Workshop Descriptions
AAC Apps: The Pros and Cons – AAC apps have increased both the interest in AAC and the availability of AAC
systems for many who have not had access to a communication system before now. This presentation will walk the audience
through the decision-making process on determining what tool (an AAC dedicated device or an AAC app, and which one)
should be recommended. There are sound AAC evaluation principles and procedures that the Speech-Language Pathologist
will be using to match the individual with an AAC system. This presentation will go beyond the pros and cons of determining if
an AAC app should be considered. The presenter will review the pros and cons of available AAC systems so that the team can
make a well-informed decision for an AAC recommendation.
AAC Competencies…What Are They Really? – If you live or work with someone that uses augmentative and alternative communication, you may have heard or even used the term "AAC competencies" without really understanding the impact on growth
each area has in the life of the AAC user. This workshop will provide instruction in understanding, monitoring and
promoting all five competencies—operational, linguistic, social, strategic and emotional—for AAC users with various levels of
function and ability.
Acomodaciones Bajo la Sección 504 – Se enfoca en los derechos y acomodaciones individuales en la escuela, la educación
al terminar la escuela y el trabajo, y explica la diferencia entre IDEA y la Sección 504. Un ejemplo de un Plan de Acomodación
educativo y de salud bajo la sección 504 es incluido. Técnicas de comunicación son intercambiadas a través del taller.
Aplicaciones para Estudiantes con Autismo – En este taller los presentadores introducirán aplicaciones en las siguientes

Assessment Process – An overview of the importance of parent input and ways to ensure that all the child’s needs are being
considered when determining appropriate services and placement options.
AT 101 – This workshop provides information on the laws as they pertain to assistive technology, the AT evaluation process,
and some ideas for writing AT into the IEP. It also includes a brief introduction to the various types of AT available.
APPsolute Fun: Apps for Early Learning – This session will introduce and demonstrate iPad applications that help facilitate
early learning. This will include preschool apps, early language and literacy, fine motor skills and much more. Join us for a fastpaced, fun-filled workshop.
Apps for Older Students – This workshop will include apps for middle school and college aged students. We will include apps
for reading, writing, math, life skills, social skills, organization and more. Come join us for an informative, fast-paced workshop.
Apps for Students with Autism – In this workshop we will introduce applications with the following areas: video modeling, social skills, vocabulary building, language development, communication and more.
Basic Rights – An overview of the basic rights and protections under IDEA, a brief overview of Section 504 of the Rehabilitation
Act, and an explanation of record keeping and the assessment process.
Bullying Prevention – This workshop was developed by PACER’s National Bullying Prevention Center. It is intended for
parents and professionals to explore the dynamic of bullying so they can learn what to do and help children address the issue.
Topics consist of: who is bullied; why children are bullied; the role schools play; laws and policies; and bullying prevention.
Camino a la Adolescencia – Este taller ofrece a los padres información básica sobre los cambios que la pubertad y la adolescencia trae a todos los niños incluyendo a su hijo. El objetivo de esta información le enseñara a los participantes a sentirse más
cómodos y seguros para que ayuden a sus hijos a navegar con seguridad esta transición importante de la niñez a la edad
adulta. Este taller es apropiado para los padres de los estudiantes de primaria y secundaria.
Conseguir y Mantener el Primer Trabajo – Muchas familias se preguntan si su hijo/a puede o va a ser empleado. Los participantes aprenderán la importancia y auto-conciencia de la discapacidad, como las familias pueden ayudar a los jóvenes
a desarrollar un plan de carrera, y estrategias para usar un currículo, entrevistas de trabajo y adaptaciones en el trabajo.
Derechos y Estrategias sobre el IEP – Un resumen general de los derechos y protecciones bajo la ley IDEA y la Sección 504
de la Ley de Rehabilitación Vocacional.
Derechos Básicos – Un repaso general de los cuatro derechos básicos y protecciones debajo de IDEA, un breve repaso de la

Disaster Preparedness Training – An introduction to the concept of disaster preparedness for parents of children with special
health care needs, this workshop describes the need for a disaster preparedness plan and highlights

Early Intervention and Transition Services at Age 3 – This workshop provides a detailed overview of early intervention and
transition services at age three to families and professionals who serve infants and toddlers with disabilities. It also includes
information about procedural safeguards and tips and pointers for successful transition.
Fabulous Freebies: Assistive Technology at No Cost and Adaptation Ideas for Very Low Cost – In this workshop, we will
introduce some great ideas for adapting everyday items for little or no cost, demonstrate free software that can be accessed
online or downloaded to your computer, and demonstrate free iPad applications that we have found to be helpful. We will also
show you built in accessibility features on your computer and iDevices.
Getting and Keeping Your First Job – The goal of this workshop is to help families, caregivers and professionals understand
the realities of today’s work world so they can help youth with disabilities earn competitive employment. Participants will learn the
importance of disability self-awareness, career planning, and strategies to navigate resumes, job interviews and accommodation.
IEP Rights and Strategies – Covers an overview of the rights and protections under IDEA and Section 504 of the Vocational
Rehabilitation Act, the value of record keeping, the requirements of the assessment process, timelines and other legal
components of an IEP, including goals and objectives. Communication techniques are interspersed throughout the workshop.
IEP Tips and Pointers – Tried and true tips on how to positively advocate for your children, strengthen the relationships between parents and service agencies, and help create the appropriate IEP program.
Journey through Adolescence – This workshop will provide parents with basic information about the changes that puberty and
adolescence bring to every child, including their son or daughter. The information is intended to help participants feel more comfortable and confident as they help their children safely navigate a healthy lifestyles, healthy relationships and social inclusion of
youth with disabilities. This workshop is appropriate for parents of primary and middle school students.
Prevención de Bullying – Este taller fue desarrollado por el Centro Nacional de Prevención de la Intimidación de PACER. Está
dirigido a padres y profesionales para explorar las dinámicas de la intimidación y así poder aprender qué hacer y cómo ayudar a
los niños a hacer frente a esta situación.
Proceso de Evaluación – Se da una descripción de la importancia en la opinión de los padres y las maneras de asegurar que
todas las necesidades del niño sean consideradas cuando se determinan los servicios apropiados y las opciones de colocación.
Puntos y Sugerencias sobre el IEP – Se dan estrategias positivas en como abogar efectivamente por sus niños, fortalecer las
relaciones entre los padres y las agencies de servicio, y ayuda a crear el IEP apropiado.
Section 504 Accommodations – Focuses on the individual’s rights and accommodations in school, postsecondary education
and workplace. Sample Section 504 Accommodation and individual health plans are included. Positive communication techniques are interspersed throughout the workshop.
Section 504 and Transition: The Bridge from High School to Postsecondary Services – In this workshop, we will assist you
to understand the ITP process as it pertains to postsecondary education and other related services. We will also provide an
overview of programs and resources available to your child entering postsecondary education or employment.
Taller Básico de Tecnología de Asistencia (AT 101) – Este taller cubre la información sobre las leyes en lo que se refiere a la
tecnología de asistencia, el proceso de la evaluación de tecnología de asistencia, y algunas ideas para escribir la tecnología de

The ABC's of AAC-This workshop is for the person that wants to understand what augmentative and alternative communication
is by definition, scope and practice. Equipment will be used to illustrate related concepts. The assessment process and possible
outcomes will also be discussed. Whether you are a beginner or simply need to review, this workshop provides useful info.
Transición a Servicios de Adultos – Este taller se enfoca en el desarrollo del Plan de Transición Individualizado (ITP) y el
proceso de transición de la escuela a los servicios de adultos. Explica el criterio de otros sistemas y el proceso de aplicación,
i.e. la Administración del Seguro Social, Departamento de Rehabilitación, y el Centro Regional. Se discuten los apoyos para que
el individuo pueda vivir independientemente y productivamente en la comunidad. Técnicas de comunicación son intercambiadas
a través del taller.
Transition to Adult Services – This workshop focuses on the development of the Individual Transition Plan (ITP) and the transition process from school to adult services, explains other system criteria and application process, i.e. Social Security Administration, Department of Rehabilitation and Regional Center, and discusses supports for the individual to live independently and
productively within the community. Positive communication techniques are interspersed throughout the workshop.
Transitions: Moving Along with AAC – Transitions are a significant issue for AAC users. Transitions for these individuals are
both movement and change. Movement is hopefully forward, in increasing language levels, literacy levels, educational placements (early intervention to adulthood), and from simple AAC systems to complex technology. Transitions can also mean
change. Change can occur in change of symbol set chosen, in support staff or, for those with complex motor issues, how a device is accessed. This presentation will outline possible transitions that individuals may face during their lifetime as well as strategies to help make those transitions successful for all.

Project: Communicate!
Everyone has something to say. Let your voice be heard!
This project is the much-needed piece that links augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) to TASK’s TECH Center services.
The purpose of Project: Communicate! is to provide communication options
for persons with expressive language impairments through hands‐on access,
assessments, training, support and recommendations.
Thanks to a generous grant from the Disability Communications Fund, we are
thrilled to be able to provide this service to those in need.
Our Services Include:


FREE one hour consultations with our AAC Specialist.
Low cost AAC Assessments, including:




Initial intake, skills evaluation, hands-on trials, written report, funding
information, device training for user and communication team, follow-up
Communication Social Skills Group for verbal and nonverbal
communicators.
Small group training for AAC users and their support team.
AAC Workshop Series for users, parents and professionals.

AAC Apps: The Pros and Cons

AAC Apps have increased both the interest in AAC and the availability of AAC systems for many who have
not had access to a communication system before now. This presentation will walk the audience through
the decision-making process on determining what tool (an AAC dedicated device or an AAC app, and
which one) should be recommended. There are sound AAC evaluation principles and procedures that the
Speech-Language Pathologist will be using to match the individual with an AAC system. This presentation
will go beyond the pros and cons of a determining if an AAC app should be considered. The presenter will
review the pros and cons of available AAC systems so that the team can make well informed decision for
an AAC recommendation.

Transitions: Moving Along with AAC

Transitions are a significant issue for AAC users. Transitions for these individuals are both movement and
change. Movement is hopefully forward, in increasing language levels, literacy levels, educational
placements (early intervention to adulthood), and from simple AAC systems to complex technology.
Transitions can also mean change. Change can occur in change of symbol set chosen (this is a difficult
thing), in support staff or, for those with complex motor issues, how a device is accessed. Transitions, either a movement or change for those individuals who use AAC across a lifetime, requires well thought out
planning. This presentation will outline possible transitions that individuals may face during their lifetime as
well as strategies to help make those transitions successful for all.
Following each presentation Margaret will be available to answer questions as well as address key
concerns that you may have.
