From the Pastor’s Desk WHEN DO WE RECEIVE THE SPIRIT? Today we celebrate the gift of the Holy Spirit. With today’s celebration, the question comes, “At what point do we receive the Holy Spirit? At baptism or at Confirmation?” At baptism, we were baptized in the “Name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.” For this reason, the gift of the Holy Spirit came to us at baptism. Yet, why then do we celebrate the Sacrament of Confirmation as the coming of the Holy Spirit on those who are to be confirmed? As part of the early Church’s practice, those who were baptized received the Sacrament of Confirmation by a bishop who would come as soon as possible after people were baptized. The bishop represented the Church as a whole. So this became an affirmation by the Church and completed the initiation process into the faith. Baptism conferred the gift of the Holy Spirit and Confirmation sealed the gift. Early on in the Church’s history, all of this took place relatively in a short span of time from one another. The trouble has been that Confirmation is oftentimes delayed by years after baptism. Thus, there can be a confusion that we do not receive the gift of the Holy Spirit until we are confirmed. The Spirit is already there at Baptism. Confirmation is the seal that affirms the presence of the Holy Spirit. Padre Tirso Villaverde, Jr. Fr.
