The Annual Report For Friends, Families, and Alumni of The Out-of-Door Academy 2012 - 2013 Honoring a Legend In this Issue • • • • Another Record Breaking Year for the Annual Fund Capital Campaign Exceeds $15 Million Goal Commencement 2013 Re-imagined Banyan Bash a Hit A Message from the Head of School Dear Out-of-Door Community, At the heart of any outstanding school are great families, great students and a great faculty. At The Out-of-Door Academy we are blessed with all three of these constituencies plus a commitment from the entire Out-of-Door family to make a difference in the lives of the children we serve each and every day. The 2012-13 school year was a year of amazing progress and accomplishment for our school. At the top of the list of achievements is the inspiring generosity of a community who believes in our mission and the importance of providing the best possible education for the next generation. It is important to acknowledge that nothing that The Out-of-Door Academy accomplished in the past year would have been possible without your philanthropic support and generosity. We are thankful, and grateful, for all that you do to continue to propel our school forward. These are exciting times in the eighty-nine year history of The Out-of-Door Academy. The past year was certainly a year to remember. In August, for the third consecutive year, we opened the doors with our largest PK-12 enrollment ever. In the admissions office, we set all-time records for tours, applications and the number of new students to enroll at Out-of-Door. Our students continued to amaze us with their varied accomplishments including a Google International Science Fair Champion, the largest number of ODA students with perfect SAT scores in school history, an unprecedented Advanced Placement Exam passing rate of 95%, and a record number of service hours performed by our PK-12 student body, to name just a few. In June, we celebrated the Commencement of the Class of 2013, whose academic promise and talents were recognized by many colleges and universities across the nation in the form of over $158,000 in merit based scholarships per graduate. Thanks to the inspiring efforts of the entire ODA family, our school continues to grow, strengthen and evolve amidst a rapidly changing, and highly competitive, educational landscape. Through record level giving to the Annual Fund, we are able to provide exceptional professional development opportunities for our faculty including 100% tuition reimbursement towards their pursuit of graduate degrees as well as state of the art technology which fosters innovative and creative teaching to better prepare our students for college and the complexities of life and work in the 21st Century. I am pleased to report that due to the incredible generosity of the Out-of-Door family our capital campaign, “Preserving Our Past & Expanding Our Future” exceeded its $15 Million goal in May of 2013. Last summer alone, capital giving funded: a total renovation of the three story building, new visual and performing arts studios, and an outdoor amphitheater on Siesta Key, as well as a much needed expansion to our athletic facilities on the Uihlein Campus including a new locker room building and athletic pavilion. Inspired by our success, humbled by the philanthropy of our supporters, and driven by the opportunity to provide additional, transformative learning opportunities for our students, we are expanding our goal and will work tirelessly to achieve it in the months ahead. One of the intangible and powerful qualities that The Out-of-Door Academy possesses is a palpable sense that even though it is a great institution with a storied past, it constantly strives to become better. This spirit, coupled with strategic thinking and disciplined planning, will ensure that the best days for our school are yet to come. Thank you for your continued support and for all that you do to make The Out-of-Door Academy such a unique and dynamic community. Sincerely, David V. Mahler Head of School 2 The Banyan Letter from the Chairman of the Board of Trustees The 2012-2013 school year was one of continued growth at The Out-of-Door Academy. Our school year started with record enrollment and tremendous progress was seen in each core discipline: academics, the arts and athletics. In particular, this year’s senior class received some of the highest standardized test scores in the history of the school and were accepted to many prestigious colleges and universities throughout the country. Congratulations to the Class of 2013! Your support of the school has been tremendous and I am pleased to report that, in May, we exceeded our capital campaign goal of $15 million in the quiet phase of this campaign. We are grateful, and humbled, by the inspiring philanthropy of all of the families who have given selflessly to enhance our PreK-12 programs and to help us better fulfill our mission. The Board of Trustees remains committed to investing in Out-of-Door’s future and pending continued successful fundraising and broader participation, we hope to break ground on a new academic facility on the Uihlein Campus in the coming year. Recent renovations include an entirely renovated the three-story building on Siesta Key with beautiful, new, state-of-the art classrooms, a new STEM Lab, and an activity center to promote more group based projects and collaborative learning opportunities. Also added are beautiful new visual arts, orchestra and choral music rooms along with the new crown jewel of the Siesta Key campus, The Kozel Family Amphitheater, which provides a spectacular performance venue for our Lower School students and connects our current program with the original “Out-of-Door” vision of our founders. At the Uihlein Campus, a growing enrollment, the migration of 6th grade and increased participation in our athletic program has put stress on our athletic infrastructure. Due to your generosity, we renovated our existing locker rooms for use by our middle school students, added an additional varsity locker room for our female student-athletes, a new facility for our athletic trainer and a new outdoor athletic pavilion mirroring the Dart Family Pavilion on Siesta Key. Also, thanks to a gift from the Grain Family, we were able to construct the boy’s varsity locker room in the fall of 2013. All of these improvements would not be possible without the incredible generosity of the Out-of-Door community. As the Out-of-Door family continues to grow, your commitment and philanthropic support has been truly remarkable. The Annual Fund set another record with total contributions of $705,000. As you know, tuition only covers about 90% of the cost of educating our children. The remainder has to be raised through contributions. Our yearly fundraiser, the Banyan Bash, once again complemented the Annual Fund nicely, with excellent participation and resources. Our Parent Association has also continued to grow. Many events, including artistic performances, sporting events, Thunder Fun Day, Turkey Bowl, and many more would not be possible without the countless volunteer hours from our parents. By volunteering, you not only enrich our students’ lives, but you also make our community stronger, and I thank you. This school year concludes my term as Board Chair for The Out-of-Door Academy. I am humbled to have led such a dedicated and committed group of Trustees over the last couple of years. The leadership of the Board is in great hands with Mitzie Henson as incoming Board Chair. The future of Out-of-Door is bright and your support is vital in order for us to fulfill our mission. Your commitment, both in time and resources, has allowed our school to flourish this past year. Please join me as we celebrate our successes, but also pledge to continue to work diligently to make our school even better. Thank you for all that you do for Out-of-Door. Sincerely, Mike vonWaldner Chairman of the Board Letter from the Associate Head of School for Advancement Looking back on the 2012-2013 school year, I am in awe of the tremendous philanthropic support shown by The Out-of-Door Academy community. Through our Capital Campaign and annual fundraising efforts, we raised over $2.2 million dollars in support of the mission of Out-of-Door. This successful year of fundraising was highlighted by the completion of our $15 million dollar Capital Campaign, “Preserving Our Past, Expanding Our Future”. This phase of the campaign funded improvements to both campuses and we are extremely grateful to the charter donors who generously gave in order to make this possible. We are excited to share with you some of the future plans for additional improvements in the coming year! The year began with a Ribbon Cutting of our Lower School Playground, which was made possible by a generous donation from Ashley Kozel. What better way to start the school year for PreK – 5th grade students, than by playing on the playground for the first day of school? Later in the year, Ms. Kozel, along with Lexie ’21 and Gabby ’24, cut the ribbon on our new Lower School Wellness Center. Thank you to the Kozel Family for their tremendous generosity. Our Annual Fund, which was led by co-chairs Amy Sussman, Linda Ross and Teena Humphrey, raised a record $705,000, up from a previous high of $615,000 from the previous year, while yielding an 80% parent participation rate for the third year in a row. Thank you to all of the donors who participated in making this a fantastic year for our Annual Fund campaign! “Innovation” was the key word for this year’s Banyan Bash. We invited guests to leave their black ties at home and join us for a journey “back to our roots” on the Siesta Key campus. The event featured several food vendors from some of the finest restaurants in Sarasota, a half-court basketball shot for free tuition, music, mobile bidding, a truncated live auction and a cocktail party atmosphere, while raising over $260,000 for Out-of-Door. We were pleased to be named, “Best Reinvented Event” by Scene Magazine. None of this would have been possible if not for the efforts of our tremendous volunteer base. A big thank you to Advancement Committee Chair, Mike vonWaldner; Parent Association President Val Leatherwood; Arts Guild Chair Suzanne Munroe; Thunder Athletic Club Chair, Teena Humphrey, and the aforementioned Annual Fund co-chairs, Amy Sussman, Linda Ross and Teena Humphrey. Thank you to the Advancement Team, Shannon Drosky, Lauren Hersh, Julie Fineberg, and Virgene Linse. I appreciate all that you do each day for Out-of-Door! In conclusion, I want to thank each and every one of you who are listed in this report. Your commitment to Out-of-Door is inspiring and our students, faculty and staff are grateful for all that you do. Thank you for all that you do to make Out-of-Door a special place for all of our students. Currently, The Out-of-Door Academy fields 35 Middle and Upper School teams in 13 sports. Since the varsity athletic program’s inception in 1996, Thunder teams have won an impressive 20 District and Regional championships, in addition to 60 district, 20 regional, and 8 state individual championships. The volunteer support of TAC has been instrumental in this success, and as participation increases so do financial and volunteer athletic needs. TAC raises funds through the sale of annual memberships, season passes, Thunder merchandise, concession revenue, as well as hosting the annual Thunder Golf Tournament. In addition to financial support, TAC provides volunteer assistance for various athletic events: helping with ticket sales, scorekeeping, game announcing, and more. TAC also sponsors the ‘Team Parent Program’ in which parents volunteer to assist the coaches with such duties as organizing ticket takers at games, planning pregame meals and snacks for the teams, sending weekly email updates to parents, and hosting the end-of-season team party. During the 2012-2013 school year, TAC raised $31,926 and was able to help sponsor the following: • • • • • • Record Boards Mosquito Nix System for Football Stadium Atlius Pole Hi-Def Camera System Volleyball Net System Lacrosee Gear Please consider joining Thunder Athletic Club and become a part of the winning team! An anonymous donor made a generous gift early to the “Preserving Our Past, Expanding Our Future” Capital Campaign to name the library in Mrs. Huene’s honor upon her retirement. The refurbishing project on the library was the first construction project in the revitalization of the Siesta Key Campus in 2008 (?). The unveiling and naming was a long-held surprise to all who attended the event. “Her love for children and literature has inspired countless numbers of ODA students to love reading and learning.” David Mahler In 1981, Huene moved to Sarasota with her husband Skip who worked as a drudge engineer at the time. Her husband remembers helping Glendy by cooking up 40 dozen eggs for Dr. Seuss’s Birthday when she reads Green Eggs & Ham to children. Her career began when a neighbor simply mentioned (back in 1983,) that the librarian at The Out-of-Door Academy was moving and she should inquire about a job. One thing is certain, she has created from scratch, an outstanding library program and her “Thank you for being an ODA legend and we will never forget you,” passion for working with students has never wavered. And as much as Mrs. Huene loves to interact with her students, parents, Mrs. Huene recounts the days and fellow faculty members, something that you may not know about her of the ink stamp and pocket in is that when she turns the lights out in the library and heads for home, the back of the book to track she likes to lead what she describes as “a solitary life.” She enjoys hiking its due date, into the computer and biking and, of course, likes to curl up with a good book in her free age, when former Out-of-Door parent, Jay Crouse told Mrs. Huene in the time. late 80’s it was time to upgrade. Out-of-Door parent Ashley Kozel and her children Lexie ‘21 and Gabby ‘24 cut the ribbon to the new equipment on the morning of Wednesday, August 22, 2012 to a large and very excited crowd of parents, students, and faculty. On behalf of the entire Out-of-Door community, thank you to the Kozel family for your generous donation. It will be enjoyed by countless students for many years to come. On January 11, 2013, The Out-of-Door Academy officially opened the doors to the new Lower School Wellness Center at the Ribbon Cutting Ceremony. The new 1,250 square foot facility offers a gym that contains cardio machines and weights, girls and boys locker room facilities, and a coaches’ office. Head of School David Mahler, members of the Board of Trustees, faculty, and the Lower School student body gathered to personally thank Ashley Kozel for her generous gift on behalf of her daughters, Out-of-Door students, Lexie '21 and Gabby ‘24. While academic excellence has always been at the forefront of Out-of-Door's mission, teaching young people how to lead active and healthy lives is equally important. A comprehensive Wellness Program was established in 2009 for our students, faculty and staff, and parents. The Wellness Program’s mission is to provide our entire school community with current, research-based information, extensive programming, and resources in an effort to promote good, healthy lifestyle choices on a variety of topics, including fitness, nutrition, sleep, stress management, and building healthy relationships. The Lower School Wellness Center is another great resource to meet these needs. The theme of going “Back to Our Roots” was pervasive throughout the evening as those in attendance experienced a unique mixture of tradition combined with innovation. Guests enjoyed the wonderful ambiance of the historic Lower School campus, which was infused with mobile bidding on their personal devices and a live webcast of the evening’s festivities. Upon arrival, attendees were enthralled by the picturesque Banyan Tree, which was illuminated with thousands of lights. From there, guests made their way onto the athletic field, which was transformed with streetlights and cafe’ style seating. Supporters then traversed into the Dart Pavilion, which was beautifully lit; to try a half-court shot for free tuition, as well as to generously bid during the live and silent auction. Guests were treated to some of the finest cuisine in Sarasota from our generous sponsors of the event underneath the stars on a gorgeous evening. The event was a great success raising over $250,000 in support of Out-of-Door’s mission of academics, the arts, and athletics. The money raised through Banyan Bash goes to support faculty professional development and provides the necessary resources for facility enhancements. A portion of the proceeds goes into our endowment, which is the financial foundation for Out-of-Door.
