GRAN CANARIA
EXCURSION: MOYA
Little Village great views
The travel guides describe the beautiful and
contrasting Gran Canaria as mini contintent with
an impressive biodiversity. 43 percent of the
area of the island is protected because of their
flora and fauna. A worthwhile excursion is a trip
to Moya and the trip to the special nature reserve Los Tilos de Moya.
8
viva Pocket ENGLISH n° 7 • 15. 10. 2015
About thirty kilometers west of
Las Palmas is the homonymous
capital of Moya. You drive along
the curvy, steadily uphill road GC75. The hospitable residents welcome all their guests. You have to
walk around the beautiful church
"Iglesia de Candelaria" because
at the rear you will have a spectacular view into the depths of the
ravines.

You should definitely also visit the
museum Tomás Morales just opposite the church. The birthplace
of the great Canary chroniclers
(1884 - 1921) was converted into
a museum. It shows pictoresque
how life at the time of the turn
of the century high society. You
can see those days a lot of inter10
esting details, such. As furniture,
accessories, books, photographs,
typewriter and a promotional
catalog anno. The library also
paintings by important representatives of the Canarian Modernism
can be seen.
If you should take a rest now we
would recommend to taste the
regional specialty Bizcochas Lustrados.

The Special Nature Reserve Los
Tilos de Moya is one of the most
beautyful on the island and is located in the Parque Rural de Doramas. The reason for the opulent
vegetation is the mild climate,
the abundance of water and a
natural phenomenon. The trade
winds from the northeast at a rate
of an average of 22 km/h provide
the area throughout the year with
moisture or rain. Here the interplay of two tendencies come to
bear, because the bottom is very
viva Pocket ENGLISH n° 7 • 15. 10. 2015
humid and the overlying is dry
and keeps the clouds stable on
the lower bottom, similar to a
greenhouse effect.
About two kilometers southwards
from the village of Moya you
reach a sign Barranco de Laurel
where you turn left and reach the
parking area Los Tilos de Moya
after about 500 meters.

Moya, a road leads along the ravines and after about two kilometers you reach the sign "Barranco
de Laurel". From here you take
a left and still leaves about 500
meters up to a parking lot.
When leaving the car you will
be overwhelmed from the fresh
clean air and the lush green in
all imaginable shades. A sign
Ruta dirección Moya shows you

the start for the approximately
1.8 kilometer trail. Only the first
part is to cope over stone stairs
and then an almost level moves
through the undergrowth, past
bushes, shrubs and shade trees.
It can be seen almost no square
meter of ground, so close up

The laurels can reach a height of
up to twenty meters. During your
tour you will be accompanied by
singing birds and the lapping it a
watercourse. Gorgeous!

HEALTH
Consulting a Doctor
The medical services are at
European level. Nevertheless
the language barrier might lead
to problems from time to time in
the public services such as the
Centro de Salud. For their services we recommend to take an
interpreter with you.
You can use their servie free of
charge if there exists a treaty
between the social insurance
companies of both countries.
You must show your social insurance card at the reception desk.
Private doctors usually speak
english too, especially in the
tourist areas. You may use their
services any time. If it is a private
doctor who has an agreement
with your insurance company,
you do not have to pay or you
get a refund when you return
home. Ask for the invoice. We
recommend that you ask the
doctor before treatment what is
included in what you must pay.
20
DRUGSTORES
Drugstores (Farmacias) you will
identify by the green cross. When
the lights of that cross are blinking the pharmacy is open. If not,
you usually will find a note on the
door stipulating the nearest open
emergency pharmacy.
• Opening hours (generally)
Workingdays 9.00 to 13.00 h and
16.30 - 20.00 h.
• A detailed plan for emergency
pharmacies is found on the internet (in Spanish)
www.coflp.org/guardias.php
FREE SMARTPHONE APP
„TRADASSAN
We have found a very interesting
free smartphone app called „Tradassan“ that also works offline. It
is a translator for medical terms
from Spanish into English. The
original name is: „Traductor para
la Sistencia Sanitaria“.

The water levels at Gran Canaria
have a difference from one up to
three meters. It is dangerous to
swim in running off water. In fact,
it is dangerous to swim during
the time between high tide and
low tide (suction). If the red flag is
up it is strictly forbidden to enter
the sea.
Note for Tide Table from page 52
Times are for Las Palmas. For other
regions on Gran Canaria, please note
the time differences of:
Maspalomas -15 minutes
Arguineguin -10 min.
Playa de Mogán -5min.
WEATHER
The climate on the Canary Islands is usually lovely. But especially in winter it could vary in
Gran Canaria. For example it is
sunny in Mogán Playa but raining in Las Palmas.
Anyway, for trips we recommend taking along suitable
clothes and checking the
weather forecast.

CULTURE HINTS
NUDISM - TOPLESS?
In Spain nudism is not prohibited.
However, it is common to use the
designated areas. This is also
valid for Maspalomas. Please respect the cultural and religious
values of the guest nation and
its people. Please undress only
in those areas. Bathing clothes
should not be worn on streets,
in towns or in restaurants (only
at the beach or in the hotel pool
area). The same applies to topless.
TIPPING
The Canary Islands is low income compared to the northern
European countries. Tipping respresents an importang part of
the salary. Please tip generously
for good service.
PETS IN CARS
In Gran Canaria pets are permitted in cars adequately secured.
This means, that they must be in
a separate, safety area divided
with a net from the driving area
or with a car harness (seat belt for
dogs).
Thousands of pets in the Canary
Islands are abandones and therefore live in very bad conditions
without food and water. Tara
Animal Respect Association and
their volunteers rescue every day
dogs and cats as many other organizations. They try to rehome
these pets also in other countries
throughout Europe. All animals
possess chips, international animal passports and up-to-date
immunisations.

COMPLAINT FORM
With every purchase ask for an
invoice signed and stamped by
the shop. In case of a complaint
you will need this purchasing invoice.
Should it come to a disagreement you have the right to address your complaint to the consumer protection department
called OMIC (Oficina Municipal
de Información al Consumidor).
They usually can be found in
every county.
To file your complaint you have
to ask for the formal complaint
form (Hoja de Reclamaciones).
Every shop must provide this
form upon demand even in
street markets.
Every party addresses the complaint according to the personal
point of view. This form consists
of one original sheet and two
copies. The customer receives
the original and the green
copy and the remaining copy is
for the seller.
Important Note: The form must
58
be filled in and signed by both
disagreeing parties. If the seller
refuses to hand out the complaint form by law you have the
