In our church today we are faced with the daunting duty of engaging
our children and teens in actively learning about and living their
catholic faith in their daily life. This duty can be very challenging in
light of the choices readily available to our children and us! These
choices confront our children and teens daily via the internet, the multitude of technology available to them 24/7 and through their friends. I
have been told by some of our parents and catechists that the youth in
our church are wooed and recruited to visit other teen programs that are
also held weekly by other area faiths (Methodists, Presbyterians,
non-denominational Christian churches, etc.) in very tempting and
inviting atmospheres with weekly music jams, lively socialization; and
professionally hired speakers and musicians in large open atmospheres,
some complete with stages and lounge settings!
Well, we do not have a large open atmosphere or a stage or lounge
seating and we certainly do not have the money to hire professional
speakers and musicians, however, we have a wonderful group of
catechists and parent volunteers who take their roles as disciples of
teaching God’s word to our children very seriously. We invite our teens
to our weekly Sunday night gatherings held in our parish hall for faith
learning and fellowship! Their night begins every week after joining
together at the 5:00 p.m. Mass with dinner donated, provided and
cooked by our parent volunteers! Our Teen Youth Director, Jena
Lanham, has also involved our children in learning their faith not only
at our weekly teen gatherings, but also through involving them in weekend retreats; annual Son Fest trips to join together with youth from
other parishes and worship and praise God in a vacation-like setting;
Habitat For Humanity projects; feeding the poor of Atlanta through
visits to Soup Kitchens and the Stack-a-Sack Sandwich Ministry and by
raising their awareness of the needs of people in our area and beyond
who are less fortunate and need our help through mission work.
A lot of these teaching opportunities require raising money to help out
our teens whose families cannot afford to commit family funds to allow
their children to attend these faith learning events. Our teens have
worked tirelessly and dedicated many hours of their precious time to
raising these funds, not always to raise money for themselves, but also
to help out their church friends who would otherwise not be able to go.
We have all helped out by purchasing many of their baked goods,
t-shirts, hoodies, and also by attending the annual Teen Barbeque; the
pancake breakfasts; and the past silent auction dinners. We have
several parishioners who have generously donated items and services
that our teens have been able to auction off to raise funds for their faith
learning programs. We also have area restaurant owners who have
donated food and drinks for some of these functions. In addition, this
past year as a parish, we dedicated two parking spots in the church
parking lot as ‘Reserved’ for each of our weekend masses along with
dedicating one full pew at our most widely attended Christmas
Children’s Mass; Christmas Midnight Mass and the Easter Vigil Mass!
These parking spaces and pews were sold at auction for the year 20092010 at the teen’s silent auction dinner and raised a lot of money for
their program that they otherwise would not have had and it did not
cost our church a penny! This fundraising idea is used across the
country at many churches to raise money and is open to all our parish
members to bid on! Our teens will be auctioning off these ‘Reserved’
parking spots and special Mass pews for the year 2010-2011 sometime
in May so watch the bulletin for future details.
We need to be aware of how our teens are being tempted and recruited
by technology and by their friends and consciously work to teach them
about the comfort and community our catholic faith provides through
the example we set by the way we each live our life and involve ourselves
in our church community!

PENSAMIENTOS Y MEDITACIONES
En la iglesia de hoy nos encontramos enfrentados con una gran responsabilidad de incluir nuestros niños y adolescentes para que aprendan y vivan activamente su fe católica en la vida diaria. Esta responsabilidad puede ser muy
desafiante considerando la multitud de opciones presentes para nuestros
niños y para todos nosotros. Estas opciones desafían nuestros niños y adolescentes diariamente a través del internet y demás tecnología dispuesta para
ellos todo el tiempo y a través de sus amigos. Me han contado algunos padres
y catequistas que los jóvenes de nuestra iglesia están siendo reclutados para
visitar otros programas que también son realizados semanalmente en otras
Iglesias de nuestra localidad (Metodistas, Presbiterianos, etc.) en un clima
muy tentador y acogedor, con una agradable socialización, con conferencistas
y músicos profesionales contratados para entretenerlos en áreas amplias y
escenarios para este tipo de ocasiones.
Bien, nosotros no tenemos áreas amplias, ni grandes salones y ciertamente
no tenemos el dinero para contratar conferencistas profesionales, ni músicos.
Sin embargo, nosotros tenemos un grupo maravilloso de catequistas y padres
voluntarios, quienes han tomado, muy seriamente, esta responsabilidad de
discípulos para la enseñanza de la palabra de Dios a nuestros niños y jóvenes.
Yo invito a nuestros jóvenes a nuestra noche de reunión dominical semanal
que tenemos en nuestro salón social para compartir y aprender nuestra fe. Su
noche comienza con una cena donada y cocinada por los padres voluntarios
de este programa cada semana después de participar en la misa de las
5:00pm. Nuestra directora del programa de adolescentes y jóvenes, Jena
Lanham, ha envuelto a nuestros niños en el aprendizaje de la fe, no solo a
través de estas reuniones semanales, sino también a través de retiros de fin de
semana, el paseo anual de “Sonfest” en el que nuestros adolescentes conocen
jóvenes de otras parroquias y alaban a Dios durante sus vacaciones. Jena
También envuelve a nuestros jóvenes en los proyectos de Hábitat for humanity, en la alimentación de los pobres de Atlanta con visitas a bancos de comida
y participando en el ministerio de la bolsa con Sandwich y a talvez de crear
consciencia de las necesidades de la gente menos afortunada que necesitan de
nuestra ayuda y de nuestro trabajo.
Muchas de estas oportunidades de aprendizaje requieren recoger dinero
para ayudar a nuestros adolescentes a quienes sus familias no pueden ayudar
con los fondos para participar en estos eventos. Nuestros adolescentes han
trabajado incansablemente y han dedicado muchas horas de su precioso tiempo para recoger estos fondos, no siempre para recoger dinero para ellos mismos, pero también para ayudar a sus amigos de la iglesia, quienes de otra
manera no podrían participar. Todos hemos ayudado al comprar sus productos horneados, sus camisetas, etc. Y también al atender al barbeque anual de
los adolescentes, los desayunos con pancakes, y las pasadas cenas con subastas. Hemos tenido varios parroquianos que generosamente donaron artículos
y servicios que nuestros adolescentes subastaron para recoger fondos para sus
programas de aprendizaje de la fe. Nosotros también tenemos dueños de
restaurantes locales, quienes han donado comida y bebidas para algunos de
estas actividades. Además, el ano pasado, nuestra parroquia dedico dos espacios de nuestro parqueadero para ser “Reservados” para cada una de nuestras
misas de fin de semana, junto con la dedicación de una banca completa para
nuestras misas mas concurridas, como la Misa de navidad para los niños, la
misa de navidad a la media noche y la misa de la vigilia pascual. Estas bancas
y espacios de parqueo fueron vendidos en la subasta del 2009-2010 en la cena
con subasta de los adolescentes y así ellos levantaron buen dinero para sus
programas, que de otra manera no hubieran podido tener y esto no le costo un
solo centavo a la iglesia. Esta idea de la subasta es usada a través de todo el
país en muchas Iglesias para recoger dinero. La subasta esta abierta para todos los miembros de nuestra parroquia para que hagan sus ofertas. Nuestros
adolescentes subastaran estos parqueaderos “Reservados” y las bancas especiales para el ano 2010-2011, en el mes de Mayo. A si que estén pendientes de
la información en el boletín.
Necesitamos ser conscientes de que nuestros adolescentes son tentados y
reclutados por la tecnología y por sus amigos. Necesitamos trabajar para enseñarles la bondad que nuestra comunidad de fe católica provee a talvez del
ejemplo que les demás, por la forma en que vivimos nuestras vidas y en q ue
nos envolvemos con nuestra comunidad parroquial.
Yo aprecio mucho el apoyo que todos ustedes dan a nuestros programas de
enseñanza de la fe y a sus esfuerzos para recolectar sus fondos.

All parishioners are welcome to participate in the process.
What is Longing for the Holy?

Longing for the Holy: Spirituality for Everyday Life is a twelve session process of spiritual and pastoral renewal and is a faith sharing
companion to Fr. Ronald Rolheiser’s classic The Holy Longing.
How will Longing for the Holy: Spirituality for Everyday Life help our parishioners?
Longing for the Holy enables people to:

Develop a closer relationship with Christ
•
Grow in community
•
Name the Essentials fo our spirituality and integrate them more into our lives

The Council of Catholic Women (CCW) of St. Theresa thanks all the parishioners who generously supported our annual Christmas raffle and made it a big success. We would also like to thank all the ladies who helped sell tickets each weekend. A generous donation was given to the Good Samaritan Center.
