JOSEPH April 24, 2016 From the Desk of Fr. Philip In our Catholic Tradition we are constantly encouraged to listen to the inward conversation of Jesus within our souls. In Psalm 85:9 we read, “I will listen for what God, the Lord, has to say”. If we do not develop this habit of listening to God, we will get used to listening to the world and buy into its ideologies. Naturally the world will not endorse listening to God which will contradict its liberal messages. One simple way to avoid this bad effect is to develop the habit of reading the Word of God frequently and listen to the Lord speaking to us through the Bible. Then we will have a spontaneous precaution against whatever the world is injecting into us contradicting the Lord’s message. Blessed is the soul who hears the Lord speaking within her, who receives the word of consolation from His lips. Blessed are the ears that catch the accent of divine whispering, and pay no heed to the murmurings of this world. Blessed are the ears that listen to the truth which teaches within. Blessed are the eyes which closes to the exterior worldly things and are fixed upon those which are interior. Blessed are they who develop the habit interior reflection and meditation, who try daily to prepare themselves more and more to understand the mysteries. Blessed are they who long to give their time to God and who cut themselves off from the hindrances of the world. Such people find more opportunities to serve the Lord either through the church or the various charities and humanitarian endeavors of the church. When we have such a devout attitude it becomes imperative upon us to devout our time, talent, and treasure for the glory of God and for improving the quality of life of God’s children in the world. It will not surprise us to notice that any time we are reluctant to participate in the devotional activities in the church, or are unwilling to get involved in the charitable programs of the church, we are under the influence of selfish worldly interests and we shut our hearts from listening to God’s voice speaking in our souls. Considering these reflections, if we close door of our senses to the world’s distractions, we can hear what the Lord our God speaks within us. We can hear from the Lord “ I am your salvation, I am your peace and your life, remain with me and your find peace. Dismiss all passing things and seek the eternal”. We become aware of the fact that temporal things are snares. All these creatures can do nothing good for us if we are deserted by the creator. We have to learn to leave these things and make ourselves pleasing and faithful to our creator so that we may attain the true happiness at the end of this life. It is our responsibility to train our children the habit of listening to the Lord speaking in us. It will help them to recognize the importance of obeying God and not to follow the promptings of the world in our daily activities. It will encourage them to be more deeply committed to the faith and the faith community than to the world and its enticing agenda. God bless you all. While millions of faithful simply went underground and hung on for the ride, even the seven-day week was demolished along with the names of the months. What emerged from the chaos was the Napoleonic Code of 1792 governing church life, and therefore marriage law in France, French Canada, and elsewhere. The code makes civil marriage mandatory for all citizens. In practice, when the faithful marry, they go first to the City Hall. There, the mayor performs the civil marriage, usually accompanied by a patriotic speech about the duties of the citizen, particularly in the rearing of children. Then, typically after a lunch, everyone goes off to change into more festive attire for the wedding liturgy, featuring consent, the exchange of rings, and the nuptial blessing. Sadly, only a minority of citizens today celebrate even the civil form of the rite, and a fraction of those continue on to the church. For those who do celebrate the liturgy of marriage, however, there is near certainty that the spouses are active worshipers, and that they will later present their children for baptism.—Rev. James Field, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co. TRUE CHRISTIAN COMMUNITY SAINTS AND SPECIAL OBSERVANCES Can you imagine a world such as the one put before us in today’s scripture readings? Communities of believers everywhere would support and encourage one another and be identified as Christians by the way they love each other. It would be a world with no tears, no death and mourning, no crying out in pain. “Behold, I make all things new,” we hear the Son of God say in the second reading from the book of Revelation (21:5). Sunday: Fifth Sunday of Easter; Monday: St. Mark Wednesday:Administrative Professionals Day Thursday: St. Peter Chanel; St. Louis Grignion de Montfort Friday: St. Catherine of Siena; Saturday: St. Pius V Is this world of John’s vision only imaginary? Are these CHURCH faithful followers for whom Jesus prayed only a savior’s dream? Today they are put before us as a worthy goal. “Church” in Greek means convocation, or assembly in How much closer can we come to this vision of a true Latin, because all are called to be members of it. Christian community in our lives today? Copyright © J. S P aluch —St. —Fray Gilberto Cavazos-Glz, OFM, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.
