SAI N T M A RGA R E T M A RY A L AC O Q U E 2 A MESSAGE FROM MSGR. MARC I n the story of the creation of human kind in Genesis, God is described as fashioning us from the earth. But it is the breath of God that animates, gives life to what had been just a lump of clay. In Hebrew, the word for breath, ruah, also means “spirit” and so it can be said that the Spirit of God, that same Spirit that was present at the very beginning of creation “hovering over the waters”, the same Spirit that saw the creation of light and the earth and all that lives, continues to give life to each human being. In a sense, every breath we take is God exhaling his gift of life into us, animating us and making us responsive to him and to those around us. I n the story of Pentecost, Jesus breathes on the disciples, recalling that original action of God. Jesus breathes new life into the disciples and, through them, into the whole Church. It is that breath, that spirit that continues to enliven the Church in its mission to preach redemption and forgiveness of sins through Jesus Christ. Jesus’ salutation, “Peace be with you,” bears fruit when we realize how reliant we are on God’s breath and how that creative spirit urges us to participate in the work of creation so that all things will reflect the peace and love of God. T his week we celebrated the Confirmation of over a hundred fifty of our youth and young adults. In this Sacrament, we pray that the Breath of God animate our young people with the gifts of wisdom, knowledge, understanding, counsel, courage, piety and awe and may those same gifts enliven all of us in our journey of faith. It’s a deliberate play on words. It refers to spiritual busyness where we are running around spending our time and energy on many good things, but leaving out the best…our time with Jesus. The Chinese word for busy is made of two characters: “heart” and “killing.” When we rush around trying to get stuff done we kill something vital in ourselves and smother the quiet wisdom of our hearts. The actual quote, attributed to Voltaire, is “the best is the enemy of the good”. This means that we can get so bogged down trying to do something “perfectly” that we don’t do anything! The Pareto principal explains it numerically. It takes 20% of full time to complete 80% of a task, but the last 20% takes 80% of the effort. I am always happy when I do a project and discover what’s missing, forgotten or not possible. Then I think to myself, okay, there’s that imperfection, now the rest can be “good”. Jesus promises if we let go of trying to run things, he will bring us rapidly to that perfection in God … where the opposite is true - the good things around us are the enemy of the best. What is the best? Jesus says “I am the best.” For your Journal-keeping ♥ What surprised you this week? Was it a perfect moment of grace or timing? ♥ Ask Jesus what is “the best” and listen for his response. Read John 14:6. Write it in your journal. O U R F A I T H ST. R I S H I N A C T I O N 11 HELP FR. RODGERS & THE CHILDREN OF ZAMBIA We all remember Father Rodgers and his loving service here at St. Margaret Mary. Since he returned to Zambia he has been in charge of all the Catholic Schools in the country. He is supervising a Catholic school system with many needs. For the past five years St. Margaret Mary’s parishioners have raised between $2000 and $8000 annually to assist Fr. Rodgers. The money has been spent for support of Chilubi, a rural elementary and high school in Zambia. The monies have provided: eye glasses, school desks (where students were sitting on the floor) and solar panels providing electricity for the first time in the history of the school. We have provided tuition support for a group of 35 students. . Fr. Rodger says that these contributions have brought hope to the children of Chulibi Basic School. In five years none of the students in our group have left school - a major improvement, especially for female students. If you would like to be a part of helping Fr. Rodgers and our brothers and sisters in Zambia, you can donate to the annual collection this year. Place your donation in an envelope and write Zambia on the outside. Checks should be made out to St. Margaret Mary with Zambia noted at the bottom of the check. Place your donation in the collection by June 24 or bring the money to the church office. Questions? Bullying Is a Form of Abuse [email protected] Did you know that bullying is a form of abuse, and therefore is forbidden in our Catholic schools? Bullying typically consists of direct behaviors, such as teasing, taunting, threatening, hitting, shoving and stealing. But it might also be indirect, such as spreading rumors that cause victims to be socially isolated through intentional exclusion. Cyberbullying, which involves the use of the Internet or mobile phones to send inappropriate messages and images to or about others, is also behavior that is not tolerated in our Catholic schools. If you suspect bullying of a child at school, please contact the school principal with your concerns.
