ere at California State University,
Stanislaus we believe that parents
are a valuable resource in helping the
university reach its goal of fostering
student success. That is why this academic
year we have launched a new program
designed especially for parents of our
students. This program includes a parents
association that you can join. Members of
the Stanislaus Parent Association (SPA) will
receive information about CSU Stanislaus,
including this newsletter, monthly e-news,
campus news, event information, important
dates and deadlines, and services available
to students. Additionally, SPA members
will receive information about parent and
family events on campus and will have the
opportunity to volunteer or help plan the
events. Most importantly, the Stanislaus
Parent Association is dedicated to helping
your son or daughter be successful in
college. Members will receive information,
tips, and resources on student development
issues. There is no cost to join.
If you would like to sign up for the
Stanislaus Parents Association, please fill
out the form in the newsletter and mail it
to our office. Or, you can call the parents
hotline at (209) 664-6632. Please sign up
for the Stanislaus Parents Association to
ensure that you will receive this newsletter
in the future. We hope you enjoy this

Bienvenidos Padres!
E
n la Universidad Estatal de California,
Stanislaus, creemos que los padres son
un recurso muy valioso que ayuda a la
universidad a alcanzar su meta de esforzar
el éxito estudiantíl. Por eso, este año se
estrenó un programa nuevo diseñado
especialmente para padres de estudiantes
de nuestra universidad. El programa
incluye una asociación de padres. Al unirse
a la asociación tendrá la oportunidad
de ser parte de una red de padres que
sostienen la misión de la universidad y
contribuyen al éxito académico de nuestros
estudiantes. Los miembros de la Asociación
de Padres recibirán información acerca de
la Universidad de Stanislaus, incluyendo
este boletín, noticias, acontecimientos,
fechas importantes, e información sobre
la asistencia que los estudiantes tienen
disponible. Adicionalmente, miembros de la

worry? If you answered “yes” to any of these questions
you are not alone. The first semester of University Life is a

grades! Some of you may experience daily calls or emails, while
others have seen a trend of decreasing contact with their child.
As your child spreads his or her wings, he or she is more likely
to explore, test, and distance themselves from things they have
always known. In the end they will come back, more mature and
hopefully wiser.
The initial emersion into resident life is done and our
residents are discovering that their newfound freedom comes
with responsibility and consequences. When engaging your
resident keep in mind that he or she is being bombarded with
new experiences and while he or she may not let you know, your
gentle guidance and understanding will go a long way to helping
as he or she strives to obtain the perfect balance of academic
excellence and social engagement. Be aware that your child may
be thinking, but not expressing, the following:
• Too much fun can be bad, very bad – “I’m having a hard
time committing to my studies. The lure of the TV, internet,
basketball game, and my friends makes it very easy to say, ‘I’ll
do it later.’ My grades aren’t very good.”

not to procrastinate ~ “My paper is due tomorrow

and I haven’t gotten past my initial research. I need to stay
focused. I can’t believe I procrastinated this long! I need at
least a B on this paper to pass my class.”
• Discovering Differences...Community Living – “My
roommate and I are very different people. We’re like night and
day. I want to bridge our differences because I think we could
be friends, but I’m not sure how I should begin.”
• Shell, what Shell?...Embracing a Complete University
Experience ~ “I want to have some fun, but all I seem to do
is study, study, study. Residential living isn’t what I thought it
would be. It’s a lot harder to meet people than I thought. I’m
always studying and watching everyone else have fun.”
• Gaining Respect by Not Following the Pack – “The people
down the hall used to make fun of me for not drinking alcohol.
For awhile it really bothered me and I tried to avoid them,
but lately they’ve been really nice and I even went over and
watched the game at their place last week.”
As your child progresses through his or her education at
California State University, Stanislaus, Housing and Residential
Life will continue to actively engage them intellectually, socially
and emotionally, but we are not alone in this. As a parent you
are a core part of your child’s support network. Students may
not articulate this to you, but your support, understanding, and
guidance is important to them.
Your child’s growing pains have reached a new level.
Be prepared to read between the lines, engage in subtle
interrogation, be a counselor and, above all, be the supportive
parent you have always been.Your child will make mistakes and
this is okay. The mark of whether or not they have learned from
their experiences is if they make the same mistakes again.

sus calificaciones. Algunos de ustedes reciben llamadas o correo
electrónico diario, y otros de ustedes han notado que las llamadas
no son tan frecuentes como antes. Ahora que su hijo e hija se está
desarrollando como un adulto, el o ella probablemente va a explorar
mas y distanciarse de las cosas que siempre ha conocido. Al final, ellos
regresaran mas maduros y esperamos que mas sabios.
El primer paso de la vida universitaria a terminado y nuestros
residentes están descubriendo que sus nuevas libertades vienen
con responsabilidades y consecuencias. Cuando platiquen con ellos
recuerde que ellos están enfrentando muchas experiencias nuevas, y
aun cuando no les comuniquen esto, su comprensión y sus consejos
son muy importantes en ayudarles a encontrar el balance apropiado
para su educación y vida social. Esté enterado en lo que su hijo e hija
puede estar pensando, pero no expresando lo siguiente:
• Mucha diversión es mala, muy mala – “Estoy teniendo
problemas comprometiendome a mis estudios. La tentación de
la televisión, el Internet, los juegos de basquetból, y mis amigos
me causan decir,“Lo haré después.” No tengo buenos grados.”
• Aprendiendo a no esperar hasta el último momento –
“Tengo que entregar mi proyecto mañana y sólo he terminado la
investigación del tema. Necesito concentrarme. No puedo creer
que me esperé hasta el último momento para hacer esto. Necesito
por lo menos una “B” en éste proyecto para pasar la clase.”
• Descubriendo diferencias...Viviendo con otras personas –
“Mi compañero(a) de cuarto y yo somos muy diferentes. Somos
como el día y la noche. Quiero que seamos amigos pero no estoy
seguro como comenzar.”
• Teniendo una experiencia completa en la universidad –
“Yo quiero divertirme en la universidad, pero todo lo que hago
es estudiar, estudiar, estudiar. Viviendo en la universidad no es lo que
habra imaginado. Conocer otros estudiantes es mas difícil de lo que
pensaba. Siento que siempre estoy estudiando y mirando a otra
gente divertirse.”
• Demandando respeto cuando hago mis propias decisiones –
“Los estudiantes que viven cerca de mi me hacían burla porque no
tomaba alcohol con ellos. Antes me molestaba eso y me escondía
de ellos. Ahora, ellos son amables con migo y fui con ellos a ver un
jugo de deporte la semana pasada en su cuarto.”
Mientras que su hijo e hija continué su educación aquí en la universidad

~Fraternities and Sororities~
at California State University, Stanislaus
A
s your son or daughter begins a new and exciting path
down University Lane, he/she will have many extraordinary
opportunities to get involved on campus such as internships,
peer tutoring, event planning, community service and more. As
students embark on their new pathway of success, we encourage
them to get involved on campus so that they may meet their
peers, learn and develop new skills and enjoy their new university
experience here at California State University, Stanislaus. One
such program that offers students a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity
to experience personal growth, meet new people, network with
alumni, and learn from new programs is the fraternity and sorority
experience. Greek Life programs offer students the opportunity
of lifetime membership in fraternity or sorority life. Fraternity
and sorority membership explores five cornerstones of personal
discovery and development: friendship, service, alumni networking,
scholarship and leadership development. Fraternities and
sororities are self-governing student organizations affiliated with
the university and a national or local sponsor.
The Office of Student Leadership and Development is the
primary campus agency that supervises the fraternity and
sorority system. The staff advisor for Greek Affairs facilitates
the interactions between the various agencies and bodies that
have interests in the fraternity and sorority system. The Greek
Advisor advises the governance structures of the system (Greek
Life United Council and the College Panhellenic Council) and the
member chapters that comprise the system. Currently, we six have
fraternity chapters and eight sorority chapters, more commonly
known as organizations. Each chapter and governing council
selects its own officers, who represent the chapter/governing
council to various constituencies. Fraternities and sororities
offer an array of activities for its membership, including leadership
development opportunities, community service programs,
academic support and social opportunities.
I look forward to seeing your son or daughter take part in the
fraternity and/or sorority community. Please feel free to contact

hora que su hijo e hija a decidido
comenzar su camino universitario,
el o ella tendrá la oportunidad de
participar en la comunidad universitaria
en puestos internos, planificación de
eventos, servicios comunitarios, y
mucho más. A cada estudiante que
está buscando éxito, lo motivaremos
a participar en actividades para que
conozcan a sus compañeros, aprendan
nuevas habilidades, y para que disfruten
de su nueva experiencia universitaria.
Hay ciertas organizaciones que han sido
creadas por nuestros estudiantes que les ofrecen a los estudiantes
la oportunidad de sobresalir como persona e ayudan a los
estudiantes a conocer a otros alumnos y a, profesionales que les
brindaran apoyo y comprención academica. Estas organizaciones

Masculinas y Femeninas.” Estas organizaciones también ofrecen
la oportunidad de pertenecer unidos de por vida y explora
cinco áreas de desarrollo y auto descubriemiento que incluyen la
amistad, el servicio comunitario, una red de alumnos graduados,
becas escolares, y el desarrollo en liderazgo. Estas organizaciones
son gobernadas sobre sí mismas por estudiantes en colaboración
con la universidad y una organización nacional o local.

l hablar con otros estudiantes y reflejar en mis
propias experiencias, yo he venido a observar que
después del primer semestre, los estudiantes caen típicamente en tres categorías. Compartiré mis observaciones
no científicas en la esperanza de levantar sus espíritus e
impartiendo las lecciones positivas aprendidas.
The first category might look somewhat like the
following story:

my own experiences, I’ve come to observe that after
the first semester, students typically fall into three categories. I’d like to share my non-scientific observatons in the
hope of lifting your spirits and imparting positive lessons
learned.
Once there was a student admitted to a university, but
lo and behold when he got there he began to see that
is wasn’t as easy as he thought it would be. He struggled
with many obstacles as he took on all his brand new roles.
And now he’s really sad to see that the first semester didn’t end the way
he wanted it to end.
It is clear to see that this first student struggled a lot with his first
semester of college.The first words that I would say to the parents as
well as the students are “Be Encouraged!” There is light at the end of the
tunnel. If your grades didn’t turn out good, “Be Encouraged!” Be sure
to take advantage of the resources available. For example, there is free
tutoring in the Tutoring Center (located in the library). Students can
take also attend a professor’s office hours for one-on-one help, or form
study groups with peers.These are just some of the many options that
this student has. “Be Encouraged” because if you are serious about turning your situation around, you have to succeed.

universidad, pero cuando llegó a la universidad comenzó
a ver que no era tan fácil como él lo había pensado. El

empezó a tener nuevas experiencias y responsabilidades. Y ahora él está
realmente triste de ver que el primer semestre no terminó como lo

Es claro ver que éste primer estudiante luchó mucho con su primer
semestre en la universidad. Lo que me gustaría decirle a éste estudiante
y a sus padres es, “Anímate!” Hay luz a el final del túnel. Si sus grados no
resultaron bueno, “Anímate!” Aprovecha de los recursos disponibles en
esta universidad. Por ejemplo, tenemos asistencia educativa gratuita en
la biblioteca. Los estudiantes pueden hablar con sus profesores durante
sus horas de oficina para recibir ayuda o pueden formar grupos de
estudio con otros estudiantes. Estas son parte de las muchas opciones
que este estudiante tiene. “Anímate!” porque si tu quieres cambiar tu
situación, tienes que triunfar.
The second category that your student may fall into after the first
semester in college may sound like this story:

Once there was a student who found that after time, her university
experience was going just fine.The grades were good and she made new
friends to adore, but the mediocrity of it all caused her to wonder if she
could get more out of her university experience.
To those of you that fall into this category, I say don’t be afraid to
“Spice It Up!” You’re already off to an excellent start. “Spice It Up” by
finding an extracurricular activity to join, or you could even start your
own club.Take advantage of the many possibilities that are offered to
you. But remember, as you “Spice It Up” never lose track of your goal to
graduate.
Una vez había un estudiante que con el tiempo encontró que su
experiencia en la universidad estaba muy bien. Sus grados estaban bien
y tenia muchas amigas, pero se ponía a pensar que quizás podría hacer
mas.
Para ustedes que están en esta categoría les digo, ya que han tenido
un comienzo excelente, no tengan miedo de “Darle fuego!”. “Dale
fuego!” , lo puedes hacer participando en una actividad universitaria o
puedes empezar tu propia organización el la universidad. Aprovecha
de todas las oportunidades que están disponibles. Pero recuerda de
no olvidarte de tu meta de graduarte de la universidad cuando estas
“Dándole fuego!”.
The last category that your student may fall into might be more like this
scenario:
Once there was a student who found that his grades were over the
top and great, and everyone thought that he was absolutely first rate.
The transition from high school to college went fine, and the thought of
more to come caused him to say, “That’s simply divine”
For those of you in this category, I would like to say congratulations
and “Keep It Going!” Many students in this stage learn how to cope
with the many demands of college and thrive. My advice is to lend a
helping hand to your fellow peers whenever you get the opportunity.
This does two things. First, it provides you with more companionship
atop the mountain of success. Second, it reinforces in your mind the
concepts you are learning inside and outside the classroom. So, stay
positive and “Keep It Going!”
My final phrase of advice would be “Work Together!” for it’s in working together that dreams become realities and the you become stronger.
Remember that no matter what stage you are in there is always room
for improvement and for growth. So, I am signing off until next time. We
won’t consider this a farewell, rather a To Be Continued...

es como lo siguiente:
Una vez había un estudiante que encontró que sus grados estaban
sobre la cima y todos pensaban que él era genial. La transición de una
escuela a otra fue fácil y al pensar que habría mas en el futuro le daba
alegría.
Me gustaría felicitar a todos en esta categoría y decirles que sigan
adelante. Muchos estudiantes en esta etapa aprenden a sobrellevar el
estrés de la universidad. Mi consejo para estos estudiantes es “denle la
mano a sus compañeros de clases cuando puedan.” Haciendo esto les
da mas compañía en su montaña de éxito y te ayuda a recordar lo que
has aprendido. Mantente pensando positivamente y sigue adelante.
Mí último consejo es “ Trabajen Juntos!” porque cuando la gente
trabaja juntos los sueños se logran y todos se hacen mas fuertes. Recuerden que en cualquier categoría se puede mejorar y crecer. Los dejo

Students and Graduates Benefit from University’s Career Services

I
t’s happening in the classroom. It’s popping up at student
club programs and in student housing gatherings. It’s called
co-curricular learning, and students are the beneficiaries of this
progressive concept that links academic learning with career
preparation. The idea is that by the time students are ready to
receive their diploma, they are also equipped with the tools they
need to secure professional employment following graduation and
manage their career. The University-designed program, offered
by Career Services, supports student success by providing timely,
informative, career-related presentations in the classroom, through
professionally-guided workshops, and by providing resources in a
fully-functioning, centralized location.
The mission of Career Services is twofold. Professional staff
members serve as a resource to assist students in the process of
identifying, developing, implementing and evaluating career plans in
preparation for employment after graduation. Relationships are
developed with a diverse group of employers and organizations
to obtain occupational information and opportunities for students
that will guide their career development process. Career Services also serves as the primary resource to employers seeking to
recruit well-educated graduates to fill the Central Valley region’s
employment needs.
The message is clear – it is not too early to start career planning, no matter where a student is in their academic progress.
Career Services programs are introduced at registration and
orientation sessions as soon as new students arrive on campus.
Academic advisors include the need for career counseling from
the Career Services Center as part of the step-by-step guidance
for undeclared majors to help them focus on progressing toward
graduation. Faculty members invite professional staff from Career
Services to provide in-class presentations, and club officers and
advisors increasingly include Career Services presentations on the
program for their meetings and events.
At the core of career preparation is the University’s Career
Services Center, located in the Mary Stuart Rogers Educational
Services Building, where many of the services vital to students are
arranged for convenient access. Students can utilize the guidance
of professional staff and take advantage of a myriad of resources to
help them develop a resume, choose a major that is aligned with
their interests and employment aspirations, structure a job search
strategy, or receive coaching in preparation for interviews. And
that’s not all. There’s the Resume Referral Program, where students can choose to have their resume matched with the needs of
recruiting employers. The On-Campus Interview Program brings
employers to campus to conduct interviews for internships and
professional employment, utilizing two private interview rooms in
the Career Center and the convenience of online access so that
students can sign up for interviews around their class schedule.
Other resources include computers with online access for
students to research employers, salary and job links, a resource
library stocked with career-related journals, videos and books, and
employment postings that range from part-time (on-campus and
off-campus jobs for students working their way through college)

to professional-level opportunities (requiring a four-year degree).
Networking events are another resource Career Services makes
available for students and graduates. A variety of activities are held
throughout the academic year to bring employers and students
together, including the spring Career Fair and Accounting Night.
Job shadowing, internships, and community service opportunities
are also available.
The services and programs provided by Career Services are not
just limited to students who have yet to attain a degree. Although
undergraduates have priority, the Career Services Center is also
available at no cost to graduates of the University. These services
are crucial to alumni who may not have been aware that professional assistance was available to them prior to receiving their
degree, or to recent graduates, who may yet need the Center’s
resources to secure professional employment. Both undergraduates and alumni are encouraged to participate in the annual spring
Career Fair scheduled for April 26 and to take advantage of the
online resources offered on the Career Services Center webpage.
The webpage is updated on an ongoing basis as programs are
enhanced and new links are added daily for jobs, internships, and
regional and local career fair events.
The benefits from the University’s Career Services program are
enormous. One important benefit to students is the opportunity
to receive professional assistance to prepare for employment following graduation, including learning how to develop a polished
resume and cover letter, acquiring effective interview skills, absorbing business etiquette, creating a job search strategy, or obtaining
guidance for transitioning from college to the real world of work.
The benefits to graduates include ongoing access to career services resources and links that support their professional employment search, and a continuing connection to the University as they
participate in recruiting, job shadowing, and networking opportunities.
Other campus constituents benefit, as well. The benefits to
faculty are access to professional staff to support their efforts to
incorporate career-related learning into their academic curricula,
optional career presentations in lieu of canceling classes, and timely
email employment messages from the Career Services staff specific
for the students in their academic discipline. The benefits to employers include having a designated host on campus for recruiting
activities and pre-interview information sessions for students, private Career Center interview rooms, a resume matching program,
and candidate interview orientations so that students are better
prepared for the on-campus interview process.
A common thread connects each of these groups to the Career
Services Center at California State University, Stanislaus. It signifies
the vital link between the academic preparation that takes place in
the classroom and career preparation for students. It is a connection for success!

con la preparación para su profesión. La idea es que cuando los estudiantes terminen su educación, tambien tengan los recursos que
ellos necesitan para obtener un empleo cuando se hayan graduado
y puedan empezar sus profesiones. El programa universitario de
Servicios de Profesion (Career Services) ayuda a los estudiantes a
tener éxito. Ellos ofrecen información, hacen
presentaciones en los
salones de clase, tienen
talleres güiados por
profesionales, y tambien
ofrecen recursos en un
lugar conveniente para
los estudiantes.

que aun no han escojido una profesión. Los profesores invitan a
los empleados de la oficina de Servicios de Profesión para hacer
presentaciones en sus clases y las organizaciones estudiantíles y
consejeros hacen lo mismo en sus juntas y eventos.
En el centro de la preparación para una profesión está la oficina
universitaria de los Servicios de Profesión, localizados en el edificio
“Mary Stuart Rogers”, donde muchos de los servicios que los estudiantes necesitan están disponibles. Aquí los estudiantes pueden
utilizar los consejos de personal profesional y pueden aprovechar
los recursos para desarrollar un currículo u historia personal.

nos referimos como “On-Campus Interview Program,” atrae a
empleadores a nuestra universidad para conducir entrevistas para
empleo y desarrollo profesional entre la profesión del

Financial Aid

We have just reached the point in the year where your students are
focusing on a successful start to the Spring semester. However, the
Financial Aid Office would like you to also give some thought to next
Fall.
Students who want or need financial assistance must reapply and
re-establish their eligibilities every year. March 2, 2006 is the CSU
Stanislaus priority deadline for filing the 2006-07 Free Application for
Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), and it is also the deadline to apply for
2006-07 scholarships on campus. Although we continue to accept
FAFSA files after that date, the eligible students who apply by March 2
will stand the best chance of securing funds from some of our more
limited programs, such as the Federal Supplemental Grant or the
Work-Study Program.
Our office strongly encourages all students to file the FAFSA every
year for a couple of reasons: (1) Students find out what assistance is
available to them each year; eligibility can change considerably from
one year to the next, and (2) they will
have an application record in place
in case there are adverse changes in
circumstances later on.Thousands of
families, who do not expect to need
financial aid, experience such changes
as a result of retirement, illness, layoffs,
or even natural disasters such as
hurricanes.
There is now a FAFSA Worksheet
available – electronically at www.fafsa.
ed.gov or in paper form from our
office – that you can use to examine
the questions that must be answered
on the application. After you review
the questions, you can start to gather the records you will need such
as W-2 and 1099 forms from employers, bank statements, annual
reports from untaxed income/benefits, child support payments, etc.
Those of you who have not yet done so can also use this time to
obtain a Personal Identification Number (PIN) which will be used
as your signature when your student files the FAFSA electronically.
Students who did not file a 2005-06 FAFSA for this year should also
obtain a PIN as soon as possible. Electronic filing saves time and allows
you to take advantage of built-in edits that allow applicants to avoid
many common errors.You may apply for your PIN at www.pin.ed.gov.
When you complete the actual FAFSA, be as accurate as you
possibly can. If you have not completed your 2005 tax return by the
March 2 priority deadline, use the best estimates available and meet
the deadline.You will be able to correct the file when your records
are finalized. However, please remember that inaccurate or discrepant
information that remains uncorrected can result in serious delays to
the processing of a student’s award.
We know that the financial aid process can be burdensome, but
the results of that process are helping nearly sixty percent of our
students pursue their educations and their dreams for the future.We
hope that the advice we have provided here is of help to you.The staff
in the Office of Financial Aid and Scholarships is prepared to provide
whatever assistance parents and students need as they negotiate the
process, and we welcome your calls.

entregar solicitudes para becas de la universidad es el 2 de marzo

Life: The Other Classroom
W
hile it may seem unlikely, participating in intramural sports,
student organizations, student programming boards, student
government (senate), internships, study abroad cultural programs and
on-campus living can provide unique opportunities for self discovery
and growth. These moments of personal growth contribute to the
development of life skills and personal goals. As the Student Activities
Coordinator, I work with students on a daily basis and can’t emphasize
campus involvement enough. I encourage students to take advantage
of the learning opportunities, either in an academic setting or in one
of our many diverse student leadership opportunities or multicultural
programs, so that they have the lifetime experiences to discover their
passion, educational and career goals and be exposed to new cultures.
These golden opportunities to interact and get involved on campus and
in our local community will serve to prepare students for graduation and
allow them to share what they have learned with their college peers and
community mentors.
Being involved in the campus community contributes to each
student’s development in a myriad of ways. Some students stay active
and learn lifetime fitness habits through intramural sports and health
workshops. Others practice putting together meeting agendas and
fundraisers, or help with recruitment and event program planning.
Students learn better communications skills through such activities as
interpreting and abiding by policies and regulations, meeting deadlines,
creating mission and vision statements, directing public relations and
cosponsoring events. These activities are not only fun, they are resume
builders as well. When students choose to get involved they are
bettering themselves for their educational development and upcoming
professional careers.
There is a great deal to be gleaned from the college experience by
those who are able to balance academic performance and outside-theclassroom learning experiences.These students will be more prepared

uede parecer improbable que participando en deportes, en
organizaciones estudiantíles, en directivas estudiantíles, en el gobierno
estudiantíl, en los puestos internos ,en estudiar en otro país, o en vivir en
la universidad pueda contribuir con el auto descubrimiento y crecimiento
del estudiante. Estos momentos de crecimiento contribuyen a su
desarrollo como persona y su conocimiento hacia la vida.
Como el Coordinador de Actividades Estudiantíles, yo trabajo con
estudiantes diariamente y creo que la participación en la universidad
es muy importante. Les recomiendo a todos los estudiantes que me
visiten. Pueden participar en una variedad de programas que los ayudarán
a obtener experiencias positivas y descubrirán sus pasiones al igual que
sus metas educativas. Aprovechar las oportunidades universitarias y
formar parte de algún servicio comunitario prepara al estudiante para su
graduación y los ayuda a aplicar lo que han aprendido en la universidad
con sus compañeros y miembros de la comunidad.
Involucararse en la comunidad de la universidad contribuye al
desarrollo del estudiante en varias maneras. Los estudiantes permanecen
activos y saludables (con deportes y con talleres de salúd), obtienen
práctica al organizar agendas de juntas, aprenden a planear eventos, y
ayudan a obtener fondos para esos eventos. Los estudiantes también
aprenden como comunicarse entre si mismos, como interpretar y
obedecer reglas, aprenden a seguir fechas de plazo, relaciones públicas,
y mucho más. Estas actividades aparte de ser divertidas, ayudan a los
estudiantes cuando empiezan a buscar empleo. Cuando nuestros
estudiantes participan en actividades universitarias, están mejorando su
educación y su carrera futura.
Nosotros ánimamos a nuestros estudiantes para que sean participantes
activos en nuestra universidad y en la comunidad local. Haciendo ésto
ellos tendrán muchos recuerdos bonitos de la universidad y los ayudarán
to interface with an ever-growing global community which will ask them
to multi-task, meet deadlines, work late, be creative and work well with
others. What better way for our students to add these skills to their
tool belt then being an involved member of the campus community?

alifornia State University, Stanislaus will offer a premiere summer season of entertainment this year including an outdoor
production of William Shakespeare’s “The Taming of the Shrew,”
directed by California State University, Stanislaus Professor Jere
O’Donnell.
Drew Sutherland, Festival Director and a CSU Stanislaus Drama
Department faculty member, said the July festival will also include
a children’s production of “Pooh Stories”. Sutherland said plans call
for the festival to become an annual event at the University.
“The thing that excites me the most about this is that we get
to offer high quality children’s theatre inside during the heat of the
summer,” said Sutherland, architect of the University’s exciting new
summer program. “Then the evenings can be spent under the stars
watching exceptional theatre. This kind of entertainment will be
great for the whole community.”
At its core, the festival will have a company of 15 students who
will receive full scholarships and be housed at CSU Stanislaus during the eight-week rehearsal and performance period. All proceeds
from the event will go into an account earmarked for the next
summer program’s scholarships.
The Shakespearean event will play Thursday evening through
Sunday evening in the University’s outdoor Amphitheatre the
last three weekends in July (13-16, 20-23, 27-30) for a total of 12
performances. Ticket prices will be $10 general admission, $7 for
college students and CSU Stanislaus staff and $4 for those 16 and
under.
The week after the Shakespeare event opens, the actors will put
on a children’s theatre performance in the University Drama Building Mainstage Theatre. Dates for “The Pooh Stories” production
are July 22, 23, 29 and 30.

ste año La Universidad Estatal de Stanislaus ofrecerá una
temporada de verano llena de entretenimiento que incluirá
una producción al aire libre de William Shakespeare, “The

Coach Hanny Honored

Entrenador Hanny es Reconocido
by the California Golf Writers Association

Jim Hanny who will be honored by the California Golf Writers Association with the organization’s 2005 Golden State Award on February 7. This exclusive honor goes to Coach Hanny for his lifetime
dedication to the game of golf and his success over the years with
the Warrior golf team. Coach Hanny will join the ranks of other
distinguished honorees that include Bing Crosby, Jack Flemming,
Dinah Shore, Jerry Vroom, Sandy Tatum and Jack Kramer.
Coach Hanny will be recognized during the awards dinner at the
Inn at Spanish Bay in Pebble Beach the week of the AT&T Pebble
Beach Pro-Am tournament.
President Shirvani thanked Coach Hanny for his dedication to
the University and for helping to influence the lives and character
development of his players over the years.
