LA MEDIDA DE LA MERCED
“The End Is Near, Part One”
“El Fin Está Cerca, Primera Parte”
As the liturgical year comes toward its
conclusion, the Gospels and other Sunday
Scriptures take a decidedly eschatological tone.
That is, the Scriptures we read at Mass talk about
“the end of time,” the “Great Tribulation,” and
“coming in glory.” All of these Scripture passages
from Daniel to Hebrews to the Gospel passages
speak of darkness, uprisings, and the fulfillment
of God’s Kingdom. What we often miss as we
read of the terrible upcoming tragedies is the new order, the
great peace and the glory of God which always triumphs over
evil and the calamities that are set to befall us.
Human nature has two basic reactions to the threatened
calamities of the end of time: fear and disbelief. Many are
afraid of what the end will bring. Many more capitalize on this
fear and preach or predict that everything around us is a sign of
the end of the world. Wars, hurricanes, violence and political
turmoil are all sure signs that we do not have long before Jesus
comes to judge us! Others, scoff at the idea of an eternal
judgment, a just king, knowing that many of the things which
frighten us are a part of the natural order of the universe. Those
of little faith not only refute that the world is ending, but they
seek to attack religion itself for instilling fear in society.
Neither fear and disbelief nor faith and keeping watch will
have any effect on the end of the world or just the end of the
human race. Just as neither Creationists nor Evolutionists truly
understand God’s creative power, so neither scientists nor
fundamentalists can understand what the end of the world
really means from a Christian point of view. St. Mark’s Gospel
gives us the real insight into what is happening as our world
hastens (or crawls) to its eventual destruction.
Jesus tells us to learn a lesson from the fig tree. This is not
the fig tree He cursed for not bearing fruit (although there is a
lesson to be learned there as well). No, the lesson He wants us
to learn is that there are clear signs when the fig tree is growing,
bringing forth new branches and preparing to bear much fruit.
Yes, the branches are tender, the sprouts are small, but Summer
is near! In the same way, the end of the world, as Jesus speaks
of it, is not about destruction as it is about the growth of God’s
Kingdom, a Kingdom where peace and justice, truth and
freedom will prevail for all people. When Christ is at the gates,
this is not the time to be afraid nor to doubt because He comes
to bring creation to its fulfillment in the glory of God the
Father. The coming of Christ brings a new stage in evolution as
Pierre Teilhard de Chardin would say, a Christian evolution that
will bring humanity to a new level of understanding the love of
God and His Divine Plan. Jesus in Mark’s Gospel tells us that
His generation will not pass away until the branch of humanity
has become tender and the shoots of a new age filled with great
power and glory have begun to sprout--the Resurrection and
Descent of the Holy Spirit!
Our Holy Father, Pope Francis I, is calling us to enter more
fully into the new age which is found only in Christ’s love. The
upcoming Holy Year of Mercy is one where we are called to see
and be the face of our merciful God so that no one is afraid or
without His embrace.
Como el año litúrgico llega a su conclusión, los Evangelios y
otras escrituras del Domingo toman un tono decididamente
escatológico. Es decir, las escrituras que leemos en Misa hablan
acerca de “el fin de los tiempos,” la “Gran Tribulación” y la
“segunda venida de Cristo.” Todos estos pasajes de la escritura de
Daniel, de la Carta a los Hebreos y los pasajes del Evangelio hablan
de la oscuridad, de rebeliones y del cumplimiento del Reino de
Dios. Lo que a menudo fallamos en entender cuando leemos
acerca de las próximas tragedias terribles es el nuevo orden, la paz
y la gloria de Dios que siempre triunfan sobre el mal y las
calamidades que nos acecharán.
La Naturaleza humana tiene dos reacciones básicas a las
calamidades amenazantes del fin del tiempo: el miedo y la
incredulidad. Muchos tienen miedo de lo que el fin traerá. Muchos
más capitalizan este miedo y predican o predicen que todo lo que nos
rodea es una señal del fin del mundo. ¡Las guerras, los huracanes, la
violencia y el desorden político son señales seguras de que no
tenemos mucho tiempo antes de que Jesús venga a juzgarnos! Otros,
se burlan de la idea de un juicio eterno, de un rey justo, sabiendo que
muchas de las cosas que nos asustan son parte del orden natural del
universo. Los de poca fe no sólo desmienten que el mundo está por
terminar, pero también intentan atacar la misma religión para inculcar
miedo en la sociedad.
Ni el miedo y la incredulidad como la fe y la vigilancia tendrán
cualquier efecto en el fin del mundo o sólo en el fin de la raza
humana. Por igual, ni los Creacionistas ni los Evolucionistas
comprenden verdaderamente el poder creativo de Dios, así que ni los
científicos ni los fundamentalistas pueden entender lo que realmente
significa el fin del mundo desde un punto de vista Cristiano. El
Evangelio de San Marcos nos da la visión real de lo que está pasando
de cómo nuestro mundo se acerca o se arrastra a su eventual
destrucción.
Jesús nos dice como aprender la lección de la higuera. Esta no es
la higuera que maldijo por no producir fruto (aunque hay una lección
que aprender allí también). No, la lección que Él quiere que
aprendamos es que hay señales claras cuando la higuera está
creciendo, echando nuevas ramas y preparándose para dar mucho
fruto. Sí, las ramas son tiernas, los brotes son pequeños, pero el
verano está cerca! De la misma manera, el fin del mundo, como Jesús
habla de él, no es destrucción sino el surgimiento del Reino de Dios,
un reino donde la paz y la justicia, la verdad y la libertad prevalecerán
para todas las personas. Cuando Cristo esté a las puertas, no es el
momento de tener miedo ni dudas porque viene a llevar la creación a
su cumplimiento en la gloria de Dios Padre. La venida de Cristo trae
una nueva etapa en la evolución, como diría Pierre Teilhard de
Chardin, una evolución Cristiana que traerá a la humanidad a un
nuevo nivel de entendimiento del amor de Dios y de su Plan Divino.
Jesús, en el Evangelio de Marcos dice que Su generación no pasará
hasta que la rama de la humanidad se haya convertido en tierna y los
brotes de una nueva era llena de gran poder y gloria hayan
comenzado a brotar--¡la Resurrección y la Venida del Espíritu Santo!
Nuestro Santo Padre, el Papa Francisco I, nos hace un llamado a
entrar más plenamente en la nueva era la cual se encuentra sólo en el
amor de Cristo. El próximo Año Santo de la Misericordia es uno
donde estamos llamados a ver y a ser el rostro de nuestro Dios
misericordioso para que nadie este con miedo o sin su abrazo.

WEDDINGS: Couples intending to celebrate their wedding at
Our Lady of Mercy should contact the priest at least 8 months

because they want their offering to be a spiritual
gift known only to God. While the sentiment is
beautiful, we as parishioners also have an
obligation to support our parish. Using envelopes
to make your contribution allows the Church to
know that you are present and that you support the parish to the
best of your abilities. The amount NEVER MATTERS--only
the fact that you make a gift!
When loose money is placed in the collection, the next
person along the way can be tempted to remove the money,
hoping that the usher is not paying attention. Using envelopes
hides the amount you give, allowing you to give a larger
amount without tempting others and showing your trust in
God’s blessings to you and your family! nominees

What is poverty? Across the globe,
it has many faces: hunger, disease,
homelessness, and a lack of education
opportunities. We often associate these
realities with images of starving
children in Africa and Asia, but did
you know that over 650,000 of your
fellow Chicagoans are living in poverty
right now? Many of them are struggling
to meet their basic needs and provide for themselves and their
families on less than $2,000 a month.
This devastating reality fuels the Catholic Campaign for
Human Development (CCHD), which works to address the root
causes of poverty and empower the poor. CCHD is even
making a difference in your neighborhood, helping to fund the
Metropolitan Tenant Organization, who is working to educate,
organize and empower tenants to have a voice in the decisions
that affect the affordability and availability of safe, decent and
accessible housing.
This November 21 and 22, join thousands of generous
Chicago area Catholics who support the Catholic Campaign for
Human Development as it funds organizations doing
remarkable work to fight poverty and promote community
development in our neighborhoods.
¿Qué es la pobreza? En todo el mundo, la pobreza
tiene muchas caras: hambre, enfermedad, falta de
vivienda y falta de oportunidades educativas. A
menudo asociamos estas realidades con imágenes de
niños pasando hambre en África y Asia, pero ¿sabías
que más de 650,000 de nuestros hermanos y hermanas
aquí en Chicago viven en la pobreza actualmente?
Muchos de ellos tienen dificultades con proveer lo
suficiente para sus necesidades básicas para sí mismos
y sus familias con menos de $2,000 al mes.
Esta devastadora realidad aviva la Campaña Católica para el
Desarrollo Humano (CCHD), la cual trabaja no solo para dar a
conocer las raíces que causan la pobreza sino también para
capacitar y alentar a los pobres. CCHD incluso hace una
diferencia en su vecindario, ayudando a financiar la
organización metropolitana de inquilinos, cuyo objetivo es el
educar, organizar y capacitar a los inquilinos para que tengan
una voz clara en las decisiones que afectan a la accesibilidad y
disponibilidad de una vivienda segura, decente y accesible.
El 21 y 22 de Noviembre, únete a miles de Católicos

SCOUT ANNUAL FOOD DRIVE

The season of GIVING has begun. As part of our
goal to help others, we are collecting food donations to
support The Greater Food Depository of Chicago.
Bags will be distributed after Sunday mass on
November 28 and November 29. Please fill the bag
with your donation of non perishable food items (please
no glass or bread) and bring it with you to mass on
December 5 or December 6. Our scouts will be on hand
to receive your donation.

La temporada de compartir y regalar las bendiciones de
Dios ha comenzado. Como parte de nuestro objetivo de
ayudar a otros, estamos recolectando donaciones de alimentos
para apoyar al dispensario de comestibles de Chicago (The
Greater Food Depository of Chicago).
Se distribuirán bolsas después de las misas dominicales del
28 y 29 de noviembre. Por favor llene la bolsa con su donación
de alimentos no enlatados o de caja (por favor no vidrio o pan) y
tráigalos con usted a las misas del 5 o 6 de diciembre. Nuestros

MICHAEL HIGGINS
Mass: 5:00pm
Age: 74 years old and moving on down the road
Marital Status: single to date
Education: Bachelor of Science in commerce and
Master of Science in commerce both with major in
marketing and minor in finance at St. Louis
University.
Military: My friends and neighbors decided that I had enough
education and should defend them from the Vietnamese. I went
through training at FT. ORD CA and was assigned to
Headquarters Troop Command Ft. ORD which had everything but
military training in the Sixth Army on the West Coast.
Immediately following training, I did master sergeant work,
whatever needed doing. From there I went to the Republic of
Vietnam where I served as Non-Commissioned Officer in charge
of the command section, 1st signal Brigade under brigadier
General van Harlingen who was communications Electronics
officer of southeast Asia with 20 thousand troops in Vietnam,
Thailand, Laos, and Cambodia. I declined appointment as a
lieutenant because the war was over. In 1968 congress would not
approve Westmoreland’s plan to enter the north. The commanding
general wanted to make me his aide in order to put me ahead of
the west point graduates because they couldn’t write
grammatically correct English composition or conduct projects
but I wanted to go back to the world.
Business: I spent my career in commercial insurance gaining
experience company by company though Safeco as an
underwriter, Near North Insurance Agency as account executive,
Allendale Factory Mutual as an underwriter and with Zurich
Insurance company out of Switzerland in the International
Insurance Division of the U.S Branch as property manager writing
Fortune 1000 companies during my last 20 years I retired at 59.
Church: I backed the president of the Dignity Chicago Inc. board as
treasurer for two years and served on the board as liturgist for
two years. I assigned the priests to 5:00p.m Sunday Mass for
several years.
RENEE MUELLER
Mass: 5:00pm
I have been coming to Our Lady of Mercy for
three years, mostly to weekday masses. I have
recently become a registered member and
Eucharistic Minister for our Church. I grew up
Finnish (Scandinavian) apostolic Lutheran in the
backwoods and swamps of northern Minnesota. My two grown
children, who are part Filipino, were baptized at Our Lady of
Lourdes on Ashland Ave and went to Queen of Angels School on
Western Ave. I went through an RCIA program with my husband to
be, Andy, and we became Catholic in 2000. Andy was baptized and
confirmed; I was called to conversion. We married a year later by
Father Tom Lamping. I then went through a two year Lay Ministry
Program at St. Xavier and Mundelein. I love to smile with the joy
that I have in Jesus. I am looking forward to getting to know more
of you at the 5pm Mass. I hope to contribute to our parish needs
especially in the light of the Year of Mercy coming upon us. If it is
to be on the Parish Pastoral Council, I will rise to the occasion with
Grace and Mercy from our Holy Trinity and Mary Mother of God.

MIGUEL DELGADO

I was born and raised in Chicago as a
parishioner at Our Lady of Mercy Church. I
would like to run for Parish Council. I have
been the Lector Coordinator for the 7:45
Mass 2 years. I work for the Department of
Health - City of Chicago as a Communicable Disease
Investigator. I would like to extend my talents within the
Church. I was married at Our Lady of Mercy Church in
2004 and I am the son-in-law of the late May Virata. She
was instrumental for many years at Our Lady of Mercy
Church, if given a chance I would like to represent the
Parish Council.
MIRANDA ROBERTS
Mass: 11:15am
I have been a Catholic all my life. I attended St. Robert
Bellamine School and was a parishioner of that Church
previously. I started coming to Our Lady of Mercy in 7th
grade when we were required to go to Mass every week in
preparation for Confirmation. It was more realistic to walk
to OLM each day than take a 20 minute bus ride.
I became involved in the Church shortly after coming to
it. I became an Altar Server and would serve almost every
time that I came to Church. I would look forward to serving
in the Holy Week Masses the most. They were such good
examples of community at OLM and through serving I
grew to know people in the 11:15am Mass. I was also
involved many of the times the Totus Tuus program came
to OLM, then when OLM started its own month long
summer camp, I was a teacher. I taught children Catechism
and how to behave in Mass. I think the best memory I had
was teaching the story of Job to the 1st and 2nd graders they
were so excited to learn the story.
I wanted to participate in the Mass after being server, so
I contacted Nancy Holowka about becoming a Lector for
the 11:15 Mass. She encouraged me to take the Virtus
Training in December. Most recently I became a
Eucharistic Minister and still intend to become a Lector I
have registered Our Lady of Mercy this year in order to
receive envelopes and be registered to the church I am
involved. I would like to nominate myself to become a
representative for the 11:15 Mass of the Parish Council I
believe I would be a good candidate based on my
involvement in the Mass with the people.
