El tren Hiram Bingham
de Orient Express es
la forma más lujosa de
llegar a Machu Picchu.
Un viaje al son del

Mientras el tren avanza rápido por las vías
férreas, acompañando al río Urubamba,
admiro desde el vagón observatorio, el último, los múltiples vestigios prehispánicos
que tachonan el paisaje. Aquí y allá asoman terrazas escalonadas en las laderas
de las montañas, construidas cientos de
años atrás para el cultivo agrícola por las
culturas indígenas del Perú y en uso todavía. La locomotora arrastra los escasos
pero lujosos vagones azules y prosigue
incansable su camino, cortando el viento.
Sin embargo, yo soy ajeno a esa marcha.
Estoy distraído con el paisaje, bebiendo un
pisco sour (coctel de aguardiente de uva
peruano con un toque de limón) en un vaso
de barro decorado, y escuchando música
andina tocada en vivo. El paraje transmite
grandeza y el tren desprende aroma de lujo.
El ferrocarril toma su nombre del explorador Hiram Bingham, quien dio a conocer
al mundo la existencia de las ruinas incas
de Machu Picchu, aunque estas ya habían
sido descubiertas por agricultores peruanos años antes de la llegada del estadounidense. Hasta allá subió el expedicionario
a lomo de mula, en un viaje que tenía mucho de aventura y poco de comodidad
y esplendor. Nada que ver con el Hiram
Bingham tren.

Como existe la posibilidad de abordar
el ferrocarril en su estación inicial, Poroy
(unas tres horas y media de trayecto, saliendo a las nueve de la mañana), o en una
intermedia, Ollantaytambo (hora y media y,
si madrugas, incluso puedes pasear por
las impresionantes ruinas arqueológicas
del mismo nombre antes de subir al tren),
el recorrido se hace extrañamente corto. La
atención, desde que uno llega al andén, es
exquisita, igual que el mimo con el que se
trata al pasajero.
Tras la recepción, a pie de tren, se acompaña al viajero hasta su asiento, alrededor
de una mesa preparada con una sugestiva
gastronomía. Y entonces la vida en el Hiram Bingham se torna colectiva, un espacio
para admirar el paisaje pero también para
conocer a otros pasajeros y dejarse llevar
por la conversación, regada con un buen
vino y alimentada por un manjar gourmet.
El Hiram Bingham devora kilómetros dejando a un lado y otro fértiles campos y
adentrándose entre montañas escarpadas,
cortadas de forma tosca por el paso del
tiempo y la mano del hombre (en este caso,
para instalar las vías). Es el desfiladero del
río. Se desciende rápido, pero si uno se fija
bien, a la altura de Coriwaynachina se observa parte del antiguo Camino del Inca
que unía Cusco con la Amazonia. Luego,
al pasar a un lado se advierte una fina
escalera en la roca que asciende y, si se
presta atención, la vista seguro se topará
con algún turista tratando de subir hasta el
Santuario. El Urubamba, a esa altura, corre
frenético, golpeando contra las rocas de su
cauce, como rivalizando en velocidad con el
tren. Sigue un túnel, un fugaz momento de
oscuridad, y un nuevo paisaje que compite
en belleza con el anterior.
Evocador y gastronómico
El interior del Hiram Bingham trae a la memoria, con su decoración, los majestuosos
carros pullman, mismos que a su vez nos
trasladan a la época más glamorosa del
ferrocarril. Maderas oscuras, pulidas y brillantes; ornamentos dorados y una decoración clásica y acogedora acompañan el
viaje, pero destacan sobre todo en el trayecto de regreso, ya anocheciendo, cuando
se encienden las luces de las lámparas.
Una vez que te acostumbras a la rapidez del tren y sus movimientos oscilantes,
es fácil recorrer los dos coches comedor, el vagón bar, el carro observatorio y,
como hice yo, el coche cocina, donde un
equipo comandado por un chef elabora
las delicatessen que luego son saboreadas
por los pasajeros.
Y hablando de comida, es imprescindible
hablar de los deliciosos platillos elaborados con productos frescos de la estación,
que aparecen como por arte de magia en
la mesa. Posiblemente el hecho de quedar
absorto admirando el paisaje por las amplias ventanas, o sumirse en una intensa
charla con el vecino de enfrente, contribuyen a esa sensación. A la ida, la cocina del
Hiram Bingham ofrece un brunch de cocina tradicional peruana, por ejemplo: tamal
de maíz con aceite de oliva y salsa de tomate pera (en la región lo conocen como
tamarillo), asado de lomo de alpaca con
compota de bayas de saúco, o bien canelones de espinacas, quinua y pollo con
salsa cremosa de tomate. La quinua, por
cierto, es un cultivo típicamente andino.
Este cereal, altamente rico en proteínas, es
muy habitual en la gastronomía peruana.
En el viaje de regreso, ya por la noche, se
sirve una cena completa de tres tiempos:
para empezar quizás una sugerente sopa
de calabaza aromatizada, y luego un medallón de lomo de res con polenta de maíz
con queso y setas, o un filete de trucha
salmonada con salsa de pimienta rosa. Los
nombres seducen, el aroma enamora y el
gusto fascina. Las opciones se ajustan al
paladar de cada quien y a nadie dejan indiferente. De hecho, si no fuera por el traqueteo, me atrevería a afirmar que estoy en
un restaurante muy exclusivo de alguna
ciudad. Por supuesto, todo ello regado con
deliciosos vinos sudamericanos y finalizado
con un postre a elegir. Yo adoré el pastel
de queso y fruta de la pasión con papaya
arequipeña sobre un coulis de fresa.
El sitio arqueológico
A la llegada a la estación de Aguas Calientes o Machu Picchu Pueblo, al viajero le espera un laberinto de tiendas de souvenirs.

Sin embargo, el tiempo apremia para visitar las ruinas. A los pasajeros del Hiram
Bingham se nos separa en dos grupos y
cada uno sigue a su guía durante la visita
al Santuario de Machu Picchu.
Pero primero hay que coronar la montaña.
Por eso, cruzando un puente, el servicio de
Orient–Express continúa y abordamos los
autobuses que, zigzagueando por una estrecha carretera de terracería, ascienden en
una media hora los 400 metros de altura que
nos separan del Santuario y llegan hasta la
cima. Durante el trayecto tengo tiempo suficiente de evocar una última imagen del hoy
perdido Imperio inca, del pueblo que retó
el vértigo y alcanzó el cielo. Arriba espera el
paraíso de los incas, la ciudad inacabada:
Machu Picchu, justo en la hora perfecta,
cuando la mayoría de los turistas ya debe
regresar a su morada.
Por delante hay mucho que conocer antes de iniciar el descenso en autobús, alrededor de las 16.30 horas. Eso nos da tres
horas y media para el recorrido y tomar el té
en el Machu Picchu Sanctuary Lodge Hotel,
incluido en el precio del billete de tren.
Pero hay algo aún mejor para disfrutar, casi en exclusiva, el Santuario y saborearlo con los sentidos de la vista y el
oído cuando la aglomeración de turistas ha
desaparecido. Eso significa que si te alojas
en el Machu Picchu Sanctuary Lodge Hotel,
a las puertas de la ciudadela inca, tendrás
el privilegio de emocionarte con los misterios que regala la naturaleza de noche y
contemplar el amanecer sobre las antiguas
piedras, además de que podrás recorrer
detenidamente las ruinas. Mi recomendación es reservar con tiempo porque las habitaciones son escasas, aunque también
encontrarás alojamiento cinco estrellas y
con encanto en Machu Picchu Pueblo.

No dudo que la montaña y sus ruinas continuarán allí en un futuro cercano. El tren
espera a los pies de la montaña y también
su personal que, leyéndome la mente, me
entrega una toalla húmeda, refrescante y
aromática, que me renueva y prepara para
el regreso a la ciudad de Cusco.
El último tren en abandonar el lugar es el
