14th Sunday In Ordinary Time
Last Sunday, Jesus rebuked James and John
for wanting to “call down fire from
heaven” (Luke 9:54–55) on an unwelcoming
town. As he sends forth disciples today, Jesus
again forbids retaliation against non-receptive
listeners (10:10–11), showing us how to be
Jesus’ “missionaries of mercy” this Jubilee
Year of Mercy. Like the first disciples, we are
sent not to proclaim ourselves but Jesus. As
Jesus sent them in pairs, so are we also to
work together in the community of the Church.
We often describe the Church as Isaiah
describes Jerusalem in today’s first reading,
our comforting, nurturing Mother (Isaiah
66:13). So, going forth gently, like lambs
among wolves (Luke 10:3), we share
comforting peace, nurturing food and drink
(Luke’s image for Eucharist), and Jesus’
healing promise of unfailing, unconditional
mercy (10:5, 7, 9). Thus Jesus bids us
proclaim the kingdom of God by showing what
God’s kingdom looks like in action. “Go,
preach the Gospel,” Pope Francis’ saintly
namesake of Assisi is said to have instructed
his first friars, “and when necessary, use
words!”

spread prosperity over Jerusalem like a
river, and the wealth of nations like an
overflowing torrent (Isaiah 66:10-14c).

the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ
(Galatians 6:14-18).
Gospel. Jesus sends his disciples out in pairs to
bring his peace and proclaim the kingdom of
God (Luke 10:1-12, 17-20) [1-9].

El pasado domingo, Jesús reprendió a
Santiago y Juan por querer hacer “bajar fuego
del cielo” (Lucas 9:54–55) a un pueblo que no
los recibió. Hoy, al enviar discípulos, Jesús
también les prohíbe represalias contra
quienes no los escuchan (10:10–11),
mostrándonos cómo ser los “discípulos de
misericordia” de Jesús este Año Jubilar de la
misericordia. Como los primeros discípulos,
somos enviados no a proclamarnos nosotros
sino a Jesús. Así como Jesús los envió de dos

YEAR OF MERCY EVENTS
The next event, on July 31, the XVIII Sunday in Ordinary Time, will be the Jubilee for
Young People during the World Youth Day in Krakow, Poland. There will be a Special
Blessing at all the Sunday Masses on that weekend.
On September 3, the XXIII Sunday in Ordinary Time, the day before the canoniza on of
Mother Teresa of Calcu a, we will be celebra ng the Jubilee for Workers and
Volunteers of Mercy. We are having a Gra tude Dinner to honor those who serve in
the different Ministries of our parish.
On September 25, the XXVI Sunday in Ordinary Time, we will be celebra ng the Jubilee
for Catechists. It will be the Cateche cal Sunday and ac vi es on this day will be
organized by the Religious Educa on School (RES).
On October 8 and 9, we will be celebra ng the Marian Jubilee. This will be the weekend
a er the Feast of Our Lady of the Rosary. On this weekend, we will recognize all our
Marian Ministries.
On November 6, the XXXII Sunday in Ordinary Time, we will be having the Jubilee for
Prisoners. We will have an event organized to comfort the imprisoned.
On November 20, the Solemnity of our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe, we will
be having the Closing of the Holy Doors in the Dioceses of the World. We will have a
special Mass as we conclude the Jubilee of Mercy and our role as a Pilgrimage church.

Statement from Most Reverend José H. Gomez Archbishop of Los Angeles o
n U.S. Supreme Court Decision in United States v. Texas
Our nation’s ongoing failure to address the immigration crisis is a humanitarian tragedy.
For more than a decade, state and local governments, Congress, the President, the courts —
and now the highest court in the land — all have failed in their responsibilities to address this
issue.
In the wake of today’s U.S. Supreme Court decision, I call on President Obama and Congress
to agree to halt deportations pending the outcome of the national elections this fall. This would
be a humanitarian gesture that would provide temporary relief and peace of mind to millions of
our brothers and sisters, including millions of children.
Now is once more the time for moral leadership and political courage. We need to reject all
those who would exploit this issue for their own partisan advantage — and we should be clear
that both parties continue to be guilty of this.
We need comprehensive immigration reform now. This is not a matter of politics, it is a
matter of defending human rights and protecting human dignity.
Immigration is about people. It is a sad sign of our political moment that we need to keep
reminding ourselves about this.
We are talking about brothers and sisters with faces and names and families and stories —
just like every one of us. Often their journey has been hard and they have suffered poverty,
exploitation and sorrow. Many have been forced to leave behind loved ones — parents,
spouses, children.
Immigration reform is an issue of conscience and national identity. We need to remember
where we came from. Almost every American is the son or the daughter of someone who came
to this country from somewhere else. Our humanity will be judged by our response to this new
generation of immigrants.
To our immigrant brothers and sisters who are suffering from the cruelty and uncertainty
caused by this broken immigration system: please know that the Catholic Church will never
abandon you. You are our family. We will continue to accompany you and support you and
defend your inalienable rights and dignity as children of God. I entrust all of you to the
maternal care of Our Lady of Guadalupe, the mother of Jesus and the mother of all of us.

Decisión de la Suprema Corte de EE.UU. en Estados Unidos v. Texas
El constante fracaso de nuestra nación para tratar la crisis de inmigración es una tragedia
humanitaria.
Por más de una década, los gobiernos estatales y locales, el Congreso, el Presidente, las

La reforma migratoria es un asunto de conciencia e identidad nacional. Necesitamos recordar

As declared by Pope Francis, December 8, 2015 through November 20, 2016 is an Extraordinary
Jubilee of Mercy. It is a very important milestone in the Church’s calendar.
We are publishing a Special Celebratory Handbook to highlight the celebration. The handbook will
contain a Parish Family Pictorial section of registered parishioners and pilgrims in the area who pass
through our Holy Door. In addition, the handbook will contain messages from local church dignitaries;
advertisements from friends, supporters and those who wish us well.
Make it a point to participate in this project by completing the coupon below. Pictures will be taken on
church grounds on Mondays, Wednesdays and Sundays.
