In preparation for this Mass, you are also invited to make a Novena of Masses - beginning this Sunday, August 7. A list of prayers are found this week’s bulletin to assist you as you participate in the novena (nine days) leading up to the Solemnity. Confessions will also be heard between the 6:15 and 8:00 Masses, Monday through Friday during the novena. Solemnity of Assumption Mass Schedule Some parishioners have found Consecrated Hosts in the parking lot, in the Holy Water Font, or placed in missals in the pews. This is very troubling since we firmly believe that these Hosts are indeed the Body of Christ. With this news, I believe it is time to remind all parishioners about the proper reception of Communion. There are two ways to receive the Body of Christ (1) on the tongue, or (2) in the hands. If in the hands, the communicant bows the head slightly in reverence before the Sacrament and then places one hand (with the palm up) on the other, holding them both out as they approach the minister. (See the picture above). As the minister holds up the host, he or she says “The Body of Christ.” The communicant responds, “Amen.” Then, the host is placed in the top hand. The communicant should take a short step to the side and briefly stop, taking the host with the bottom hand and placing it in his or her mouth before returning to the pew. (Out of respect for the Eucharist, cleanliness of hands is expected.) Under no condition should a communicant walk off with the host. If the communicant wishes to bring a host to an elderly or disabled family member in the pew during Mass or later to someone who is homebound, he should ask the priest, deacon, or appointed extraordinary minister to assist them. Thank you! An Urgent Appeal by Pope Benedict XVI Pope Benedict addressed the severe African droughts in his prayers following the Sunday Angelus on July 17. “I am following with deep concern the news from the Horn of Africa, particularly Somalia, stricken by a severe drought and then, in some areas, even by heavy rains that are causing a humanitarian catastrophe,” the Pope said, according to Vatican Radio. The Catholic Agency for Overseas Development recently reported that 10 million East Africans are facing starvation and death due to the severe drought. The agency noted that this year’s conditions are the worst in living memory. Rain is not expected until October. “I hope international mobilization grows to send timely relief to our brothers and sisters already sorely tried, among which there are so many children,” the Pope continued. “May our solidarity and the concrete support to all people of good not fail these suffering people.” Respond to this urgent need by visiting the following website and by making a contribution through Catholic Relief Services. http://www.catholicrelief.org St. Rose of Lima Church 5 Solemnity of the Assumption Novena Please consider praying this Novena and/or attending daily Mass (see front of bulletin for schedule) from August 7 - August 15 in honor of Our Lady’s Assumption into Heaven.
