THE GREAT HYMN TO LOVE
It is doubtful that Saint Paul, when he sat down
to write what we now know as the thirteenth
chapter of First Corinthians, knew that he was
penning what was to become one of the keystones
of Christian ethics. In this brief passage, he set
down ideals about love that have held fast
through the centuries. Sometimes we may think
that because these are ideals to which we aspire,
we are excused from them in our daily living.
But what Paul was writing was a letter to his
friends, providing them with some sound advice
about what it meant--and still means--to live in
love, day by day, as a follower of Christ. We find
in his words to his friends a broadening of the
great commands of Jesus to love God and neighbor. Today we hear what this love must look like
in our own actions, and how it ought to guide our
relationships with others.

Year of Mercy Pilgrimage...
The Faith Formation Office is planning a pilgrimage to Emmitsburg,
MD the National Shrine of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton with a side visit to the
National Shrine Grotto of Our Lady
of Lourdes.
Change in date of the Pilgrimage: to
help accommodate more people we
have changed the date of our Pilgrimage to Friday, April 15, thru Sunday
April 17. We will leave on Friday in
the early afternoon and return on
Sunday. Hopefully the change in
dates will allow those who work to
join us without the need to take extra
vacation days.
For the first four centuries or so, there
seems not to have been a sense of
marriage as a church institution.
Christians followed civil law, which
kept the wedding in a family setting.
Bishops wanted people to be good
citizens insofar as possible, and so
they recognized the government's role
in marriage. In general, they expected
Christians to know that marriage was
good, that marriage to other Christians was best, and to take it easy on
the wild wedding parties. They agreed
that marriage was a divine institution,
that Christ blessed it especially, and
they loved referring to the miracle at
the wedding feast of Cana. Still, even
when Christianity became the official
religion of the empire in 380, marriage remained a family matter.
On wedding days people gathered in
the bride's house, where the father
would "give her hand" to her husband, draping a garland of flowers
over the couple. There were no official words to say, there was no blessing to be given. Everyone walked in
procession to the bride's new home
for the concluding rites and the feast.
In the Eastern Empire, it soon became customary to invite a priest or
bishop to give a blessing at the meal
or the day before. It was a nice thing
to do, completely optional, but had a
"photo-op" feel to it that was widely
emulated. Before long, at least in the
East, it looked as if the priest were
joining the couple in marriage and
blessing the union.

Agenda of Planned Parenthood
I refer to the letter which professed
that Planned Parenthood has "no personal agenda." The response to this
allegation is simple: the facts do not
lie.
Planned Parenthood, the great champion of "choice", aborts approximately 5,000 American babies every week.
That figure (which incidentally is
Planned Parenthood's own number) is
considerably more than the 3,000
Americans that died in the terrorist
attack on September 11.
Planned Parenthood is the fourth
leading cause of death in the U.S. -behind non-Planned Parenthood abortions (19,700 a week), heart disease
(12,500 a week) and cancer (10,500 a
week).
Planned Parenthood is a billion dollar
business and makes tens of millions of
dollars of profit each year. It claims to
want to make abortion "rare," a most
peculiar description given the current
death toll. Indeed, this is similar to the
tobacco companies claiming that they
do not want people to smoke. Follow
the money. Does anyone really believe them?
Whatever Planned Parenthood
claims, there is but one tragic response: 5,000 a week.

Jubilee Year of Mercy
January 31, 2016
Fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time
Rave reviews greeted Jesus' first
hometown homily proclaiming a
year of God's mercy, but the mood
turned violent when he went on to
declare that God's mercy embraces
outsiders; it rejects distinctions between citizen and foreigner, acceptable and unworthy, even sinner and
saint. Far from being anyone's personal possession, God's kingdom is
open to everyone, God's love unconditional, God's mercy boundless. By
this Jubilee Year of Mercy, Pope
Francis repeats Jesus' challenge in
today's Gospel to broaden our horizons until our vision matches Jesus'
vision of every sinner as a potential
saint, and each suffering stranger as
our neighbor. Jesus, says Pope Francis, continually went beyond the law,
keeping company with public sinners
and even sharing meals with them to
demonstrate that God's mercy is "the
beating heart of the Gospel" (Misericordiae Vultus, 12). To
be truly Jesus' disciples, such unconditional love and boundless mercy
must also be at the center of all we
say and do.

TRADICIONES DE NUESTRA
FE
