This weekend gives us an opportunity to come together as a parish community to celebrate, enjoy each other’s company, and honor our patron, St. Francis of Assisi. For the past several months, our Festival Committee has been working tirelessly to make sure everything is ready for this weekend. It promises to be a wonderful event full of fun! This year, our reason to celebrate is even greater as we begin our yearlong celebration of our 75th anniversary. We began our weekend this past Friday with our “Friar Feast Taste” which was an opportunity for everyone to come together on Friday night to have a small taste of the great food our community has to offer and bid on items from the silent auction. “Friar Feast Taste” is also a good time to come meet other parishioners you might see regularly at a Sunday Mass but don’t know personally. Sunday is our big day in which we have many different activities, from the blessing of the animals, our dog show, and of course our Mega Draw!!! Sunday will also provide an opportunity to sample a great variety of food while you’re enjoying the many forms of festival entertainment, including our inflatable game zone! Whether it be Vietnamese food, Filipino food, Mexican food or some old-fashioned burgers and hot dogs, I can assure you that everything will be excellent. I would also like to take an opportunity to thank everyone who has worked so hard to make this weekend happen. From the committee members to the many volunteers who have dedicated a great numbers of hours to make our weekend a successful one, you are all appreciated!!! Without the work of so many people, none of this would be possible. Thank you all for your dedication to our community. I hope that you enjoy our festival and if you see me around, please stop and let me know how you are enjoying it. Fr. MARRIAGE MOMENTS A trip down Memory Lane #7: After your engagement you probably started the work of planning a wedding. Much of it was probably exciting and fun. Some of it may have been a burden or cause for disagreement. Reflecting on those days, what did you like best? What did you learn? Marriage: Love and Life In The Divine Plan: Domestic Violence “In some cases, divorce may be the only solution to a morally unacceptable situation. A specific example is a home where the safety of a spouse and children is at risk. As the Catholic bishops of the United States, we reiterate what we said in our pastoral message on domestic violence, When I Call for Help, namely, that no one in a marriage is obliged to maintain common living with an abusing spouse. We want to assure people who are caught in the tragedy of an abusive marriage that the Church is committed to offering them support and assistance.” To read the document go to p://www.usccb.org/loveandlife/. 27th Sunday in Ordinary Time Promoting Life, Marriage & Religious Liberty US Catholic’S Bishop Pastoral Letter of Marriage JOIN THE MOVEMENT Family Vocation Prayer Loving God, each member of our family is a special gift from you. You have given each of us gifts and talents so we may enjoy life, but also that we can share our blessings with others. Generous men and women, boys and girls, are needed for service and leadership in our church. Help us know how to encourage and support each other so we can respond courageously to this need by becoming the kind of people you would want us to be. We know that you are with us each step of the way. Help us to trust in you and in each other. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen. Parent's Prayer for their Children Loving Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, you have created my children special and unique and I give you thanks and praise for them. Help me to guide them well and to pray for them deeply. Open their hearts to your word that they may know the sound of your voice in a world filled with distractions. May they hear your call to live lives of Christian service. If you are calling my children to a life of Church ministry, my prayer is that your call will be steady and irresistible. Grant me, too, a generous heart to open my arms one day to give them to your service. Mother Mary, may your tender care keep my children safe, especially as they discern their vocations in life. Loving God, what I ask for my children, I ask for all children: help them to know your presence in their lives for you are God for ever and ever. Amen. In honor of our church’s patron saint, Francis of Assisi (11821226), in his birthday month, the following might be some items of interest that you may not know: Francis was born Giovanni di Pietro di Bernardone, but nicknamed “Francesco” ("the Frenchman") by his father. Although never ordained a priest, he is one of the most venerated religious figures in history. Francis was once a soldier but, while going off to war in 1204, had a vision that directed him back to Assisi. He lost his taste for the worldly life and while in Rome joined the poor begging at St. Peter’s Basilica. From that experience he decided to live a life of poverty. He had so many followers that he began an Order which was later authorized by Pope Innocent in 1210. In 1219, he went to Egypt in an attempt to convert the Sultan and to put an end to the Crusades. In 1223 he arranged the first Christmas Nativity scene, the crèche that is popular even today. In 1224 he received the stigmata: bleeding from the hands, feet and side of the body that emulates the wounds of Christ’s Passion; the first person recorded to have done so. In 1228, he was proclaimed a saint by Pope Gregory IX. He is known as the patron saint of animals and the environment, and is one of the two patron saints of Italy (with Catherine of Siena). A painting by Giotto, done sometime between 1295 and 1300 of the Pope’s approving the Franciscan Order. Brought to you by the 75th Anniversary Planning Committee!
