Nuestras sociedades están experimentando, como nunca antes había sucedido en la historia, procesos de mutua interdependencia e
interacción a nivel global, que, si bien es verdad que comportan elementos problemáticos o negativos, tienen el objetivo de mejorar las
condiciones de vida de la familia humana, no sólo en el aspecto económico, sino también en el político y cultural. Toda persona pertenece a
la humanidad y comparte con la entera familia de los pueblos la esperanza de un futuro mejor. De esta constatación nace el tema que he
elegido para la Jornada Mundial del Emigrante y del Refugiado de este año: Emigrantes y refugiados: hacia un mundo mejor.
¿Qué supone la creación de un “mundo mejor”? Esta expresión no alude ingenuamente a concepciones abstractas o a realidades
inalcanzables, sino que orienta más bien a buscar un desarrollo auténtico e integral, a trabajar para que haya condiciones de vida dignas para
todos, para que sea respetada, custodiada y cultivada la creación que Dios nos ha entregado. El venerable Pablo VI describía con estas
palabras las aspiraciones de los hombres de hoy: «Verse libres de la miseria, hallar con más seguridad la propia subsistencia, la salud, una
ocupación estable; participar todavía más en las responsabilidades, fuera de toda opresión y al abrigo de situaciones que ofenden su dignidad
de hombres; ser más instruidos; en una palabra, hacer, conocer y tener más para ser más»
Le nostre società stanno sperimentando, come mai è avvenuto prima nella storia, processi di mutua interdipendenza e interazione a livello
globale, che, se comprendono anche elementi problematici o negativi, hanno l’obiettivo di migliorare le condizioni di vita della famiglia
umana, non solo negli aspetti economici, ma anche in quelli politici e culturali. Ogni persona, del resto, appartiene all’umanità e condivide la
speranza di un futuro migliore con l’intera famiglia dei popoli. Da questa constatazione nasce il tema che ho scelto per la Giornata Mondiale
del Migrante e del Rifugiato di quest’anno: “Migranti e rifugiati: verso un mondo migliore”.
Che cosa comporta la creazione di un “mondo migliore”? Questa espressione non allude ingenuamente a concezioni astratte o a realtà
irraggiungibili, ma orienta piuttosto alla ricerca di uno sviluppo autentico e integrale, a operare perché vi siano condizioni di vita dignitose
per tutti, perché trovino giuste risposte le esigenze delle persone e delle famiglie, perché sia rispettata, custodita e coltivata la creazione che
Dio ci ha donato. Il Venerabile Paolo VI descriveva con queste parole le aspirazioni degli uomini di oggi: «essere affrancati dalla miseria,
garantire in maniera più sicura la propria sussistenza, la salute, un’occupazione stabile; una partecipazione più piena alle responsabilità, al di
fuori da ogni oppressione, al riparo da situazioni che offendono la dignità umana; godere di una maggiore istruzione; in una parola, fare
conoscere e avere di più, per essere di più» (Lett. enc. Populorum progressio, 26 marzo 1967, 6).

MESSAGE OF HIS HOLINESS POPE FRANCIS FOR THE WORLD DAY OF MIGRANTS AND REFUGEES (2014)
Migrants and Refugees: Towards a Better World
Dear Brothers and Sisters,
Our societies are experiencing, in an unprecedented way, processes of mutual interdependence and interaction on the global level. While
not lacking problematic or negative elements, these processes are aimed at improving the living conditions of the human family, not only
economically, but politically and culturally as well. Each individual is a part of humanity and, with the entire family of peoples, shares the
hope of a better future. This consideration inspired the theme I have chosen for the World Day of Migrants and Refugees this year: Migrants
and Refugees: Towards a Better World.
What is involved in the creation of “a better world”? The expression does not allude naively to abstract notions or unattainable ideals;
rather, it aims at an authentic and integral development, at efforts to provide dignified living conditions for everyone, at finding just
responses to the needs of individuals and families, and at ensuring that God’s gift of creation is respected, safeguarded and cultivated. The
Venerable Paul VI described the aspirations of people today in this way: “to secure a sure food supply, cures for diseases and steady
employment… to exercise greater personal responsibility; to do more, to learn more, and have more, in order to be more”.
