Fourth Sunday of Lent
The following information comes from the dedication booklet
that was created when the church was dedicated.
The architects for the church was the company of Spencer,
Herolz, & Durham, Inc. The Brookstone Corporation was the
general contractor. Sister Mary Peter Tremonte, O.P. collaborated
with the architects and created a variety of original artwork
specifically designed for our Christ the Good Shepherd
community.
The focal point of the gathering-plaza is the statue of our
Patron: Christ Jesus. The Lord called Himself the Good Shepherd
(John 10:14) and depicts himself throughout the scripture as a
loving, caring, shepherding God—leading and nurturing His
people. It is the Lord who does the shepherding, as seen from the
viewpoint of the Old Testament prophet Ezekiel, whose inspired
words are depicted on the band at the base of the statue. The
sculpture of the Good Shepherd, is an original design of Sister
Mary Peter Tremonte, O.P. and was cast in bronze in one piece
at a foundry in Verona, Italy.
From the plaza, the gathering flows into the narthex or
vestibule, a symbol of transition and a passageway into the
assembly and worship space. We enter the main gathering space
by two ambulatories: to the right passing the baptismal pool,
symbol of entry into the community of faith; to the left, passing
down the long, darker passage way that reminds us of being born
into the light when we enter the main gathering place in the
building. This latter ambulatory is adorned with niches, which will
contain artwork depicting the cycle of saints and facets of the
liturgical year.
The baptistery is designed to reflect the older Christian
tradition of baptism by immersion in living (moving) waters. The
descent into the baptismal waters was viewed by the earliest
Christians as going down into the tomb, the death of Christ, and
coming out, rising to new life with Him. The baptistery is located at
the entrance to the central gathering space, as it is through the
waters of baptism that we enter the community of the church. The
upper bowl of the font, from which the water flows, is also the
container for holy water from which we bless ourselves as we
recall our baptism. The pool is deep enough to allow the
immersion of both children and adults in the fullest sense of the
baptismal washing. The bowl, spillway, and floor of the pool are
covered with a small mosaic tile in a pattern depicting moving
waters in colors of blue, green, white and gold, pointing again [to]
the “living waters” of baptism and rebirth. The Travertine
marble surrounding the pool is reminiscent of the desert
through which we pass to come to the living waters. The
living waters in the midst of the stone remind us of Moses
bringing water to save the people (Exodus 17:1-7).

vestíbulo, un símbolo de la transición y un pasaje de la asamblea
al lugar de culto. Entrar por la parte principal de encuentro, hay
dos pasillos; a la derecha cruzando la pila bautismal, símbolo de
la entrada en la comunidad de fe; a la izquierda, el paso por un
largo y obscuro pasillo que nos recuerda el haber nacido a la luz,
al entrar a la parte principal de culto del edificio. Este último está
adornado con nichos, que incluye arte que representa los santos
de la época y facetas del año litúrgico.
El Baptisterio está diseñado para reflejar la más vieja tradición
cristiana del bautismo por inmersión en aguas vivas
(movimiento). El descenso en las aguas bautismales fue visto por
los primeros cristianos como cayendo en la tumba, la muerte de
Cristo y al salir, subiendo a una nueva vida con él. El Baptisterio
se encuentra a la entrada del atrio central, como es a través de
las aguas del bautismo que entramos en la comunidad de la
iglesia. El recipiente superior de la fuente, de la cual fluye el
agua, es también el recipiente para agua bendita de la cual nos
bendecimos a nosotros mismos como recuerdo de nuestro
bautismo. La piscina es lo suficientemente profunda como para
permitir la inmersión de los niños y los adultos en el sentido pleno
del lavado bautismal. El tazón de la fuente, borde y piso de la
piscina están cubiertos con un azulejo de mosaico de smalti en
un patrón que representa las aguas en movimiento en colores de
azul, verde, blanco y oro, señalando otra vez [a] las "aguas vivas"
de bautismo y el renacimiento. El mármol travertino que rodea la
piscina es una reminiscencia del desierto a través del cual
pasamos para llegar a las aguas de vida. Las aguas de la
vida en medio de la piedras nos recuerdan a Moises
llevando el agua para salvar al pueblo (Éxodo 17:1-7).

CGS Quilt Ministry Thank You!
On February 14, our CGS quilt group sewed and quilted 50 quilts
that were donated to the 19th annual Interfaith Quilting Bee. The quilts
were given to Northwest Assistance Ministries and will be distributed to
families and individuals served by NAM, included Meals on Wheels,
Interfaith Hospitality Network, Domestic Violence Programs and the
Children’s Clinic. The quilts comfort the recipients and gives them a
sense of security that someone cares about them. So thanks to all the
quilters, your talent and generosity is amazing! Our quilting ministry
will resume our weekly sewing sessions on Tuesday, March 17 –
everyone is invited to join us. Your donations of cotton quilt fabric are

LENTEN PROJECT – Please prayerfully continue to support our Lenten Project, Casa Juan Diego and
our parish playground. Donations can be placed in the brown church on the Altar. Funds will be distributed
after Easter. In addition, our Early Childhood Program will be collecting school supplies for Casa Juan
Diego, our elementary faith formation is collecting canned meats, and our senior’s are collecting adult
diapers, wipes and wheelchairs, canes and walkers. Thank you in advance for your generosity.

Our program was acknowledged by Interfaith Care Partners for ten years of
offering compassion and care to families, not only in our parish, but in our community. Some of our team
members have been committed to this ministry for the entire ten years. What a blessing you are to the families
that you serve. Another thank you to Knights of Columbus, several members have recently started to serve on the
team. The preschoolers and staff from our Early Childhood Program continue to participate in our Gathering
Place and bring energy and enthusiasm to the day. Thank you everyone for giving so much of your time and
talent to answer the Gospel call of serving others. Over the last ten years we have had 79 volunteers, have
served 151 families, and have provided 24,196 hours of respite care for care givers. God Bless you all for continued service to our
parish! Our next Gathering Place is May 7th please contact the Social Ministry office for information.

Triumph of the Eucharist—The Museum of Fine Arts is hosting this
exhibition by Flemish painter Peter Paul Rubens from the early 1620’s. It
features paintings & large tapestries based on his paintings emphasizing
the Blessed Sacrament. The exhibit continues through May 10, 2015.
Entrance to the exhibition is included with the museum admission,
museum members receive free general admission & Thursdays are free.
