El Cabañal, de pueblo de
pescadores a barrio de Valencia
repleto de mitos y leyendas, ha
sido el lugar de residencia de
personajes ilustres valencianos
como el periodista y escritor
Vicente Blasco Ibáñez, hoy es
posible visitar allí su casa-museo
frente al mar.
El Cabañal, a fishing village that
became a Valencian neighbourhood
filled with myths and legends, has
been the residence of famous
Valencians such as journalist and
writer Vicente Blasco Ibáñez,
whose house-museum facing the
sea can be visited.
Work by artists like the Valencian Joaquín Sorolla or renowned
photographers such as Robert Frank from Switzerland
and Chris Clun from the UK have also been inspired by this
neighbourhood, the latter two who have even established their
homes in it. Picasso immortalized the fishermen’s boats in a
small painting and Hemingway and Orson Welles were very
fond of the restaurants in the area.

tomado el barrio como fuente de inspiración para su
obra, estableciendo incluso los dos últimos su residencia en
él. Picasso inmortalizó las barcas de los pescadores
en un cuadro de pequeño formato y Hemingway u Orson
Welles eran auténticos aficionados de la cocina de los
restaurantes de la zona.
And the truth is that the flavour of the streets flanked by
houses covered by colourful Valencian tiles, the authenticity
of lifelong local bars offering traditional products made with
care, the images of the everyday life of its inhabitants, who
can often be seen sitting on their chairs out on the street enjoying
the fresh air or discovering the fishermen getting up early to fish,
take us back to a different type of life immersed in the
middle of the city.

recubiertas de coloridos azulejos valencianos, la
autenticidad de los bares de barrio de toda la vida donde
se ofrecen tradicionales productos hechos con esmero, las
imágenes de la vida cotidiana de sus habitantes a quienes
es frecuente encontrarlos con sus sillas en la calle “tomando
la fresca” o descubriendo a los pescadores madrugando para
faenar, nos transportan a otro tipo de vida inmersa en
plena ciudad.
There, bars and restaurants like Casa Montaña, Casa
Guillermo, Bar La Pascuala, Bar La Peseta, Bar La Paca
or Casa Carmela are legendary for their tapas, XXL size
sandwiches, rice dishes cooked on wood-burning stoves and
their unique decor, turning them into places you must visit.
Allí ya son míticos los bares y restaurantes como Casa
Montaña, Casa Guillermo, Bar La Pascuala, Bar La Peseta,
Bar La Paca o Casa Carmela, donde sus tapas, bocadillos de
tamaño XXL, arroces cocinados a leña y singular decoración, los

That neighbourhood feeling that almost makes it feel like a village
is also present in its shops and in its market, the Cabañal
Market, famous for its fish stalls and the freshness of its fruit and
vegetables.
Esa esencia de barrio que es casi como un pueblo también
se vive en sus comercios y en su mercado, el de El Cabañal,
famoso por sus puestos de pescado y el frescor de sus frutas y
verduras.
The Maritime Holy Week (Semana Santa Marinera), one of
the festivities increasingly acclaimed by the Valencian people
and visitors, is celebrated in the neighbourhood’s streets. The
celebration depicts the moments of solemnity and jubilation of
the Passion of Christ through scenes represented by the more
than 3,000 members of the brotherhood that comprise take part.
These are days filled with festivities and colour that should not
be missed.
Por sus calles transcurre una de las festividades cada vez más
aclamadas por valencianos y visitantes, la Semana Santa
Marinera, que muestra los momentos de solemnidad y júbilo de
la pasión de Cristo a través de las escenas que representan los
más de 3.000 cofrades que la componen. Unos días cargados
de fiesta y color que vale la pena no perderse.

A unas calles de aquí, en la Calle
Caballeros, Chic Market se instala en

with the Old Town, where the Tapinería
Market surrounds around the square
that bears its name and the adjacent
streets. At this market, every two
weeks different Spanish and Valencian
designers can be found displaying their

Just a couple of blocks away, on the
Calle Caballeros, Chic Market is
situated in a small old palace where
you can see the remains of the old

Valencia is a multipurpose space with a bustling cultural
agenda of different styles and trends. Here are the highlights.
The Centro del Carmen is hosting “Evolution” an exhibition
on until 10 January, that features works by Miquel Barceló,
Antoni Tàpies, Fernando Zóval and by Valencian artists
such as Andreu Alfaro and Miquel Navarro. This is a
collection that the Aena Foundation is exhibiting at various
Spanish airports, and in Valencia pieces of art from the 50s
and 60s will be displayed, as well as examples of the evolution
of Spanish and Latin American art from those years.
El Centro del Carmen acogerá hasta el 10 de enero
la exposición “Evolución”, que contará con obra de
Miquel Barceló, Antoni Tàpies, Fernando Zóval o la de
valencianos como Andreu Alfaro y Miquel Navarro. Se trata
de una colección que la Fundación Aena expone en diversos
aeropuertos españoles y que en Valencia mostrará obras de los
años 50 y 60 y la evolución del arte español e iberoamericano
de esos años.
En el IVAM, hasta el 22 de noviembre Ana Peters muestra
la crítica feminista de la España de los sesenta en la exposición
“Ana Peters. Mitologías políticas y estereotipos femeninos en los
años 60”. El 24 de enero será el último día para ver la obra
de Gillian Wearing, ganadora del premio Turner en 1997, que
exhibirá una serie de videoinstalaciones, fotografías y esculturas
para abordar temas como la vilolencia, la incomunicación o
los traumas. Por su parte, Grete Stern ofrecerá del 3 de
diciembre al 3 de abril a través de sus fotografías sus
inquietudes sociales, sus aspiraciones y controversias.
At the IVAM, up until 22 November, Ana Peters is
presenting a feminist critique of Spain in the sixties through
her exhibition entitled “Ana Peters. Mitologías políticas y
estereotipos femeninos en los años 60” (“Ana Peters. Political
mythologies and female stereotypes in the 60s”. January 24
is the last day to see the work of Gillian Wearing, winner
of the Turner Prize in 1997, which showcases a series of
videos, photographs and sculptures to address issues such as
violence, isolation and trauma. Likewise, from 3 December to 3
April, Grete Stern will be presenting his social concerns,
aspirations and controversies through his photographs.
La Rambleta este otoño nos ofrece El Festival de Jazz &
Cooking entre el 6 y el 7 de noviembre, con música en
directo y cocina de vanguardia. Para un público de entre 2
y 4 años, el taller “Libros, esos objetos tan misteriosos”
aproximará a los pequeños a los libros haciéndoles maravillarse
por los textos y los tesoros que pueden encontrar en ellos.
También en el ámbito de la gastronomía, el 5 de noviembre
en “Desayuno con Maestros: Ricard Camarena”, el chef
hablará a 25 jóvenes de la clave de su evolución empresarial,
de la importancia de la innovación o de cómo ha de comunicar
un cocinero.
This autumn, La Rambleta brings the Jazz & Cooking
Festival to us on 6 and 7 November with live music and
avant-garde cuisine. The workshop entitled “Books,
mysterious objects” for an audience of kids between 2
and 4 years old, familiarizes the little ones with books, making
them wonder about the texts and treasures to be found in
them. In the culinary field, on 5 November, at “Breakfast
with Chefs: Ricard Camarena”, the chef will explain to
25 young people about the key to the way his business has
evolved, about the significance of innovating and about how a
chef needs to communicate.
Un clásico que no puede faltar en la agenda es la visita a la
Sala Sorolla del Museo de Bellas Artes San Pío V, el pintor
con mayor proyección internacional de Valencia y testigo de
una época de la ciudad a través de sus lienzos.
A classic not to be missed is a visit to the Sorolla Room
at the San Pio V Museum of Fine Arts. Sorolla is the most
internationally renowned Valencian painter and through his
paintings he is a witness to a bygone era of the city.

óperas de Macbeth de Giuseppe Verdi, Silla de Haëndel
y Samson et Dalila de Camille Saint Saëns. Será posible
también disfrutar en las salas del coliseo musical de las obras
de Juana de Arco en la Hoguera, El Sueño de una Noche
de Verano o Qué son las Nubes.
In the field of music, the Palau de les Arts stages Giuseppe
Verdi’s opera Macbeth, Handel’s Silla and Camille Saint
Saëns’ Samson and Delilah. The plays being staged at this
musical venue are Joan of Arc at the Stake, A Midsummer
Night’s Dream and Qué son las Nubes (What are the
clouds?)
El Palau de la Música nos traerá a “Star Wars en concierto”
de la mano de la Excelentia Pops Symphony Orchestra el
25 de noviembre, pondrá al piano a Jean-Yves Thibaudet
con obras de Schumann y Maurice Ravel el 26 de
noviembre. El el 22 de diciembre la audiencia disfrutará del
Concierto de Navidad: Todo Beethoven por la New York
Chamber Orchestra, el 29 de diciembre el Gran Concierto
de Año Nuevo por la Strauss Festival Orchestra ofrecerá
una selección de los mejores valses, polcas y marchas de
Strauss. El 9 de enero, Mitsuko Uchida estará al piano de
la Mahler Chamber Orchestra y el 16 de enero el Ballet
Nacional de Ucrania, Odessa, pondrá sobre el escenario
el Lago de los Cisnes.

piano accompanied by the Mahler Chamber Orchestra

Cascanueces del 16 al 18 de diciembre y la comedia vendrá
con Sister Act del 12 de febrero al 6 de marzo. El Teatro
Olympia permitirá ver a un Ricardo Darín inmerso en
“Escenas de la vida cotidiana” entre el 18 de noviembre
y el 6 de diciembre. Juan Tamariz llenará de ilusión y trucos
su espectáculo “Magia Potagia” de los días 7 y 8 de
diciembre. Del 9 al 13 del mismo mes, el texto “10 Negritos”
de Agatha Christie mantendrá en suspense hasta el final a
los espectadores y del 16 de diciembre al 17 de enero la
audiencia reirá a carcajadas con Josema Yuste en “Taxi”.
At the Teatro Principal, the Saint – Petersburg Classical
Ballet of Andrey Batalov will bring us the magic of The
Nutcracker from 16 to18 December. It will also be staging
comedy with Sister Act from 12 February to 6 March. The
Teatro Olympia will present a Ricardo Darín immersed
in “Escenas de la vida cotidiana” (Everyday life scenes)
from 18 November to 6 December. Juan Tamariz will fill his
show “Magia Potagia” with excitement and tricks on 7 and
8 December. From 9 to 13 December, Agatha Christie’s
thriller “10 Little Niggers” will keep the tension up right until
the end and from 16 December to 17 January the audience
can laugh out loud with Josema Yuste in “Taxi”.

Navidad en Valencia es clima mediterráneo, actividades en
familia muy lúdicas como la pista de patinaje de la Plaza
del Ayuntamiento, la feria de atracciones o Expojove y muy

Christmas in Valencia is Mediterranean weather, festive family
activities like skating in the Town Hall Square ring, going to
the fairground or to Expo jove, which can all be enjoyed, as
can those spiritual activities such as church services, Nativity
scene exhibitions and Christmas carols sung in churches in the
city, especially at the Cathedral. During Christmas, Valencia is
filled with the aroma of nougat and nuts, food markets display
products that can be savoured by just looking at them, the
streets are covered with red carpets and gardens turn red
with poinsettias. Ephemeral shops and markets fill the city and
its visitors with dreams. Moments of joy and family such as
Christmas Eve or New Year’s Eve are celebrated at the tables
of restaurants in hotels and other establishments across the
city, magic moments as the night before the arrival of the Three
Kings or the actual day of their arrival are lived on the city’s
streets during the Procession of the Three Kings, filled with
enthusiasm and colour. Make your dream come true and visit

Visit the Valencia City Hall: This is one of the city’s most
emblematic buildings and it crowns the square that bears its name.
Visiting the Crystal Hall or seeing the views from its balcony are

The 5k Jardí del Turia Circuit: The passion that Valencians feel
for running and for marathons is so evident and demand so high
that the private sector, through the Trinidad Alfonso Foundation,
has made this running track available to the public. It has a certified
surface, it is sign posted, there are areas for circuit training and
much more, so that some can train whilst others jog, walk or take
part in other activities.
Valencia Silk City 2016: UNESCO has chosen Valencia as
Silk City for 2016. The Valencian silk tradition dates back to the
eighth century, and is an industry that has lasted until today.
The Silk Exchange, the Colegio del Arte Mayor de la Seda,
Fallas and the Velluters neighbourhood are some of the remains
of this economic activity that we can still visit today.

prestigiosa revista británica Restaurant lo lleva incluyendo
en los últimos años en el ránking de The World’s 50 Best
Restaurants, ocupando el puesto 39 en el listado de 2015.
Quique Dacosta arrancó su sueño culinario en el restaurante “El
Poblet” en Denia, actualmente “Quique Dcosta Restaurante”. Hoy,
además, cuenta en Valencia con otros tres establecimientos,
El Poblet, con una Estrella Michelín, el gastro-bar Vuelve
Carolina y el bar de tapas Mercat Bar. Hizo esta fuerte apuesta
por la ciudad porque la mayor parte de sus clientes son de aquí
y siente Valencia como su propia ciudad. Dice que la dieta
mediterránea es una filosofía de vida que a él le influye en su estilo de
vida y en su cocina. El arroz es el ingrediente que más aprecia
de esta tierra, por el ingrediente en sí y por lo que representa para la
cultura y economía valenciana. Dacosta recomienda Valencia cada
día porque es una urbe abierta, bella y moderna, él la considera
única. El chef anima al visitante a comer en los lugares donde
hay excelencia, caminar por los mercados y calles, disfrutar
de la arquitectura de las fachadas, visitar los museos y
dejarse llevar por la historia. El recuerdo más bonito que guarda
de Valencia es cuando hizo de Rey Mago en las Navidades de
2013. Disfruta paseando por los Jardines del Turia, le gusta
perderse por la orilla del mar en la noche, considera que el clima
suave la hace idónea para ser visitada todo el año y aunque espera
no marcharse nunca de Valencia, en su maleta metería un
repertorio de sabores, aromas y recuerdos.

“Restaurant” - the prestigious British magazine has featured
him in recent years in the ranking of the world’s 50 Best
Restaurants, with a ranking of 39 in the 2015 list. Quique
Dacosta started his culinary dream at the “El Poblet” restaurant in
Denia, currently called “Quique DCosta Restaurante”. Today he also
has a further three restaurants in Valencia: El Poblet, which
has one Michelin star, Vuelve Carolina, a gastro bar and
Mercat Bar, a tapas bar. He made this strong commitment to the
city because most of his customers are from here and he feels that
Valencia is his own city. He says that the Mediterranean diet is a
philosophy of life that influences him in his lifestyle and in his cooking.
Rice is the ingredient he most appreciates from the area,
not only because of the ingredient itself but also because of what it
represents for Valencia’s culture and economy. Dacosta recommends
Valencia every day because it is an open, beautiful and
modern city, which he considers unique. The chef encourages
visitors to eat in places where there is excellence, to walk the
streets and markets, enjoy the architecture of the facades,
visit museums and be led by history. His most beautiful memory
of the city is when he dressed up as one of the three wise men during
Christmas 2013. He enjoys walking through the Turia Gardens,
likes to get lost along the sea shore at night, considers that the
city’s mild climate makes it ideal to visit all year long and although he
hopes to never leave Valencia, in his suitcase he would pack a
repertoire of flavours, aromas and memories.

El Centro Cultural Bancaja reúne 200 obras del maestro para mostrar al público cómo
influyeron en Picasso las obras que colgaban de grandes museos como el Louvre o el
Trocadero de artistas como Zurbarán, El Greco, Goya, Delacroix, Cézanne, Rembrandt, Rafael
o Gauguin y cómo él reinterpretó sus estilos en sus lienzos. Una interesante visión del proceso
creativo del autor que se podrá ver hasta el 2 de febrero de 2016. Además, habrá talleres para
escolares, familias, personas mayores, con discapacidad y riesgo de exclusión social.

Ubicada en un palacio gótico del siglo XIV, La Fundación Chirivella-Soriano se abre a la ciudad
para mostrar tanto el palacio de la familia Valeriola como la colección de arte privada ChrivellaSoriano. La colección, está formada de obras del Grupo Parpalló, El Paso, Equipo 57, Equipo
Realidad, Arroyo, Yturralde o Gordillo entre otros y es también sede de exposiciones temporales
como la actual, denominada “Construyendo Democracia” o las sucesivas ediciones de una de las
muestras de fotografía más prestigiosas en el ámbito internacional, el World Press Photo.

Gothic palace, Chirivella-Soriano Foundation is open to the city to show both the Valeriola family
palace as well as the Chirivella-Soriano private art collection. The collection consists of works
