amigable a jóvenes.

s gun violence keeps increasing in Chicago, a group of
students from Ames Middle
School helped make a change for a safer
city. The students created a community
safety report in which they outlined their
recommendations on what needs to be
changed in order to become a safer and
less violent community. Four student representatives met with Alderman Maldonado on April 17 to present the report, which
was approved.
“I feel that us as kids make a difference so
our generation won’t be a violent one,” said
Jasmine Marchan, one of the four students
who presented the report to the alderman.
“It was a great opportunity because not a
lot of kids our age get to meet him.”
The students created the report by using data collected from the 2012 Peace
and Leadership Council (PLC) that identified what areas in the community students felt safe and unsafe about. The

very excited that their voices were heard
and look forward to how their recommendations will make their community safer,”
said Karla Castilla, Ames Peace and Leadership Council coordinator.
Before the report was brought to the
alderman, it was presented to the Ames
Middle School principal, Turon Ivy, who
encouraged the students to work hard.
“Every time that we have tendency to
turn on the television, we see something
about violence, we see something that affects our youth, our families, our neighborhoods, our communities,” Ivy told his
students. “What you guys are doing right

in our schools, but also in the community.”

El Gob. Quinn da vigor a la
Iniciativa al Senado 1894
Compilado por Periódico EXTRA
trad.

Governor Quinn signs
Senate Bill 1894
Compiled by Extra Newspaper
Property tax relief legislation developed
by Cook County Assessor Joseph Berrios was
signed into law by Governor Pat Quinn at a
ceremony on April 23 on Chicago’s southwest
side. Senate Bill 1894 is designed to soften the
blow caused by the sunset of the seven percent
Expanded Homeowner Exemption, which was
originally designed to provide relief from rising
home values before the economic downturn.
Speaking at the signing ceremony, Assessor Berrios said: “Today we celebrate
a clear victory for homeowners. Although
homeowners will continue to automatically
receive the benefits of the standard Homeowner Exemption when the seven percent
provision expires, they will see increases in
their bills when it is gone. This legislation
will offset this loss by increasing the savings currently received from the Homeown-
er and Senior Exemptions.”
Berrios thanked the Governor and the members of the state legislature for their support of
the measure, which will provide savings by further reducing the equalized assessed valuation
of an eligible residence. Under the bill, the standard Homeowner Exemption will be increased
from 6,000 dollars to 7,000 dollars for Cook
County homeowners. The Senior Exemption
amount will rise from 4,000 dollars to 5,000
dollars for seniors statewide.
The seven percent measure was originally implemented and phased in by triennial
district starting with the City of Chicago. It
will expire on second-installment tax bills
City of Chicago homeowners will receive
this summer. North suburban homeowners
will lose all seven percent savings on second-installment tax bills in 2014 and south
suburban homeowners will lose all savings
on second-installment bills in 2015. n

The Student Conservation Association in
Chicago is a group of college and high school
students from Little Village, Austin, North
Lawndale, and Archer Heights communities.
The association works with the youth to provide job readiness skills, as well as a sense of
stewardship in their environment and communities by exposing them to environmental concepts, ideals, education, and applying
their skills with hands on experience.
“We have been performing conservation
effort within the Forest Preserve District of
Cook County, as well as helping promote
community green space in Little Village
and Pilsen with creating Pocket Parks and
renovating existing gardens,” said Samuel
Vergara, program manager for The Student
Conservation Association.
On Earth Day, April 21, the association had 64
7
volunteers who helped with gardening maintenance, painting, and mulching three existing
gardens within the community of Little Village.
The project was in collaboration with Enlace
Chicago’s Neighborhood Block Clean-up.
“Any community garden in any neighborhood is out in understanding our place in
the environment,” said Vergara.
The organization renovated a garden in
Pilsen to meet the need of adults with special
needs. “They enjoy the garden but physically
they can’t perform most of the gardening,”
said Vergara. “We are raising the flower beds
so that they have easier access to gardens to
smell the flowers, or harvest their veggies!
We are also installing a rain barrel to help with
water storage, and a compost bin to help create fertile soil for the beds.”

Estudiantes extranjeros
necesitan una reforma
Compilado por Periódico EXTRA
trad.
comerciantes y ciudadanos.
“Tenemos la oportunidad de traer las
grandes mentes de grandes investigadores a Illinois. Es una locura traerlos y
enviarlos a casa.…
hacen contribuciones cruciales y dan a
EE.UU. e Illinois sello de competitivos e
innovadores. Según la Sociedad pro una
Nueva Economía Estadounidense, a nivel

Foreign students need a reform
compiled by EXTRA Newspaper
On April 20, leaders in business and
education gathered to welcome the introduction of the new Senate immigration
bill and to sign an open letter urging the
IL Congressional delegation to chart a
new path for Illinois by supporting common sense immigration reform. The event
was organized by the Illinois Business Immigration Coalition (IBIC) and took place
at the Chicago Field Museum.
“It is incredibly frustrating, as a CEO, to
have to look a motivated, talented young
person in the eye and tell her that, as perfect as she is for my company, I cannot hire
her simply because she was brought here
as a child. It defies American values of hard
work and fairness, and it is economically
stupid,” said John Rowe, university regent
and chairman.
Speakers called for common sense immigration reform legislation that will allow foreign-born students to leverage their talent
and their ideas to help make Illinois com-
petitive and that will help rebuild the Illinois
economy, provide Illinois companies with
the high and low-skilled talent they need,
and promote the integration of immigrants
as workers, consumers, entrepreneurs and
citizens.
“We have the opportunity to bring the
great minds of great researchers to Illinois.
It’s crazy to bring them here and then send
them home…These are the ones who will
reinvent our society over and over again,
with new ideas that create new companies,
which hire new employees, who pay taxes,
which support schools, which educate a
whole new generation ready to begin the
cycle again,” said Chris Kennedy, chairman
University of Illinois Board of Trustees.
Foreign-born students make crucial contributions to make the U.S. and Illinois’ competitive and with innovative edge. According to the Partnership for a New American
Economy, nationwide more than three out
of every four patents produced by the top10 patent-producing universities in 2011 had
an immigrant inventor. n

Dos Veces Placentero
Twice As Pleasing
-
Located in the northwestern region of the State of Guerrero, IxtapaZihuatanejo is set against the green backdrop of the sheltering Sierra
Madre del Sur mountains, in an area that runs along some 17 miles of
scenic coastline with sandy beaches, quiet lagoons, scalloped coves,
rocky bluffs and offshore islets. It has an exceptional climate of more
than 330 sunny days a year and a 82 degree F average temperature.
Although many syllables confirm its name, learn how to pronounce it
correctly, it’s: “eeks-tah-pa-see-wah-tah-ne-ho.”
Zihuatanejo, a fishing port for centuries, embraced by Zihuatanejo Bay, retains its oldMexico charm. Just ten minutes up the coast, Ixtapa is a modern world-class resort. Together they comprise one tropical destination that is indeed twice as pleasing.
Most Ixtapa hotels are located in the Hotel Zone along Palmar Beach (just across
the avenue from the village-like shopping “plazas”). One major hotel is nearby on its
own cove, and three others are just up the coast at Playa Linda. Zihuatanejo hotels are
smaller. They range from economy to grand luxury properties situated on La Ropa Beach
or overlooking the Bay.

Olmos emocionado, descorazonado

padre (Lou Diamond Phillips). “Filly Brown”
fue codirigida y coescrita por Michael Olmos,
uno de los cuatro hijos de Edward.
EXTRA: ¿Cómo fue reencontrarse con Lou
Diamond Phillips por vez primera desde
“Stand and Deliver” hace 25 años?
Edward James Olmos: (Ríe) Fue un sueño
hecho realidad. Fue una forma genial de
avanzar y verle y regocijarle y regocijarse
actuación desde “Stand and Deliver” o “La
Bamba”.
Aprende a escribir.

In the independent film “Filly Brown,” actress Gina Rodriguez plays Majo Tonorio, a

“Filly Brown” was co-directed and co-written

Edward James Olmos: (Laughs) It was a
dream come true. It was a great way to move
forward and see him and rejoice in our lives.
He gives a tremendous performance in this
film. It might be his best performance since
“Stand and Deliver” or “La Bamba.”
As a father, was there a specific time in Michael’s
life where you sensed that the film industry might
be something he wanted to be a part of?
I think all my kids looked at this lifestyle
and kind of liked it. [Michael] came to me
right out of high school and said, “I’d like to
graduate from Columbia and be a director.”
I said, “OK. Learn how to write. Take the writing program.” So, he did and he came out of

going to be right on schedule.
Is the music in “Filly Brown” a genre
we’d find you playing on your car radio?
Oh, yeah. (Laughs) I really like it. A lot of
the actors that are in the movie are really
strong rappers. Chingo Bling is fantastic in
the movie. He’s a great rapper, songwriter
and entrepreneur.
Talk to me about Jenni Rivera and what
you felt when you found out about her
passing last year?
It’s still one of the hardest situations that has
ever hit me because of the sheer shock of it. I
mean, Selena was bad enough, but I didn’t make
a movie with her. Here we are at our first press
junket for “Filly Brown” and the movie is coming
out and everyone is happy and Jenni isn’t here.
There’s a huge hole. It brings a tear to my eye

Howard Moore gets a contract extension
by Gabe Salgado
Last week, the University of Illinois at Chicago announced that the head coach of the UIC
Flames men’s basketball team, Howard Moore,
was given a three-year contract extension. The
terms of the deal were not disclosed.
This new contract will keep Coach Moore
on the sidelines of the UIC Pavilion through
the 2017-2018 season. When Moore was
hired as the Flames head coach back in
2010, he inherited quite a “mess”. He replaced long time head-coach Jimmy Collins
who had been in charge of the men’s hoops
program since the mid 90’s.
A change was needed after Collins went
through a six-year postseason drought, consecu-
tive losing seasons, and was starting to lose his
edge in the recruiting department. This was especially true when it came to Chicago area recruits.
Howard Moore’s first two seasons at the
helm were not pretty - the Flames went a
combined 15-46 during the 2010-2011, and
2011-2012 seasons. But as is the case with
most new coaches, the third year was finally
the turning point for the UIC program. Moore
has restored UIC’s ability to land local recruits. He has also managed to find unknown
talent and turn them into solid role players.
In 2013, the Flames won their first postseason game in school history when they
defeated Chicago State in the first round of
this year’s College Insider Tournament. They
also won their first Horizon League Tourna-
ment game since 2009 when they eliminated Cleveland State in the first round of this
year’s conference tournament. The Flames
finished the 2012-2013 season with a 18-16
record, their first winning record since the
2008-2009 season.
Moore will have to replace his three
best players who are all graduating this
year. Guards Gary Talton and Daniel
Barnes, and center Josh Crittle, were the
heart and soul of the UIC Flames this year.
These three seniors are moving on with
the next phase of their lives and they will
be hard to replace.
In the meantime, it is good to know that UIC’s
athletic department has made a long term investment in their current head coach. n

No doubt about it, sales is for someone who is creative and very intuitive about people. Have you
been doing sales or public relations? What about some kind of service position that requires you to
be assertive and really nice?… do your friends consider you rather gutsy and out there? We work
very hard for four days a week – Monday through Thursday selling advertising for our two weekly
newspapers, our online newsletter, and web presence. One of our newspapers is bilingual (Spanish/
English) and the other one is in English.

What you need for this position is a good command of using the telephone as your sales opportunity; a disciplined approach at coming into the office, and attending all training sessions; a valid
driver’s license and vehicle to use for appointments; and the ability to create relationships that
helps build our business and the business of our clients.
This is not easy stuff and we are in the most critical time of the newspaper business. We expect
and need creative input, and leadership to help us get to the next step in our industry. If you were
a leader in school or another business, maybe this position is for you. EMAIL: [email protected]
de vender; un alcance disciplinado yendo a la oficina, y asistir a todas las sesiones de adiestramiento;
EMAIL: [email protected]
