We know how we would like people to act with mercy toward us, but what is mercy to a family member, our coworker, or the person we walk by every day? For each of us, there are particular things that are meaningful to us and speak to our need for mercy. In spite of these differences, we are still able to minister to one another, because the love of God surpasses our differences and draws us all into the one Body of Christ. In order to show others the love of God through acts of mercy and compassion, we need to be attentive to their needs and the way in which God is working in their lives. 1. Volunteer some of your time this month at a place where you will meet a variety of people—for instance, a local community center, a food bank, or a homeless shelter. Though everyone might have different needs, all are searching for the love and mercy of God. Reflect on the way your need for God's love is similar to their need for God's love. 2. Spend some time talking with a younger or older relative or friend. Sometimes we ignore those whose perspective on life is different or far removed from ours (being much younger or much older than us). Listen to what is important to them, recognizing God's love acting in their life and the way in which you can best act with mercy and compassion toward them. - United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (http://www.usccb.org) TOGETHER IN MISSION UPDATE Goal $49,600.00 Pledged $57,321.00 Paid $51,811.00 THANK YOU FOR YOUR SUPPORT IT’S DONUT SUNDAY!! BACKPACKS OF LOVE As you have heard for the last few weeks, we are involved in gathering backpacks filled with school supplies for 200 needy children right here in The Sunland/Tujunga community. It’s sad to think of any child feeling left out because parents cannot afford to get them what they need for school. This is a real problem in today’s economy and we want to help. WE NEED YOUR HELP TO ACCOMPLISH THIS CHALLENGE School days return the week of August 15th, time is short and we’re not even half way to our goal. WE HAVE EXTENDED OUR DEADLINE TO AUGUST 10TH Also, we have received a break on the cost of backpacks from “Dickies”(next to Giamela’s on Foothill) Mention Marie Blue’s name and they will cost ONLY $9.00 – NO TAX. IT’S COMING…… Bigger and better BULLETIN WATCH FOR IT! SAFEGUARDING THE CHILDREN The negative consequences of underage drinking are more widespread and serious than previously know. Research shows that alcohol can change the way the brain works and could lead to long-term consequences. Many more dangers of underage drinking are immediate, including alcohol poisoning, physical assault and poor decision making. You can help protect your children from the risks associated with drinking by maintaining open communication, and by expressing a clear, consistent message that underage drinking is unacceptable.
