Will You Forget God, the The Past: How Did They Use That?
By: Kent Ambrose &

Soldier, and the Veteran
Community Writers
San Bernardino County
on Veterans Day?
Museum Curator Michele
Etched onto the wall of a
sentry box in Gibraltar is an
unsigned indictment from an
unknown soldier. Imagine him
there many wars ago, keeping
watch and weighing his prospects for a normal life.
“God and the soldier, all men
adore
In time of danger and not before.
When the danger is passed
and all things righted,
God is forgotten, and the soldier (and the veteran) slighted.”
President Kennedy quoted this
verse in 1962 to the men of the
Army’s 1st Armored Division,
which had been moved secretly
into position during the Cuban
speak for others, but from me,
HEARTFELT GRATITUDE.”
So how we treat soldiers and
veterans every day and on Veterans Day, not only reflects on our
character, but also our nation.
American’s first commander
in chief, President George Washington, got it right when he said,
“The willingness with which
young people are likely to serve
in any war, no matter how justified, shall be directly proportional to how they perceived veterans
were treated and appreciated by
our nation.”
We may not always agree with
the war in Afghanistan, but still
we should support all our men
and women in uniform. Because
missile crisis. “This country
does not forget God or the soldier,” Kennedy said. “Upon both
we now depend.”
How about it, have you forgotten God, the soldier and the
veteran? How we treat our soldiers and our veterans, not only
on Veterans Day, but every day,
says a lot about us and our character. In these days, it isn’t pretty
or complimentary.
Infantryman Fred Downs returned from Vietnam with four
Purple Hearts, a Bronze Star and
one arm. Back in school, he was
asked if he’d lost his arm in the
war. “Yes,” he said. “Serves you
right,” he was told.
Diana Sholley, has the right
attitude when she wrote, “ ‘Freedom isn’t free.’ That’s not a catch
phrase---it’s a price tag.
The cost? Too many times---a
life---but that’s not all.
War has taken its payment in
limbs, families and even sanity.”
She continues, “Some scars
you see; some you don’t, but
anyone who goes to war pays a
price.
What do they get in return
from those they fight for? I can’t
of their sacrifice, they have provided us with the freedoms and
the liberty we all enjoy.
Carved on a plaque at the Viet
Nam Memorial, in Washington,
DC, are these words:
“Our Nation Honors Her Sons
And Daughters Who Answered
The Call To Defend a Country
They Never Knew And A People
They Never Met.”
I fly my American flag and my
POW/MIA flag every day. Also
I say a prayer for every soldier
serving our country today, and
every veteran who has served in
the past.
As a combat wounded veteran
of WW II, my heart cries to think
that about 2,000 of my WW II
buddies are dying every day.
Therefore, on this Veterans
Day, and every day, everyone
should remember God, the soldier, and the veteran and say a
prayer for them for making our
lives better and our country safer.

Member of Support Our Troops
Committee, Loma Linda University Seventh-day Adventist
church, retired pastor
Nielsen presented her interactive program, “How did
they use that?” on Friday
November 4th at the Agua
Mansa Museum. Visitors
were invited to explore the
ways household technologies
worked--before electronics.
Michele demonstrated 19th
century skills like traditional
butter churning, wool combing, spinning and thread
making, Elizabethan handwriting, hand-loom weaving,
and even demonstrated the
use of several collection artifacts like the flat iron.
Michele began the program by reading from an 1879
Household Encyclopedia that
gave directions on domestic
skills that were necessary
in maintaining a house-hold
during the 19th Century. It
included directions on how
to gauge the temperature on
your stove, how to make lemon drops, and how to make
your own soap.
“Today, we use a variety
of devices to clean our homes
and clothing, to prepare and
cook foods, to communicate with each other, and
to do all sorts of everyday
tasks”, shared Nielsen, “but
while current technology has
changed the look of how we
do these things, we really are
doing the same things people
did one hundred years ago.”

(ARA) - Buying a home is
more than numbers, dollars and
cents. The pride of owning your
own home is an incredible feeling, providing a place for you
and your family to come together and build memories.
For many, getting through
the process of buying a home
can be daunting, if not downright frightening. Talk to anyone considering buying a home
for the first time, and many will
say the same thing: “There’s
so much information - I don’t
know where to start or where
to turn for answers. It’s overwhelming.”
With all the potential pitfalls
out there, it’s key to arm yourself with the right tools to help
you navigate the intricacies of
the home buying process. Getting the right information and
help along the way will make
this milestone purchase easier
and hassle-free.
Knowledge is power
While partnering with a real
estate agent and knowledgeable
mortgage lender will go a long
way towards home buying success, empowering yourself is
also important. You are not
alone, but you’re also your
own best advocate.
Learn about the neighborhoods where you might want
to live, and think about your
day-to-day lifestyle when deciding what area - and type of
home - is right for you. Take a
home buyer education course
- they’re often free and will
help prepare you for the home
buying process. The U.S. Department of Housing (www.hud.
gov), NeighborWorks America
(www.nw.org), and the National
Foundation for Credit Counseling (www.nfcc.org) are all great
resources for further education
on buying a home. Or you can
check with your bank - some,
like TD Bank, offer sites that
provide one-stop shop info on
buying your first home.
Real-ing and dealing
Partnering with a real estate
agent can help make the process
of buying your first home more
efficient and hassle-free. A real
estate professional will help you
assess your needs and wants in
a home, and then utilize that information to narrow the field of
available homes in your price
range to a manageable pool.
Well-versed in the local area, a
real estate professional can help
ensure you’re getting a better
price, will negotiate on your behalf, and can protect your rights
as a homebuyer. Your agent also
may be able to make mortgage
lender recommendations.
Find a financial partner,
not just mortgage rates
Like buying a home,
choosing a mortgage provider is about more than
terms and rates - it’s about
finding a company that has
the knowledge to help you
succeed.
“Find a lender who is also
your financial partner,” says
Mike Copley, executive vice
president, retail lending at TD
Bank. “Your mortgage advisor
should work with you to find
the borrowing solution that’s
right for you, and make the experience as straightforward and
hassle-free as possible. Your
lender’s commitment to you
shouldn’t end with the closing
of your loan.”
Some things to consider when
selecting a mortgage lender:
Will I be supported from application to closing - and beyond?
Are there application fees? How
quickly will I have a decision on
my application? What type of
mortgage should I choose? Does
my mortgage provider service
their own loans, or can they be
sold to another institution later?
Does my mortgage provider
have a strong customer service
focus, so I can ensure my needs
are being met? The answers to
these questions will help you
forge the right partnership with
the right mortgage lender.
There’s nothing to fear about
buying your first home if you’re
an educated consumer who
finds the right real estate and
mortgage team to help you
make your dreams come true.
So get out there and find your
dream home!
Selling your Home out of Season? A Great Deck Makes a Difference
living space.
Decks, patios, and sunrooms
have always been popular with
home buyers, but real estate
agents say that too often those
spaces are neglected or not
used to their best advantage.
Yet outdoor improvements like
a deck can significantly enhance your home’s value and
appeal. In fact, at the time of
resale, a deck will
recoup, on average,
about 73 percent of
the original cost of
building it, according to Remodeling
Magazine’s Cost
vs. Value report.
“Anything that
adds living space
adds value, and
the least expensive
way to gain space
is to build a deck
or turn the one you have into an
outdoor room by staging it so
that it flows seamlessly with the
rest of the house,” says Mary
Beth Harrison of The Harrison
Group, a Dallas-based real estate agency. “A great deck can
set your home apart from others with the same interior floor
plan or square footage, and deck
additions typically add value
when it comes time to sell.”
The cooler temperatures of
fall and early winter make the
season a great time to add a
deck to your home. Or, if you
already have a deck, you can
enhance its appeal by adding
simple touches and accessories.
A bonus space - for example,
a tiny deck or rarely used balcony off a master bedroom - can
be transformed into a romantic
getaway by staging it with cozy,
cushioned seating and a raised
firepit. You can safeguard your
deck and add designer style
with Latitudes deck stones, 16inch interlocking square tiles
made of natural slate or granite. Deck stones can provide an
effective fire barrier that’s an
asset under firepits or grills, or
when used to create an outdoor
kitchen.
Lighting is another way to
boost appeal. LED deck lighting kits, like those offered by
Deckorators, are both practical
and visually appealing. Adding
lighting to a deck can be an important safety feature, and also
helps create a warm, welcoming
mood for evening entertaining.
“More than ever before,
people look at their decks as
outdoor entertainment areas,”
says Chris Fox of Universal
Forest Products, producers of
Latitudes Composite decking
and Railing and Deckorators,
a leader in decking railing systems and deck accessories.
“For some, it’s a kitchen; for
others, a living room. Decks
can be party spaces or quiet retreats. With so many different
types of deck materials, lighting, rail systems and decorative
accents, it’s possible to turn a
plain deck into a great outdoor
space.”
“Potential home buyers always react positively to nice
decks that look like a great
place to hang out,” says Harrison.
“From a buyer’s perspective,
if all else is equal, it’s true that
the home with the best deck
wins.”

Create the Ultimate At-Home Stadium Experience This Sports Season
(ARA) - With fall in the air,
that means one thing for sports
fans: its game time. Between
the hard-hitting pro and college
football seasons moving into
high gear, the puck dropping
on the hockey season and heartpounding UFC and boxing
cards, sports fans have countless games, matches and battles
to enjoy.
Not convinced that sports
mean that much to die-hard
fans? Take March Madness,
for example: Worker distraction due to the first week of
the NCAA Men’s Basketball

of the NCAA Tournament on

While fans love the live experience of watching all the

that makes it to every game so
it’s important to have the best
back-up alternative: the right
home set up.

a standard-definition TV no
longer does the trick. A highdefinition (HD) television, particularly LED back-lit, is a musthave for watching any game,
and fans are tuning in from
home in numbers well into the
millions. For example, Nielsen
ratings show that the NFL set a
record in 2010 by reaching 207.7
million viewers throughout the
year.
HD makes the action look
better than ever, but its 3-D that
really puts you IN the action.
With networks like ESPN showing more live sports content in
3-D, now is the time for sports
fans to give 3-D TV a shot. With
the right TV, even if your game
isn’t being broadcast in 3-D, you
can still get the in-your-face action you crave. For example, LG
offers a 2-D to 3-D conversion
miles just to watch their favorite team - just listen to St. Louis
Cardinals fans at Chicago Cubs
games, or Detroit Red Wings
fans at hockey games in Florida.

Roger Daltrey Rocks the Inland Empire
By: Jules E. Beuck
Entertainment Writer
Roger Daltrey has been
making music with ‘The Who’
since 1965. The band, having
been decimated by the deaths
of Keith Moon in the seventies
and John Entwistle in 2002,
has not been as active as they
once were. Daltrey was evidently feeling a bit antsy and
put together a band of his own
to tour performing “Tommy.”
He brought that tour to Nokia
Theater, LA Live.
The band performed “Tommy” much closer to the original than the Who ever did.
They even used some of the
guitar sound effects that were
on the original album. The
backing vocals and harmonies
were spot on.
Video screens at stage left
and behind Daltrey had cartoon like images to go along
with each song. When he finished “Tommy” the images
shifted to him live.
Other Who songs he performed included “The Kids
Are Alright,” “Pictures Of
Lilly,” “Young Man Blues,”
“Baba O’Riley,” and “Behind
Blue Eyes,”
From his solo career he per-
Roger Daltrey of ‘The Who’ performing “Tommy”
formed “Without Your Love,”
“A Second Out” and “Days Of
Light.” He also performed covers of other artists. Off of the
album “Largo” he performed
Taj Mahal’s “Freedom Ride.”
He also did a rousing medley
of Johnny Cash’s songs which
culminated with “Ring Of
Fire.” On “Ring of Fire” he had
first the ladies sing the chorus
and then the men and then everyone. He finished with “Blue,
Red and Grey.”
He was backed by a five
piece band that included Simon Townshend, Pete Townshend’s brother, on guitar. Simon looks, moves and sounds
like his older brother. He performed the vocals on “Going
Mobile.” Roger told the crowd
that Simon was his brother
and that his name was Simon
Townsend Daltrey.
Daltrey was in pretty good
voice (though there were some
notes he had trouble with) and
played a lot more guitar than
he does with The Who. Consequently, there was not a whole
lot of his signature swinging
of the microphone cord. Even
when he did swing the microphone he seemed rather tentative about it. Although he did
tease the drummer as on some

songs the songs ends when
Roger catches the mike so he
would keep swinging it to tease
the drummer.
Opening the show was singer song writer Paul Freeman.
Having just an acoustic guitar the Welsh born performer went through a set of his
originals such as “Tightrope,”
“The Girl Who Broke In Two,”
and “That’s How It Is,” mixed
with covers such as the Traveling Wilbury’s “Handle With
Care.” Freeman was very personable and had a good sense
of humor. For example at one
point he started what sounded like “Pinball Wizard.” He
abruptly stopped proclaiming
“I’m not that stupid.”
He also brought a woman onstage and had her sing
“na na na” to a melody as he
walked away strumming his
guitar. The audience appeared
to enjoy him.
The crowd was very enthusiastic. They sang along with
every Who song and rewarded
Daltrey with many standing
ovations.

The Beautiful Truth of Aging - 4 Steps for a Healthy and Active Mind
(ARA) - With age comes
the inevitable anxiety of mental decline. A common misconception is brain health is
predetermined and can’t be
changed - it’s the “you’re stuck
with what you got” notion. But
experts suggest brain health
can be positively influenced
throughout different stages in
life.
A recent state-by-state ranking, America’s Brain Health
Index, delivers data on how
well Americans are successfully incorporating the four dimensions of brain health - diet
and nutrition, physical health,
mental health and social wellbeing - into their daily lives.
The top-ranked state Maryland - scored highest on
the Index because of residents’
performance on a number of
health markers, including high
consumption of fish rich in
DHA and DHA-fortified foods
and supplements, as well as a
low incidence of Alzheimer’s
disease-related deaths. Residents of the states that ranked
the lowest (Mississippi and
Louisiana) can make adjustments to help get their brains
in shape. See where your state
ranked at www.beautifulminds.com.
“Whether we live in the topranked states or in the areas
that are below average, there
are several ways to nurture
and engage the mind to keep it
healthy throughout our lives,”
says Dr. Majid Fotuhi, chairman of the Neurology Institute
for Brain Health and Fitness,
and assistant professor of neurology at Johns
Hopkins University School
of Medicine.
“All too often
I work with
patients who
need to make
only a few
lifestyle adjustments to
see a marked
change in their
mental acuity.
It’s never too
late to take
action to improve your brain health.”
Four easy steps to a beautiful mind
Step 1 - Get moving
Engage in physical activity
for at least 30 minutes a day to
encourage new brain cells and
connections to form. Walk,
take the stairs instead of the elevator, play sports or do something you enjoy outdoors.
Step 2 - Nourish your body
and mind
Aim for a varied diet rich in
colorful, fresh fruits and vegetables, washed with the skin
on to take full advantage of
the nutritional punch. Maximize your intake of DHA, the
omega-3 fatty acid that makes
up 97 percent of the omega-3s
in the brain. Find it in fatty
fish (salmon, tuna) or, if you
are vegetarian, you can find it
in algal DHA-fortified foods
and beverages like juice, milk,
eggs and in algal DHA supplements, including the Algal-900
DHA and BrainStrong lines
found at CVS, Walgreens and
Walmart. Find other products
with algal DHA at www.lifesdha.com.
Step 3 - Embrace new activities
Commit to lifelong learn-
ing, which can take the form
of brain-stimulating activities,
including reading, creating art,
completing crosswords, learning a new language or playing
a new instrument. Keep a mentally engaged mind by living
with a “use it or lose it” philosophy throughout
life.
“The aging
process involves
increasing physical and emotional
change
and a heightened
search for meaning and purpose,” says Gay
Hanna, executive
director of the
National Center
for Creative Aging in Washington, D.C. “Expressing oneself through the
creation of art can serve as a
powerful way to honor life experiences. Embrace the idea
of learning something new to
help fuel your creative fire.”
Step 4 - Expand your social
network
Stay socially connected so
you feel like you’re a part of
something. This can include
social connections at work, in
clubs, with friends and family
and through volunteer groups
or a religious congregation.
Experts theorize that having
a rich social network may also
help support brain health in a
variety of ways, from providing individuals better resources
and support, to reducing stress
and depression, to enhancing
intellectual stimulation.
Inspirational stories of how
people keep their minds beautiful can be found throughout
the world. In the No. 1 ranked
state - Maryland - 75-year-old
Ernestine Shepherd transformed herself from an average middle-aged woman with
a sedentary lifestyle into the
world’s oldest performing female bodybuilder according
to Guinness World Records.
Shepherd was recently named
a 2011 Beautiful Mind, a campaign honoring inspirational
adults over 55 who embody
the four dimensions of brain
health.
“It’s important for people to
know that age is just a number
and you can get fit for life. Just
be determined, dedicated and
disciplined. But first and foremost, be positive, confident
and filled with spirit,” says
Shepherd. To learn more about
brain health and to read inspiring stories from other Beautiful Minds visit www.beautiful-minds.com.
What’s on Your Holiday Shopping List this Year?
(ARA) - Holiday shopping
lists often contain toys, gift
cards and other material items
that the recipients can enjoy
and put to good use. But your
shopping list can go much
further to not only benefit the
recipients, but also a great
cause.
Make your holiday gifts
go further this holiday season with gifts that give back.
One way is to purchase gifts
through the American Diabetes Association’s Gift of Hope
catalog, where every penny of
profit goes directly to diabetes
research. In the last 40 years,
more than $24 million has
been raised.
Gift of Hope offers an exclusive line of items for everyone on your list:
* Holiday cards, many of
which were created by or dedicated to a person with diabetes
* Personalized photo gifts,
including holiday greeting
cards, travel mugs, phone
skins and more
* House wares and seasonal
gift items, such as plates, ornaments and hand towels
Catalog purchases are a
Gift of Hope to the nearly 26
million children and adults in
the U.S. who have diabetes,
including Kathy Howard from
St. Louis. In 2008 Howard
went to the
emergency
room thinking she had
the flu, only
to find out she
had a stroke
and type 2
diabetes.
“I couldn’t
even put into
words
the
shock
and
terror I felt
those
first

days,”
explains
Howard. “I
began a new
life the day I
went to the
hospital.”
Since her
stroke and
diagnosis
Howard has
lost
over
85 pounds
and
exercises regularly. “You
have to keep
working towards good
health,” she
says. “Don’t
wait
until
something
happens.”
Another
way to give back this holiday
season is to make a donation
in honor or memory of a loved
one. Gift of Hope offers honor
or memorial gift cards, which
represent a tax-deductible donation to diabetes research.
No matter which way you
give, buy gifts that support a

while also making a difference
in the lives of millions.
