FW may 2010 7 Fingerprint On Demand Note Leads To Bank Robbery Arrest A fingerprint on a demand note led to the Tuesday arrest of a man in Ohio suspected of robbing a Novato bank in 2007, police said today. The man who robbed the Wells Fargo bank inside the Safeway at 900 Diablo Ave. on Oct. 25, 2007, left behind the demand note and some clothing, Sgt. Keith Heiden said. Last month, Marin County sheriff ’s Sgt. Sandra Scott analyzed a fingerprint recovered from the demand note and matched it to Thomas John Clagett, a former Marin County resident living in Warren, Ohio, Heiden said. Novato police detective Kory Jones obtained a $250,000 warrant for Clagett’s arrest and arranged for the FBI to arrest him, Heiden said. Clagett was taken into custody Tuesday and he will be transported to Marin County next week, Heiden said. Clagett is currently being held in the Trumbull County jail in Warren, Ohio, Heiden said. The blaze, which injured six people, was reported shortly before 4 p.m. at a single-story home on Brownstone Court and declared under control at about 4:40 p.m. Fire Capt. Robert Culbertson said two disabled people were inside the house with a caretaker when the blaze broke out. The caretaker managed to get outside the front door of the home with the other two occupants. However, the house was engulfed in flames and the three were still threatened by the fire, Culbertson said. At that point, two neighbors and a third person who happened to be passing through the neighborhood, worked to rescue the home’s occupants, Culbertson said. “They all put themselves in harm’s way to help people they didn’t necessarily know,’’ the fire captain said. Culbertson said the home’s three occupants as well as the three people who helped them suffered smoke inhalation, heat exposure and potentially burns. Fire officials had initially reported the six victims were all adult family members. Culbertson said the home sustained significant damage in the fire and all contents appeared to have been destroyed. “It was almost fully involved when our fire crews got here,’’ Culbertson said. FW may 2010 9 Fugitive Watch®News Parenting Advice from Kung-Fu Panda Parenting Advice from Kung-fu Panda by Steve & Patt Saso Did you ever see the movie Kung-fu Panda? Recently, Patt and I rented it. Yes, we know it is a child’s movie, but there are some profound parenting lessons that can be mined from this movie. It is an animated feature about a simple Panda. His father wants him to take over the family business, but his interests are in other areas. Against all odds, Panda becomes a kung-fu hero. But before he became a hero he had to face and overcome many obstacles-- his own internal doubts and fears and the external pressure from others. How does this relate to parenting teenagers? In life, our kids have to find their own way by following their passions. Like the father in the movie, many parents have an agenda and it may not be in harmony with their teen’s desires. This creates tension and hurt. For example, Mary wants her son to go to college. Her son wants to join the military. Mary lost her brother in the Vietnam War and still feels grief over his loss. As a mother, her worst fear is losing her son. Mary and her son can’t even talk civilly about the topic. Mary gets easily upset. But the truth is Mary is going to have to let go and accept that her son needs to make his own life choices. Parenting Lessons: Letting Go and Staying in the Now Letting go isn’t always so easy, especially if our fear is being triggered by past experiences. Mary is working hard to stay in the present moment, rather than being hijacked by her emotions. She is learning that instead of being reactive to what her son says and does, she can pay attention to what is really driving her fears, so that she can respond with care and compassion. How does she do this? By staying in the now. The Pause That Reflects With mindful awareness Mary recognizes when these emotions come up and then she takes a breather, a timeout of sorts, by pausing and reflecting. She reminds herself that these are her negative emotions and takes full responsibility for her behavior. Then she asks herself: How might I look at this situation differently? How might I see the situation so that my negative emotions do not sweep me away and I can listen without being reactive? Answering these questions help her stay present to what her son is saying instead of reacting to him. The Gift of Presence This brings us to the second parenting lesson in Kung-fu Panda: staying present. At one point in the movie the sage, Old Turtle, says: “You are too concerned with what was and what will be. There is a saying, ‘Yesterday is history and tomorrow is a mystery. But today is a gift. That is why they call it the present.’ ” Mary values the gift of staying in the now and the positive influence it is having in relationship with her son. When our teen displays undesirable behavior – he or she does poorly in school, gets caught drinking at a school dance, spends too much time on the computer, gets involved with a boyfriend or girlfriend we don’t like--when our teen displays these and other behaviors we have a hard time with, we may leave the now and take up residence in the future. We may think: “My teen is going to be a loser, a drug-addict, a school drop-out. My teen will never get a job; he will live on skid row and have a terrible life. I am such a bad parent.” There is an antidote to this type of negative thinking. Bring yourself into the present moment with mindfulness. Mindfulness is the awareness that comes by paying attention on purpose, in this moment, non-judgmentally to things as they are, rather than as we want them to be. So the key points we hope you walk away with are: let go of your agenda for your teen, accept the fact that they need to make their own decisions, be aware when you are being triggered by something in your past, work toward a loving and trusting relationship with your child. You can do this by practicing mindful awareness, by living in the present moment, accepting what is, and responding with care and compassion. As the sage Turtle says, “Today is a gift. That is why they call it the present.” Patt Saso assists people back into harmony in their relationships. She is a Parenting Coach and Marriage & Family therapist in Milpitas, CA. FUGITIVE WATCH...1-800-9CAUGHT Appeals Court Rejects Lawsuit Challenging Prison Wages Famed San Francisco civil rights and defense attorney Tony Serra lost a bid to a federal appeals court today to have low wages for prisoners declared the equivalent of slave labor. The 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in San Francisco dismissed a lawsuit in which Serra and two other former prison inmates challenged prison wages as low as 19 cents per hour. Judge Richard Clifton wrote, “The Constitution does not provide prisoners any substantive entitlement to compensation for their labor.” The civil rights lawsuit filed by Serra, 74, grew out of his experience in serving a 10-month prison term in 2006 and 2007 for failing to pay $44,000 in income taxes in the late 1990s. Serra served nine months of his sentence at a federal prison camp in Lompoc and the final month in a halfway house. He said he was paid 19 cents per hour for watering prison lawns and gardens at Lompoc. Serra said this morning, “I’m grievously disappointed. Prisoners are economic captives and get paid peanuts.” Serra said, “This ruling fortifies the views of those who say we are approaching the totalitarian type of states that have exploited prisoners economically.” Serra filed the lawsuit with the aid of volunteer lawyers. He said the case may be at an end because unless he can find more volunteer help, “I don’t think I have the financial wherewithal to petition the Supreme Court.” The lawsuit claimed the low prison wages violated the constitutional right to due process as well as several international laws. But a three-judge panel of the appeals courts said that none of those doctrines applied to the prisoners’ case. Clifton wrote, “A prisoner has no basis for asserting a violation of due process simply because he is made or allowed to work for low pay as punishment for a crime of which he was lawfully convicted.” Serra, who was the model for the defense lawyer in the 1989 movie “True Believer,” was convicted of failing to pay taxes after he filed tax returns for 1998 and 1999 but didn’t pay the $44,000 due. He said at the time that he didn’t have the money to pay the taxes because he handles many cases for free and doesn’t believe in saving money. Serra said when he filed the lawsuit in 2007 that being in prison gave him good ideas about civil rights issues to sue about and was like being “a doctor locked in a hospital.” Copyright © 2010 by Bay City News, Inc. -- Republication, Rebroadcast or any other Reuse without the express written consent of Bay City News, Inc. is prohibited. Both rangers had been assigned to a security detail at the headquarters. As they confronted the trespassers, the men opened fire on the rangers, who were able to return fire. Ranger Betancourt and Ranger Rodríguez both suffered fatal wounds during the shootout. One of the suspects was also wounded. The suspects then stole the patrol car and gun from one of the fallen rangers and then fled. All three were arrested a short time later after police received a telephone tip from a witness. Ranger Félix Rodríguez Cuerpo De Vigilantes De Puerto Rico The 5th of May is not Mexican Independence Day, but it should be! And Cinco de Mayo is not an American holiday, but it should be. Mexico declared its independence from mother Spain on midnight, the 15th of September, 1810. And it took 11 years before the first Spanish soldiers were told and forced to leave Mexico. So, why Cinco de Mayo? And why should Americans savor this day as well? Because 4,000 Mexican soldiers smashed the French and traitor Mexican army of 8,000 at Puebla, Mexico, 100 miles east of Mexico City on the morning of May 5, 1862. The French had landed in Mexico (along with Spanish and English troops) five months earlier on the pretext of collecting Mexican debts from the newly elected government of democratic President (and Indian) Benito Juarez. The English and Spanish quickly made deals and left. The French, however, had different ideas. Under Emperor Napoleon III, who detested the United States, the French came to stay. They brought a Hapsburg prince with them to rule the new Mexican empire. His name was Maximilian; his wife, Carolota. Napoleon’s French Army had not been defeated in 50 years, and it Cinco de Mayo invaded Mexico with the finest modern equipment and with a newly reconstituted Foreign Legion. The French were not afraid of anyone, especially since the United States was embroiled in its own Civil War. When President Lincoln was asked if he was going to enforce the “Monroe Doctrine” which said that further efforts by European governments to colonize land or interfere with states in the Americas would be viewed by the United States of America as acts of aggression requiring US intervention, President Lincoln replied, “Only one war at a time”. The French Army left the port of Vera Cruz to attack Mexico City to the west, as the French assumed that the Mexicans would give up should their capital fall to the enemy -- as European countries traditionally did. Under the command of Texas-born General Zaragosa, (and the cavalry under the command of Colonel Porfirio Diaz, later to be Mexico’s president and dictator), the Mexicans awaited. Brightly dressed French Dragoons led the enemy columns. The Mexican Army was less stylish. General Zaragosa ordered Colonel Diaz to take his cavalry, the best in the world, out to the French flanks. In response, the French did a most stupid thing; they sent their cavalry off to chase Diaz and his men, who proceeded to butcher them. The remaining French infantrymen charged the Mexican defenders through sloppy mud from a thunderstorm and through hundreds of head of stampeding cattle stirred up by Indians armed only with machetes. When the battle was over, many French were killed or wounded and their cavalry was being chased by Diaz’ superb horsemen miles away. The Mexicans had won a great victory that kept Napoleon III from supplying the confederate rebels for another year, allowing the United States to build the greatest army the world had ever seen. This grand army smashed the Confederates at Gettysburg just 14 months after the battle of Puebla, essentially ending the Civil War. Union forces were then rushed to the Texas/Mexican border under General Phil Sheridan, who made sure that the Mexicans got all the weapons and ammunition they needed to expel the French. American soldiers were discharged with their uniforms and rifles if they promised to join the Mexican Army to fight the French. The American Legion of Honor marched in the Victory Parade in Mexico, City. Ranger Kenneth Betancourt Cuerpo De Vigilantes De Puerto Rico It might be a historical stretch to credit the survival of the United States to those brave 4,000 Mexicans who faced an army twice as large in 1862. But who knows? In gratitude, thousands of Mexicans crossed the border after Pearl Harbor to join the U.S. Armed Forces. As recently as the Persian Gulf War, Mexicans flooded American consulates with phone calls, trying to join up and fight another war for America. Mexicans, you see, never forget who their friends are, and neither do Americans. That’s why Cinco de Mayo is such a party -- A party that celebrates freedom and liberty. There are two ideals which Mexicans and Americans have fought shoulder to shoulder to protect, ever since the 5th of May, 1862. It simply amazes us that the average American citizen has no idea of the severity and implications of this war. We do this because we feel that in the name of humanity the people of Mexico need our help. The American people should also help for a couple of other good reasons. We as a country play a major responsibility for causing this war by our insatiable appetite for illegal drugs. dollars a week and a drug cartel leader was listed by Forbes Magazine as one of the 10 richest men in the world. The country has painted themselves into a corner. The Mexican government has lost all sovereignty to huge portions of their country to the drug cartels and general lawlessness. The choice for Mexico now is clear. Do they allow drug cartels to flourish, as a state within a state? They must defeat the cartels or back down and turn the keys of Mexico over to them and reserves to give them meaningful breaks from combat. Ciudad Juarez is the murder capitol of the world. Last year, over 2,500 people were murdered in the city. In Ciudad Juarez alone, 1/4 of the population has fled the city, leaving behind 100,000 abandoned homes and 40% of the businesses have closed. If Mexico implodes we will feel the impact. Millions of Mexican refugees will flee the drug war and criminal violence and cross the border completely overwhelming our border Major military battles not seen since the 1910 Mexican revolution are occurring daily in Mexico. Many of these battles are fought within a few feet on our border and are terrorizing American border cities. Stray gunfire from these battles has killed American citizens and terrified Americans in Texas neighborhoods can hear explosions from heavy weapons and hand grenades in battle. The drug cartels are ruthless murderers of innocent and guilty alike. They routinely commit bloody atrocities cutting off the heads of police officers and soldiers and they massacre innocent men, women and children without mercy. The drug cartels make the Al Quida terrorists look like a bunch of cub scouts. American sheriff ’s and police departments are pleading for help. They are outnumbered, outgunned and are not able to defend themselves against the power of the cartels. One sheriff ’s department along the Texas/Mexican border only has 28 deputies. They are civilian police agencies and not designed to defend themselves or their communities against this type of military strength threat. Their whole department could be massacred if attacked by the cartels. The Phoenix police department in Arizona has been feeling the spillover from the drug war. They have on average one kidnapping a day and have an entire kidnapping investigative unit with detectives and SWAT team just to handle all the kidnappings. At least one American Army general has testified to the grave severity of the current situation in Mexico and his comments paint a very bleak picture. Mexico is at a crossroad in history. The people of Mexico are paying the price for years of a corrupt oligarchy. Mexico, a third world country, has more millionaires per capita than any other country in the world and has the richest man in the world with more money than Bill Gates while half the people languish in poverty. Some cartels are raking in 250 million publicly denounced by the world and go down in history for the criminal cowards they were. President Calderon does not have much time left. If he is not able to defeat the cartels by the next election or if the country implodes there will be plenty of rival political parties and candidates willing to get into bed with the devil. They will promise the Mexican people that they will end the war, which will translate to we go back to business as usual. They will cut a deal with the drug cartels. The drug cartels will be allowed to operate, the army will return to their barracks, the police will be emasculated, corruption will again be the order of business. The cartels will be the real government. The new political government officials, the oligarchy and the cartels will line their pockets with money while the masses will remain poor with little to no way out of poverty and at the mercy to the whims of drug cartel warlords. With the lack of a functioning Mexican government, the US will then have to decide if we will work with the drug cartels. The American people share responsibility for this war. Our demand for the drugs, our cash and our guns fuel the war. Most of the guns used by the cartels against the military and police are bought legally and illegally in American gun stores and then smuggled into Mexico. The US has few options to help the Mexican people rid themselves of this hellhole. The Blackhawk army helicopters the Obama administration is sending to the Mexican Army is too little, too late. The next California election will complicate matters when its voters decriminalize Marijuana. Why should Mexican soldiers and police officers die fighting the drug cartels to stop the smuggling of a drug the American people want so bad that they are decriminalizing it. What if anything can the US do to keep Mexico from imploding? become a failed state run by warlords similar to Somalia. The American CIA, Army and Pentagon have prepared secret plans for the collapse of the Mexican government because it is a real possibility. The Mexican Army, Navy and Marines have been deployed in combat for 4 years now without a break and no end is in sight (American soldiers in Iraq and Afghanistan are normally rotated after a 12 month combat tour). The Mexican troops are exhausted and there are no states ability to care for them. Despite his political critics, Mexican President Felipe Calderon has done what no other president has done since the 1910 revolution. He has shown bravery and courage putting his own life and the lives of his family on the line. He has finally told his people that we must admit there is an elephant in the living room and quit pretending it’s not there. Every other Mexican president before him that has allowed the government corruption and drug cartels to flourish deserve to be Please join the discussion, give us your feedback and let the world know your opinion at the Fugitive Watch web site www.fugitive.com Fugitive Watch®News FW may 2010 27 Fugitive Watch®News FW may 2010 28 Hey Moe, Hey Larry, I can’t see! Meza’s right testicle did not survive the encounter and was removed by a surgeon in a hospital northeast of Lima. DJ brags to Howard Stern about not paying taxes. IRS not amused. A New York City disc jockey had a good plan for putting a little extra money into his retirement plan - by not paying taxes for three years. Figuring that wasn’t enough, he decided to tweak the nose of the IRS by bragging about it on the Howard Stern Show. The IRS was listening. They weren’t amused. The DJ has been sentenced to a year in prison - and he must pay the taxes he owes. Woman calls police, goes to jail A Decatur, Alabama woman called police to say that someone had broken into her home. When officers arrived to check things out, they searched her home. Inside, police found a stolen .38 caliber revolver, crack cocaine and powder cocaine. Needless to say, the woman who called police ended up getting arrested. Car thief calls police A Baltimore man called police Tuesday morning to say his white Nissan Maxima had been stolen from in front of his apartment building. Instead of getting his car back, police arrested him and jailed him on charges of armed robbery, possession of a stolen car and a handgun violation. It seems the car he reported stolen wasn’t his. Police say he had stolen it at gunpoint two weeks earlier. The only reason he couldn’t find it was because the victim had spotted it and called police, who towed it away. Why do you press harder on the buttons of a remote control when you know the batteries are dead? Why do we put suits in garment bags and garments in a suitcase? How come abbreviated is such a long word? Why do we wash bath towels? Aren’t we clean when we use them? Why doesn’t glue stick to the inside of the bottle?
