Lent Brings Us to the Cross
“Where can the weak find a place of firm security and peace, except in the wounds of the Savior? Indeed the more secure is my place there the
more he can do to help me. The world rages, the
flesh is heavy, and the devil lays his snares, but I
do not fall, for my feet are planted on firm rock.
I may have sinned gravely. “My conscience
would be distressed, but it would not be in turmoil, for I would
recall the wounds of the Lord: ‘he was wounded for our iniquities.’ What sin is there so deadly that it cannot be pardoned by
the death of Christ? And so if I bear in mind this strong, effective remedy, I can never again be terrified by the malignancy of

Lent Brings Us to the Light of Christ
“‘The Lord is my light and my salvation;
whom shall I fear?’. . . Souls brightened by
this light do not fall into sin or stumble on
vice.”
“The spiritual man who has
been thus illumined does not limp or leave
the path, but bears all things. Glimpsing our true country from
afar, he puts up with adversities; he is not saddened by the
things of time, but finds his strength in God. He lowers his
pride and endures, possessing patience through humility. That
true light ‘which enlightens every man who comes into the
world’ bestows itself on those who reverence it, shining where
it wills, on whom it wills, and revealing itself according to the
will of God the Son. “When this light begins to shine upon the
man who sat ‘in darkness and the shadow of death”, in the
darkness of evil and the shadow of sin, he is shocked, he calls
himself to account, repents of his misdeeds in shame, and says:

Lent Brings Us to Self Examination
Pope Francis offers excellent insights into what
to ask ourselves during this season and beyond.
“The best way to guard one’s heart is with the
daily practice of an ‘examination of
conscience,’ in which one quietly reviews what bad things one
has done and what good things one has failed to do for God,
one’s neighbor and oneself.
“The questions include:
Do I only turn to God when I'm in need?
Do I take attend Mass on Sundays and holy days of
obligation?
Do I begin and end the day with prayer?
Am I embarrassed to show that I am a Christian?
Do I rebel against God's plan?
Am I envious, hot-tempered, biased?
Am I honest and fair with everyone or do I fuel the "throwaway
culture?"
In my marital and family relations, do I uphold morality as
taught in the Gospels?
Do I honor and respect my parents?
Have I refused newly conceived life? Have I snuffed out the
gift of life? Have I helped do so?
Do I respect the environment?
Am I part worldly and part believer?
Do I overdo it with eating, drinking, smoking and amusements?
Am I overly concerned about my physical well-being, my possessions?
How do I use my time? Am I lazy?
Do I want to be served?
Do I dream of revenge, hold grudges?
Am I meek, humble and a builder of peace?

Lent Brings Us to the Question of Our
Level of Commitment
“So…why are even committed attenders
attending less often? There are at least
10 reasons:
1. Greater Affluence
2. Higher focus on kids’ activities
3. More Travel
4. Blended and single parent families
In a shared custody family, perfect attendance for a
child or teen might be 26 Sundays a year.
5. Online Options
6. The cultural disappearance of guilt
7. Self-directed spirituality
8. Failure to see a direct benefit
9. Valuing attendance over engagement
When someone merely attends church, the likelihood of showing up regularly or even engaging their faith decreases over
time. At our church, I find our most engaged people—people
who serve, give, invite and who are in a community group—are
our most frequent attenders.
10. A massive culture shift
How are you showing the relevance of an ancient faith to the
current generation?”
I would say another challenge here in Calhoun is there are so
many businesses open on Sundays that require employees to
work many or most Sundays. Many who want to come must

El Papá Francisco ofrece excelentes perspectivas
en lo que preguntarnos durante esta temporada y
más allá. “La mejor manera de proteger el
corazón de uno es con la práctica diaria de un
‘examen de conciencia,’ en el que uno revisa en silencio las cosas
malas que uno ha hecho y qué cosas buenas que uno ha fallado en
hacer por Dios, al prójimo y a uno mismo.

• ¿Sólo se buscó a Dios cuando estoy en necesidad?
• ¿Asisto a misa los domingos y fiestas de precepto?
• ¿Empiezo y termino el día con la oración?

Nuestro Nivel de Compromiso
“Entonces... ¿por qué incluso los asistentes
comprometidos asisten con menos frecuencia?
Hay por lo menos 10 razones:
1. Mayor Afluencia
2. Centrados más en las actividades de los
niños
3. Más Viajes
4. Mezclas de familias de padres e individuales
En una familia de custodia compartida, la asistencia perfecta para un niño o adolescente puede ser de 26 domingos al año.
5. Opciones en el internet
6. La cultural desaparición de culpabilidad
7. Espiritualidad Auto-dirigido
8. La falta de ver un beneficio directo
9. Valorar la asistencia sobre el compromiso
Cuando alguien solo atiende a la iglesia, la probabilidad de aparecer regularmente o incluso participar su fe disminuyen con el
tiempo. En nuestra iglesia, encuentro nuestras personas más comprometidos- las personas que sirven, dan, invitan y que se encuentran en un grupo en comunidad- son nuestros asistentes más frecuentes.

Yo diría otro desafío aquí en Calhoun es que hay muchos negocios
abiertos los domingos que requieren que los empleados trabajen
muchos o la mayoría de los domingos. Muchos de los que quieren
venir debe elegir entre mantener a sus familias y la práctica de su
fe y es una gran injusticia.

Other Thoughts of Father Joe
But for others it is a need to engage God in new ways. The
Church is struggling to provide meaningful ways and environments for that encounter to take place to an increasingly diverse population. No one group of any general age,
race, culture, or general background is the same. We have
less in common. And the Church also faces the struggle of
having limited resources. We are learning to ask the question: “What do you need?” in many different ways to try
to get more complete answers. Part of the struggle is some
perceive the church as a social service organization. We
are not. Some perceive us as an educational organization.
We are not. Some perceive that we provide for people’s
social needs. That is not our focus. Those are elements of
what we do, but not who we are. We are an institution
committed to bringing Christ to people and people to
Christ. Pope Francis said: “the Church isn’t an NGO or a
humanitarian agency but has to bring Christ to everyone”.
“A Church that does not bring Jesus to people, that is a
dead Church”.

Otros Pensamientos del Padre José
Sin embargo, para otros es una necesidad de involucrar a Dios de
nuevas maneras. La Iglesia está luchando para proporcionar formas significativas y entornos para que ese encuentro se lleve a
cabo para una población cada vez más diversa. Ningún grupo de
cualquier edad general, la raza, la cultura, o el fondo general es
la misma. Tenemos menos en común. Y la Iglesia también se
enfrenta a la lucha de tener recursos limitados. Estamos aprendiendo a hacer la pregunta: “Qué necesitamos?” de muchas maneras diferentes para tratar de obtener respuestas más completas.
Parte de la lucha es que algunos perciben la iglesia como una
organización de servicio social. No somos. Algunos nos perciben
como una organización educativa. No somos. Algunos perciben
que ofrecemos a las necesidades sociales de las personas. Ese no
es nuestro enfoque. Esos son los elementos de lo que hacemos,
pero no lo que somos. Somos una institución comprometida con
llevar a Cristo a las personas y las personas a Cristo. El Papá
Francisco dijo: “La Iglesia no es una NGO o una agencia humanitaria sino que tiene que llevar a Cristo a todos.” “Una Iglesia
que no lleva a Jesús a la gente, esa es una iglesia muerta".
