When we pray, is God listening? Of course He is. God knows when we pray, and He knows everything about us. He knows more about us than we know about ourselves, the good and the bad. And He loves us and cares for us. These are truths we can count on. We have several things to pray for now. First, we must pray for our nation and our Church. We’ve all seen the headlines, we’ve heard the news and we’ve seen it on TODAY’S READINGS television. It seems like there’s a shooting a week. We wonder where the terrorists will strike next. People are frightened and confused. Stress levels are high and getting First Reading — Abraham higher. We wonder if it’s safe to go out of our homes. We wonder if it’s safe to stay in bargains with God to spare our homes. the city (Genesis 18:20-32). We belong to the Lord and to His Church. We know that the Church and her members have been through even tougher times than these. In other parts of the world right now, Christians are suffering tremendous persecution. But Jesus promised that the gates of hell will not prevail against His Church. We need to pray to the Lord, and to trust in Him even in dark times. This too shall pass. Psalm — Lord, on the day I called for help, you answered me (Psalm 138). Second Reading — Buried with Christ in baptism, we were also raised with him; Secondly, we all need to pray about Archbishop Gustavo’s Capital Campaign. The all our transgressions are Archbishop and our Archdiocese need help. Our Catholic schools, our seminary and forgiven (Colossians 2:12our seminarians, our retired priests, our parish buildings and other areas need our help. 14). The Archdiocese of San Antonio is growing. It is growing so much that Archbishop Gospel — Jesus speaks of Gustavo needs to open more parishes. We need more priests. So I ask all of Notre God’s sure response to Dame’s parishioners to pray about this Capital Campaign. I know you are already giving those who pray (Luke 11:1to the Church – for that I am grateful. Please pray and discern what else you may be 13). able to give, so that during these difficult times, we will know we have a strong, solid Church, a Church that is faithful to her Lord. Thirdly, for us here at Notre Dame, it’s time to begin thinking about Festival. It’s about eight weeks away, and those weeks will fly by. Pretty soon school will be starting again, and about a month after that is Festival. This will be my first Festival here at Notre Dame, but most of you have already been many times over the years. So please pray for this year’s Festival, for all who work so hard to organize it, all who work at the Festival, and for all who support the Festival with their contributions. Let’s all pray and make this year’s Festival a great success! Blessings! In Jesus, Fr. David SAINTS AND SPECIAL OBSERVANCES Sunday: Seventeenth Sunday in Ordinary Time Monday: St. James Tuesday: Ss. Joachim and Anne; World Youth Day, Krakow, Poland Friday: St. Martha Saturday: St. Peter Chrysologus; Blessed Virgin Mary LECTURAS DE LA SEMANA 2 Cor 4:7-15; Sal 126 (125):1bc-6; Mt 20:20-28 Martes: Jer 14:17-22; Sal 79 (78):8, 9, 11, 13; Mt 13:36-43 Miércoles: Jer 15:10, 16-21; Sal 59 (58):2 -4, 10-11, 17-18; Mt 13:44-46 Jueves: Jer 18:1-6; Sal 146 (145):1b6ab; Mt 13:47-53 Viernes: Jer 26:1-9; Sal 69 (68):5, 8-10, 14; Jn 11:19-27 o Lc 10:3842 Sábado: Jer 26:11-16, 24; Sal 69 (68):15-16, 30-31, 33-34; Mt 14:1-12 Domingo: Eccl 1:2; 2:21-23; Sal 90 (89):3-6, 12-14, 17; Col 3: 1-5, 9-11; Lc 12:13-21 Lunes: Decimoséptimo Domingo del Tiempo Ordinario 24 de julio de 2016 ¡Dios contesta nuestras oraciones! Estamos a ocho semanas y pasarán volando. The Cup By Paul Turner La Copa Por Paul Turner Some of the newest words in the Mass are addressed to communicants when they hear, “The Blood of Christ.” Most Catholics grew up receiving communion under one form. Many of them continue this practice although the cup is offered on many more occasions. The presentation of the cup has not yet been received with the enthusiasm reserved for the Sacred Host. Yet, the Order of Mass encourages us: “Holy communion has a more complete form as a sign when it is received under both kinds. For in this manner of reception, a fuller light shines on the sign of the eucharist banquet. Moreover, there is a clearer expression of that will by which the new and everlasting covenant is ratified in the blood of the Lord.” At the beginning, of course, sharing the Body and Blood of the Lord was common. Eucharist evolved from the meal traditions of the people. Abstaining from the cup would have been as strange as not taking any drink with the evening meal. During the middle ages, the sharing of the cup became less frequent. When heretics began denying the real presence of Christ in the Eucharist, devotion became stricter. People gradually felt unworthy to receive communion and left that to the clergy. The fear of spilling the cup, the simplicity of not offering it, and the danger of spreading disease all contributed to the practice of giving communion under one from only when people chose to receive. Because we have always believed Christ was present in the host as well as the cup, people reasoned they did not need both for the true experience of communion. However, today we think twice about this minimalism. Although Christ is truly present in either the bread or the wine, a “fuller light shines on the eucharistic banquet” when we take both. When drinking from the cup, first say “Amen” to the minister, in a sincere tone that reveals your faith in the blood of Christ before you. Then receive the cup with both hands, and take a drink. A good sip. Somewhere between whetting the lips and swallowing hard. Enjoy the full symbol of the eucharistic banquet with reverence and delight. Copyright © 1997 Resource Publications, Inc., 160 E. Virginia St. #290, San Jose, CA 95112, (408)286-8505. VINNIE’S ON BROADWAY NOTES FROM THE HEART BooksToBorrow The volunteers at St. Vincent de Paul on Broadway would like to share with you our work that your donations and thrift shop support make possible while keeping confidential the identities of our brothers and sisters in need that we assist. from the Notre Dame Parish Library are available in the narthex of the church, near the bell tower door. We are adding to the library the books of the People of God series from the Liturgical Press. Each is less than 150 pages long, and gives a look at a twentieth century Catholic. The Numbers Here are the April-May-June quarter stats. 98 volunteers offered 6,222 hours of service. The thrift shop grossed $54,853 in sales. Notre Dame second collection for the entire quarter was $11,048, while San Antonio The Big Give netted us $886.90. We provided 4,489 people in 1,597 families with 24,445 meals. Financial aid office assisted with utilities, prescriptions, and other needs totaling $37,500. Also, clothing and household goods vouchers were given for the Thrift shop. Upkeep expenses coming from gross store sales included replacing 1 of 6 AC units, a down payment to replace the warehouse elevator, 1 of 2 cooler compressors, and new doorknobs. As usual, $0 for salaries! This was a good, that is slow, quarter for aid. July has started with a large increase for need. The People We helped a woman fill out change of address forms. She was moving to a smaller unit in her complex and still had to do all the forms for mail, etc. We talked a single mom that was between teaching jobs and had no summer income to go visit Dad for a month. We helped contribute to assistance for a mother and child both having been extremely abused and now returning home to the Hill Country. We enjoyed a youngling that enthusiastically fulfilled community service hours with us and has promised to continue volunteering and since she is only 14, we figure she has at least 70 more years. A local charity has decided to require a 1040 or some other income proof before offering assistance. We are keeping our policy that a 2015 tax form does not show income for July 2016. It also does not show large medical bills or car repairs. If people come to us needing food, they are not turned away. If people come to us not having a driver's license, they are not turned away. Mostly we help with utility bills. Name and address on the bill can be checked with our records. We gently help our neighbors stay in the path God wants them to take. WISH LIST: To spend an hour of service with us a week. We need things like straightening the store, answering phones, greeting people as they enter the store, and cleaning donations. Also, new shelf signs made, for anyone with artistry skills or computer programs. Jean Vanier: Logician of the Heart, by Michael W. Higgins James Clarke calls this book about the founder of L’Arche “an eloquent and moving meditation on what it means to be truly human in a ‘throwaway’ culture where competition, corporate greed, and inequality reign supreme. Vanier’s work among the physically and intellectually vulnerable reveals the cost and joy of radical love. By emphasizing our common frailty and the openness and capacity of the disabled to allow Jesus to find repose in their hearts – he challenges us to enflesh tenderness in our own lives, become ‘God’s refuge’ in a largely uncaring world.” Fans of Henri Nouwen will especially enjoy chapter seven, “The Marriage of Heaven and Hell: Vanier and Nouwen”. And those who love to learn more about Pope St. John Paul II and Vatican II will get a kick out of chapter six, “Vanier and Wojtyla”.
