Event a big hit with producers & affiliates

urphy-Brown held its bi-annual
Vendor Expo on March 19th at
the Sampson County Agri-Expo Center
pork barbecue simmering on the more
than 30 grills parked outside. A whole
hog cooking contest as well as a pork rib
in Clinton, North Carolina. Again, this
event proved to be a successful opportunity for contract producers and industry
affiliates to meet and interact with a
variety of vendors who offer products
and services commonly used in the pork
industry. The Expo provides a platform
for vendors to exhibit cutting edge technologies and ideas that could potentially
help producers operate their farms more
efficiently and profitably.
Around noon the day of the event the
Center was packed with visitors as they
drifted in on the smoky sweet aroma of
cooking contest had Murphy-Brown employees pitted against one another in an
effort to win trophies, prizes and bragging
rights. When the judging was complete
the spoils resulted in a delicious, much
anticipated barbecue lunch for visitors and
participants.
Continuing Education hours were also
offered on site for Operator-In-Charge
and Pesticide Applicator licenses.
The 2013 Murphy-Brown Vendor Expo
was free and open to the public.

focuses on emerging technologies in the swine industry

developed a Science and
Technology team lead by Dr.
Terry Coffey. The goal of
this team is to establish an

long-term opportunities, evaluates the
ideas and application to the organization,
and tracks implementation to achieve
economic benefit for Murphy Brown.

In the past year and a half the Murphy Brown East Science and Technology
team has completed 23 trials and has 28
trials that are upcoming or currently in
progress. These trials cover broad areas of
focus including alternative feed ingredients, improving feed efficiency, improving
animal care, mitigating the impacts of
heat stress, refining feed manufacturing processes, improving sow lifetime
productivity, and continuously evaluating
emerging technologies.

FFA Appreciation Award

Appreciation Award at the Annual FFA Banquet & Awards night
on March 21st. The appreciation award is for the support that
Murphy-Brown LLC provides to the
Algona FFA on an annual basis.
Murphy-Brown also provides the
FFA students with a 23 acre plot of
land located east of the Algona
campus. The students choose the
annual crop, corn or soybeans,
to plant each spring, apply the
nutrients needed and harvest the
crop in the fall. The next year they
sell their harvest on the Chicago
Board of Trade. The money is used
to fund FFA events, trips, banquets
and scholarships.

A good day for ducks!
The freezing rain, sleet,
snow and blustery winds
didn’t dampen the spirits of
young birdwatchers, children of Murphy-Brown East
contract growers, during the
Youth Waterfowl Watch,
held at the mixed-use wildlife impoundment located
on a company farm near
Warsaw, N.C.
Variety of duck calls
W
inter usually arrives late in Eastern
North Carolina. When the temperature finally drops, the waterfowl take
flight. Foul weather is usually considered
a duck hunter’s greatest blessing. If that’s
the case, then Murphy-Brown chose the
very best day of the year to host the 2013
Youth Waterfowl Watch.
When the company constructed an
80-acre mixed use wildlife impoundment
on one of its hog farms near Warsaw, NC,
one of the objectives was to offer educational opportunities and activities to the
public. The Murphy-Brown mixed-use
wildlife impoundment is used for planting and harvesting crops in the summer
months. The land is flooded in the winter
and used for migratory resting and feeding areas for waterfowl and other wildlife.
The Youth Waterfowl Watch is an
event offered to the children of MurphyBrown East’s contract growers age 7-14
accompanied by one parent or guardian. On February 16th, participants of
the Waterfowl Watch braved some harsh
weather conditions including sleet, freezing rain, snow and high winds to watch
as migratory waterfowl descended on the
wildlife impoundment.
Since the best time to view migrating
waterfowl is from dawn to mid-morning
or late afternoon to dark, participants
enjoyed other activities while they waited,
including a scavenger hunt. Groups of
3 to 4 searched the woods surrounding the impoundment looking for clues.
Once these clues, which were actually
letters, were collected, the first group to
unscramble the word “conservation” each
received a gift certificate to Wal-Mart.
The weather may have contributed to
the early premier of the flocks of ducks
that appeared at the impoundment or,
since each participant received their own

ited, it may have been the continuous
stream of mating calls that got their attention. Either way, the young birdwatchers
were not disappointed as several species
of waterfowl filled the afternoon sky.

was developed through the assistance of
the North Carolina Foundation for Soil
and Water Conservation, the Sampson
County Soil and Water Conservation
District, and Ducks Unlimited.

new program at JSCC
M
urphy-Brown has donated
$100,000 to James Sprunt
Community College in
Kenansville, NC to help develop and
operate a state-of-the-art Diesel Mechanic
Program.
Murphy-Brown has an immediate and
on-going need for qualified diesel mechanics to help maintain its transportation fleet. Currently, there are few qualified diesel mechanics available locally to
meet the existing and anticipated needs.
This new program will target a local and
regional critical skills shortage by offering
mechanics employed with agribusinesses,
transportation companies, and other industries nationally recognized credentials.
This new program will offer existing
mechanics continuing education certificates in Electrical, Hydraulics, Preventative Maintenance, Heating and Air
Conditioning, and Brakes & Alignment.
In addition, JSCC is working to position
itself to offer a certificate, diploma and
associates degree in diesel mechanics that
will provide participants the opportunity
to become certified diesel mechanics.
The development of this program was
contingent upon receipt of a $1,000,000
grant from the NC Tobacco Trust Fund.
While this grant will cover most of the
cost of building the facilities, an additional $600,000 will be needed for shop equip-
ment, faculty and administrative services.
Construction of a new 12,000 square foot
building to house the program will soon
begin at the Duplin County Industrial
Park near Warsaw, N.C. In addition to

course, part of the program’s
syllabus, is offered at the MurphyBrown welding shop in Warsaw,
N.C. The course work will review
basic fundamentals of hydraulics

including safety, tool principles,
system components, troubleshooting hydraulic systems and schematic reading.

Murphy-Brown was recently recognized among 134 meat and
poultry companies for outstanding workers safety performance by
the American Meat Institute Foundation (AMIF).

Award); Circle Four Farms-Milford, UT (Environmental Award);
Murphy-Brown-Kenansville, NC (Award of Commendation);
Murphy-Brown-Waverly, VA (Award of Commendation); MurphyBrown-Rose Hill, NC (Certificate of Recognition).
The American Meat Institute Foundation (AMIF) seeks to
identify technologies and practices that enable meat and poultry
companies to produce safer and more nutritious meat and
poultry products.

Three from Murphy-Brown named Master
Pork Producers at Iowa Pork Congress
T
he new class of Master Pork Producers features 10 hog farmers who
were selected and recognized by their
peers at a banquet in Des Moines for
excellence in pork production.
Nominated by their peers and neighbors, all of the award winners are recognized for their expertise in their segments
of the production cycle and understanding of current industry issues, quality
assurance, animal identification and wellbeing and their production efficiency.
Three of these nominees were
Murphy-Brown contract producers:
• Bill Bramley, Emmetsburg, Palo Alto

• Dean Klein, Panama, Shelby Co.
• Brad and Terri Van Gelder, Creston,
Adams Co.
The Iowa Pork Producers Association
and Iowa State University co-sponsor the
Master Pork Producer program, which
began in 1942, to demonstrate the character and breadth of Iowa pork production.

In 2012 Smithfield initiated a sustainability awards program. This award
is intended to encourage competition among the Smithfield independent operation companies (IOC’s), including Murphy-Brown, and to
recognize and reward outstanding sustainability accomplishments.
Each IOC receives the Smithfield Sustainability Award for the highest
scoring plant or farm division within their IOC. Scores are reported and
tabulated annually. In 2012 the Rocky Mountain division achieved the
highest score within Murphy-Brown.

at North Carolina Pork Conference
I
f you’re a North Carolina pork
producer you don’t want to miss
the NC Pork Conference held each
year in January. This year’s 57th annual
conference was again held at the NC
State Fairgrounds in conjunction with the
Southeastern Farm Show. The conference
gives pork producers and allied industry
representatives a chance to attend educational seminars, visit the farm show and
enjoy a fun night out at the Bacon Bash.
The following day, an industry award
breakfast is held early for attendees.
Awards presented are the Pork AllAmerican, Outstanding Pork Producer,
Environmental Steward and Hall of Fame.
This year, two Murphy-Brown producers
were recognized.
2013 Outstanding Pork
Producer
This award went to Stephen Williamson
Jr., of Kenansville, NC who operates the
Earth Right Farm where he produces
weaned pigs for Murphy-Brown and finishes hogs for both Murphy-Brown and
Maxwell Foods.
Williamson currently serves on the
NC Pork Council’s Board of Directors, is
the chairperson for the Duplin County
Agribusiness Fair, is past president of the
Duplin County Agribusiness Council,
and is a member of the Duplin County
Cattlemen’s Association.
Williamson is actively involved in his
community. He is a Kenansville Town
Board member, chairman of the town’s
Event Center advisory board and has
been a member of the Kenansville Volunteer Fire Department since he was old
enough to join.
The selection for Outstanding Pork
Producer is based on contributions to the
pork industry, family and community
through good management and leadership ability.
Environmental Steward Winner
Bennie Barwick of Warsaw, NC was
recognized as the Environmental Steward
winner for his operation’s outstanding
environmental practices.
The BW Barwick sow farm is a 3,400sow farrow-to-wean farm under contract
with Murphy-Brown for 20 years producing commercial wean pigs.
The BW Barwick farm uses most of
the available protective technologies and
there has never been an environmental
violation issued to the farm. It utilizes
a single-cell anaerobic treatment lagoon
and the treated manure is used as a fertilizer for 115 acres of coastal Bermuda
grass.
Water usage is constantly monitored
by farm employees. Various practices are
used to reduce odor. Barns are naturally
vented which reduces potential odor.
Barwick uses a continuous grass
system which works to minimize erosion
and rotational grazing practices for the 48
brood cows pastured at the farm. Buffers
are maintained around fields to capture
any soil erosion and provide habitat to the
indigenous wildlife in the area, including
wild turkey and deer.
The NCPC Environmental Steward
Award recognizes a pork producer who
excels in on-farm environmental stewardship, focusing on manure management,
soil conservation, water conservation,
wildlife habitat, air quality and public
relations.

South Central Region Sponsors Special Olympics
More than just a game!
E
veryone knows that Special Olympics
is a good cause, but you never know
how rewarding the program is until you
volunteer to help. The beaming faces of
the athletes as they cross the finish line,
whether they come in first or last, show so
much accomplishment and appreciation
for all the cheers of encouragement. The
challenges they face seem to disappear as
they focus on the competition.
Volunteers from Murphy-Brown’s
South Central Region in Rose Hill, N.C.
were proud to sponsor the 2013 Sampson
County (NC) Special Olympics, held at
Union High School in Rose Hill on April
11th. Not only did the group prepare and
serve lunch for approximately 600 athletes and volunteers, they were on hand
to help distribute medals and awards to

the winners of the variety of games. They
seemed to be getting more out of it than
the athletes as they placed medals on the
winners and congratulated each of them
on their accomplishment.
The coordinator for this special event
was Charlotte Byrd. Charlotte is the
occupational therapist with Sampson
County Schools. She and her husband
Scott are also contract producers with
Murphy-Brown. Their contract nursery
is located in Roseboro, N.C.
“Special Olympics is for the intellectually disabled, a unique population in our
county,” Charlotte said. “These children
don’t always have the same opportunities
that other children do. Many can’t just
go and take part in parks and recreation
activities. For many, it’s also not possible
for them to be a part of a school team
because they do require a lot of training.
But this gives them that experience; it
gives them something to participate in.
It’s a goal setting challenge for them and
allows them to see the rewards of working
hard and doing your best.”
Special Olympics is the world’s largest sports organization for children and
adults with intellectual disabilities, providing year-round training and competitions to more than 4 million athletes in
170 countries.

La Observación de Aves Acuáticas
para la Juventud es un evento ofrecido a
los niños de los productores por contrato
de Murphy-Brown Este entre 7 y 14 años
de edad acompañados de un padre o
guardián. El 16 de febrero, los participantes de la Observación resistieron las
condiciones climáticas difíciles incluyendo agua-hielo, lluvia, nieve y vientos
fuertes para observar a las aves migratorias mientras descendían sobre la reserva
silvestre.
Como la mejor hora para ver a las
aves migratorias es del amanecer hasta la
media mañana o en la tarde justo antes de
obscurecer, los participantes disfrutaron
de otras actividades mientras esperaban,
incluyendo una búsqueda del tesoro.
Grupos de 3 a 4 buscaron pistas entre el
bosque cercano a la reserva. Una vez que
todas las pistas que fueron letras, fueron
encontradas, cada uno de los miembros
del primer grupo en descifrar la palabra
“conservación” recibió una tarjeta de
regalo para Wal-Mart.
El clima pudo haber contribuido a que
las primeras parvadas de patos aparecieran a temprana hora o tal vez fue el uso
de los llamadores de patos que todos los
participantes recibieron del Club Ducks
Unlimited fue lo que los atrajo. De cualquier forma los jóvenes observadores
de aves no fueron decepcionados y varias
especies de aves acuáticas se apreciaron
durante la tarde.

El dinero es destinado para financiar eventos de la FFA, viajes,
banquetes y becas.

y operación de un Nuevo Programa de
Mecánica Diesel.
Murphy-Brown tiene una necesidad inmediata y constante de mecánicos diesel
calificados. Este nuevo programa tratará
de resolver las actuales y futuras necesidades locales y regionales al ofrecer credenciales de validez nacional a mecánicos
que trabajan con las agroindustrias,
compañías de trasporte y otras.
Este Nuevo programa ofrecerá a mecánicos certificados de educación continua en
Electricidad, Hidráulica, Mantenimiento
Preventivo, Calefacción y Aire Acondicionado y Alineación y Frenos. Además el
JSCC está trabajando para poder ofrecer
un certificado, diploma y nivel de asociados en mecánica diesel lo que proveerá a
los participantes la oportunidad de convertirse en mecánicos diesel certificados.
El desarrollo de este programa fue
contingente al otorgamiento de una
donación de $1000,000 por parte del Fondo financiero del Tabaco de Carolina del
Norte. Mientras que la donación cubre la
mayor parte del costo de construcción de
las instalaciones, se necesitarán $ 600,000
más para equipo de taller, servicios a los

una granja de 3,400 cerdas de parto a destete
bajo contrato con Murphy-Brown por 20 años
produciendo cerdos comerciales de destete.
La Granja BW Barwick usa la mayoría de la
tecnología protectora del ambiente disponible
y nunca ha tenido una violación ambiental.
Utiliza un tratamiento unicelular anaeróbico
para la laguna y el estiércol tratado es usado
para fertilizar 115 acres de zacate bermuda.
El uso de agua es constantemente monitoreado por los empleados de la granja. Varias
prácticas son utilizadas para reducir el olor.
