Irene Kopelman Cordoba, Argentina, 1974. Lives and works in Amsterdam, Netherlands. I read my practice within the notion of models. I use the term models as the instance of materialization between the thinking process and the word. I am inspired by this concept, which is used by most of the disciplines of knowledge. Many areas of studies generate models with the aim of granting access to and subsequently organizing the world (for instance models of the planets in astronomy, chemical models in order to represent the atoms, archeological models to represent lost civilizations and even abstract, but not formal, models as it would be in the case of mathematical or economical models). I hope to make evident that it is impossible to enclose the complexity of things in departmentally tight categories: During the 19th century, a scientific project needed to force things into categories in order to visualize the rules to which they respond and organize the world in a logical system. This was a fundamental process to schematize how we look at things and simplify it to the extreme, thus overlooking any singularities. I aim to reopen the category of sameness and, by means of representation, I hope to make evident that it is impossible to enclose the complexity of things in departmentally tight categories. I wish to explore the link in between two sources, the direct contact with the landscape and the mediated contact with it via the museum collections. I am keen to search for a way to put together these elements, working towards a generation of a narrative, which will emerge when all these components coexist. This dynamic of difference and repetition is the central axis of my work. Irene Kopelman (1974) W 139’s dig. The W139 BUilding in Amsterdam has been undergoing renovation over the last few years. A group of artists have been invited to make site specific works in the space while the building is under construction. The works were shown in format of a publication when the building reopened in December 2006. On November 2005, I collected material from the holes that existed in the space as a consequence of the construction. Later on, I mapped the samples in my studio. Each piece is mapped from three points of view (front / side / back) The drawings are made in scale one to one with the originals. The number of collected pieces were 50:10 from each of the 5 holes. Irene Kopelman (1974) Latitude 2007 The work Latitude is my contribution to a large-scale project organized by “Uqbar” entitled “A for Alibi”. In “A for Alibi” a group of eight artists were invited to research and develop works, basing themselves in a collection of historical scientific instruments of the Museum of the University of Utrecht. The project was developed over a period of 18 months, during which the artists had access to the collection, and to technical and theoretical consultations by the museum staff. The project concluded with an exhibition in the center for contemporary art De Appel, in Amsterdam and a publication. During more than a year of work in the Museum of the University of Utrecht, I observed and studied different aspects of the collection; the items of collection along with the themes linked to it; themes related to modes of representation and observation, looking at historical instruments that were used for seeing, organizing and communicating diverse aspects of reality. For the exhibition at De Appel, I used an expositive method commonly used in museums of natural science; the diorama. The beauty of the landscapes represented in these dioramas lies in the desire to understand a distant landscape and subsequently convert it into models that we can possess and admire in our local museums. “Latitud” is a triptic that explores, through various modes of representation, this notion of landscape and the desire to examine and possess a distant landscape and imaginary. The piece does not attempt to literally recreate one of the dioramas but rather to dismantle the idea of the diorama by redoubling and dismembering the elements that would structure it. Hauy by Journy, 1802. Teylers collection, Haarlem’ La serie de modelos de vidrio parte de: ‘Album de Mineralogie’ by M. Le J.D. Kurr, Paris, 1849. Teylers Museum, Haarlem. Harris Teall, London, 1888. Teylers Museum, Haarlem. Y las maquetas de paisajes ( de goma) están bastadas en el libro de Hamilton, William Campi Phlegraei Observations on the Volcanoes of the Two Siciles. Naples. 1776. Teylers Museum, Haarlem Irene Kopelman (1974) Lógicas desviadas 2007 Lógicas desviadas emerges as an investigation on the forms of representation that have been used in the history of the sciences to describe nature. During this process, I dedicated myself to looking and collecting material from science museum collections. I also looked at forms of cataloging, ordering and archiving while focusing on researching scientific illustrations; forms of representing crystals, rocks, mountains, maps, ideas on perspective and, sometimes, going back into time, to catalogues of monsters and illustrations linked to mythological tales and to forms of looking at nature previous to the modern methods. Most of the material was collected from the library of the museum of the history of the sciences “Teylers” found in the city of Haarlem, in the Netherlands. Over the course of more than a year, I collected visual materials in the library that I later decided to use to reconstruct diverse series based on the visual information that I had found in the old books. The intention was to parse out the visual information found in the scientific illustrations of the 18th and 19th centuries and based on them, reconstruct the pieces. For each one of the series I selected different materials that varied from glass, clay, paper, prints, rubber, and watercolors. For example, the series of sculptures on paper (crystals) is based on the book R.J. Hauy by Journy, 1802. Teylers collection, Haarlem. The series of glass models is based on the: Album de Mineralogie by M. Le J.D. Kurr, Paris, 1849. Teylers Museum, Haarlem. The watercolors are based on British Petrography by J.J. Harris Teall, London, 1888. Teylers Museum, Haarlem. And the rubber landscape models are based on the book of Hamilton, William Campi Phlegraei entitled Observations on the Volcanoes of the Two Siciles, Naples. 1776. Teylers Museum, Haarlem. Irene Kopelman (1974) Scale: 1:2.5 2008 292 Fotografías | 292 Photographies Medidas variables | Variable dimensions. (Inv# IK Carpeta 2) Exhibited: OutLine, Amsterdam, 2008. Irene Kopelman Scale: 1:2.5 2008 (1974) In the empty white cube of the gallery, Irene Kopelman has taken as starting point the texture of the walls’ surface, dealing with the exhibition space as a potential landscape. She has mapped out the walls in an architectural grid and reproduced the entire surface scale 1:1 using the technique of frottage. On the frottages the architectural surfaces come out as images that resemble landscapes seen from the sky. Rubbing over the walls and tracing every single tiny detail of its texture, the white emptiness is suddenly turned to an intense and crowded image that invites the eye to explore differences and repetitions in its complex patterns. Kopelman has subsequently photographed square by square the entire grid of the frottages, this time scale 1:2.5 and then returned the new photographic images back in visual and conceptual encounter with the original places at the gallery walls. Thus the entire visual representation is brought back to its original architectural and physical space. For all the precision and objectivity of thereproduction techniques [the grid, the frottage, the photography] the successive transfers give birth to images that evoke complex subjective associations. Associations that move between perceptions, categories and representation methods of architecture and landscape, emptiness and fullness, space and matter, the concrete and the abstract, the tactile and the visual. Irene Kopelman (1974) For UBX Expression 2008 Papel, vitrinas, dibujos, contenedores de vidrio con cuentas | Paper, displays, drawings, glass containers with beads. Medidas variables | Variable dimensions. (Inv# IK Carpeta 3) Exhibited: Apex Art, Nueva York. Irene Kopelman (1974) For UBX Expression 2008 For UBX Expression is the result of a working period at the Entomological Collection in the University of Amsterdam (UvA). The work focuses on the morphology in butterfly patterns. It basically consists in five series of drawings, pen on cardboard (8 × 8 cm) of butterfly wing pattern (always the upper wing to the left). The piece focuses on the subtle difference in each wing and in seen how those wings which are represented as schemas in books don’t ever respond to the schema but there are as individual as the amount of butterflies flying and collected in the world. The glass pieces depart from a device which I find in the depot of the university museum in Utrecht which was used for pedagogical purposes in teaching the genetically organization in biology. Basically you have those spheres (in different percentages in each container), you turn the container up and down and the spheres always appear distributed differently. In the context of the exhibition ‘A Fantasy for Allan Kaprow’ and based on Kaprow’s Meditation Pieces (1981), I travelled across the White Desert in Egypt and finally chose one stone from there which, on returning to my studio, I drew repetitively every day from the same angle for over a month. (Inv# IK Carpeta 5) Exhibited: Centro Cultural Montehermoso, Vitoria, España. Irene Kopelman (1974) The Levy’s Flight 2009 The Levy’s Flight is an installation which took form after a research visit to the ‘Hawai‘i Volcanoes National Park’ in October 2008. During the visit I realized a series of drawings, sketches for a series of sculptures and a huge number of photographs. Back in the studio, the material underwent a series of conceptual filters till it reached the form in which was presented at the Montehermoso. All the pieces had as departing point elements of that landscape. The Puzzle departs from the tracing of a fragment of the volcanic surface, where the lava is older and therefore cracks and breaks. The reliefs reference fragments or crusts which stick out from the usually flat volcanic formations. All the pieces attempt to trace back something of that landscape in an almost romantic attempt to comprehend it. This strategy recalls the travelers from past centuries in their attempt to represent, organize and bring back to their homeland discoveries made of far away territories.
