Catholic Charities
AmazonSmile Foundation benefits our local
Catholic Charities! We are happy to announce that
Catholic Charities, Diocese of Rockville Centre, is
now a registered charity with AmazonSmile. As most
of you know, AmazonSmile is a website operated by
Amazon that allows customers to enjoy the same wide
selection of products, low prices, and convenient
shopping
features as on Amazon.com. The difference is that now when you shop on AmazonSmile
(smile.amazon.com), the AmazonSmile Foundation
will donate 0.5% of the price of eligible purchases
back to Catholic Charities. Please make sure when
you first visit the AmazonSmile site you select
Catholic Charities Diocese of Rockville Centre as
the charitable organization you wish to support
when prompted and then you may begin to shop
0.5% might seem like a small amount to be donated back to Catholic Charities but the amount adds
up fast when many Amazon shoppers designate
Catholic Charities as the charity to benefit. Go to
http://smile.amazon.com for answers to all your
questions and to register. Thank you for supporting Catholic Charities!

My dear brother priests;
The Ordinary Synod just completed in Rome was an important moment in the Church’s deep and constant
desire to care pastorally for marriage and family life. We all should be grateful to Pope Francis for having
conceived the idea of the subject matter and his constant and fatherly attention to all the debates and discussions which were carried on in the Synod Hall and in the language groups which led to the vote on the Final
Propositions.
The media have followed the Synod closely and, each according to its own criteria, have offered their comments. If there is one thing we faithful Catholics have learned during this pontificate is that it is always better to read what the Pope and the Synod Fathers actually say than the media chooses to emphasize. As a result our people will want to know from us what the truth is on many questions debated in the Synod Hall.
Please take note of the following points.
First regards the nature of a Synod as established by Blessed Pope Paul VI and carried on by subsequent
pontiffs including our present Holy Father. A Synod is not deliberative. It is a forum of a necessarily limited
number of bishops elected by their peers in each Episcopal conference to participate in the discussion and
conversation. They cannot propose any new doctrine or change any established doctrine. The do not on their
own change any pastoral practice.
Second, this Synod passed the 94 propositions with varying degrees of a majority vote. Most received widespread support. Three were very close. One (n.85) passed by a single vote more than needed. The Fathers
addressed these propositions not to the Church in general but to the Holy Father. They explicitly stated they
wished him to use them as he sees fit. He will decide what next steps he wishes to put into play.
Third, because of the nature of the propositions, as I just mentioned, no bishop or priest is free to put into
pastoral practice any of the suggestions in these propositions on his own. To use one example but an important one: proposition, n. 85, offers a “penitential path” that would seem to encourage greater use of
“internal forum” solutions. Specifically, they suggest a penitential path using the internal forum for a person
who is the innocent party of a civil divorce and has entered into an irregular civil second marriage. At present this is only a suggestion to the Holy Father. Only after he has made public his decision can such a pastoral practice come into play. Absent that, no priest in this Diocese is to take it upon himself to begin such a
practice.
Fourth and most important, we priests must always teach and preach the beauty of sacramental marriage.
We must accompany young couples as they prepare for marriage. We must be open and welcoming to those
who find themselves in difficult situations and turn to us because they want to have the help the Church
alone can offer. We are present to them in order to encourage and guide them toward living a true sacramental marriage for them and their children . And if this is not possible for any reason whatsoever, the Church
never abandons them. The Church helps them live spiritual communion through prayer and participation in
Church life that is consistent with the teaching of the Church as found in the Catechism of the Catholic
Church and St. John Paul II’s apostolic letter, Familiaris Consortio.
May the Lord bless us and our priestly ministry as we continue to serve marriage and family life in this
blessed Diocese of Rockville Centre.
Yours fraternally in Christ,
William Murphy
