THE ANNOINTED

When the Second Person of the Trinity
became man in the virginal womb of Mary
she received the human name "Jesus"
which in Spanish means "God saves". His
eternal name is "the Word"; His human
name is "Jesus." In this glorious name we
add the word "Christ" meaning "anointed"
and so we know Him as Jesus Christ.
"Christ" is not a name; it is a mission from
God. Jesus was sent by his Father to be the
Christ. The word "Christ" is the Greek
word; the language it was written in the
New Testament of the Bible, the Hebrew
equivalent is "Messiah," the Anointed.
Jesus is thus the Messiah.
Who was the Messiah? It was a figure
expected by all the chosen people of God
and repeatedly promised by the prophets
who were plotting his image over the
centuries, so that people could recognize when present in their midst. The Messiah itself meets
the king, prophet and priest, and led the people elected to salvation.
The public life of Jesus is the good news that God's Kingdom is already in our midst and that
King is Jesus himself. It is good news that a new alliance was sealed and the priest, the victim,
and the altar are Jesus himself. It is the good news that God's word itself has become flesh and
lives among us, not as written words but as the Living Word. The life of Jesus is the Gospel, that
is, the good news.
Why it is called Messiah? In the chosen town it was customary to anoint priests, kings, and
prophets sent by God. That anointing was a sign of divine election and the sign that God poured
out His Spirit upon the anointed to always act carried away by it. Jesus said of himself that the
Holy Spirit had anointed Him. He is the Messiah, the Christ, and the Anointed! And His Father
testified of Him, and his life attached to the Holy Spirit testified to him, until God gave
testimony of his own blood, his death and resurrection.
From what does the Messiah save us? Many people from the chosen town expected a Messiah
to save them from Rome and make them a winning town. They expected a political messiah, but
the kingdoms of the world had come and gone, risen and fallen. The salvation of Jesus Christ
goes as deep as the human being; He saves us from ourselves and heals our hearts. He saves us
from sin and eternal death, offering not only a kingdom after death, but a present day Kingdom,
very present, born in the heart of every Christian, which bears fruit in the kingdom of men.
We the followers of Christ call ourselves Christians.

Cuando la Segunda Persona de la Santísima
Trinidad se hizo hombre en el seno virginal de
María Santísima recibió el nombre humano de
“Jesús”, que en español significa “Dios salva”. Su nombre eterno es “la Palabra”; su
nombre humano es “Jesús”. A este glorioso
nombre añadimos la palabra “Cristo”, que significa “ungido”, y así lo conocemos como Jesucristo. “Cristo” no es un nombre, es una misión de Dios. Jesús fue enviado por su Padre
para ser el Cristo. La palabra “Cristo” es del
griego, idioma en que fue escrito todo el Nuevo Testamento de la Biblia, el equivalente en
hebreo es “Mesías”, el Ungido. Jesús es, pues,
el Mesías.
¿Quién era el Mesías? Era un personaje esperado por todo el pueblo escogido de Dios y
prometido repetidamente por los profetas que
fueron trazando su imagen a lo largo de los
siglos, de tal modo que el pueblo pudiera reconocerlo cuando se presentara en medio de
ellos. El Mesías reuniría en sí mismo el ser rey, profeta y sacerdote, y llevaría al pueblo elegido a la
salvación.
La vida pública de Jesús es la buena noticia de que el Reino de Dios ya está en medio de nosotros y
que el Rey es Jesús mismo. Es la buena noticia de que se sella una nueva alianza y que el Sacerdote,
la víctima y el altar es Jesús mismo. Es la buena noticia de que la Palabra de Dios misma se ha hecho
carne y vive entre nosotros, no como palabra escrita, sino como Palabra viva. La vida de Jesús es el
Evangelio, es decir, la buena noticia.
¿Por qué se le llama Ungido? En el pueblo escogido existía la costumbre de que Dios mandaba ungir
a sus sacerdotes, a sus reyes y a sus profetas. Esa unción era el signo de la elección divina y el signo
de que Dios derramaba sobre el ungido su Espíritu para que siempre actuara dejándose llevar por él.
Jesús dice de sí mismo que el Espíritu Santo lo ha ungido; ¡él es el Mesías, el Cristo, el Ungido! Y su
Padre da testimonio de él, y su vida apegada al Espíritu Santo, da testimonio de él, hasta que ofrece a
Dios el testimonio de su propia sangre, de su muerte y de su resurrección.
¿De qué nos salva el Mesías? Muchos en el pueblo escogido esperaban un mesías que los salvara de
Roma y que hiciera de ellos un pueblo vencedor. Esperaban un mesías político, pero los reinos de la
tierra van y vienen, se elevan y caen. La salvación de Jesucristo va a lo profundo del ser humano, nos
salva de nosotros mismos sanando nuestro corazón y haciéndolo participe desde ahora de la misma
divina. Nos salva del pecado y de la muerte eterna, ofreciéndonos no sólo un Reino después de la
muerte, sino un Reino presente, muy presente, y que nace en el corazón de cada cristiano, pero que da
fruto en el reino de los hombres.
Los seguidores del Mesías nos llamamos cristianos.
Los católicos fuimos los primeros en llevar ese glorioso nombre.
