J
ubilee Year of Mercy
June 5, 2016 • 10th Sunday in Ordinary Time
Half the liturgical year 2016 is completed
after six months of extraordinary
celebrations. The Incarnation mystery:
Jesus’ advent, nativity, epiphany. The
Paschal mystery: Jesus’ passion, death,
resurrection, Pentecost’s Holy Spirit.
The solemnities of Holy Trinity and
Jesus’ Body and Blood. Today the
Church resumes Sundays in Ordinary
Time, but with a Gospel of extraordinary
mercy: Jesus raises a dead man to life. Yet
the one who benefits most from his extraordinary mercy
is not the dead son but his widowed mother. With her
husband and only son deceased, this woman’s material
support, in that patriarchal society, had vanished. So had
her emotional support, leaving her helpless, abandoned,
on society’s “peripheries.” One of Pope Francis’ hopes
in calling this Extraordinary Jubilee Year of Mercy is
to transform us into more extraordinary Christians,
by making our caring outreach to just such vulnerable
people, and our practical selfsacrificing love for them,
our ordinary, daily, Christian way of life!.

The Catholic Communication Campaign
The Catholic Communication Campaign is a way that
each of us can follow the call to enter into the world
of new media and digital networks. Pope Francis
emphasized the importance of this endeavor during
his first audience. . . with members of the media on
March 16, 2013, saying: “Be assured that the Church,
for her part, highly esteems your important work.”
The Pope has given us an example of witnessing
through new media, by his tweets and his daily
homilies. . . .
Whether you interact on social media sites throughout
the day or prefer listening to the radio, the Catholic
Communication Campaign (CCC) provides high
quality Catholic content for you. Through Internet,
television, radio, and newspapers, the Catholic
Church uses media to spread the gospel message both
locally and nationally.
Half of all donations collected in our diocese stays in
our diocese to support communications needs.
The Catholic Communication Campaign helps us to
grow in faith, worship, and witness.
HOPE AND LIFE
Today’s readings tell the story of two widows. The
first reading relates the plight of the widow with whom
the prophet Elijah stayed; the Gospel tells
about the widow of Nain. In each story, the
widow’s only son had died. For people
who lived in those cultures, the son
was the only support of a widow, and
the carrying on of the family name by
the son was equal to immortality. A
widow whose only son has died could
lose all hope.
Elijah and Jesus are the restorers of
hope; they bring the sons back to life.
Saint Paul was metaphorically raised from the dead
when he experienced the conversion and call from
God that he describes in today’s
second reading.
What are Christians called to do today?
We may not be able to raise the dead,
but perhaps we can rekindle hope for
a single parent. We may not be able
to convert a persecutor like Paul, but
if we speak the gospel openly and
gently with our lives, we might touch a
life with the Good News.

Cursillo
Attention all Cursillistas and those interested in attending
a Cursillo Weekend Some of you may be asking, “What is a Cursillo?”
Cursillo is a short course in Christianity. It is a wonderful three day
weekend that offers an environment to help you get to know yourself
and your relationship with Christ better. The weekend is based on our
Catholic Faith and throughout the weekend there will be guest speakers
touching on many subjects with the heart of the talks being based on
the topics of Piety, Study and Action. Cursillo has been described as the
best gift you can give yourself. In the beginning it was a gift given by the
Holy Spirit to a layman by the name of Eduardo Bonin back in the early
1940’s and now it is a gift that The Cursillo Movement of the Monterey
Diocese would like to share with you. For more information on Cursillo,
visit the National Cursillo website at https://www.natl-cursillo.org
The dates for the upcoming weekends are: Women’s Cursillo,
Sept. 15-18, 2016, at Camp St. Francis in La Selva Beach near Aptos.
Men’s Cursillo, Sept. 22-25, 2016, at Mission San Antonio near Jolon.
If you are interested in attending a Cursillo or if you have already
made your Cursillo and would like to work the weekend, please
visit our local website at www.montereycursillo.org for contact
information and applications or call Cindy Stefani at (831) 633-5012.

Albert’s Priory in Oakland! Come to beautiful St. Clare’s
Retreat located in the majestic Santa Cruz Mountains for a
silent retreat weekend on either July 15-16-17 Or July 22-2324 as Fr. Serge explores the exciting theme: “The Christian
Toolbox: 5 Essential Virtues For Holiness”. Enjoy this rich
spiritual food for the soul deepening your interior life with
Christ in this Jubilee Year of Mercy and the serene, expansive
grounds nestled in a redwood forest.
To receive an INFORMATION PACKET and REGISTRATION
FORM, please contact Donna Marie Snead at 805. 439.1985.

Care for Creation
Become environmentally responsible (we can
always do a little more).Consider avoiding your use of plastic
(reusable containers instead of baggies for lunch), start a
compost heap, plan your meals so you don’t have too many
leftovers to eat or share with a neighbor, avoid using your
car by walking, carpooling, bicycling, and taking mass transit
(train trips are great fun!)

EFLECTION OF THE WEEK
Listen and remember through Word and Bread
June 5, 2016
10th Sunday in Ordinary Time
When Jesus sees a widow whose
only son has died, he is moved
with compassion for her. As a
widow whose only son has died,
the woman is not only alone, but
also facing disaster. Having lost
her sources of economic support,
she would be among the poorest of
the poor. In this story, the widow
does not speak to Jesus. Seeing
her suffering and being filled with
compassion for her, Jesus speaks
and her son is restored to life. The
crowd who witness this exclaim,
“God has visited his people.”
Reflection question:
Adult: What might a greater sense
of compassion allow you to do for
someone this week?
Child: When do you try to
understand what another person
was feeling?

Forming Consciences for Faithful Citizenship
(http://www.usccb.org/issues-and-action/
faithful-citizenship) is the seminal resource
for U.S. Catholics in preparing themselves to
vote and otherwise participate in the political
process in this country. Catholic voters should
use Catholic teaching to examine candidates’
positions on issues and should consider
candidates’ integrity, philosophy, and
performance. It is important for all citizens “to
see beyond party politics, to analyze campaign
rhetoric critically, and to choose their political
leaders according to principle, not party
affiliation or mere self-interest” . . .
For special consideration: human rights
and responsibilities, respect for work and the
rights of workers, care for God’s creation, and
the preferential option for the poor
and vulnerable.

LA VOZ LATINA
Décimo Domingo del Tiempo Ordinario
E
speranza y Vida
inmortalidad. La viuda cuyo único hijo hubiera muerto
perdía toda esperanza.
Elías y Jesús son los restauradores de esperanza;
ellos devuelven la vida a sus hijos. San Pablo,
madre soltera. Quizá no
podemos convertir a un
perseguidor como Pablo,
pero si abiertamente
hacemos vida el Evangelio
en nuestras vidas,
podríamos tocar una vida
con la Buena Nueva.
A
vida cristiana ordinaria, diaria!o.

catolicismo y también para aquellos católicos que
no han completado sus sacramentos (confirmación
o primera comunión). Tal vez conozcamos a
