SOCIAL CONCERNS
The Poor Box for the month of September is for
Bethesda Help, a non-profit, all-volunteer program
designed to provide emergency help to the working poor
and others when they are confronted with an immediate
but short-term need.
Sister Betsy Hartson RSCJ seeks gently-used and
working laptops with power adapters for Living
Wages, a nonprofit educational program for DC
residents age 25 and over seeking their high school
diplomas. If you can help, please leave your donation at
the rectory. Our parishioners have generously donated
to Sister Betsy's work in the past.
Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of Washington will
launch the Financial Stability Network (“Network”) this fall, a
network of volunteer accountants and financial advisors who
will provide pro bono financial education, financial coaching and
tax return preparation services. On Saturday, October 29,
(9.00 a.m.-2.00 p.m.) the Network will host its 1st Annual
Financial Wellness workshop at Gonzaga High School,
Washington DC, with keynote address from Michelle
Singletary (author and nationally-syndicated personal finance
columnist for the Washington Post), three panels of financial
advisors discussing effective ways to budget/save money and
several breakout groups to address specific questions
participants may have. Lunch will be provided and seating is
limited. All are welcome to attend, including accountants and
financial advisors, as well as parish leaders and community
organizers with members of the community they serve. The
Network is actively recruiting volunteers to meet the growing
financial literacy needs of our community - if you have any
type of financial experience and want to join or have questions
about the Network, please contact Deacon Jim Shanahan at

On behalf of Archbishop Roger Schwietz and the people
of the Archdiocese of Anchorage in Alaska, Fr. Scott
Garrett extends his gratitude for the warm and
welcoming reception you extended to him last weekend.
He thanks all those who so generously responded to his
appeal for funds to assist in the missionary work of the
Church in Alaska. If you wish to make further offerings

Book of the Week: Render Unto Caesar

BLESSING OF PETS - Tuesday, October 4 is the Feast of St.
Francis of Assisi. In honor of St. Francis, we invite everyone
to join us at 9.00 a.m. on SATURDAY, October 1, for the
Blessing of Animals at the St. Francis statue, across the
driveway in front of the Church. Please bring your animals on a
leash and provide for their management.
TWENTY-SIXTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
If you would like to sponsor flowers on the altar in
memory of loved ones, living or deceased, please
print your name, phone number, and the occasion or
loved one you wish to remember on a purple Flower
Contribution envelope, which you will find in the
church vestibule. Minimum contribution for two vases on the
main altar is between $90—100. Please drop off your
envelope in the collection basket, or call the parish office, 301
-229-7933, and your request will be posted in the weekly
bulletin.
We can only honor one individual request per weekend, so
please bear in mind that, sometimes, the date you require may
already be taken. Also, for your information, we will not be
able to accept requests for the sponsoring of flowers on
specific liturgical dates.
ADULT EDUCATION THREE UPCOMING LECTURES!
Thursday, October 6, 7.00 p.m., Church Hall Knight of Columbus, John Vivian, PGK, will present on
Christians at Risk in the Middle East – as the world
remains silent.
Tuesday, October 18, 7.30 p.m., Church Hall Dr. John Haught, Distinguished Research Professor
Georgetown University, will present on Science, Theology
and Pope Francis's Ecological Vision.
Saturday, November 5 and Saturday, November 12,
9.00 - 10.30 a.m., Church - Dr. Stefan Megyery will
present a two part lecture on Martin Luther and the
Church.

and grow in your knowledge of the Church.
St. Bart's Middle School Youth Group: we are 6th, 7th and
8th graders interested in serving our neighbor, playing
together and getting to know Our Lord Jesus Christ! All are

practices for the Junior Rock Band at St. Bartholomew
on Mondays after school - you will learn from two highly
regarded professional musicians and will have the
opportunity to perform at parish and/or school-wide

NEW ALTAR SERVER TRAINING for all those in
5th grade or higher! New Altar Server training is
scheduled for Mondays after school, 3.15 - 4.30
p.m., in October (October 3/10/17/24) as well as
Monday evenings 6.30 - 8.00 p.m. in October (as
above, October 3/10/17/24). All training will take place in the
Church and please plan on attending 4 consecutive sessions,
either after school on Mondays or on Monday evenings. The
Installation Mass will be at 10.00 a.m. on Sunday, November 6.

Walk with Francis 2.0 - in commemoration of the one-year
anniversary of the visit of His Holiness Pope Francis to the
United States, Catholic Charities invites you to join in the
Walk with Francis 2.0 pledge. This weekend, September 2425, celebrate the anniversary of the papal visit with a pledge
to recommit to prayer, service, and advocacy. Each family,
parish, or Catholic school is encouraged to take the Walk with
Francis 2.0 Pledge in honor of Pope Francis and his ministry
worldwide. Pledge cards are available at Mass this weekend.

Please mark your calendar this year’s 27th Annual East of the
River Fall Revival at Mount Calvary Catholic Church, 6700
Marlboro Pike, Forestville, MD 20747. The Revival will be held
on Monday through Thursday, October 3-6, beginning at
7:00 pm. Our revivalist is Father Anthony Bozeman, who has
won many honors and has served as a presenter of numerous
retreats, missions and revivals. He is the pastor of St.
Raymond and St. Leo the Great Parish, New Orleans, Louisiana.
The Revival will begin with praise and worship from 7:00 – 7:30
pm and there will be an opportunity for our faithful to take
advantage of the Sacrament of Reconciliation. Confessions will
be heard during praise and worship, nightly, with the exception
of Wednesday. On Wednesday, confessions will be held
immediately after the Revival program, with several
confessional stations available.
Centro Tepeyac Women’s Center invites you to our
annual GUADALUPE GALA dinner on October 8, at
6:30pm at The Shrine of St. Jude in Rockville. Dr.

25 DE SETIEMBRE 2016
La parábola de un hombre rico y la de un mendigo
llamado Lázaro nos enseña las consecuencias del
comportamiento del hombre alejado de Dios y la del
hombre creyente. El hombre rico vive alejado de Dios,
disolutamente, usando abusivamente de su riqueza. Es
soberbio,
injusto,
egoísta
y
avaro.
Usa
desordenadamente los bienes materiales. Lázaro es un
enfermo y un mendigo que pide limosna a las puertas de
la casa del rico sin que nadie le atienda. Es un hombre
que sufre y carece de lo necesario para vivir. Pero es un
hombre religioso que cree y espera en Dios. Compartir
los bienes es un deber que nace de nuestra condición de
hijos de Dios. Tenemos la obligación de trabajar por una
economía y sociedad más justa, de esto depende nuestra
fidelidad al Evangelio y nuestra salvación.

RCIA (Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults) - The process of becoming a Catholic

Pastoral Care of the Sick and Homebound—Please notify the Rectory Office if you
know of any parishioner who is sick or homebound and who would like to receive
Holy Eucharist or the Sacrament of the Sick so that we can arrange to take him/her the
Eucharist or the Sacrament of the Sick.
