From the Pastor’s Desk…
The main challenge with the Pharisees with this
Sunday’s Gospel was their intention. They did not
have the most upright intention. They were not
interested in following protocol at a banquet were
everybody is supposed to know theirs and each
other’s place, guarantee the order of the event. They
were not interested in supporting the host of the
dinner by being close to him in the event that
something was needed. They were full of morbid
curiosity. They wanted to know things that later they could use
against other people. They wanted to be seen. Theirs was a
shameful display of protagonism. It was not the “look at me at
your service” but “just look at me”. They wanted to be the
“first”. The firsts ones on calling the attention of the other
guests and host, the first ones gathering the right amount of
gossip, the first ones being served as they were close to the
head of the table. They were there for the wrong reasons.
My grandmother in a colloquial sort of way used to say “the
devil seats on the first pew”. By this she meant that the devil
and its ill intentions never rest. He is always ready and first in
line to cause confusion, hurt and disorder. At the root of all his
manipulations we find pride. Not the healthy kind of pride that
allows you to evaluate your talents and the fruit of your labor as
you may consider them as gifts of God and as instruments for
service to others. The devil only wants to serve himself. He
wants to be exalted for the wrong reasons. He wants to be
exalted without being humble.
In a reversal of scales Jesus changes the ordinary signs for
success of our society, “My kingdom is not of this world”, and
calls us to be simple, to be for others, and to be humble. What
the world might find humiliating, like to give your time to
others, to remain quiet in dignifying silence, to put your
resources for the assistance of your neighbor, is considered the
Christian duty for Jesus. To humble yourself is to be exalted.
You’re exalted when you become a humble in service. You’re
exalted and regarded as a precious possession in the eyes of
your Lord when you walk in the footsteps of Christ. You’re
exalted when you see Christ in your brother and sister.
Mother Theresa of Calcutta saw a Christ in every homeless
abandoned in the streets of Calcutta. She took them under her
wing, cleaned and tended to them so that many may have a
decent death. Cardinal Bernardin never counterattacked his
accusers who presented false testimonies against his moral
character. On the contrary, he visited him at his death bed to
bring him consolation, support and the Eucharist. He saw Jesus
in him. Jesus Christ from the cross gave the best example of
being of service to humanity. His sacrifice opened the doors of
heaven for our redemption and those who believe in him.
How do you humble yourself in a healthy way? By being good
to all particularly to those who cannot repay you. By becoming
like little children: transparent, with a sense of wonder and
dependent on love. Again to humble yourself means to be the
last one, to serve others. Let us be children. Let us be humble.
Let us be Christ for others.

Del Escritorio del Párroco…
El problema fundamental con los fariseos del
evangelio de este domingo fue su intención. No tenían
recta intención. No estaban interesados en seguir el
protocolo de un banquete cuando todos debían saber
su lugar y el lugar de los demás, garantizando el orden
del evento. Ellos no estaban interesados en apoyar el
anfitrión de la cena al sentársele cerca en caso de que
necesitase ayuda. Simplemente estaban llenos de
curiosidad morbosa. Querían saber cosas para después
hablar de los demás. Querían ser vistos en un despliegue
vergonzoso de protagonismo. Era como decir “Estoy aquí a su
servicio” sino “estoy aquí, mírenme”. Querían ser los primeros.
Los primeros en llamar la atención del anfitrión y de los demás,
los primeros en tener los detalles del chisme, los primeros en
ser servidos estando tan cerca de la mesa principal. Ellos
estaban allí por las razones equivocadas.
Mi abuelita decía en forma coloquial “el diablo se sienta en la
primera banca”. Por esto ella se refería que el demonio siempre
estaba a la espera en primera fila para atacar causando
confusión, lastimar y causar división. A la raíz de toda su
manipulación encontramos el orgullo. No en tipo saludable del
orgullo que es la sensación de satisfacción por los talentos que
uno tenga y por lo que pueda hacer por su prójimo. El demonio
solo quiere servirse así mismo. Quiere ser exaltado por las
razones equivocadas. Quiere ser exaltado sin ser humillado.
En un cambio de las escales Jesús cambia los símbolos
representativos de éxito de nuestra sociedad, “Mi reino no es de
este mundo”, y nos llama a ser sencillos, servir a otros y ser
humilde. Lo que el mundo pueda parecerle como humillante,
como por ejemplo dar de tu tiempo a otros, el mantenerte
callado en un silencio digno, el colocar tus recursos al servicio
de tu prójimo, es considerado como el llamado del cristiano por
Jesús. El humillarse constituye el exaltarse ante Dios. Eres
exaltado cuando se conviertes en uno de los más pequeños al
servir a otros. Eres exaltado y considerado propiedad preciada
ante los ojos de Dios cuando caminas por los pasos de Jesús.
Eres exaltado cuando ves a Cristo en tu hermana y hermano.
La Madre Teresa de Calcuta vio a un Cristo en los indigentes
abandonados en las calles de Calcuta. Ella los tomo bajo su ala,
los limpio y atendió para darles a muchos una muerte digna. El
Cardenal Bernardin nunca ataco a sus acusadores quienes a
través de falsos testimonios atacaron su fibra moral. Por
contrario, visito a su acusador principal en su cama de muerte
llevándole consuelo, apoyo y la Eucaristía. El vio a Jesús en su
acusador. Jesucristo desde la cruz dio el mejor ejemplo de
servicio a la humanidad. Su sacrifico abrió las puertas de los
cielos para nuestra redención y la de los que creen en él.
¿Cómo nos humillamos de manera correcta? Siendo bueno
para con todos particularmente para con aquellos que no te
pueden pagar. Convirtiéndonos
en pequeños niños:
transparentes, con un sentido de descubriendo espiritual y
dependientes el amor. Nuevamente el humillarte significa ser el
último, en servicio a los demás. Seamos niños. Seamos
humildes. Seamos Cristo los unos con los otros.

The Lord’s Peace be with You!
¡La Paz del Señor esté con ustedes!
In this Sunday’s Gospel from the fourteenth chapter
of Luke, Jesus addresses two alternatives we often
face in life, that of seeking to elevate ourselves
above others versus that of recognizing and
conforming to our true nature. We do well when we
acknowledge just how dependent we are on God for
everything in our lives. To grow in this
understanding we need to be poor in spirit. Our
awareness of our lowliness serves to exalt God, who
is over and above all things. This act of humility in
turn better allows us to open ourselves to receive “…
the joy of the poor, to whom the Kingdom already
belongs.” (CCC par 2546) In the eyes of God no one
person is less important than another. As Matthew
Kelly says “God has no favorites and it isn’t a matter
of freak luck”. It is very important that as followers
of Christ we honor God by following the example of
Christ, who this Sunday reminds us “everyone who
exalts himself will be humbled, but the one who
humbles himself will be exalted”.
En el Evangelio de este Domingo del capítulo
catorce de Lucas, Jesús nos señala dos alternativas
con la cual frecuentemente nos encontramos en la
vida, la de querer elevarnos sobre los demás, versus
la de reconocer y conformarnos a nuestra verdadera
naturaleza. Hacemos bien cuando reconocemos que
tanto dependemos de Dios para todo en nuestra vida.
Para lograr progreso en esto debemos ser pobre de
espíritu. El aceptar nuestra pequeñez a la vez sirve
en exaltar a Dios, quien está sobre todo y por encima
de todo. Nuestra humildad nos permite además estar
mejor dispuestos a recibir “…la alegría de los
pobres, a quienes ya les pertenece el Reino.” (CCC
par 2546) Toda persona es importante en los ojos de
Dios. Como dice Matthew Kelly “Con Dios no
existen favoritos y no es cuestión de suerte”. Como
seguidores de Cristo es muy importante que a su
ejemplo honremos a Dios, y que recordemos “todo
aquel que se exalta será humillado, pero aquel que se
humilla será exaltado”.

Right of Christian Initiation for Adults
RCIA is designed for those who are
considering joining the Catholic Church
through celebrating the sacraments of
initiation (Baptism, Confirmation and
Eucharist) at the Easter Vigil. The process
welcomes adults who have never been
baptized or have been baptized in another
Christian tradition, and those who have
been baptized in the Roman Catholic
Church and need to receive one of the sacraments of
initiation. RCIA classes begin Tuesday, October 25 at 7
p.m. in room 101 of the Monsignor Thiele Center. Visit

Father Manuel Enrique Sanchez a
member of the Claretian Missionary
Fathers of Central America will be
speaking at all of the Masses on
Saturday and Sunday, September 3
and 4. He will be speaking on behalf
of Padre Javier Hernandez telling us
about Padre’s mission among our
Maya brothers and sisters in
Guatemala. Father Javier has been
working in Guatemala for more than
20 years. His parish extends over an area of more than
Two Thousand Five Hundred (2,500) square miles, which
includes more than 85 Mayan villages and a population of
approximately 35,000 persons.

In addition to the sacramental ministry, the Claretian
Fathers of Central America are dedicated to the education
of the Maya children in this extremely poor section of
Guatemala who would otherwise not be able to attend
school.
