Christ, the Good Shepherd Parish Cristo, el Buen Pastor 394 Tenney Avenue • Campbell, Ohio 44405 • (330)755-4141 • (330)755-1367 (fax) • (330)755-3633 (Español) A Parish of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Youngstown The Mission of Christ, the Good Shepherd Parish is to celebrate the Sacraments, share our heritage and traditions, and support one another in living and sharing our faith in this community and throughout the world. January 4, 2015 Epiphany of Our Lord PARTNERS IN THE PROMISE As a society, during these days we can be in something of a “postpartum” depression. Our celebrations of Christmas and the New Year are over, and after today many of us will put away the decorations and the last visible remnants of the celebrations of the past weeks. The apostle Paul today uses the expression “partners in the promise.” This is an uplifting phrase for us to reflect upon, and to think of as our own calling in these days following the birth of the Lord. What is this promise? We can find it in the gifts the magi bring: it is a promise of being a royal priesthood (gold), a holy nation (frankincense), a people set apart for self-giving (myrrh). We find more of the promise in Isaiah—a light shines upon us! In the psalm we know a promise of a world of flowering justice, profound peace, the poor rescued, pity for the lowly and the poor. This is the promise; and one of the best ways for us to lift ourselves out of any possible low spirits we may be suffering is to live out our partnership in this promise each and every day. Let us begin the New Year with prayer and fellowship! This week, we welcome Gene Kennedy to the maintenance staff. Without him, there was only going to be two guys on maintenance in January. So, now we have three. Some words from Pope Francis: God chose to be born in a human family, which He Himself formed. He formed it in a forgotten village of the periphery of the Roman Empire. Not at Rome, which was the capital of the Empire, not in a great city, but in an almost invisible periphery, in fact, rather ill-famed. The Gospels recall this, almost as a way of saying: “Can anything good come out of Nazareth?”. Perhaps, in many parts of the world, we still speak like this, when we hear the name of some peripheral place of a large city. Well, in fact from there, from that periphery of the great Empire, the most holy and good story began -- that of Jesus among men. And this family was there. The family of Nazareth commits us to rediscover the vocation and mission of the family, of every family. And, as happened in those 30 years at Nazareth, so it can also happen for us: to make love and not hatred normal, to make mutual help common, not indifference and enmity. The preparation and celebration of the Nativity invites us to consider how God’s original gift of the family was taken up and confirmed in the mystery of the Incarnation. God bless you, Fr. Que Dios te bendiga, P. Conoboy Epiphany Celebration TODAY, January 4, 1:30pm at the Palermo Center. Christ, the Good Shepherd will provide the main course.
