Bianca needs your Bianca necesita su

ayuda
“Bianca’s a sweetheart. She comes to school
everyday. She is super happy, caring,
compassionate and completely optimistic,” said
Julie Mahoney, physical education teacher at
South Street Elementary, Castle Rock.
Bianca Gamez is now too sick to go to school.
In January 2005, Bianca had
a relapse and the ten-yearold is dying of leukemia. Her
only hope of recovery is to
receive a bone marrow
transplant
“She’ll need a transplant to
save her life, but her family
is poor and doesn’t have
insurance,” said Brenda
Smith, founder and president
of Compassion for Kids.
“Without money, there will
be no transplant.”
It’s a lot of money, a
seemingly insurmountable
fortune of up to a million
dollars. But that does not
deter those who love and
care for Bianca.
Her parents are ranch hands
and they have received many
generous offers of help.
Compassion for Kids and
South Street Elementary
School are organizing
fundraising events including a sponsored Run for
Bianca, which will take place on May 14.
Money is one thing but the challenge is two fold.
Firstly, Bianca needs a suitable donor and that
search is not easy. Matching donors to a patient
is like trying to win a lottery.
“Without a bone marrow match, there is nothing
doctors can do,” Smith said.
Chances would be improved if more Hispanics
were registered as possible donors and Smith
encourages the local community to volunteer for
a blood test to see if there is a suitable match.
“She’s an incredible girl, she is sharp and
intelligent. She loves computers and math,” said
Smith. “Her eyes just shine.”
Brenda Smith founded Compassion For Kids in
2002 after her five-year-old daughter Chelsea was
diagnosed with leukemia. Compassion For Kids
offers support for the social and emotional needs
of the children and their families and is 100%
volunteer operated.
For further information contact Brenda Smith
on

or
visit
www.compassionforkids.com.
What you can do:
- For a blood test, call Memorial Hospital 3655000.
- To donate cash make checks payable to
Compassion for Kids with a note that it is for
Bianca’s fund and send to PO Box 62824,
Colorado Springs, CO 80962.
- To participate in Run for Bianca, to walk or run
and raise money for Bianca’s treatment on May
14 contact Julie Mahoney (303) 814-8534.

“Bianca es una cariña. Ella viene a escuela al diario.
Ella está súper feliz, bondadosa, compasiva y
completamente optimista,” dijo Julie Mahoney, maestra
leucemia. Su única
esperanza para una
recuperación será recibir
un trasplante de médula
ósea.
“Ella necesitará un
trasplante para salvar su
vida, pero su familia es
pobre y no tiene seguro,”
dijo Brenda Smith, la
fundadora y presidente de
Compassion for Kids
(Compasión para Niños).
“Sin dinero, no habrá un
trasplante.”
Es mucho dinero, una
fortuna aparentemente
insuperable hasta a un
millón de dólares. Pero
eso no disuade a los que
adoran y cuidan a Bianca.
Compassion for Kids y South Street
Smith. “Sus ojos brillan.”
Brenda Smith fundó Compassion for Kids en 2002
Compassion for Kids
adicional contacte a Brenda Smith (719) 559-3128 o
Mahoney (303) 814-8534. - Wayne Young

9-year-old girl shot and killed by
brother
We have all heard the sad news: a sixyear-old boy finds a gun, the gun goes off
and a young boy kills his sister in Pueblo.
Consider what this six year old has to
contend with for as long as he lives. What
can we in the community say? Could we
ever comprehend what the family is
feeling? What type of condolences can we
offer?
Do we dare express our questions:
where were the parents, why would God let this happen? The latter you can
inquire with your clergy.
This is not a time to discuss weapon security and that is for the local officials
to contend with.
To the Arellano family we can only feel for them, remind them that we also
hurt and share their loss.
Be assured your pain is in our prayers.

DSW customers: ID theft risk
Colorado Attorney General
John W. Suthers advised
consumers who have used credit
cards to make purchases at DSW
Shoe Warehouse stores since
October 2004 to contact their
credit card issuers immediately.
DSW’s parent company, Retail
Ventures, Inc., announced
yesterday that certain personal
financial information of its
customers has been compromised.
DSW has six stores in Colorado
(Littleton, Westminster, Cherry
Creek, Broomfield, Lakewood,
and Colorado Springs).
Suthers also called on DSW to
immediately contact each
Colorado consumer that is
affected, and to inform them of the
breach and urge them to review
their credit card accounts and
credit reports for suspicious
activity.
“I am extremely concerned
about the recent wave of security
breaches that have affected
consumers’ personal and financial
information,” said Suthers.
“I am encouraged that DSW
has disclosed the unauthorized
access to sensitive customer
records, and I call on the company
to notify every affected
Coloradoan as soon as possible.”
According to DSW, the
company has identified consumers
whose credit card and other
purchase information has been
accessed by unauthorized third
parties,
and has notified affected credit
card companies and banks.
DSW has advised customers to
call DSW’s toll-free special
assistance number, 1-800-3140224, for more information.
In addition, consumers should
review the information on the
Attorney General web page
(www.ago.state.co.us)for more
information on preventing identity
theft and what to do if their
personal financial information is
compromised.
Delta Dental’s smile-a-bration offers free dental care
Seven dental offices in
Colorado Springs will provide one
day of free dental care for
uninsured children in Colorado on
Saturday, April 30, 2005 as part
of Delta Dental’s Smile-a-bration.
The statewide program,
sponsored by Delta Dental Plan of
Colorado, Perfect Teeth and Kaiser
Permanente, will offer dental
exams, cleanings, fillings, X-rays,
teeth sealants, crowns and
extractions to any uninsured child
up to the age of 18. The
appointment line will be open
from March 22 to April 1 or until
all appointments
are filled.
“This is the
third year Delta
Dental has been
able to provide
free dental care
to those children
who might never
otherwise have
the opportunity
to see a dentist,”
said Kate Paul,
president and
CEO of Delta
Dental Plan of
Colorado.
“Last year we
treated more
than 3, 300
children.
Unfortunately
we had to turn
many
away
because there
just
wasn’t
enough money
to take care of
all the children
in Colorado
who need dental
care. We need
to identify ways to expand this
important program.”
Delta Dental will reimburse the
150 dentists expected to
participate in the program with the
exception of 18 Perfect Teeth
clinics. They have agreed to
donate more than $60,000 of care
to the program.
For the second year, Kaiser
Permanente will donate its
services to make appointments. In
addition, participating dentists can
donate their reimbursement fee to
this program or to other non-profit
organizations that provide dental
care to the needy. Since the
inception of Smile-a-bration in
2002, 330 dentists have provided
free dental care to 5,600 children
statewide.
Delta Dental has donated more
than $1.25 million to the program
and participating dentists have
donated $24,000 of their fees to
non-profit organizations providing
additional dental care to the needy.

Juan Pablo II encargó a finales
de la década de los noventa la
realización de un estudio secreto
sobre la hipótesis de dimisión del
“romano pontífice”, el cual
resolvió que no era conveniente la
renuncia Karol Wojtyla pues ello
abriría un cisma en la Iglesia, se
reveló ayer en el diario La
Reppublica.
“No es oportuno que un
romano pontífice dimita”,
señalaba el reporte en sus
conclusiones. El documento fue
encargado por el Papa al hoy
extinto cardenal Vincenzo Fagiolo,
quien entonces era uno de los
principales expertos de derecho
canónico, asegura el vaticanista
Marco Politi.

bocadillos.
Los resultados mostraron que
las niñas que regularmente
satisfacían sus requisitos del calcio
durante el curso del estudio
consumían un promedio de 13
IRS anuncia las doce estafas mayores de 2005
El Servicio de Impuestos
Internos (IRS)ha revelado su lista
anual de las estafas más notorias
en la Docena de Estafas Mayores”,
recordando a los contribuyentes a
mantenerse alertas sobre las
conspiraciones que prometen
eliminar todos sus impuestos o que
suenan demasiado buenas para ser
verdad.
La “Docena de Estafas
Mayores” de 2005 incluye varias
estafas nuevas que manipulan las
leyes que gobiernan a las
organizaciones caritativas, abusan
de los servicios de asesoramiento
de crédito o dependen de
argumentos ya rechazados para
reclamar ser exentos de impuestos.
La agencia también observa que el
robo de identidad sigue
aumentando, aprovechándose de
personas a través del correo
electrónico, el Internet o por
teléfono, aun usando impostores
que pretenden ser representantes
del IRS.
“La Docena de Estafas
Mayores es un recordatorio que las
estafas tributarias pueden tomar
muchas formas,” dijo Mark W.
Everson, Comisionado del IRS.
“No se deje engañar por estos
estafadores que le tratan de vender
promesas falsas. Ellos toman su
dinero y los dejan con una cuenta
tributaria alta.”
Envolverse con estafas y
esquemas contributivos le pueden
traer encarcelamiento y multas. El
IRS
regularmente
está
persiguiendo y cerrando las
actividades de los promotores de
estas estafas.
Pero los
contribuyentes también deben de
recordar que cualquier persona que
cae en estas trampas pudiera
enfrentarse con el impuesto
debido, más el interés y multas
acumulados.
Las personas que sospechen
fraude contributivo pueden llamar
al IRS al: 1.800.829.0433
“La Docena de Estafas
Mayores”
1. Uso Indebido de Fideicomisos.
Por varios años, los promotores
inescrupulosos han tratado de
convencer a los contribuyentes de
transferir sus bienes a fideicomisos
ilegales. Prometen reducir la
cantidad de ingresos sujetos a
impuestos, poder deducir gastos
personales y reducir los impuestos
sobre herencias y obsequios. Sin
embargo, algunos de estos planes
de fideicomiso no cumplen con lo
prometido y el IRS está
activamente examinando este tipo
de arreglos.
2. Argumentos Frívolos.
Promotores de estos tipos de
estafas se han dado a conocer
con reclamos exagerados
como diciendo que la
Enmienda
16
a
la
Constitución de EEUU
concerniente al poder del
Congreso para imponer y
recaudar impuestos por
ingresos nunca fue ratificada;
que salarios no son ingresos;
que el declarar y pagar
impuestos es estrictamente
voluntario; que el ser obligado a
presentar la forma 1040 viola el
derecho de la Quinta Enmienda de
la Constitución contra autoincriminación; o la Cuarta
Enmienda de derecho a
privacidad. No se crea de estos ni
de otros argumentos semejantes.
Tales argumentos son falsos y han
sido rechazados por las cortes.
Aunque todos los contribuyentes
tienen el derecho de refutar sus
deudas tributarias en las cortes, no
tienen el derecho a desobedecer la
ley.
3. Preparadores de Declaraciones
Fraudulentas. Preparadores de
impuestos deshonestos pueden
causar muchos dolores de cabeza
a los contribuyentes que caen
víctimas de sus esquemas. Estos
preparadores abusivos obtienen
ganancia financiera desviando una
porción del reembolso de sus
clientes, cobrándoles cuotas
excesivas por preparar sus
declaraciones. Atraen nuevos
clientes con promesas de
reembolsos más grandes. Los
contribuyentes deben escoger con
cuidado a quien les prepare su
declaración. Como dice el dicho
‘Si suena demasiado bueno para
ser verdad, tal vez lo sea.’ No
importa quien prepare su
declaración, al final, es el
contribuyente que firma quien es
responsable por su veracidad.
4. Agencias de Asesoramiento de
Crédito.
Los contribuyentes deben tener
mucho cuidado con agencias de
Asesoramiento de Crédito que
prometen mejorar el estado de su
crédito, que promueven contratos
de pagos o les cobran cuotas
demasiado altas, o les hacen
cargos mensuales o ‘donativos’
obligatorios que solo sirven en
aumentar su deuda. La División
de Organizaciones Exentas y
Entidades Gubernamentales del
IRS ha hecho de la auditoria de
organizaciones asesoras de crédito
una prioridad porque algunas de
estas organizaciones que son
exentas de impuestos y cuyo
propósito es educar a clientes de
bajos recursos con problemas de
crédito están cobrando cantidades
exorbitantes sin proveer el
asesoramiento prometido.
5. Doctrina del “Derecho Al
Reclamo”.
En esta estafa el contribuyente
presenta la declaración en la cual
onzas de leche diariamente, el cual
es casi dos veces la cantidad
consumida por las muchachas que
no satisfacían sus requisitos del
calcio.
Las muchachas que consumían
la leche también tenían medidas
considerablemente más altas de
salud ósea al fin del estudio.
Aunque ambos grupos
consumían
más
bebidas
azucaradas cuando maduraron,
solamente las muchachas con
madres que tenían la costumbre de
servir leche con las comidas y
bocadillos todavía consumían
cantidades significativas de leche,
y recibían cantidades suficientes
de calcio, a la edad de 9 años.
trata de tomar una deducción por
la cantidad entera de sus
ganancias. El promotor le
aconseja al contribuyente que
anote la deducción como “el gasto
necesario para la producción de
ingresos’ o como ‘compensación
por servicios actualmente
rendidos.’
Esta supuesta
deducción está basada en la
interpretación errada del código
tributario y no tiene ninguna base
legal.
6.
Deducción
de
“No
Ganancias”.
Esta estafa es similar a la ‘Doctrina
del Derecho Al Reclamo’ en la
cual los contribuyentes pretenden
tomar el total de ingresos como
gastos misceláneos en el Anexo A
del formulario 1040.
El
contribuyente anota su ingreso
bruto ajustado (AGI) bajo la
sección de “Otras Deducciones
Misceláneas” del Anexo A y le
agrega una nota a la declaración
refiriéndose a ciertos documentos
en las cortes e incluye la frase
‘Ganancia No Realizada”.
7. “Corporación Sole”.
Desde septiembre del año 2004 el
Departamento de Justicia ha
entablado juicios en contra de seis
promotores de este esquema y
puesto quejas en contra de otros
once. Los participantes de esta
estafa aplican para incorporarse
bajo el pretexto de ser “obispo” o
“mayordomo”
de
una
organización o sociedad religiosa
inventada de una sola persona con
la idea de permitir al contribuyente
de quedar exento de impuestos por
ser ‘una organización religiosa no
lucrativa.’ Cuando es usado
correctamente, este estatuto
permite a líderes religiosos a
separarse legalmente del control y
dominio de la iglesia. Pero estas
reglas han sido torcidas en
seminarios de tal manera que se les
cobran cuotas a los contribuyentes
de $1,000 o más y se les dice que
“Corporación Sole” es una forma
legal de eludir el pago de
impuesto, manutención de hijos y
deudas personales.
8. Robo de Identidad.
Es mejor ser muy selectivo cuando
considera revelar sus datos
personales. Los ladrones de
identidad han usado datos
personales de otras personas para
ganar acceso a cuentas financieras,
cargando compras a tarjetas de

USCIS implements 2004 H-1B visa reform
US Citizenship and
Immigration Services (USCIS) is
preparing regulations for the
implementation of the Omnibus
Appropriations Act for fiscal year
2005. Pursuant to an exemption
established under this Act, USCIS
will be able to process additional
petitions for H-1B workers for FY
2005. The available petitions for
FY 2005 will be applied to all
qualified H-1B nonimmigrant
aliens, and will not be limited to
those individuals holding a

USCIS previously reported that
the applicable provisions of the H1B Visa Reform Act become
effective on March 9, 2005. The
correct effective date is March 8,
2005. However, USCIS advises

Drought relief for farmers and ranchers
Congressman Salazar (CO-3)
announced that Colorado farmers
and ranchers who suffered losses
in 2003 and 2004 due to drought
will be eligible for disaster
assistance starting March 14,
2005. It is expected that payments
will be available as early as the end
of this month.
“A drought may not be as
sudden or dramatic as a hurricane,
but it is just as much a natural
disaster,” said Salazar. “We need
to help our communities recover
from drought losses.
I am pleased that Colorado
ranchers and farmers will soon
have the assistance they need.”
Certain 2005 crop losses will
also be eligible for disaster
assistance, to be announced later.
Eligible Colorado farmers and
ranchers should contact their

BBB opens Pueblo office
One year ago, the BBB, serving
Pueblo, merged with the BBB of
the Pikes Peak Region to form
what is now known as the BBB of
Southern Colorado. Serving 25
counties and operating out of its
Colorado Springs office, the BBB
is now pleased to announce the
opening of its second office
located in downtown Pueblo.
The BBB’s Pueblo office,
located on the lower level of the
distinguished Thatcher building, at
503 N. Main, is now open for area
businesses by appointment only.
Those wishing to discuss
membership opportunities or other
BBB matters can simply make an
appointment by calling 719-5421605.
In addition, the BBB phone and
online services, such as filing a
complaint or checking out a
business continue to be available
to the public at any time by calling
our toll free number at 866-2061800 or logging onto our website
at www.bbbsc.org.
“By opening this office in
Pueblo, we hope to establish
ourselves once again in the Pueblo
community as the place businesses
and consumers can turn for
information and support on a
variety of consumer and business
issues,” says BBB CEO Carol
Odell.
“The BBB never really left
Pueblo, but through our merger
last year we know that many in
Pueblo felt as though the BBB had
left the community. Now we once
again have a visible presence in
Pueblo and will continue to offer
our services as needed.”
Beware of credit monitoring companies
With identity theft on the rise –
so too are the number of people
looking to check out their credit
reports or seeking out a credit
monitoring company to do the
work for them. But before you
sign on with such a company,
make sure you’ve done your
homework.
Free copies of credit reports are
now available to Coloradoans once
a year. You can obtain a copy of
your credit report from each of the
three major credit bureaus:
Equifax (800-685-1111), Experian
(800-270-6031) and Trans Union
(800-888-4213). Many people
who find they don’t have time to
do the legwork, sign up for
companies that will do the work
for you.
Credit bureaus and other
companies offer credit monitoring
services for $30-$150 a year,
depending on all that’s included.
Some monitoring companies will
provide you with a copy of your
credit report on a quarterly or
monthly basis.
Others will even provide you
with email notices of any changes
in your credit report.
What to watch out for,
however, are the companies that
are not “doing you a service” but
rather using your fear of identity
theft to obtain your personal
information. The BBB of
Southern Colorado, along with the
FDIC, warn consumers to beware
of telephone or email scams
promoting credit monitoring
services, “free” credit reports or
identity
theft
insurance.
Fraudulent companies often use
false or misleading statements to
get you to send money or divulge
personal information.
Remember whether you choose
to order your own credit report or
pay a service to do it all depends
on how closely you want to
monitor your credit. In addition,
it also depends on how much you
are willing to pay for the
convenience and extra benefits of
a company doing the legwork for
you.
Check out credit monitoring
companies with the BBB before
you do business. Log on to

9. Abuso de Organizaciones
Caritativas y las Deducciones.
El IRS ha notado un aumento
en la manera en que las
organizaciones
caritativas
encubren indebidamente los
ingresos o bienes de los impuestos.
Por ejemplo, esto puede ocurrir
cuando un contribuyente transfiere
sus bienes o ingresos a una
organización caritativa exenta de
impuestos pero aun mantiene el
control sobre sus bienes o sus
ingresos, de tal manera obteniendo
una deducción de sus impuestos
sin transferir el beneficio a la
organización. Una contribución de
‘permiso de derecho’ de fachada
histórica a una organización de
preservación es otro ejemplo.

Mexico could be host to regular-season game
The first NFL regular-season

Commissioner Paul

a regular-season game outside the
U.S. was likely this year. Michael

and general counsel, declined to
discuss specifics but told The
Arizona Republic that playing
such a game is “very unique and
appealing prospect.” “It would be
a historic and unprecedented
event,” Bidwill said.

outstanding 14-of-17 (82.4%)
from three-point range. They also
made
25-of-33

line
as
mentioned.
Michael Morse
paced Metro State
with 20 points, while
Mark Worthington
had 19.
Williamson and
Keith Borgan each finished with
18. “We did a great job taking
away their inside game and the
outside shots they hit were
contested,” said USD head coach
Dave Boots. “They are just an
outstanding
ball
club.”
The Coyotes, who
lost their first game
since Feb. 3, end their
season with a schoolrecords for wins in a
season (27), points in
a season (2,742, 198990), three-point field
goals in a season (276, 1998-99)
and tied for most field goals in a
season (946, 1989-90).
Metro still on for National quest
Metro State 89, South Dakota 84
An outstanding performance
from the 22nd-ranked and thirdseeded South Dakota men’s
basketball team (27-6) was
overshadowed by an equally
outstanding performance from the
Metro State Roadrunners (29-3),
as both teams shot over 51% from
the field and 56% from three-point
range in the Coyotes, 89-84, defeat
to the second-ranked and topseeded Roadrunners in the NCAA
Division II North Central Regional
Finals at the Auraria Events Center
in Denver, Colo., in front of 1,752.
South Dakota, who was led by
two all-tournament team
performers, senior Josh Mueller
(Hartford, S.D.) and junior Turner
Trofholz (Schuyler, Neb.), were on
top of Metro State in every facet
of the game, except free throw
attempts where the Roadrunners
made 25-of-33 (84.6%) compared
to 11-of-13 (84.6%) for the
Coyotes.
For the third time in as many
games in the regional tournament,
USD scored first on a lay-up by
Trofholz at 18:50. However, Metro
State garnered a five-point lead,
12-7, at 15:54, on a three from
Greg Muth.
The Coyotes then went on an 8-0
run by a three-pointer from
freshman Eric Hall (Huron, S.D.),
a lay-up from senior Luke Tibbetts
(Sioux Falls, S.D.) and a trey
from Mueller, giving USD a 1512 lead at 13:42.
From there USD would lead
until the 2:26 mark in the first half
when Drew Williamson hit one
of his six three-pointers on the
night, giving the Roadrunners a
34-33 lead. USD turned the ball
over four times the rest of the
half, allowing Metro State to take
a four-point lead into the locker
room at halftime, 37-33.
In the second half, Hall cut the
Roadrunner lead to one on three
of his 12 points. Metro State
would then score the next six
points to take a 43-36 lead at
17:23. The game was within six
until the 13:24 mark, when
Williamson hit his fourth threepointer of the night, to put Metro
State up nine, 47-38. On the
evening, Williamson was a perfect
6-of-6 from behind the arc. The
only shots he missed were two
from inside the arc.
The Roadrunner lead got to as
many as 14, 72-58, on a Ben
Ortner jumper at 5:34.
The Coyotes clawed away at the
Metro State and was able to make
it close in the closing seconds,
finally cutting the lead to five
points, the final score, 89-84, on
Mueller’s final points of his career,
a three pointer with 30 seconds
remaining in the game.
Mueller led all scorers with 27
points, while Trofholz finished
with his second straight doubledouble of 26 points and 11
rebounds. Hall completed his
freshman season with 12 points in
the third start of his career.
USD shot 51.7% (30-of-58) from
the field and 56.5% (13-of-23)
from downtown. At the foul line,
the Coyotes made 84.6% (11-of13) and out-rebounded the
Roadrunners, 33-24, including 12
offensive boards.
Metro State was 25-of-46
The Adams State College men’s indoor track & field team finished second at the NCAA Division II
National Championships in Boston, Mass., the Grizzlies’ best ever finish at the NCAA Division II
level. The ASC women finished fourth behind a national title in the 800 meters by senior Victoria Martinez.

The Honda of SUVs
My first visit to Philadelphia in
over 20 years was made so much
better as I was able to drive a 2005
Honda Pilot during my stay. I
knew the big city would affect me,
born on the plains of Southern
Colorado and Philly is nothing but

I felt very unconformable, so I
stayed nine miles away in the

But the Pilot did every thing one
would want in a small SUV and
made the stay all the more
enjoyable.
Performance, versatility and
legendary Honda reliability—
these qualities make the 2005 Pilot

competition in 2002, 2003 and 2004. In 2005, the
Pilot is poised to do the same.
In addition to the advanced 4WD system, 5-speed
automatic transmission, seating for up to eight, and
available power moon roof, the Pilot offers 255
horses of pure capability.
You get advanced safety and engineering,
efficiency and great handling, too. Call it unique,
exceptional, or simply the Honda of SUVs.
One look at the Pilot and you get the impression
that this SUV was built to last. Its muscular flanks
and wide stance give it a commanding presence that
echoes big capabilities, both on- and off-road.
Beefy tires, roof rails and the new moon roof on
the EX. All that leather promises a whole lot of
outdoor fun.
The Pilot’s clean lines also hint at its quiet and
comfortable nature at highway speeds. It’s a shape
that’s more classic than trendy, because rugged good
looks never go out of style.
Stepping inside a Pilot is a refreshingly expansive
experience. With seating for up to eight, it’s hard to
run out of room.
The Pilot is versatile, too. Its 60/40 split seats fold
flat, making room for whatever the day’s to-do list
demands.
The Pilot also has a place for everything. Each
door has a storage pocket and beverage holders
abound. The front armrest flips up to reveal a large
center console that holds 13 CDs and hides a 12volt power outlet and phone cradle.
With extras like a moon roof, the Honda DVD
entertainment system, the satellite-linked navigation
system and the EX model’s 8-way power driver’s
seat, you may never want to step outside. Nor leave

SUV safety report
(NAPSA)—Today’s SUVconsumers are driven toward
finding safer vehicles—and that’s
helped steer auto manufacturers
toward providing more options.
However, the number of SUVs
available can sometimes make
finding one with the right safety
features seem confusing. This
auto-safety overview may help
you find the right SUV for you and
your family.
Four-Wheel
Independent
Suspension
This feature allows each wheel
to react individually to bumps in
the road and increases the chances
that all wheels will remain firmly
planted on the ground. For
instance, the Porsche Cayenne
features independent suspension at
all four corners. The set-up
delivers handling similar to that of
a sport sedan, with precise and
responsive steering that could be
vital during an evasive maneuver.
Unibody Structure
A unibody offers a lower center
of gravity and helps reduce body
sway, which also helps keep all
four wheels firmly on the ground.
It also provides increased rigidity
to help further enhance handling
and to provide outstanding crash
characteristics. SUVs such as the
Cayenne feature rigid unibody
construction.
They
use
highstrength steel for 60 percent
of the structure.
Electronic Stability Control
Systems (ESC)
ESC systems are designed to
“take over” if a car’s sensors detect
a loss of control. The Cayenne
features Porsche Stability
Management (PSM), Porsche
Traction Management (PTM) and
Porsche Active Suspension
Management (PASM). PSM and
the PTM four-wheel drive system
coordinate the anti-lock brake
system, the automatic slip
regulation system and the
automatic brake differential to help
restabilize the vehicle in extreme
steering conditions. PSM “tells”
PTM to open the differential locks
and/or apply brakes to individual
wheels to help restabilize the
vehicle. PASM helps control body
sway and dive motions.
Anti-Lock Disc Brakes
Many of today’s cars are
equipped with anti-lock brakes,

Celebrity speeders race for kids
(NAPSA)—Being a celebrity
has its privileges and driving a
high performance Toyota sports
coupe over 100 mph through the
streets of Long Beach, California
is one of them. For the past 28
years, more than 300 fan favorites
such as Cameron Diaz, George

Sean Astin, Edwin “Buzz” Aldrin,
Gene Hackman, Clint Eastwood
John Elway and dozens of others,
have settled in behind the wheel
at the Toyota Pro/Celebrity Race
and roared through 10 laps of hairraising fun—all for the benefit of
children’s charities.
The race is a highlight of the
Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach
and has become the largest
celebrity-racing event in the world.
Preparing for the race involves a
little more than just showing up.
Participants commit to eight days
of charity involvement, car
preparation and actual racing,
including an intensive four-day
session that teaches stars how to
handle the complexities of a grand
prix track. Once training is
completed, they endure a practice
session on the seaside street course
in Long Beach, followed by the
actual race (April 9), played out
in front of tens of thousands of
screaming fans, and a national
television audience.
“Lots of adrenaline flows out
there,” said Les Unger, national
motor sports manager at Toyota
Motor Sales, U.S.A. “The

it’s not easy to describe.”
Beyond thrilling both race fans
and themselves, the star-studded
group raises money for a national
organization called “Racing for

hospitals.
Each year, the celebrities travel
to Miller Children’s Hospital in
Long Beach to spend time with
sick and recovering children,
evoking smiles, laughter and
inspiration.
Since 1991, the race has raised

vehicles with disc brakes, since
SUVs frequently carry heavy
loads.
Aerodynamics
Poor aerodynamics can generate
lift under a vehicle, creating
instability. The Cayenne features
spoilers to reduce airflow around
the wheels and the vehicle’s design
was created specifically to reduce
lift. The SUV behaves in a way
similar to a sports car due to its
streamlined shape.
Airbags
All Cayenne models have dual
front airbags, a pair of side impact
bags and curtain airbags. The
vehicle also has seatbelt-latch
pretensioners and the front seats
have belt-force limiters.

COMMUNITY NEWS
IRS announces the 2005 dirty dozen
The Internal Revenue Service
today unveiled its annual listing of
notorious tax scams, the “Dirty
Dozen,” reminding taxpayers to be
wary of schemes that promise to
eliminate taxes or otherwise sound
too good to be true.
The “Dirty Dozen” for 2005
includes several new scams that
either manipulate laws governing
charitable groups, abuse credit
counseling services or rely on
refuted arguments to claim tax
exemptions.
The agency also sees the
continuing spread of identity theft
schemes preying on people
through e-mail, the Internet or the
phone, sometimes with con artists
posing as representatives of the
IRS.
“The Dirty Dozen is a reminder
that tax scams can take many
forms,” IRS Commissioner Mark
W. Everson said. “Don’t be fooled
by false promises peddled by scam
artists. They’ll take your money
and leave you with a hefty tax
bill.”
Involvement with tax schemes
can lead to imprisonment and
fines. The IRS routinely pursues
and shuts down promoters of these
scams. But taxpayers should also
remember that anyone pulled into
these schemes can face repayment
of taxes plus interest and penalties.
Persons who suspect tax fraud
can call the IRS at 1-800-8290433.
The Dirty Dozen
1. Trust Misuse.
Unscrupulous promoters for years
have urged taxpayers to transfer
assets into trusts. They promise
reduction of income subject to tax,
deductions for personal expenses
and reduced estate or gift taxes.
However, some trusts do not
deliver the promised tax benefits,
and the IRS is actively examining
these arrangements.
2. Frivolous Arguments.
Promoters have been known to
make the following outlandish
claims: that the Sixteenth
Amendment
concerning
congressional power to lay and
collect income taxes was never
ratified; that wages are not income;
that filing a return and paying taxes
are merely voluntary; and that
being required to file Form 1040
violates the Fifth Amendment right
against
selfincrimination or
t h e F o u r t h
Amendment right
to privacy.
Don’t believe
these or other
similar claims.
Such arguments
are false and have
been thrown out of
court.
While
taxpayers have the
right to contest
their tax liabilities
in court, no one
has the right to
disobey the law.
3.
Return
Preparer Fraud.
Dishonest return
preparers can
cause many headaches for
taxpayers who fall victim to their
ploys. Such preparers derive
financial gain by skimming a
portion of their clients’ refunds
and charging inflated fees for
return preparation services. They
attract new clients by promising
large refunds. Taxpayers should
choose carefully when hiring a tax
preparer. As the saying goes, if it
sounds too good to be true, it
probably is. No matter who
prepares the return, the taxpayer
is ultimately responsible for its
accuracy.
4. Credit Counseling Agencies.
Taxpayers should be careful with
credit counseling organizations
that claim they can fix credit
ratings, push debt payment
agreements or charge high fees,
monthly service charges or
mandatory “contributions” that
may add to debt. The IRS Tax
Exempt and Government Entities
Division has made auditing credit
counseling organizations a priority
because some of these tax-exempt
organizations, which are intended
to provide education to lowincome customers with debt
problems, are charging debtors
large fees, while providing little or
no counseling.
5. “Claim of Right” Doctrine.
In this scheme, a taxpayer files a
return and attempts to take a
deduction equal to the entire
amount of his or her wages. The
promoter advises the taxpayer to
label the deduction as “a necessary
expense for the production of
income” or “compensation for
personal services actually
rendered.”
This so-called deduction is
based on a misinterpretation of the
Internal Revenue Code and has no
basis in law.
6. “No Gain” Deduction.
Similar to “Claim of Right,” filers
attempt to eliminate their entire
adjusted gross income (AGI) by
deducting it on Schedule A. The
filer lists his or her AGI under the
Schedule A section labeled “Other
Miscellaneous Deductions” and
attaches a statement to the return,
referring to court documents and
including the words “No Gain
Realized.”
7. Corporation Sole.
Since September 2004, the
Department of Justice has obtained
six injunctions against promoters
of this scheme and filed
complaints against 11 others.
Participants
apply
for
incorporation under the pretext of
being a “bishop” or “overseer” of
a one-person, phony religious
organization or society with the
idea that this entitles the individual
to exemption from federal income
taxes as a nonprofit, religious
organization.
When used as intended,
Corporation Sole statutes enable
religious leaders to separate
themselves legally from the
control and ownership of church
assets. But the rules have been
twisted at seminars where
taxpayers are charged fees of
$1,000 or more and incorrectly
told that Corporation Sole laws
provide a “legal” way to escape
paying federal income taxes, child
support and other personal debts.
8. Identity Theft.
It pays to be choosy when it comes
to disclosing personal information.
Identity thieves have used stolen
personal data to access financial
accounts, run up charges on credit
cards and apply for new loans. The
IRS is aware of several identity
theft scams involving taxes. If
taxpayers have any doubt whether
a contact from the IRS is authentic,
they can call 1-800-829-1040 to
confirm it.
9.
Abuse of Charitable
Organizations and Deductions.
The IRS has observed an increase
in the use of tax-exempt
organizations to improperly shield
income or assets from taxation.
This can occur, for example,
when a taxpayer moves assets or
income to a tax-exempt supporting
organization or donor-advised
fund but maintains control over the
assets or income, thereby
obtaining a tax deduction without
transferring a commensurate
benefit to charity.
A “contribution” of a historic
facade easement to a tax-exempt
conservation organization is
another example. In many cases,
local historic preservation laws
already prohibit alteration of the
home’s facade, making the
contributed easement superfluous.
Even if the facade could be
altered, the deduction claimed for
the easement contribution may far
exceed the easement’s impact on
the value of the property.
10. Offshore Transactions.
Despite a crackdown on the
practice by the IRS and state tax
agencies, individuals continue to
try to avoid US taxes by illegally
hiding income in offshore bank
and brokerage accounts or using
offshore credit cards, wire
transfers, foreign trusts, employee
leasing schemes, private annuities
or life insurance to do so. The IRS,
along with the tax agencies of US
states and possessions, continues
to aggressively pursue taxpayers
and promoters involved in such
abusive transactions.
11. Zero Return.
Promoters instruct taxpayers to
enter all zeros on their federal
income tax filings. In a twist on
this scheme, filers enter zero
income, report their withholding
and then write “nunc pro tunc”—
Latin for “now for then”—on the
return.
12. Employment Tax Evasion.
The IRS has seen a number of
illegal schemes that instruct
employers not to withhold federal
income tax or other employment
taxes from wages paid to their
employees.
Such advice is based on an
incorrect interpretation of Section
861 and other parts of the tax law
and has been refuted in court.
Recent cases have resulted in
criminal convictions, and the
courts have issued injunctions
against more than a dozen persons
ordering them to stop promoting
the scheme.
Employer participants can also
be held responsible for back
payments of employment taxes,
plus penalties and interest. It is
worth noting that employees who
have nothing withheld from their
wages are still responsible for
payment of their personal taxes.
The IRS removed four scams
from the Dirty Dozen this year:
slavery reparations, improper
home-based businesses, the
Americans with Disabilities Act
and EITC dependent sharing. The
agency has noticed declines in
activity in some of these schemes.
But taxpayers should remain wary
because the IRS has seen old
scams resurface or evolve.
Moreover, the IRS reminds
taxpayers to be vigilant about cons
that may not be on the Dirty Dozen
list. New tax scams or schemes
routinely pop up, especially
around tax time.

decorative twist, like an Art Deco

10. Paraísos Fiscales.
A pesar de la ofensiva lanzada por
el IRS en contra de ésta práctica,
conjuntamente con las agencias
estatales, hay personas que siguen
tratando de evadir los impuestos
federales escondiendo sus ingresos
ilegalmente en bancos y otras
instituciones financieras, cuentas
de corretaje fuera del país,
transferencia electrónica de
fondos,
fideicomisos foráneos, tarjetas de
crédito foráneas, esquemas de
arrendamiento de empleados,
pensiones o seguros de vida y otros
arreglos.
El IRS conjuntamente con otras
agencias de impuestos de los
estados y posesiones de EEUU
continúa
investigando
y
persiguiendo agresivamente a los
contribuyentes y los promotores de
estas transacciones abusivas.
11. Declaraciones de Cero.
Los promotores de este tipo de
estafa
instruyen
a
los
contribuyentes para que escriban
ceros en toda su declaración
federal de impuestos.
Un cambio recién en esta estafa
incluye reportar cero de ingresos,
reportar sus retenciones y luego
escribir “nunc pro trunc” en latín,
significando “Hoy por antes” en la
declaración.
12. Evasión de Impuesto
Patronal.
El IRS ha visto varios esquemas
de estos planes de estafas que
instruyen a empleadores a no
retener el impuesto federal u otros
impuestos debidos de la nómina
pagada a sus empleados.
Estas estafas están basadas en la
interpretación errónea de la
sección 861 y otras secciones de
la ley tributaria que siempre han
sido rechazadas en las cortes.
En casos recientes han resultado
en convicciones criminales de los
promotores y, al mismo tiempo, las
cortes han ordenado a más de una
docena de promotores que dejen
de promover esta estafa.
Empleadores que participen en
estas estafas pueden ser hechos
responsables a pagar las
retenciones y pagos retrazados
más multas e intereses. Hay que
recordar que los empleados a
quienes no se les hacen estas
retenciones aun son responsables
por el pago de sus impuestos
personales.
El IRS ha removido cuatro
esquemas de estafas de la lista de
la ‘Docena de Estafas Mayores’
este año:
Recuperación por Esclavitud,
Negocios de Hogar Indebidos,
El Acta de Americanos
Incapacitados y el Préstamos de
Dependientes Para Efectos del
Crédito por Ingreso de Trabajo.
La agencia ha notado una baja
en el número de estas estafas pero
los contribuyentes deben seguir
alertas porque estas viejas estafas
tienden a revivir y aun tomar otras
formas.
Además, el IRS les recuerda
que deben mantenerse alertas de
otras estafas que no aparecen en
la lista de Docena de Estafas.
Nuevos planes y esquemas de
estafas surgen continuamente,
especialmente durante la
temporada de impuestos.

contribuyentes evitar estafas.

Recuerdos: Another racist professor

Colorado State University - Pueblo
I am so proud of her. That lady has courage beyond her years.
I am speaking of Virginia Watson and I have added her letter of complaint about a racist college
professor so you can read for yourself what she says happened in a Forensic Science class that she
is enrolled in.
I went to a number of colleges in my life. The first was Eastern New Mexico University in
Portales, New Mexico where I acquired a B.S. degree and began a career in teaching. During
those years, I too ran into racist professors.
But I didn’t say anything. I thought that I had to take care of my family and I had to complete
my degree and that I had better keep my mouth shut.
Years later, after I had earned my PhD and had achieved success in my historical field, I ran into
one of those racist professors. I was at the Santa Fe Trail Conference in Hutchinson, Kansas and
I was a major speaker on the program.
I saw Dr. Ira Ihde and I went up to him and I said, “Dr. Ihde, I want to thank you for being so
bad, because you inspired me to get into my field.”
Yeah I know, that wasn’t a nice thing to say to an old retired professor, but I remembered all of
his racism and his distorted view of southwestern history that I took a personal satisfaction in
doing it.
But, if I would have had the courage of a Victoria Watson, I would have confronted him than
and perhaps generations of students who followed me would not have been fed his nonsense. I am
so proud of her.

March 3, 2005
To the Dean of Colorado State University Pueblo:
My name is Victoria A. Watson and I am a current freshman this semester at CSU-Pueblo. The
reason for this letter is to bring to your attention a very serious occurrence regarding a faculty
member.
On Thursday, March 2nd, I attended Forensic Anthropology taught by Dr. Dan Forsyth. At the
last twenty minutes of class, he proceeded to end our lesson to discuss a rather racial and insulting
matter. He completely lashed out about the American system giving sympathy to us lazy, bitter
Mexicans who don’t deserve to be here. May I point out that he did not use “illegal” or
“immigrant,” he said “Mexicans.” I would like to point out that he has also blatantly thrown
around the word “nigger” in our lessons.
I am a minority myself and am completely disgusted and appalled. Racial and political opinions
have nothing to do with anthropology. I am furious knowing that my $2,000 tuition is paying for
this man to ramble about how he thinks Mexicans should go back to Mexico and how we Mexicans
have raped the American system. Most importantly, this man had no point. Had it have been
some sort of healthy debate I would have humored him, but instead he completed insulted every
minority in the class with his ignorance. Not only that but he was yelling and using excessive
profanity.
After listening to his senselessness for 10 minutes, I got up to leave the class, where he proceed
to point at me in front of the class and yell “Hey Screw You!” I would like to let you know that I
am the only Mexican in the class so to the other students, this incident really meant nothing. Now
you and I [k]now that there are very well respected Hispanic alumni, staff, and partnerships here at
CSU that would seriously disagree and be outraged by these statements. I pay a lot of money to
attend this institution that I thought was a place of respect and learning. I feel that his actions
should not go unpunished.
I bring this to your attention now so that something can be done. I would like to express to you
the resentment I feel. If no action is taken, I will take this matter further and/ or public. I hope that
CSU-Pueblo does not promote this type of hatred.
Thank you for your time.
Victoria A. Watson,
