23RD SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
First Reading: Wisdom 9:13-18
We are called to open our minds to God’s gift of Wisdom if we want to learn
the truth of God’s intentions.
Second Reading: Philemon 9:10. 12-17
From prison, Paul seeks to restore Onesimus to Philemon, no longer seen as the
world sees him– as a slave– but as a dear brother.
Gospel: Luke 13:22-30
People crowd round to learn from Jesus. But he cautions them: to be a real
disciple of his is costly.

FROM THE OGLE OFFICE
Dear Friends,
The end of the summer is marked by returns from
vacation, many school buses in the streets, and (slightly)
cooling temperatures. It also is marked by the resumption
of the pace of pastoral life as we begin to engage again in
the pastoral, catechetical, liturgical and social activities
that mark our daily efforts to bring the truth of Christ’s
gospel into our world. One of the most important of those
are our efforts to prepare adults to enter the Catholic
church or complete their initiation. The normal process for
doing so is the Rite of Christian Initiation of adults, or the
“RCIA”. Typically inquirers into the faith or those wishing to
complete or refresh their catechesis meet weekly with a
team of mentors until receiving the sacraments at Holy
Week. Those sessions start later this month, so now is the
time
to
contact
me
to
register
([email protected] ) and begin the process.
Perhaps you have a friend or neighbor who might be interested. Invite them to come talk it over with any of our
staff.
Our religious education program is in need of additional catechists to teach religion to our children, as some
of our long-time catechists have retired. Please contact our
director, Nelly Gutierrez, if you might be able to help us in
some capacity. Nelly is at rectory extension # 14 or at [email protected].
Do join us for our anniversary year “SUPER-BINGO”
on Friday, September 23, 2016 from 7:00 pm until 11:00
pm for a night of fun, great company and cash prizes. The
total prize amount of all games throughout the night will
be $1,000! Admission is $5 per person plus the cost of the
bingo cards. Water will be available for sale. Bring whatever snacks and beverages you want! No one under 18
years of age will be admitted. Doors open at 6:00 pm in the
Mount Carmel Institute - gym! For more information: 718278-1834 or email: [email protected].
God love you,
Msgr. Sean G. Ogle
DE EL PASTOR
Queridos amigos,

loving Father, we pray for all who shoulder the tasks of
human labor – in the marketplace, in factories and offices, in the professions, and in family living.
We thank you, Lord, for the gift and opportunity of work;
may our efforts always be pure of heart, for the good of
others and the glory of your name.

We lift up to you all who long for just employment and
those who work to defend the rights and needs of workers everywhere.
May those of us who are now retired always remember
that we still make a valuable contribution to our Church
and our world by our prayers and deeds of charity.
May our working and our resting all give praise to you
until the day we share together in eternal rest with all
our departed in your Kingdom as you live and reign Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, one God, forever and ever.
Amen.

BROOKLYN DIOCESAN MARIAN PILGRIMAGE – WASHINGTON, DC –
SATURDAY, OCTOBER 29, 2016
This coming October 29th, the last Saturday of the month, we’ll be going to THE BASILICA OF THE NATIONAL
SHRINE OF THE IMMACULATE CONCEPTION.

This Pilgrimage is a tribute to Mary which we, as a Diocese, make every other year. This is not meant to be a
tour, but rather a spiritual journey to honor our Blessed Mother and pray for the needs of our country, our diocese and our parish family.

Since this will be a one-day trip, we’re aiming to make the journey with one 15 minute stop each way. The
estimated time for the trip, with a short stop will be approximately 5 hours and we plan on leaving by 6:00AM
so we can arrive at the Shrine by 11:00AM.

Our plans include being greeted by our Bishop, Nicholas DiMarzio, a multi-lingual Rosary service at 12 Noon, an
opportunity to celebrate the Sacrament of Confession, and a Concelebrated Mass at 3:00PM. The Liturgy
should conclude at 5:00PM. Departure for the trip home will begin immediately.

A one-day trip like this can be exhausting, but please keep in mind that this is a spiritual Pilgrimage to our Lady
and the inconvenience of the trip itself is part of the sacrifice. This Pilgrimage is open to the entire Parish and not
limited in any way, with the exception of unaccompanied children.

We are planning to have 2 buses each with 54 people leaving from right here in front of our church. If
we don’t have enough people to fill a bus, we will have to go with another parish. The entire cost is $60 per
person and this will include water, snacks, tip for the bus driver and donation made to the Basilica. Payment can
be made by check written to “Our Lady of Mount Carmel” or cash and you will be given a receipt

The Shrine does have a cafeteria with modest prices, however, the facilities are limited to 288 people at one
time, and there could be long waits… you could be disappointed or become frustrated. It’s recommended that
each of us bring our lunches as well as non-perishable items such as juice boxes or fruit.
Please remember that the Bishop’s hope and aim is that this be a spiritual Pilgrimage with our Blessed
Mother as the focal point of the entire day.
Thank you for your attention and God Bless you and your family.
