- Lc 9, 35-36 2 Welcome to St. Therese Parish · Appleton, WI “Notes from Fr. Bill” Blessed Father Elías Nieves The Augustinian priest, Fra Elías del Socorro, (Mateo Elías Nieves del Castillo) died a martyr on March 10th, 1928 in Cortazar, Mexico. At that time he was the pastor of Our Lady of Sorrows parish in La Cañada, Guanajuato, MX; many of our parishioners are from La Cañada or the surrounding towns and villages. “I will not abandon you, neither alive nor dead.” These were the words of Fr. Nieves to his people when ordered by the Mexican government to abandon his parish. It was a return to the catacombs of persecution of the church in the Roman empire …Fr. Nieves living in a cave outside of town for fourteen months. The faithful journeyed to that cave as to a chapel in the catacombs, to be able to go to Confession, assist at Mass, have their children baptized, to celebrate their faith. Not far away is the ranch “San Pablo” (St. Paul) where the bothers Jesús and Dolores Sierra lived (28 and 21 years old respectively). Fr. Nieves was detained by the military in their home, and these two young men refused to abandon their parish priest …they were assassinated before his eyes. It’s a formidable testimony of their faith and solidarity put to test at an early age. My return trip to La Cañada last November was very special for me …leading me to a deeper appreciation for the love and devotion that so many of our parishioners have for Fr. Nieves. This coming Sunday they invite us to join in celebrating the feast day of “Padre Elías” ..there will be food, and a dramatization of his life. Won’t you join us! “The faith I have when I am in the Presence of the Blessed Sacrament is so strong that I find it impossible to express what I feel… When the time comes to leave I must force myself to overcome the inclination to prolong my stay with Jesus.” Operation Rice Bowl Second Week of Lent - The Transfiguration Jesus' transfiguration was a moment of hope for the disciples, giving them the strength to endure the future sacrifices they would make as they formed the early Church. As we continue our journey with Catholic Relief Services' Operation Rice Bowl, let us be mindful that our Lenten sacrifices help to give hope to our brothers and sisters in need.
