bronze against 47 groups in the
country, we did not come out in 47th place,” says this determined young woman, and she adds, “I want to
go back next year, and I am going to bring back the first prize!” Norma goes on to explain, “This prize stays
in your record when you apply at a college, and this also teaches you how to speak in public and how to
do presentations. This motivates you to keep going.”
To other high school students she says “don’t drop out of school, don’t make it boring, make it fun so you
can have a better job opportunity; dream big, and make your dream come true.” And I say to her “You go
girl!

Buñuelos de Plátanos
y Frijoles Negros
Ingredientes
2 1/2 libras de plátanos maduros
1 lata de frijoles negros (16 onzas)
2 cucharadas de aceite vegetal
1/3 taza de cebolla picadita
1 diente de ajo machacado
1/3 taza de harina
1/4 cucharita de sal
2 1/2 tazas de aceite vegetal
Hace 8 Buñuelos
Preparación
Cortar los extremos de los plátanos, y cortar cada plátano en 4 piezas.
Colocar piezas sin pelar en una caldera con agua suficiente para
cubrirlas. Poner en fuego alto hasta hervir, y después reducir fuego
inmediatamente para hervir a fuego lento por 25 minutos hasta que
suavicen. Escurrir y enfriar. Mientras tanto, suavemente aplastar frijoles
con tenedor. En un sartén, calentar las 2 cucharadas de aceite y añadir
cebollas y ajo; sofreír en fuego medio por 1 minuto. Añadir frijoles. Freír
por aproximadamente 3 a 4 minutos mientras moviendo, hasta que la
mezcla se engrose y se aleje de los lados de el sartén. Remover la piel
de los plátanos y colocarlos en un tazón. Hacer puré de los plátanos.
Añadir harina y sal. Tomar aproximadamente 1/4 taza de la mezcla y,
con manos mojadas para prevenir pegarse, formar bolitas y aplanar. Colocar 2 y 2 1/2 cucharadas de
los frijoles refritos en el centro y cerrar con otra “hoja” de la mezcla de plátanos. Ligeramente arreglar
los buñuelos para que sean circulares. En un sartén grande o freidor calentar 2 1/2 tazas de aceite.
Cuidadosamente poner 3 o 4 buñuelos en el aceite y freír por 1 ó 2 minutos, hasta que estén marrón
dorado. Escurrir en servilletas y servir caliente.

Black Bean Fritters
Ingredients
2 1/2 lb. ripe plantains (yellow with dark spots)
1 can black beans (16 ounces), well drained
2 tbsp. vegetable oil
1/3 cup finely chopped onion
1 clove garlic, minced
1/3 cup flour
1/4 tsp. salt
2 1/2 cups vegetable oil
Makes 8 fritters
Preparation
Cut ends off plantains, and cut each plantain into 4 pieces. Into large stockpot,
place unpeeled pieces and add enough water to cover generously. Set over
high heat and bring to a boil. Once at boil, immediately reduce heat to lowmedium and simmer, semi covered, 20 to 25 minutes, until pieces are forktender. Drain well and cool. In meantime, gently mash beans with hand
masher or back of fork until partially mashed. In skillet, heat 2 tbsp. oil and
add onion and garlic; sauté over medium heat 1 minute. Add semi-mashed
beans. Fry approximately 3 to 4 minutes while stirring, until mixture has
thickened and pulls away from sides of skillet. Remove skin from plantains
and place them in large bowl. Mash plantains until well broken up and fluffy.
Stir in flour and salt. Take approximately 1/4 cup of mixture and, with hands
slightly wet to prevent sticking, flatten and shape into 3-inch round patties. Press one patty against your
palm to make slight depression and place 2 to 2 1/2 tbsp. bean filling onto its center. Top with another
patty and pinch edges all around to seal filling. Lightly pat and shape filled patties into oval mounds. In
large skillet or fryer over medium-high heat, heat 2 1/2 cups oil. Carefully place 3 or 4 filled patties in hot
oil, and fry 1 to 2 minutes on each side, until golden brown. Drain onto paper towels and serve hot.

María Matos habla de su batalla contra el cáncer de seno y
anima a las latinas a que ‘no tengan miedo a saberlo. Tengan
miedo a no saberlo.»
María Matos conoce de primera mano lo importe que es la detección precoz del cáncer de
seno. Una mamografía le salvó la vida.
Matos, de 56 años, lleva sometiéndose a mamografías desde que cumplió los 40. La prueba
siempre le mostraba que no había nada, pero en Octubre del 2005 las «manchas sospechosas»
que aparecieron en la mamografía resultaron ser cáncer de seno. El cáncer fue detectado tan
precozmente que Matos ni siquiera había tenido tiempo de sentir el bulto.
«Cuando recibí una llamada de mi medico tenía conmigo al obispo católico,» dice Matos,
directora ejecutiva del Centro Comunitario Latinoamericano (LACC). «Fue el primero al que se
lo conté y rezó conmigo.» Matos se ha sometido a dos cirugías para eliminar el cáncer. Las
pruebas mostraron que su cáncer era agresivo por lo que también se sometió a quimioterapia y
radiaciones que a su vez le provocaron la caída del cabello. Matos se encontró luchando no sólo
contra su cáncer sino contra su compañía de seguros que se negaba a pagarle la prueba que
ayudaría a decidir el mejor curso de acción para su tratamiento.
«Someterme a la quimio y a las radiaciones fue devastador, luchar contra la compañía de
seguros, luchar contra la enfermedad, ir a una fiesta,» dice Matos. «pero no dejé de vivir. No
consiguió derrotarme; yo conseguí derrotarlo a él.»
Matos atribuye su éxito a sus amigos, a sus familiares y a Dios. Hubo iglesias de todo el
mundo celebrando círculos de oración por ella. «A muchas de esas personas muy trabajadoras
puede resultarles difícil pedir ayuda,» dice, «pero el cáncer puede resultar doloroso y
emocionalmente agotador y a veces sólo necesitas una mano amiga. Está bien que le sujeten la
mano a uno.»
Hoy Matos recibe terapia hormonal para ayudarla a evitar que se le reproduzca el cáncer.
Goza de excelente salud y quiere animar a otros con el ejemplo, especialmente a las latinas con
las que se encuentra en el LACC y que temen al cáncer.
«El cáncer de seno es curable, si te cuidas, si tomas medidas preventivas,» dice Matos. «No
deben tener miedo a la mamografía porque no quieran saberlo. Si lo averiguan a tiempo pueden
vivir 10, 20 ó 30 años más. No tengan miedo a saberlo. Tengan miedo a no saberlo.»

Maria Matos discusses her battle with breast cancer and encourages
Latinas «not to be afraid of knowing. Be afraid of not knowing.»
Maria Matos knows firsthand the importance of detecting breast cancer early. A mammogram saved her
life.
Matos, 56, has gotten a mammogram every year since turning age 40. The test always showed
nothing, but in October of 2005 «suspicious spots» on her mammogram turned out to be breast cancer. The
cancer was so early that Matos could not yet feel a lump.
«When I got the call from my doctor, I had the Catholic bishop here,» says Matos, the executive director
of the Latin American Community Center. «He was the first one I told, and he prayed with me.»
Matos had two surgeries to remove the cancer. Tests showed her cancer to be aggressive, so she
underwent chemotherapy and radiation, losing her hair along the way. And Matos found herself fighting not
just her cancer but also her insurance company, which refused to pay for a test to help determine the best
course of treatment.
«It was devastating to do chemo and radiation, fight the insurance, fight the disease, go to a party,»
Matos says. «But I didn’t stop living. It didn’t get the best of me; I got the best of it.»
Matos credits friends, family and God. Churches around the world did prayer circles for her. «Accepting
help can be difficult for many hard-working people,» she says, but «cancer can be painful and emotionally
draining and you just need a hand to hold. It’s okay to hold someone’s hand.»
Today, Matos takes hormonal therapy to help keep her cancer from coming back. Her health is
excellent, and she wants to encourage others by example, especially the Latinas she meets at LACC who
fear cancer.
«Breast cancer is curable, if you take care of yourself, if you take preventive measures,» Matos says.
«Don’t be scared to get a mammogram because you don’t want to know. If you know and it’s early, you
can live 10, 20 or 30 more years. Don’t be afraid of knowing. Be afraid of not knowing.»
Living Beyond Breast Cancer and the Delaware Breast Cancer Coalition will offer free mammograms
at 11:30 a.m. on Tuesday, July 17, at Westside Health Center, 1802 West 4th Street, Wilmington.
Women should bring a prescription or evidence of insurance. The uninsured may apply for a
mammogram through the «Screening for Life» program of the Delaware Department of Health and

Este año el Festival Hispano celebrará 13 años de la Cultura Hispana
en el condado de Sussex y todos estamos ansiosos de que llegue
ese día para compartirlo con nuestras familias. Por tal motivo El Centro
Cultural todos los años le ofrece la oportunidad a toda la comunidad
de Delaware que compartan con nosotros el Festival Hispano.
This year Festival Hispano will celebrate 13 years of the
Hispanic Culture in Sussex County and we are all very
excited for this day to come to share it with our families. This
is the reason why El Centro Cultural offers our Hispanic
community the opportunity to celebrate Festival Hispano
every year.
Como es tiempo de compartir queremos que conozcan más de esta gran
celebración con unos deliciosos, ricos y sabrosos platos típicos que nos ofrecen
nuestros puestos de comida. Todos los años contamos con más de diez puestos de
comida y con una variedad de platos típicos. Cada puesto de comida simboliza y
representa un país diferente, con su origen y sus costumbres. Este año tendremos la
oportunidad de ofrecerles platos típicos de países como; Puerto Rico, Brasil, México,
Guatemala, Perú, El Salvador y Chile.
Because it is time to share, we would like you to learn more about this huge
celebration with some of the delicious and typical foods that our food vendors
will offer this year. Every year we provide more than ten food vendor tables
and a variety of typical foods. Each food vendor symbolizes and represents
a different country, with its origin and customs. This year we will have the
opportunity to offer you typical foods from countries such as; Puerto Rico,
Brazil, México, Guatemala, Peru, El Salvador and Chile.
El Festival Hispano le permite a nuestros invitados saborear estos platos típicos y
poder llevar a nuestro paladar ese pedacito de nuestros países hispanos que tanto
añoramos. Como familia Hispana que somos, no importa en que parte del mundo
estemos, siempre nos llevamos un pedacito de nuestra tierra en el corazón y en el

organizaciones sin ánimo de lucro como el centro comunitario de La Esperanza, el
centro comunitario First State Community Action Agency, el centro de ayuda legal
Community Legal Aid Society y el centro de ayuda para padres Parent Information
Center, además de agencias estatales como Child Development Watch para familias
de niños de 0 a 3 con retrasos, Comisión de la Mujer de Delaware (Delaware

El Centro Cultural is proud to have so many
non-profit organizations, community agencies,
and small businesses represented at Festival
Hispano. People who come to Festival Hispano
can visit non-profit organizations such as La
Esperanza Community Center, First State
Community Action Agency, Community Legal
Aid Society, and Parent Information Center.
State Agencies such as the Child Development
Watch, Delaware Commission for Women,
Delaware Division of Human Relations,
Delaware Helpline, Delaware State Housing
Authority, Delaware State Parks, Division of
Child Support, and the State Fire Marshall’s
Office provide information about services and
community resources. Many organizations provide access to health information and health care

people buy airline tickets at travel agencies, to selling phone cards at convenience stores. We encourage
every organization to have a table at Festival Hispano in order to get their information out to the
community. This is a perfect event to reach thousands of Hispanic residents.

¿Alguna vez se han preguntado cómo se siente el ir en
un Ferry? La mayoría de las personas sueñan con montar
en uno. Si lo quiere averiguar vaya a verlo por si mismo en
el Cape May Lewes Ferry. Casi todos dicen que se enferman,
¡pero yo digo que me encanta! Puede llevarle a Nueva
Jersey en sólo 2:30 imagine eso. Incluso puede traer su
propio carro y andar a dar vueltas por Nueva Jersey.
Después tomar el último viaje de regreso a casa. Yo sentí
mariposas en mi estómago. Eso es un Wow!
Liliana está asistiendo al Programa Bilingüe de
Enriquecimiento de Verano que se ofrece en el North
Georgetown Elementary School del distrito escolar Indian
River este año. Su redacción en la que describe una
excursión en el Ferry Cape May-Lewes ha sido escogida
para su publicación en las páginas de El Tiempo Hispano.
Animamos a otros jóvenes a que nos envíen sus trabajos

Cape May Lewes Ferry

Have you ever wonder how it feels to be on a Ferry?
Most of the people dream to go on one. If you want to
find out go feel for your self on the Cape May Lewes
Ferry. Most say they get sick but I say I love it! It can
take you to New Jersey in just 2:30 imagine that. You
can even take your own car and go wonder around
in New Jersey. Then take the last trip back home. I felt
butterflies ion my stomach. That’s a Wow!
Liliana is attending the Bilingual Summer Enrichment
Program offered at North Georgetown Elementary
School in the Indian River School District this year.
Her essay describing a field trip on the Cape May
Lewes Ferry was selected for publication in the pages
of El Tiempo Hispano. We encourage other young
people to send us their work (art, essays, stories,
poems, photos, etc…) for publication in this section of
our weekly which, after all, belongs to them.

ACTIVITIES FOR KIDS
The Friends of the Woodlawn Library will host
the free Summer Reading Kick-off Party
Monday, June 18, 2007 from 5 to 8 pm at the
Woodlawn Library at 2020 West 9th Street
featuring activities for kids of all ages through
high school.
At the «Get a Clue at your Library» party,
Wilmington kids will be invited to participate
as «detectives» in activities and games with
a sleuthing theme. The Wilmington Police
and New Castle County mounted police will
do «detective activities» with the kids. There
will be «make and take» craft activities and
the Juggling Hoffmans will provide live
entertainment. Hot dogs, drinks, popcorn and
water ice will be provided free.
The summer reading program encourages
Wilmington kids to read all summer long. Kids
who sign up for the program keep track of their
reading in a summer reading log, and kids who
complete their reading goals will be recognized
at the end of the summer. There are fun and
educational programs at the library all summer
long that will bring kids to the library as well.

Los estimulantes se emplean para excitar el gusto y dar acción a los
órganos del apetito, que sin ellos todo seria insípido é insustancial. Obtienen
el primer lugar las especias que vienen de Oriente y de América; después
entran las plantas aromáticas indígenas, la sal y cuanto se conserva con
ella, los ácidos vegetales y las plantas aperitivas.
La pimienta entre las especias es la más común. Hay pimienta blanca
y negra, aunque todo sea producto de un mismo árbol; constituye su
diferencia la preparación, porque la blanca no es otra cosa que la negra
sin corteza.
El clavo de especia después de la pimienta es lo que más se usa. Se
meten en una cebolla quemada para dar color y gusto al caldo: se usa de
ellos en muchas salsas y guisados, y en todos los intermedios preparados
con legumbres, pues su perfume es bastante agradable y de un gusto
casi general; pero es necesario sacarlos antes de servir, pues su olor es
lo que agrada.
La nuez moscada también es parte de las especias
que deben hallarse en las cocinas. Se eligen de
ellas las más sanas, que se raspan en los guisados
á medida que se necesita. Está bien en todas las
salsas, y con particularidad a las coliflores y
huevos. La flor de moscada, que no es otra cosa
que su segunda corteza, se emplea pocas veces
en las salsas y guisados; por lo regular se la destina
á los intermedios de dulces, á los que da un gusto
tan fino y agradable como lo haría la misma nuez.

revancha de la final que perdió ante Brasil en la edición pasada, Perú-2004, donde cayó por penales en

El equipo argentino nuevamente volvió a mostrar su mejor cara en el segundo tiempo (al igual que
ante Estados Unidos, Paraguay y Perú), etapa en la que, liderado por un Lionel Messi sublime, logró
someter a un adversario que casi lo hace zozobrar en el primer período. El encuentro no tuvo el brillo
