Very o en the story of Mary and Martha, recounted in today’s Gospel, is used as a metaphor for the two aspects of our Chris an life: Prayer and the ac ve ministry. St. Francis wrote a short Rule for the Hermitage based on this passage. Two friars could go off into the hill country to live out the Rule. For a few days, one friar would be Martha and the other friar would be Mary. While the friar who was in contempla on, (Mary), the other friar (Martha) provided food and drink and served the other’s needs. Then, they would switch roles. We have such a hermitage in the hills above San Juan Bau sta, California and St. Francis Retreat House. Most of us do not have this op on but all of us can put the spirit of St. Francis into prac ce. We might think we are too busy, but we need to make me to “sit beside the Lord at his feet” to pray and learn more about our spiritual journey. We also must imitate Martha and “be busy” about the works of God. Prayer and work—they go together. This week on Tuesday evening, we will have our discernment workshop to provide informa on about the nature of the Parish Pastoral Council and, if you wish, the opportunity to be selected by the Pastor and Pastoral Council to serve on the pastoral council for a three-year period. Please see the announcement on pg. #4 of this bulle n for further details. Come and see! In closing, I would like to invite you to our uproariously funny play, “Late Nite Catechism” on August 4th. It’s a deligh ul show sure to bring loads of laughter and prizes, too! For cket informa on please see today’s bulle n. “What are you wai ng for? You definitely don’t want to be late for class!” Join us for a farewell party in honor of F .A on Sunday, July 31, 2016, St. Francis Hall, at 1:15pm SACRAMENT OF RECONCILIATION Next Saturday, July 23, 2016, the Sacrament of Reconcilia on will be moved to the priest’s office. A NEW PARISH MINISTRY IS BORN! “THE PARISH COMMUNITY LIFE COMMITTEE” (aka Hospitality Ministry) Hospitality and a welcoming atmosphere should be the hallmark of every parish. Visitors tell us that we are a very welcoming community of faith. The Pastoral Council and Stewardship Commi ee have ini ated a new commi ee to help foster a greater awareness of hospitality by establishing a Parish Community Life Commi ee whose func on is to enhance our parish life by welcoming newcomers and visitors and by fostering opportuni es to celebrate our life together through recepons, par es and other social ac vi es. If you are a people person and like to plan social events, then this new venture is for you! If you would like to learn more about this new venture, please call Claudia LaBarge at 760-458-5937 and/or Marta Werner at 760-724-7393. All are invited to a special informa onal mee ng on Wed., August 10, 2016 at 7:00 p.m. in the Parish Dining Rm. Help us welcome, connect and foster friendships in our Mission Parish! COLLECTIONS - WEEK OF JULY 1-9 Actual Budgeted Under/Over Total Collec ons $31,434.00 $32,288.10 Love, MYTHS ABOUT MENTAL HEALTH Myth: It is the parents' fault if children suffer from mental health problems. Reality: Mental health disorders in children are caused by biology, environment, or a combina on of both. They can be caused by gene cs or biological factors such as a chemical imbalance or prenatal exposure to alcohol or drugs. They can also be the result of abusive or neglec ul treatment or stressful events. For help, please call the Parish Mental Health Ministry at 760/757-3250 ext. 203 -$854.10 On July 1st we began a new fiscal year which means a new budget. Our total expenses last year were in excess of 1.6 million dollars - it takes a lot to keep this large parish running! In order to meet all of our basic needs we MUST meet our budgeted collec on income each week. For the first week of July our goal for collec ons was $32,288.10. As you can see, we came up short by $854.10. As you prayerfully consider your contribu ons each week, please keep in mind that a couple of extra dollars from each family would have easily created a surplus with which we can do other things besides "just pay our u lity bills". This is YOUR parish - please help where you can. Thank you! July 17, 2016 - 16th Sunday In Ordinary Time| 3 STEWARDSHIP THOUGHT CONSTRUCTION UPDATE: Martha and Mary are the focus of this weekend’s Gospel, which abounds with rich themes about hospitality, service, and finding the right balance between ac on and prayerful a en on to the Lord. Chris ans who are good stewards of their faith life realize that if they are too busy to enjoy peaceful, private me with the Lord, then something is out of balance in their spirituality. If we make me for Mass, but then carry on with our busy schedules without prayer, medita on and reflec on, we are missing out. If we find ourselves anxious and harried by life’s rou nes, could it be a sign that something in our spiritual life needs some serious a en on? The me has arrived and work will now begin on the much needed improvements on our driveway located on the east side of the Parish. This improvement will be a long me fix to years of problems. We have entered into an agreement with Beazer Homes to allow our driveway to be used as temporary access for the neighbors behind us. Our agreement states that this driveway will be open to traffic headed to and from Chapter Way (soon to be improved as well). Because of the increased traffic count, we will not allow any parking on the driveway while it is open. The agreement will terminate when Academy Road is rebuilt. The developer is very mo vated to finish Academy Road as quickly as possible. Once Academy is completed, we will once again close down the Parish driveway. Please be pa ent while we go through a few growing pains. Please contact me with any ques ons or comments, Lee Bickford, Facility Manager at (760) 547-0747 (direct) RELIGIOUS EDUCATION REGISTRATION OPEN UNTIL AUG. 28th Registration for Religious Education requires Parish registration. ¡Ven a ver! ¡Defini vamente no quieren llegar tarde a clase!"
