PREMIO INTERNACIONAL DE EL DUQUE DE EDINBURGH
Estamos progresando con el Premio Internacional en el colegio. Doce estudiantes del grado 9
han completado los requisitos para el Premio Bronce. Otros siete estudiantes de grado 9 están
entrenando para el viaje de aventuras, y veinticuatro nuevos estudiantes de grado 8 están
empezando el premio y que están en proceso de inducción.
A fines de agosto y principios de septiembre, el primer grupo de estudiantes completaron los
viajes de aventura en la zona de Porcón. En primer lugar hay un viaje de práctica, para poner a
prueba todas las habilidades necesarias: aguante, búsqueda de la ruta, lectura de mapa y cocina.
Luego está el viaje final, el viaje de clasificación, en la que los participantes muestran más
autoconfianza y fuerza.
El número máximo de alumnos en un grupo es de siete, lo que significa que tuvimos que organizar
cuatro viajes. Los estudiantes se dieron cuenta que la cantidad de cosas que llevaban para el
último viaje se redujo. Se llevaron sólo lo esencial, con el fin de mantener el menor peso en sus
mochilas. Los profesores acompañaron a los estudiantes caminando detrás de los grupos y todos
acamparon en el mismo lugar. Hay desafíos ya que los mapas que tenemos no están totalmente
actualizados, lo que significa que en algunos caminos ha crecido mucha vegetación. Incluso
Google Earth puede ser un poco engañoso. Sin embargo, los estudiantes sabían qué
precauciones tomar, y tuvieron la flexibilidad y perseverancia para superar algunos desafíos para
hallar la ruta. El camino a veces puede ponerse bastante peligroso a través de las tierras
forestales. Además, caminar desde 2800m a 3500m es un fuerte desafío, debido a la altitud,
sobre todo cuando se lleva carga.
La buena noticia es que seis estudiantes de noveno grado van a continuar con el nivel Silver
Award (Plata). Ellos son: Adriana Horna, Diana Blanco, Diana Huamán, Rosa Inés Pajares,
Cedric Guerrero y Sebastián Díaz.
Los participantes en el Premio Internacional harán constar que esto aumenta el poder de
perseverancia, organización y autoconfianza, y abre nuevos mundos para explorar dentro de uno
mismo.
THE DUKE OF EDINBURGH´S INTERNATIONAL AWARD
We are progressing with the International Award in the school. Twelve students in grade 9
have completed the requirements for the Bronze Award. Another seven students in grade
9 are undergoing training for the adventurous journey, and twenty-four new students in
grade 8 are starting the Award and undergoing the induction process.
In late August and early September, the first group of students completed the adventurous
journeys in the area of Porcón. First there is a practice journey, to test all the skills needed:
stamina, route finding, map reading, cooking. Then there is the final journey, the qualifying
journey, in which participants show more self-reliance and strength.
The maximum number of students in a group is seven, meaning we had to organize four
journeys. The students found that they reduced the amount of stuff they were carrying for
the last journey. They took only the essentials, in order to keep the weight of their
rucksacks down. Teachers shadowed the students, walking behind the groups, and all
camped in the same place.
There are challenges since the maps we have are not fully up to date, meaning that some
paths have become overgrown. Even Google Earth can be a bit misleading. However, the
students knew what precautions to take, and had the flexibility and persistence to
overcome some route finding challenges. The walking at times is quite rough, through the
forest lands. Also, walking from 2800m to 3500m is a strong challenge, because of the
altitude, especially when carrying a pack.
It´s great news is that six students in grade nine are going to continue to the Silver Award
level. They are: Adriana Horna, Diana Blanco, Diana Huaman, Rosa Ines Pajares, Cedric
Guerrero and Sebastian Díaz.
