Reflections on big C Culture (literature, art, history, music, etc.)
Although I left my home country, Peru, at the age of 19, I realize that I
did not absorb much of its Culture, or the Latin Culture, until I reached a
more mature age while living in the United States.
During my primary and secondary school days, although I believe I
absorbed Culture at a very basic level, I could have assimilated more if I
had a higher level of readiness and wisdom and instead had taken for
granted the value and meaning of what I was studying. I focused most of
my young and young-adult days trying to learn more about the American
Culture because at the time, it seemed more fascinating, and in part
because of my fear of not fitting in once I came to the United States to
attend college.
During my days as an International Relations student at FIU is that I
read about history of many countries in Latin America as an attempt to
understand their current socio-political situations and issues. As a VCU
Spanish student, I had the opportunity to read poetry, novels, and
history books in Spanish, finally capture the message, the essence, and I
am able to analyze and think about the Latin Culture, its importance and
its effects on me, on people and Cultures around the world.
Aunque salí de mi país natal, Perú, a la edad de 19 años, me doy cuenta que no
absorbí gran parte de mi cultura, o de la cultura latina, hasta llegar a una edad
más madura, mientras que vivía en los Estados Unidos.

Durante mis días de escuela primaria y secundaria, aunque creo que asimilé la
cultura a un nivel muy básico, podría haber asimilado más si hubiera tenido un
mayor nivel de preparación y conocimientos, en vez de haber pasado por alto el
valor y el significado de lo que yo estaba estudiando. Durante la mayoría de mis
años de adolescencia y juventud traté de aprender más sobre la cultura
estadounidense, porque en ese momento me parecía más fascinante, y en parte
debido a mi temor de no encajar una vez que llegase a Estados Unidos para
asistir a la universidad.
Durante mis días como estudiante la Relaciones Internacionales de la FIU es
que leí sobre la historia de muchos países de América Latina en un intento de
comprender temas de su situación socio-política. Como estudiante de español
en VCU, tuve la oportunidad de leer poesía, novelas y libros de historia en
español, finalmente captar su mensaje, su esencia, y me siento capaz de
analizar y reflexionar sobre la cultura latina, su importancia y sus efectos sobre
mí, en las personas y las culturas de todo el mundo.

(based on personal interactions, films and television, art and
architecture, newspapers and internet sites, fashion and customs, music
and foods, beliefs, religious practices and gender roles, etc.).
Culture (c culture) is the part of me that dominates the way I act,
think, speak, interact, learn, and pretty much function. I never thought of it
this way until now.
One of the possible reasons for my “culture” is that I lived in a country
governed by a military junta, which taught my family and me to be
resourceful, flexible and save in many aspects of our lives. I find many
individuals of similar Hispanic backgrounds also behaving in similar ways
because of the common political unrest of many Central and South American
countries. I like to think ahead, plan for the future, look outside of the box.
I find that individuals with similar cultures share a different attitude
towards life’s challenges.
One of my hobbies is cooking. As the daughter of a great cook, I followed
my mother’s steps. Peruvian food is one of the best in South America, if not

in the world. Spices and mixture of exotic ingredients dominate the dishes.
The geographical diversity gave my country the possibility to grow an
amazing array of grains, vegetables, animals, spices, etc. In Peru, guinea pig
is a delicacy. “Cuy” is eaten deep-fried or stewed, depending on the region
you are visiting. My favorite is deep-fried with a chili-peanut sauce the way
my great grandmother Felipa used to make it. In the United States, cuy is a
pet. I am not sure who determines what a pet is or what is an edible rodent
so the people of PETA do not come after you! I tried to make cuy once while
I lived in Brooklyn, NY. I found an Ecuadorian restaurant that sold them
deep-fried for top dollars. I made the sauce and invited some intrigued
friends for dinner. They all thought it was interesting but too small to feast
on it.
La cultura (la cultura c) es la parte de mí que domina la forma en que actúo,
pienso, hablo, interactúo, aprendo, y me comporto día a día. Nunca pensé de
esta manera hasta hoy.
Una de las razones de mi “cultura” es que yo viví en un país gobernado por una
junta militar, que enseñó a mi familia y a mí a ser ingeniosos, flexibles y a
ahorrar en muchos aspectos de nuestras vidas. Me parece que muchos
hispanos con similares antecedentes también se comportan de manera similar
debido a la inestabilidad política común de muchos países de Centro y
Sudamérica. Me gusta proyectarme hacia futuro, planear para el futuro, ser
menos convencional. Pienso que individuos con culturas similares comparten
una actitud diferente con respecto a los retos de la vida.
Uno de mis pasatiempos es cocinar. Como hija de una gran cocinera, he seguido
los pasos de mi madre. La comida peruana no solo es una de las mejores en
América del Sur, sino en el mundo. Especias y mezclas de ingredientes exóticos
dominan los platillos. La diversidad geográfica le dio a mi país la posibilidad de
crecer una increíble variedad de granos, vegetales, animales, especias, etc. En
el Perú, el cuy es una finura. "Cuy" se come frito o guisado, dependiendo de la
región que está visitando. Mi favorito es frito con salsa de maní picante-de la
forma en que mi bisabuela Felipa lo preparaba. En los Estados Unidos, el cuy es
una mascota. No estoy segura de quién determina qué es una mascota o qué es
un roedor comestible para que la gente de PETA no venga por ti. Traté de hacer
cuy una vez mientras yo vivía en Brooklyn, NY. Yo encontré un restaurante
ecuatoriano que lo vendía frito por mucho dinero. Hice la salsa e invité a cenar a

unos amigos muy intrigados. Todos pensaron que fue un platillo interesante
pero demasiado pequeño para una comilona.
