EASTER SUNDAY OF THE R ESURRECTIOIN OF THE L ORD APRIL 20, 20 14 Resurrexit Sicut Dixit, Alleluia! This latin phrase we proclaim during the Easter season in the Marian hymn, Regina Coeli (which means Queen of Heaven). These words are those of the angel at the tomb in Matthew 28:6: he has risen, as he said. As he said. Those three words encapsulate the meaning of the hope of Easter. We cling to God's promises. All throughout the scriptures God speaks his promises that all the suffering and slavery of sin that we suffer will come to an end. He speaks this message in a final way through his son, Jesus. Jesus often spoke of what was to happen to him: The Son of Man must suffer many things and be rejected by the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed and be raised up on the third day (Luke 9:22). This was a tough message to swallow for many of his disciples. Even Peter, the Rock of the Church, initially rejected it. They resisted because they failed to listen to what he said. They became so focused on the darkness of the cross that they did not catch the last words: and be raised up on the third day. Perhaps to teach the disciples, or to give honor to the power of the Lord's words and promises, the angel said the words: as he said. Jesus has not stopped speaking. Every day and every years during Easter we remember that he said he would be raised and he was. Therefore, we can hear what he is saying now. He says through the Church, in the scriptures, in the Eucharist, in our good works, "I am risen! I am alive! And you will be too if you endure the cross with me! I have promised it and I will do it!" If we follow his words in our lives then we will also suffer, and die, and be raised up on the third day...as he said. ¡Resurrexit Sicut Dixit, Aleluya! Fr. The Catholic Home Missions Appeal will take place next week. One way that this Appeal works to support mission dioceses here at home is by supporting seminarian formation in poor dioceses. The blessing of seminarians places a financial burden on these dioceses, which educate each seminarian at a cost of $35,000–$40,000 per year. Your support is needed for these young men, so that they can return to serve their parishes. Please strengthen the Church at home by making a generous gift to next week’s Appeal. ¡Gracias! FR. BLAS PORTRAIT/RETRATO DEL PADRE BLAS Fr.
