Picture Day Retakes
Life Touch will be at Cherokee again for school picture retakes on Wednesday, October 22, 2014. Students who would
like to order a different picture packet, missed the previous picture day or enrolled after September 17, need to get their
pictures taken. The pictures will be used: (1) for the student’s school picture (purchasing a package is optional), and (2)
for the yearbook. Order forms, which contain prices, and the picture and package options, are available in the Cherokee
Main Office. Please have your child come prepared with payment and an order form. There is no charge for
retakes, however, the student needs to bring the previous packet in with him/her at the time the new picture
is taken.

Parent Volunteers Needed for Picture Retake Day
Cherokee is looking for parent volunteers to help with photos at Cherokee on Wednesday, October 22 from 8:00 - 2:00

Safe Arrival Plan
Excused Absences/Appointments and Leaving Early
SAFE ARRIVAL 204-1247
We have a safe arrival plan for Cherokee Middle School children en route to school. In order for this plan to be
effective, please call the school to let us know if your child will be tardy or absent from school on a given day. If
you could call before 7:45 a.m. each morning, it would be appreciated.
If your child needs to leave early during the school day due to a planned absence or a medical/dental
appointment, please send a written note with your child excusing them from school. They should bring the note to
the office first thing in the morning allowing office staff time to issue a pass. This will allow your child to leave
class and the building at the time designated and then it is not necessary to sign them out in the office. If this is
not done, a verbal permission will be needed in the office.
If you know your child will be missing school for an illness or medical/dental appointment, it is not necessary to
wait until the morning of the absence to call. You may leave a message any time at 204-1247. Please make
sure that we have your correct home telephone and work telephone numbers as we will
make two attempts to call every parent whose child is absent if the parent has not called
school by 9:00 a.m. on the day of absence.

MATTHEW BELZ

Hello my name is Matt Belz and I am excited to be back teaching 7 grade. This year I will be teaching 7 grade Reading
and Language Arts. I am a graduate of the University of Wisconsin-Madison with my degree in Elementary and Middle
School Education. I am originally from Fort Atkinson, Wisconsin where I was a three sport athlete in high school. I love
sports and being active, so when I am not at school you can possibly see me with friends playing sports or running
through the neighborhood. I am extremely excited to get to know all of you and have a great school year at Cherokee
Heights Middle School.
MARGARET CORBAE
This is my third year in Madison. On my way here I stopped in Austin, TX; Pittsburgh, PA; and Iowa City, IA. But my kids
will tell you I am "Southern" since I was born and raised in Eutaw, AL. That being said, I love the Crimson Tide, fried food
and going barefoot. I have 3 children, 2 girls and a boy. The youngest attends West High School. The older two explain
my white hair color. My husband, an old dog named Tess, and a cat named Chuy complete my household.
I have been a school nurse for 12 years. I worked at Mendota and Lindbergh Elementary before coming to Cherokee. I
am thrilled to be here and am excited by the positive energy I've felt from all the staff. I look forward to working with
Cherokee students and their families to create a healthy Cougar community.
When I'm not in the health office I can be found cheering for the West High School cross country teams, coaching Girls on
the Run at Leopold, enjoying the wonderful hike/bike trails that Madison has to offer and cooking/eating. My family's
favorite place to spend time together is around the table.
TOM GIDDINGS
Hello! My name is Tom Giddings and I am a Cross Categorical teacher at Cherokee Heights Middle School on the 7th
Grade team. This is my first year in the Madison Metropolitan School District, and my 7th year teaching. Education is my
third career, having spent seven years in the Navy, and ten years working for Kraft Foods / Oscar Mayer.
When I'm not at school I'm spending time with my family. I have two elementary school aged children, and two that are
currently in college. I live on Madison's east side and enjoy gardening, planting flowers, grilling out, and music. I've
attended the University of Minnesota, the University of Rhode Island, and Edgewood College. I do not particularly enjoy
winter, but I do like Madison.

RICHARD HAMEL
Hello, I am Richard Hamel and I am the Advanced Learning (AL) Instructional Resource Teacher at Cherokee Middle
School. This is my fourth year in the AL (formerly TAG) Department, though I have been teaching for over twenty years in
the Madison School District. I also taught at international schools in Thailand and Tanzania, and in the summer I run a
Shakespeare camp for elementary and middle school students. My wife, also a teacher in Madison, and I have three
grown sons and one adorable granddaughter. In my spare time, I love to travel, read and pretend to play the banjo. I look
forward to collaborating with students, parents and teachers at Cherokee Middle School.
LUKE HROVAT-STAEDTER
My name is Luke Hrovat-Staedter and I am the new choir teacher at Cherokee! Although I am new to the teaching
profession, I am no stranger to the Madison Area. I was born and raised on the near west side, attending Midvale and
Lincoln Elementary schools, Hamilton Middle School, and West High School. In May, I graduated from the UW-Madison
with a degree in Choral and General Music Education. I have performed and taught music all over the Madison area
during the course of my young career. I was the Music Director for West High School’s spring production of “Beauty and
the Beast”, leading both the singers and instrumentalists. For the past three years, I was a member of the UW
MadHatters, an all-male a cappella group on campus, spending 1.5 years as the music director. Highlights include
performing for a sold out audiences at the Overture Center and traveling to The White House to perform for the President
and the First Lady… TWICE!

JANE KENYON
Hello Cherokee! I come from a family of Badgers, and graduated from UW in 1993, with a BS in Education and
Psychology. In my twenty years of being an educator, I have had the opportunity to teach in eight different school districts
both in Wisconsin and Florida While I have taught grades K-9, sixth grade is my favorite. I earned my Master's Degree
from Edgewood College in 2011. My two daughters, Megan (15) and Rebekah (13), my Golden Retriever, Cooper, and I
joined my husband, Allen, and his three sons Alec (24), Justyn (22), and Darien (19), and we became the Kenyon bunch!
When not at school, I love to read, camp, and kayak. I also work during the summer with children who have
developmental disabilities and autism spectrum disorders as a Solisten Sound Therapist. I am so thrilled to be a part of
this amazing Cherokee staff and to be back working with middle school students. I am expecting great things this year!
JENNIFER KURTZ
Welcome to the 2014-2015 school year! My name is Jennifer Kurtz and I am the newest addition to the Cherokee staff. I
am teaching 8th grade reading and language arts. I came from the Monona Grove School District where I taught for 20
years! As a recent empty-nester, my husband and I keep busy with our pets, boating, biking, snowmobiling and long
walks. I am looking forward to working with the Cherokee students and staff to make this the best school year possible!
AUGUSTIN NDAHAYO
I am so excited to join the Cherokee Heights Middle School community as the new Mathematics/Algebra Honors teacher.
I have taught in Summer School at Memorial High School (Algebra 1). I also taught as a student teacher at Harbor Middle
School (Math), Hamilton Middle School (Applied Technology), and East High School (Business). In addition to that I
taught in high school in Senegal (Algebra-Calculus) and in Rwanda, I taught middle school mathematics and science.
Furthermore, I possess a Master’s in Business Administration, from Cardinal Stritch University, Milwaukee-Wisconsin, a
Master’s in Architecture from Blida University, Algeria and a diploma in Mathematics-Physics from Saint Andre College,
Kigali-Rwanda. I also have a Teaching Certificate- Math, Technology and Business Education from NORDA Programs
Education. Moreover, I know different languages including English, French and Kinyarwanda. I am interested in sports
such as soccer, basketball and track and field.
KRISTINA OLAFSSON
I am so excited to be working at Cherokee this year! I student taught here during the fall of 2013 through the University of
Wisconsin- Madison. I graduated this summer with a cross categorical special education major. I am so happy to come
back to the Cherokee community for my first year out in the real world of teaching. I have lived in the Madison area since
elementary school and loved growing up and going to college here. I enjoy attending UW sports, specifically hockey and
football. I also love cooking, when somebody else does the dishes!
DYAMOND OVERSTREET
My name is Dyamond Overstreet. The kids call me Miss. O. I am working at Cherokee Heights middle school as a SEA.
So far I have felt very welcomed by caring students and staff. Within the first couple days I was smiling the whole time.
The atmosphere of the building seems to positivity affect the students and staff. I am a college student studying
mathematics. The only reason I am studying mathematics instead of social work or another career involving children
is because it seems to be the most logical career path for me. Children are my essence to a positive life in our future. I've
worked at a couple different schools within the Madison School district. I have worked with children over the last five
years and have taken many classes that support student development. I enjoy working with children. I view work as play.

EMILY PELLEGRINI
Hi all! My name is Emily Pellegrini and I am Cherokee's PASS Americorps member for the 2014-2015 school year. This
year I am excited to continue building our Project Unify and TEAM programs! I'm brand new to Wisconsin, having grown
up in Portland, Oregon and graduated from the University of Oregon this past June. In my spare time I enjoy running,
doing jigsaw puzzles, and of course watching Ducks football!
PATRICIA PFANN
Hello! I am Patricia Pfann and I am the new 8th grade reading and Social Studies teacher. I like to be called Pat and my
last name is pronounced fawn. I am very happy to be joining your team. I was previously employed by the Rio
Community School District where I created and taught the Middle School RTI program that focused on reading. I am
training to run my first half marathon, I like to cook and read. I have two children, one who is a freshman in college and
one who is a sophomore in high school.
VELETTE REYNOLDS
Hello Cherokee Family, my name is Velette Reynolds, and I am your new Director of Security. I am excited to have the
opportunity to meet my new Cherokee family. Some of you may recognize my face; I am a former Cherokee student. I
have a Bachelor’s Degree in Sociology with an emphasis in Criminal Justice from the University of Wisconsin Whitewater.
I started my graduate degree at Minnesota State University of Mankato, and will be completing my master’s degree in
Social Work at the University of Wisconsin Madison. Throughout my educational career I was given the opportunity to
participate in service learning. I studied abroad in Jamaica, West Africa, Brazil and Italy. My travels have helped shape
who I am today and affected my outlook on education in our district.
Prior to joining the district I worked at a local group home which is why I am so passionate about helping our young men
and women in Madison. I have worked for the district for three years now. I will be working closely with Cherokee’s
Student Services Intervention Team (SSIT). Moreover, I am a valuable resource for everyone in the building; please feel
free to ask me for anything pertaining to the betterment of our Cherokee students.
Outside of Cherokee I enjoy crafting abstract nail designs, refinishing old furniture, and working with the elderly. I do not
have any children of my own, but I love spending time with loved ones, especially my small puppy (Bichon Poodle mix
named Boo-Boo). As you see me out and about in the halls, please do not hesitate to say Hello! I am looking forward to
getting to know each and every one of you.
JOANNE SATHER

Hello! My name is Joanne Sather and I will be the AVID Coordinator, 7 grade AVID teacher and Reading Teacher this
year while Justine Hollander is on leave. I have been a substitute teacher with the Madison Metropolitan School District
for two years and am happy to make Cherokee Heights Middle School my home for the 2014-15 school year. I attended
the University of Wisconsin Parkside where I graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Sociology and a minor in Psychology. I
received my Teaching Certification in Grades 1-8 from Concordia University Wisconsin in 2011. Outside of school, I enjoy
spending time with my big Greek family, reading good books and cooking. I am beyond thrilled that I am here to work with
the students and staff at Cherokee Heights Middle School this year. I look forward to growing as an educator and learner
with all of you!
KIM STALKER-HERRON
After being the long term substitute social worker at Cherokee last spring, I am thrilled to be the full time school social
worker for Cherokee! I have a background in mental health, crisis intervention, hospice & grief, and home-based family
counseling. I am from southern Indiana, but consider myself a Madisonian after living here for almost 20 years! I live with
my husband, two middle school-aged daughters (!), two cats, one hamster, multiple fish, and one adorable puppy! I love
to drive my daughters to all of their activities in my free time. I look forward to meeting you and having a very positive
school year!

HONG TRAN
I am excited to serve as your new assistant principal! I started my career in education as a math and science teacher in
Oakland, California. Since 2005, I've worked in the Madison area as a special education assistant, instructional resource
teacher, at-risk teacher and coordinator for AVID and talented and gifted students. I most recently served as Cherokee's
positive behavior support coach and dean of students. When I'm not thinking about school, you can find me walking my
two dogs, Chomps and Baxter, near the school or playing tennis at the Odana courts. I look forward to meeting you all in

ERIKA EVELYN WALKER
Hola Everyone! I’m Erika Evelyn Walker (like to be called Evelyn) and I am the new Bilingual Resource Specialist for
Cherokee Heights. I am very happy to join your team and hope that you can see me as someone that you can trust. I
have been a BRS for almost six years and I have a background in Mathematics and Education. This year I will be working
for Van Hise Elementary, Hamilton and Cherokee Middle Schools. I am originally from Mexico City and I moved to
Madison when I was 17 years old. I have two dogs (a white German shepherd and a gray weimaraner). I do not have
any children but my house is always full of kids because I have a lot of younger siblings. I love to cook and trying new
kinds of food. I really enjoy painting, traveling, and watching movies. People describe me as someone with a very bubbly
personality and yes, I am a hugger.

RICHARD HAMEL

LUKE HROVAT-STAEDTER

JANE KENYON
Hola Cherokee! Yo soy parte de una familia fanática a los Badgers, y me gradué de la UW en 1993, con una Carrera en

JENNIFER KURTZ
Bienvenidos al año escolar 2014-2015! Mi nombre es Jennifer Kurtz y soy una de las nuevas adiciones al personal de
Cherokee. Yo estoy ensenando el 8vo grado en el área de lectura y de lenguaje de artes. Yo vengo del Distrito Escolar
de Monona Grove donde yo ensene por 20 años! Recientemente mis hijos se fueron a la universidad, y mi esposo y yo
nos ocupamos con nuestras mascotas, ir a remar, andar en bicicletas, andar en una motocicleta de nieve, y caminar. Yo

AUGUSTIN NDAHAYO
Yo estoy muy emocionado de ser parte de la Escuela Secundaria Cherokee Heights como el nuevo maestro de la clase
de Honores de Matemáticas/Algebra. Yo estuve ensenando (Algebra 1) en la Escuela Memorial High durante la Escuela
de Verano. Yo también estuve trabajando como estudiante maestro en la Escuela Secundaria Harbor (Matemáticas),

Matemáticas, Tecnología y Educación en Negocios del Programa de Educación de NORDA. Mas aparte, yo hablo las
lenguas de Ingles, Francés y Kinyarwanda. Yo estoy interesado en deportes como soccer, basquetbol y correr.

¡Yo estoy muy emocionada de trabajar en Cherokee este año! Yo trabaje como estudiante maestra aquí durante el otoño

anteriormente estuve trabajando con el Distrito Escolar Comunitario de Rio donde yo cree y ensene el programa RTI en
la Escuela Secundaria, este programa se enfoca en la lectura. Yo estoy entrenando para correr mi primer maratón,
también me gusta cocinar y leer. Yo tengo dos hijos, uno que acaba de empezar la universidad y otro que está en el

VELETTE REYNOLDS
Hola Familia Cherokee, mi nombre es Velette Reynolds, y yo soy la nueva Directora de Seguridad. Yo estoy muy
emocionada en tener la oportunidad de conocer a mi nueva familia de Cherokee. Algunos de ustedes me reconocerán
ya que son una ex-estudiante de Cherokee. Yo tengo una Carrera de Bachillerato en Sociología con un énfasis en
Justicia Criminal de la Universidad de Wisconsin Whitewater. Yo empecé mi carrera de maestría en la Universidad del
Estado de Mankato, Minnesota, y estaré completando mi maestría en la Universidad de Wisconsin Madison. Durante mi
carrera educacional, me han dado la oportunidad de participar en el aprendizaje de servicio. Yo estudie en Jamaica,
Sureste de África, Italia y Brasil. Mis viajes me han ayudado a ser la persona que soy el día de hoy y han afectado mi
vista sobre la educación en nuestro distrito.
Antes de ser parte del distrito, yo trabaje en una casa hogar local por lo cual yo tengo una gran pasión de ayudar a los

¡Hola! Mi nombre es Joanne Sather y yo soy la coordinadora del programa AVID, la maestra del Lectura y la maestra

Hola a Todos! Mi nombre es Erika Evelyn Walker (y me gusta que me llamen Evelyn) y yo soy la nueva Especialista de
Recursos Bilingües para Cherokee Heights. Yo estoy muy contenta en poder ser parte de este grupo y espero que
ustedes me vean como alguien con que ustedes pueden confiar. Yo he trabajado como BRS por casi seis años y tengo

From the Health Office
Heather Poster and Margaret Corbae are the Health office team that take care of your children. If your child
has specific health issues you would like to discuss, please call Margaret Corbae, RN, the school nurse at
204-1263.
IMMUNIZATIONS: If your child received any shots since the end of the last school year, please call the health
office at 204-1262 and give us the dates. This information is not automatically sent from to us from your child’s
clinic, although we can look up the Wisconsin Immunization Registry online if your child’s shots have been
entered by the clinic. All children need to be up-to-date by the end of October.
BREAKFAST:
Did you know that a good breakfast is needed to provide us with the energy we need to learn
and do our work? Many students have been skipping breakfast which results in stomach pains, headaches,
tiredness and time missed from the classroom! Please, encourage your child to EAT BREAKFAST! The
school cafeteria opens at 7 AM.
What is a good breakfast? Fruit or juice; toast, cereal or bagel; and milk, yogurt or cheese. Eggs are
also a good source of protein.
What is a bad breakfast? Pop or soda or sweetened drinks, coffee; sweet foods such as candy,
cake, doughnuts; and chips or red hots.
Ask your child what they had to eat for breakfast today!
FOOD ALLERGY INFORMATION
We have several children in school with severe, life-threatening allergies to peanuts and other nuts, bananas
and soy. Exposure to these foods can cause a severe reaction and could result in serious illness or death.
Please, if you send snacks for the classroom, DO NOT USE PEANUTS/PEANUT OIL OR ANY NUTS.
Ingredients must be listed on all food products: refer to the MMSD Wellness Policy Suggested Snack List in
www.madison.k12.wi.us under Parent/Guardian Information, then click Student Health and Well-Being and
then go to the Wellness Policy.
IS YOUR CHILD WELL ENOUGH FOR SCHOOL?
It is not always easy to decide if your child is sick enough to stay home. Children who come to school are
expected, with few exceptions, to participate fully in school activities. Here are some guidelines that might help
in a parent’s decision-making:
1. Fever: A fever of 100 degrees or more signals an illness that is probably going to make a student
uncomfortable and unable to function well in class. Your child should stay home until her/she is feeling better.
Your child should be fever-free for 24 hours without using Tylenol or Advil/ibuprofen before returning
to school.
2. Vomiting, Diarrhea or Severe Nausea: These are symptoms that require a student to remain at home
until a normal diet is tolerated the night before and the morning of school.
3. Infectious Diseases: Diseases such as impetigo, pink eye with thick drainage and strep throat require a
doctor’s examination and prescription for medication. Contacting the doctor and using the medicine as
directed for the full recommended length of time are necessary. Once medication has been started and the
child is feeling well, he/she may return to school.
4. Injury: If your child has an injury that causes continuous discomfort, the student should not attend school
until the problem is checked by a doctor or it improves. Injuries that interfere with class participation need a
medical evaluation. If participation in physical education classes is not recommended, a doctor’s
excuse is required.

¿Está su hijo bien de salud para ir a la escuela?
No es siempre fácil decidir si su hijo está lo suficientemente mal de salud para ir a la escuela o si se debe quedar
en casa. Se espera que los niños que vienen a la escuela, con pocas excepciones, deben poder participar

Do you have fabric, thread, quilt batting or stuffing you would like to pass on to a good cause?

Wellness would be glad to take it off your hands for our quilting project in 7 grade. The quilts will be sold during back to
school night. The money we make from selling the quilts funds our foods labs. After the 7th graders learn to use the
sewing machines and make a quilt for the sale, those students are welcome to stay after school and make their own 4’x4’
quilt, but they need to commit to finishing it!
Also, if you are interested in helping out with the sewing labs we will be starting October 13 and continuing ‘til the end of

Cherokee Middle School is continuing to create a school-wide system for all students to be “school-ready.” Although
teachers still have the prerogative to ask students to purchase a 3-ring binder or other supplies for their specific class,
many teachers in all three grades are using the one binder approach: one-binder with subject dividers labeled for each

Saturday College Club Fall 7th & 8th Grade (Winter 6th Grade)
College Club is a college readiness program designed to prepare middle school students for high school and college
success.
As a College Club Student you will:
challenge ourselves & work hard.
Prepare for high school and college success.
Maintain GPA of 2.0 or raise GPA to goal level.
Participate in college opportunities through visits & speakers.
Boost student engagement and participation during & after school.
If this sounds like your student, you are invited to apply to Saturday College Club! College Club is a college readiness
program designed to prepare middle school students for high school and college success. Certified teachers and
education staff provide small group learning opportunities tied with Cherokee’s curriculum and AVID college preparatory
standards. Our vision is that participants will be inspired, prepared, and connected to resources so they can attain a
quality education that will allow them to realize their full potential. Education and Enrichment sessions are provided to
guide your student through the transitions of middle school and prepare them for high school and college
Hosted at the Allied Boys & Girls Club, Saturday College Club Fall Semester begins October 4, 2014. College Club
meets from 8:30am to 1:00pm Saturday morning, with meals provided. This free College Club program is geared towards

those 7 & 8 grade students who have an interest in improving their academic performance. We will have opportunities

Welcome back Cherokee Heights students and families. Our new Cherokee PTO board is excited to dig in this
school year and offer some great opportunities for family engagement, staff support and fun activities.

This year we’ve decided to set up our PTO board to be composed of four parents without specific titles or

Of course, the PTO can always use additional support. If your child has or would enjoy our Ultrazone Laser
Tag events, you might consider coordinating those. Restaurant Nights are a fun and social way to make some
extra money for Cherokee. If you like to organize these types of events, we would welcome that. We would
like to put more emphasis on “no cost” fundraisers this year. If you can help coordinate box top collection and a
possible competition between classes, we could use you. Please contact Kris Aman

On that note, be sure to snip and save BoxTops for Education labels. You can send them in with your student
at any time, and there will be a convenient drop off location set up during Back To School Night on October 1st.
We are looking into some contests this year to help encourage kids to bring them in. Add your student’s grade

Target RedCard
If you have a Target RedCard credit or debit card, please be sure to designate Cherokee as your recipient and
we will get 1% of all cardholder purchases back to Cherokee! This is an easy way for Cherokee to get
additional funds without doing extra work or buying anything additional.
School Dances
The first Cherokee Dance of the year will be on Friday, October 24, from 1:00 – 2:30 p.m. Admission to the
event is $2.00 and tickets will be sold at lunch on the day of the dance. Pizza, beverages and other snacks will
be available for purchase in the cafeteria during the celebration. There will be a shortened schedule on that
day so the fun can begin early. Regular bus transportation is scheduled after the dance. Volunteers are
needed to help with set-up, selling wristbands, selling food and drinks, and clean-up. Volunteers are also
needed to sell wristbands during lunchtime. If you would like to be added to the sign up genius email list for
potential volunteers, please contact Julia Peterson at [email protected].
Future dances for the 2014-15 school year will be December 5, 2014 and March 20, 2015.
PTO Donations
Every year the Cherokee PTO provides important financial support to our school. Examples of this support
has included:
● Grants to facilitate creative learning opportunities in classrooms.
● Funds to help teachers supply their classrooms.
● Funds to subsidize enrichment and social programs such as the school directory, Math Fest and the 8th
grade celebration.
Some families prefer to bypass participation in Cherokee PTO fundraisers and simply choose to make a
generous donation. Please use the form below if you would like to contribute to reach our goals and support

REAP Food Group is proud to provide this holiday fundraiser that not only raises money for your school, but
also benefits small Wisconsin farms and businesses. REAP’s fundraiser features a variety of high-quality,
locally- and sustainably- produced items. These items are great for your personal use or to share with others
as reasonably-priced gifts. Who wouldn’t appreciate a gift of delicious Wisconsin maple syrup, or chocolate
covered dried cherries, or beautifully hand-crafted goat-milk soap? Think about putting several items together
for a gift box that’s sure to please.
On average schools will keep between 30-40% of the total dollar amount of your order (depending on which
products you order) with the rest benefiting local farms and businesses. This is definitely a fundraiser you can
feel good about participating in!
There is room for up to fifteen orders on each form. So share this with your friends, neighbors and work

AVID Middle School and High School Tutor Position
Description: AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) is a college readiness elective course offered at
MMSD middle and high schools. AVID Tutors facilitate collaborative, small group, student-led study groups, evaluate
the quality of student thinking by grading student work and foster student’s critical thinking skills through modeling
strong inquiry skills. This work is done in the AVID college readiness elective course middle school and high school
buildings across the district. Tutors may also perform other related duties as assigned by the AVID elective teacher,
coordinator, or support staff.
Work Schedule: Tuesdays and Thursdays or Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays during the academic school day, as
well as additional AVID site team meetings and trainings scheduled throughout the year. Tutors are required to work the
same shift on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Tutors will be placed based on tutor availability, academic strengths, and
Madison Metropolitan High School and Middle School needs. Position begins with training in late August – early
September. Tutors are generally scheduled for 8-10 hours of work per week.
Required Qualifications: Currently enrolled in a post-secondary institution or have received at least a bachelor’s
degree. Strong communication skills, a proven track record in punctuality and reliable attendance.
