SISD Bond 2004 projects on track The 2007-08 school year marked the opening of three new schools for SISD: Options High School, Dr. Sue Shook Elementary and Chester E. Jordan Elementary. The campuses are among numerous projects in the Districts $188.6 million bond issue passed three years ago. The 2004 Bond projects are expected to be completed next year. "Our 2004 Bond program is on track," said SISD Superintendent Dr. Sylvia P. Atkinson. "Thanks to the support of our Board of Trustees and the hard work of our Operational and Finance Services folks we are moving forward to meet the needs of our community at a much lower than expected cost to our taxpayers." SISD Board President Charles E. Garcia agrees. "We are very fortunate to have a great leadership team on top of these projects. I am very proud of the work the District has accomplished so far and look forward to projects that will house our growing student population which is expected to top 40,000 this year." Other 2004 Bond projects include a new elementary school in the Lower Valley, an ROTC firing range, the Districts 5th high school which will be located off Eastlake Drive and a 9th grade center, which will become the Districts 6th high school east of Joe Battle off Pebble Hills. "We are on schedule. We have every major project committed to being either under contract with architects and Construction Managers at Risk, in design, under construction or completed," says Tom Eyeington, SISD Assistant Superintendent of District Operations. "We are meeting the goals of the 2004 Bond." SISDs Options High School offers an innovative program to help students who may have trouble succeeding in a traditional high school environment to earn their high school diploma. Located at 12380 Pine Springs, Options opened its doors along with all other SISD schools on July 19, 2007. Dr. Sue Shook Elementary School is currently under construction in Horizon City. Students started the school year in portable buildings behind Capt. Walter E. Clarke Middle School until the new campus is completed. It is scheduled to open in January. Chester E. Jordan Elementary School students are housed at Spec. Raphael Hernando III Middle School until its facility is completed. The 2004 Bond is costing SISD taxpayers less than originally expected thanks to matching funds from the State of Texas through the Instructional Facilities Allotment and Existing Debt Allotment. State matching funds are paying 70% of the cost for SISDs $188,680,000 Bond issue. While an average SISD homeowner at the time of the bond ordinance ($84,691) expected to pay more than $150 per year in additional taxes to cover the bonds, the matching funds from the state means SISD taxpayers are paying less than a third of that expected cost. "When the District went out for the 2004 Bond issue of $188,680,000, the potential impact to the taxpayers was an additional 17.87¢ per $100.00 valuation," said Mary Benham, SISD Assistant Superintendent for Business Services. "All the bonds have now been issued and the impact to the taxpayers was 7¢ at its highest and the impact is now at 4.74¢ per $100.00 valuation." Other 2004 Bond projects include Heating Ventilation, Air Conditioning upgrades to the office areas, media center and computer labs for the following schools: Elementary Benito Martinez Campestre Escontrias H.D. Hilley Helen Ball Horizon Hueco Myrtle Cooper OShea Keleher Robert R. Rojas Sierra Vista Middle Schools Capt. Walter E. Clarke Salvador H. Sanchez Socorro Middle William D. Slider High Schools Socorro High School Montwood High School In addition to these projects, the new Socorro Independent School District Service Center located on the corner of Rojas Dr. and Bill Burnet Dr. is currently under construction and is expected to be completed by the end of the year. Also included in the 2004 Bond are recently completed additions at Montwood High School for Career and Technology facilities and a weight room and training room. Another addition underway at Hueco Elementary School will house a computer lab and expanded instructional areas. 2 Building for the The Proposal Based on the committees recommendations, the following new facilities, renovations and expansions will be proposed. These Pre-Kindergarten centers would allow Socorro ISD to offer open enrollment to all SISD residents. Lighting Existing High School Athletic Fields Lighting Socorro ISDs existing athletic fields will allow for extended use of these facilities and provide added safety for our students. Refrigerated Air Conditioning A facilities assessment has identified 21 campuses throughout Socorro ISD which would receive refrigerated air conditioning. Alternatives State Instructional Facilities Allotment Program (IFA) The State of Texas has appropriated funds to help fast growing school districts like Socorro by paying a high percentage of their bond debt. Socorro ISD has already received 70% of eligible bond principal and interest payments from the state for the 2004 bond issue. Socorro may qualify for 60% in state aid for this bond election. That means that the local taxpayers may only have to support as little as 40% of this $397,046,015.00 bond issue. The District will continue to apply for future state funds to ease the burden on local taxpayers. IFA funding is available now. There is no guarantee that it will be available in the future. 2004 Bond Rates New facilities are needed to accommodate the increase in enrollment. Other alternatives to accommodate the anticipated overcrowding could include: 4 increased class size 4 significant changes in attendance boundaries to move students from the overcrowded schools to less crowded schools 4 busing students to less crowded facilities 4 use of portable classrooms 4 split sessions (day and evening) 4 return to the use of multi-track scheduling Citizens Oversight Committee A citizens oversight committee will review all facilities planning in Socorro ISD. This committee acts as a means of involving the public to assure accountability, insuring that taxpayers dollars are used effectively, efficiently & equitably. They will serve in an advisory capacity to the SISD Board of Trustees to assure a fiscally responsible, timely & educationally appropriate building program. Senior Citizens: Homeowners (65+) with frozen taxes will not have an increase in their tax bill for school bonded indebtedness. The school which opened in 2006 with a freshman class of 121 students was awarded the ranking in its first year. Mission ECHS students also outscored the seven other Early College High School Programs in Texas. It was exhilarating and it makes us feel proud to be one of just a few schools that were ranked as Exemplary, says Sophomore Zyanya Dickey. We were hoping for good scores. Now we are just going to keep working hard and giving 110%. An Exemplary rating means all student groups on the campus had 90% or more of their students pass each subject of the TAKS. Mission students scored 96% in Math and 100% in Reading. We are proud of the effort put forth by our students and teachers. We have students who are very dedicated and teachers who challenge them to exceed our high expectations, says Dr. Armando Aguirre, Mission ECHS Principal. We are also proud that so many of our students were commended. This is our first year and its a credit to our students, parents and teachers. In its second year, Mission ECHS now has 250 students enrolled with the goal of completing their high school work and earning college credit at the same time. Our sophomore students set their expectations very high and they believe in the schools mission, says Frank Savina, Math Chair at Mission ECHS, of the schools first class of students. They came in from different schools and it was good to see them forming a strong team. This years freshman class knows what they have to do and are up to the challenge. Savina who is proud of the effort of the students also praised the work of the teachers and staff at Mission. From BCIS to biology, they all supported our efforts. Even though those subjects were not tested, they gave us full support and its great to be part of this team, says Savina. In addition to Missions Exemplary rating, five SISD campuses were Recognized by the TEA. The Recognized campuses are: Loma Verde Elementary School Vista Del Sol Elementary School Col John O. Ensor Middle School Salvador Sanchez Middle School William D. Slider Middle School Dr. Armando Aguirre, MECHS Principal Montwood student's mural on display Through Ernesto Grados eyes, his future depends on finishing high school and going on to college. Now, everyone who passes by the murals that run along I-10 East will also see his dedication to school. The 17-yearold was one of several local artists selected to paint one of the pillars that support US Highway 54. Over the course of two weeks, Ernesto worked alongside other artists to complete the artwork that was part of the Centro De Salud Familiar Career and MHS junior, Ernesto Grado, puts the final touches on his mural. Technology competition called El Paso Through My Eyes. In a three week period, Grados Through My Eyes submission went from art concept to reality. His depiction of UTEP shows how higher education leads to success. Being selected was a great accomplishment for someone who has been studying art for less than two years. I just discovered art about a year ago when I started taking classes, says Grado. I want to go to college and study art. I would like to be an art teacher. This mural will be his first public art project, which measures more than six feet high, and it will be his first using a different medium. Ive just done drawings, and Im not experienced using spray cans on a project this big, says the high school junior from Montwood High School. His graffiti style mural, which shows UTEP buildings wrapped around the pillar, has special meaning for him. It shows that even if you started from the bottom, you can make your way to college. The mural shows the mistakes we make, but that we have to recover from them to move up, says Grado. Hes a really good student and artist. His level of appreciation of art is at a college level, says Grados art instructor, Ivan Hernandez. I had him last year and started an advanced class this year for him and other students who were interested. SHS Health Academy welcomes freshman class Two Socorro High School students are preparing for a challenging year. Senior Daniel Miranda is finishing his last year in the Health Professions Academy (HPA) while freshman Ruben Arrellano is starting his career in HPA. They are among the nearly 300 students that make up the Health Professions Academy at Socorro High School. On September 13, 2007, HPA held its 14th annual ceremony to recognize student achievement and introduce its new class of freshmen. During the ceremony at the Socorro High School Auditorium, 17-yearDaniel Miranda old Daniel was recognized as Health Occupations Students of America (HOSA) Vice President, and 14-year-old Arrellano had the opportunity to don his white coat for the first time. The white lab coat is a visual and powerful symbol of health care, and of healing, says Elva Vazquez, HPA Leader and Health Science Instructor. Our students are very motivated and have a tremendous will to succeed. Most already have a sense of pursuing a career in health care. With HPA, they will find out if they really want to continue on. I wanted a challenge and I had heard good things about this program, says Arrellano, who comes from Sanchez Middle School. Plus I want to pursue a career in the health field. Arrellano is one of 100 incoming freshmen students selected for the program. Every year, the program receives about 300 applications from 8th grade students throughout the district and only accepts a third of students. The academy was established in 1992 and serves the entire district, pulling in students from all four high school feeder patterns. The Health Professions Academy is a "school within-a school at Socorro High School. HPA prepares students to enter the health care field by offering specialized courses and clinical rotations at area hospitals. The program also partners with other organizations such as the El Paso City/County Health Department, El Paso Community College, Texas Tech University Health Science Center and UTEP. This program really prepares you for college and beyond, says Miranda who plans on going to St. Marys University to study Psychology and Spanish. This is the best thing that could hand happened to me in high school. It has helped me both professionally and personally. Our students will go on to college with a strong background in medical terminology, and in clinical skills. Many will have more hands-on experience than college students, added Vazquez. Students were recognized and received their achievement patches for volunteer community services, math and biology honors and leadership skills. To close the ceremony, all students recited the HOSA Creed. th Socorro High Schools HPA held its 14 annual ceremony to recognize student achievement and introduce its new class of freshmen. SISD GED Graduates prepare for brighter future With three sons, Noe Hernandez wanted to set an example for his children as well as secure a better future for his family. If you dont have a high school diploma, you cant get a better a job, says Hernandez. Im very happy that I finished and that my family is celebrating with me. Noe Hernandez with his son Rubin Hernandez. Hernandez, who is already back in school to become an HVAC technician, was among more than 40 adults who received their GED at a ceremony at the Socorro Independent School District Board Room on August 30th. The group spent the past months attending the various classes offered by the Socorro ISD Community Education program which enabled them to earn their GED. It is amazing what these men and women have accomplished, said SISD Superintendent Dr. Sylvia P. Atkinson. Most of the people here tonight have raised their families, worked full time jobs and yet they made the extra effort to go to school and earn their GED. Their commitment to education in spite of these challenges makes them excellent role models. Hernandez and his classmates were congratulated by Dr. Atkinson, Socorro ISD Board Trustee George Salas and Socorro High School Principal, Miguel Serrano, who recalled his time with the Community Education program and its impact on students. This makes a positive impact on the lives of students and their families. When I taught courses in the early 1990s one of my students was also taking the GED course and now he is one of my teachers at Socorro High School, says Serrano who has been teaching at Socorro ISD for 15 years. This is a springboard for better things. Salas echoed the statement and encouraged them to be life long learners. Its a very special moment but you shouldnt stop. Every step you take is an example for your children to follow, said Salas, a recent UTEP graduate. You should be very proud of this and I hope that you keep learning. MHS Senior selected as Gates Millenium Scholar Montwood High School graduate Arturo M. Escajeda was selected as a 2007 Gates Millennium Scholar. The annually renewable scholarship will fund Arturo's education from his undergraduate career through the masters and doctoral levels. Arturo is one 1,000 students across the nation to receive the scholarship. All nominees are selected based Arturo M. Escajeda upon academic achievement, community service, and leadership. Arturo is attending Boston University in the fall and heads to East Coast in June for a summer orientation. It will pay for bachelors and masters degree and up to the doctoral level, says Arturo who is still considering college majors. I was surprised at being selected. 3 SISD students selected for Mayors student program El Paso Mayor John Cook announces the latest class of The Mayors 100 Teens for the year 2007-2008. Among this years class members are 27 SISD students. They along with 73 area students are the second generation of the program, which is targeted at recognizing youth within the El Paso community who have overcome adversity, provided service to others, achieved something significant and who lead by example. Joining the group is El Dorado Senior Daniel Bell who was nominated by the schools Student Activities Director Monica Bustillos. I had heard about the program last year, but I did not know she nominated me, says Bell who is the Student Council Treasurer, a member of National Honor Society and Business Professionals of America. He along with fellow SISD students will take part in various activities coordinated through the Mayors office such as Feed the Homeless and the Mayors Thanksgiving Dinner. Orientation for this next generation of The Mayors 100 Teens will take place later this fall, with the Teens being involved in the program for one year. Activities in which the Teens participate in throughout the year include major public events, public speaking opportunities and community action/service projects and initiatives. On Friday, September 21, 100 backpacks filled with school supplies were delivered to students at the lower valley school by members of some of El Pasos largest employers. Coordinated through Communities in Schools, Echostar, Dish Network and Wal-Mart joined forces to help out children through the area including students at HD Hilley. This is an excellent opportunity for diverse organizations to invest in El Pasos future leaders, says David Jackson, Dish Network General Manager. To see the faces of the kids was worth the long hours getting the backpacks ready, said Jorge Ochoa from Echostar who joined other representatives handing out the backpacks to 1st grade students. In addition to the backpacks, students got pencils, pens, crayons, markers, folders, glue sticks and other basic necessities. Im very happy that there are different organizations that think about our kids. Im also appreciative of all of their time and effort because its all for the childrens benefit, said Hilley Principal Esther Gonzalez. 4 SISD schools commemorate 9-11 From parades to solemn flag ceremonies, students and staff across the Socorro Independent School Districts showed they will never forget September 11, 2001. On the sixth anniversary of the tragic event, schools held commemoration ceremonies to remember the victims and heroes of that day and to honor the men and women who serve their country. At Americas High School, the commemoration event included a performance of Taps played by Americas alum, Carlos Magallanes. With members of the cheer team and GEMZ dancers at attention, the American Flag was raised by the schools NROTC and manning the ceremonial bell was Cadet Lt. Commander Jeremy Webb. This unites everybody, said Brittney Barton, Student Body President. We are recognizing heroes in our country who served in the past or are currently serving our country. Following the ceremony and the closing remarks by Americas Principal Mary Ross, the flag was lowered to half-staff. At Chester E. Jordan Elementary, students in all grades celebrated American heroes and held a special tribute to local firefighters. The 5th grade class led the school in the American and Texas pledges which was followed by a presentation on 9-11 that was broadcasted in all the classrooms. Following a moment of silence, the entire 3rd grade kicked off the indoor parade and picked up classes as they headed outside. Participating in the celebration were Lt. Frank Gallegos, Fst. Willie Langfeldt, and Fire Fighter Vicente Lopez who were honored by the students including Devante Carter who told them I dont call you firefighter, I call you my hero. We had five 3rd grade students, Alyssa Tapia, Jazzy Trevino, Exodis Ward, Cassandra Terrazas and Devante, read their essays to the firefighters. Their essays reflected a great sense of appreciation, respect and gratitude, says Marivel Macias, Assistant Principal at Jordan Elementary. All of our students and teachers did an outstanding job showing their patriotism. At Hurshel Antwine, students selected books that dealt with Sept 11th with topics ranging from President Bush to the Muslim religion. In addition, classes discussed how Sept. 11th impacted people from all over the world. Students also created posters to show the effects of Sept. 11th on religion and culture. Principal Stacy Sonnier added students Chester E. Jordan Elementary student Thomas Arroyo in the upper grades were asked to create posters to show how the events of Sept. 11th have impacted their lives. At Montwood High School, special guests included members of the military from Fort Bliss and El Paso Fire Departments. The ceremony held in the front of the school also featured performances by senior Avery Segapelli who sang Amazing Grace. At Robert R. Rojas Elementary, students heard from special guest speaker Major Christopher Swift who spoke about his Sept. 11th memories and his experiences in Iraq. I was stationed in Washington state and heading to work, says Swift who is in the US Practical Nurse Corps at William Beaumont Army Medical Center. I arrived at the base and no one knew yet what had happened. Students also saw photos Maj. Swift took while in Iraq. Assistant Principal Chelaine Marion also spoke about visiting New York following the attacks and seeing the memorials. It was an experience I will never forget. El Dorado students picked for Red Bull Art Competition A class project from two El Dorado High School students will be on display in Chicago for a national art show. Juniors Eric Lopez and Monica Gongaware spent countless hours designing and manipulating Red Bull cans to create sculptures that were accepted into the Red Bull Art of the Can exhibition. Eric and Monica have been interviewed and will also have their work published along with their bios, says El Dorado High School Art Instructor Candace Printz. This is a great event to participate in and it will be a nice addition to a resume, that they did artwork for a major, wellknown company. Out of more than 100 entries, Erics piece entitled Koi and Monicas Red Bull House were among El Dorado junior Eric Lopez with Koi sculpture. the 39 entries selected for the Chicago exhibition that will open on November 9th with a special reception at the River East Center. Along with being on display for two weeks in Chicago, their pieces will be part of the companys permanent art collection. They are also eligible for the grand prize which will be an all-expense paid trip for two to Art Basel, the worlds premier modern and contemporary art fair in Basel, Switzerland. I was surprised. One of my teachers congratulated me and I didnt know why, says Monica on first learning about her selection into the Chicago show. At first, I thought it was another class project, but then I got into it and it was fun. Monicas creation was a house complete with Red Bull trees and a tab top roof. I would search for empty cans everywhere and would take bags full of cans home so I could work on this. Her classmate, Eric, had cuts and scrapes to go along with his entry. I had burns from the glue gun, but it didnt matter. This was for the experience and learning how to work with the material. I didnt expect that I had a chance to be selected. A panel of judges and art critics will determine the top winners based on the following criteria: Creative Concept (overall idea behind the piece), Conceptual Execution (how well did the piece translate the concept idea), and Construction (how well the piece is made/ special effort/ unusual medium). In addition, El Dorado graduate Kim A-Rums work of art was chosen to help promote the competition. Her entry of a Red Bull wig and eyelashes will be used in marketing materials and on display at public venues. These pieces along with eight others were submitted to the competition by El Dorado High School Art Instructor Candace Printz. Printz had challenged her students In January 2007 to develop art pieces only using Red Bull cans. With the student body and staff helping provide more than 1000 empty cans, 11 students worked before and after school to complete their projects. By the end of February, the students had put their sculptures on display at a local El Paso gallery before sending the pieces to be judged for the Red Bull competition. Printz was notified of the students selection in July. She plans on submitting the work of the eight students for Red Bulls Houston exhibition. We had some amazing pieces that did not make it the first time around that I'm sure will get in to the next show, adds Printz. SISD Foundation awards nine scholarships The Socorro ISD Excellence in Education Foundation awarded scholarships to students from Americas, El Dorado, Montwood and Socorro high schools. This is the second year the SISD Foundation awarded three scholarships. The Foundation also handed out six other scholarships. El Dorado graduates Ivan Ortega and Vanessa Lopez were congratulated by El Dorado Principal Nora Paugh. This years recipients of the W.G. Barber Scholarship worth $4000 are Celeste Jacquez from Americas High School, Vanessa Lopez from El Dorado High School and Ariana Nicole Dobbins. All three will pursue careers in education. Celeste is planning on becoming a kindergarten teacher, Vanessa would like to teach at the elementary level and Ariana would Liliana Arriola like to follow in her mothers footsteps and become a counselor. Three students were awarded the SISD Excellence in Foundation scholarship worth $1000. Kishma Trejo from Socorro High School received one of three awards. Two of the awards were given to Montwood students, Liliana and Roberto Arriola who are twins and will be heading to different universities in the fall. Liliana will be studying speech therapy at Our Lady of the Lake and her brother will study music at North Texas University. This will help pay for tuition and a computer, says Liliana. Kishma Trejo was also selected as a recipient of one of two $500 scholarships from the Dr. Sue Shook Scholarship Fund. The second recipient was Ivan Ortega from El Dorado High School. I was surprised when I was notified about the scholarship, say Ivan who plans on studying graphic design at UTEP. The Foundation also selected Socorro graduate Ytzel Arunda for the Marian McQuiddy Scholarship which is awarded to student who will pursue a degree in journalism. Socorro HS Students Complete Texas Bunkhouse When parents of some Socorro High School students asked What did you do at school today? for some of them the answer was Building a log cabin. They nicknamed the project the "Texas Bunkhouse". For two years, a group of students worked together to craft the cabin. Drafting students designed it, Welding students constructed the frame, it was wired by Electrical students and Carpentry students did all the woodworking, including rustic pine knot flooring. Media technology students videotaped the entire process. Their hard work paid off earlier this year when they completed the one-bedroom, one-bath log cabin. Some of the students were sophomores and freshmen when the project started in 2005, like senior Manuel Calderon who remembers spending his days working on the cabin during El Pasos hot summer. It was hard work, but we enjoyed it, says the 17-yearold. This project really helped us expand our skills. I am really proud of our work. We showed that we can do this if we work hard. Calderon worked on the cabins inside walls, siding, cabinets and porch. Joining the project last year was junior Daniel Tellez who joined the Building Trades class his sophomore year to develop his building skills. I wanted to do something more challenging, says Tellez who had been doing woodworking since middle school. An interior shot of the Texas Bunkhouse cabin kitchen area. John Kilgore with some of the Socorro High students who helped build the cabin. For this project, I worked on the roof, cabinets, the tile in the kitchen and installing the air conditioners. I hope this will help me find a career in construction when I graduate. In addition to learning about roofing and installing tile, the students also had to do some problem solving to get the job done. Sometimes we didnt have the right products, but the students used what we had and adapted them to work for our project. We also had to learn how to make our own color stain for the wood, says John Kilgore, Advanced Building Trades Instructor. I was impressed with what these kids accomplished. The cabin turned out better than I imagined. The 12 foot by 20 foot cabin will be up for auction with the proceeds going back into the program. The Texas Bunkhouse turned out so well, they are already planning another cabin. Career Day Sparks Students Interests Students at Helen Ball Elementary School spent a recent Thursday considering what they want to be when they grow up. People in all kinds of careers from SISD Superintendent to law enforcement to healthcare were at the school on September 20th to give students an inside look into various professions. Students also Xavier Alegria heard from members of the US Border Patrol, El Paso Fire Department, El Paso Police Department, US Army and Navy, SISD Police K-9 Unit, Texas Rio Grande Legal Aid, Life Ambulance and the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department. The career fair was open to all students from Pre K through 5th. The older students had an opportunity to participate in a question and answer presentation with Socorro ISD Superintendent Dr. Sylvia P. Atkinson. It was a real treat for me to spend some time discussing college and career choices with our students. The sky is the limit if they only commit their heart and soul to what they want out of life. I remember one of my best principals, Lynn Couchman, telling me that sacrifices today will only multiply the opportunities for success in the future. I feel truly blessed to be here in Socorro ISD with such wonderful staff members, incredible parents, amazing community members, and fantastic students. It was a busy afternoon for the 1,050 students who heard from Burlington Northern Santa Fe Police Captain Luis Maris who demonstrated how the railroad uses trained dogs like his partner Ika. The also heard from Maj. Rob McCormick who spoke about his experiences jumping from planes and serving in Iraq. Second grade teacher Veronica Martinez says the presentation by Maj. McCormick helped tie in her classroom lessons. Its a nice tie-in to our work on different cultures. He talked about working with translators and working in Iraq. It related really well with what we were learning in class, said Martinez. Outside the school, students were able to climb inside an ambulance and witness how Border Patrol agents use bikes in their job. Inside, students heard from Danny Cervantes from the Texas Parks and Wildlife who asked third graders about some of the animals that call the El Paso desert home. Every grade level got one hour to meet with different presenters, says Cindy Yeager, Helen Ball counselor. We have booths inside and outside the school. We want our students to be aware of what is available to them. Students bid farewell to Robert Rojas Carrying signs and holding balloons, the student body of Robert R. Rojas Elementary said goodbye to the man in the white cowboy hat. Robert R. Rojas passed away at the age of 80 on September 3 and made one last visit to the school that bears his name. The Rojas family says his last request was that his funeral procession would drive past the school before he was laid to rest. Robert R. Rojas Elementary School students Rosaria Garcia, Susanna Aguilera and Margarita Munoz say goodbye to Mr. Rojas. This is appropriate having the students say goodbye, says Rojas Principal Art Gonzalez. He was always here visiting, offering help and supporting our students and our school. On the morning of September 7th shortly before noon, each class one by one made its way to the front of the school to pay their respects. With Well Miss You signs and blue balloons, the students lined up to watch the funeral procession. As the cavalcade of limousines made its way down the street, more than 600 students, teachers and staff bowed their heads and whispered a quiet thank you to the man who served the District for more than 20 years as a Board Trustee. Mr. Rojas dedicated much of his life in service to Socorro Schools, said SISD Superintendent of Schools Dr. Sylvia P. Atkinson. He was very involved at Rojas Elementary School. He and his wife Frances also would attend groundbreakings and dedications of our newest schools. He will be missed. In 1987, the Socorro ISD Board of Trustees honored Rojas for his dedication to the children of Socorro by naming a school after him. Robert R. Rojas Elementary opened in 1987 and will celebrate its 20th anniversary this year. Family and friends were on hand to witness the respect and admiration both the children and adults demonstrated for Mr. Rojas who spent decades working and living in the Socorro community. As the procession made its way to Saints Peter and Paul Church for the mass, hundreds of blue balloons drifted to the sky as a final farewell. Highly Qualified Teachers Socorro ISD only hires teachers who are Highly Qualified for their assigned grade level or content area. The No Child Left Behind (NCLB) Act gives you the right to know the professional qualifications of the classroom teachers who instruct your children. You can request the following additional information concerning your childs teacher(s): Ø Whether the teacher meets the state qualifications and licensing criteria for the grades and subjects he or she teaches Ø The teachers college major, whether the teacher has any advanced degrees, and the field of discipline of the certification or degree If you would like to receive any of this information, please contact your childs campus principal. 5 M ore than 1,700 seniors capped the end of their school careers at Socorro ISDs four high schools. Thousands of family and friends watched from the stadium stands as SISD Board Trustees, Superintendent of Schools Dr. Sylvia P. Atkinson and SISD administrators handed out diplomas. We are very proud of what our 2007 graduates have achieved. said Dr. Sylvia P. Atkinson. From national and state honors in everything from fine arts to sports and a total of more than $24 million dollars in scholarships, they have earned our admiration. Americas Valedictorian Gabriel Mendoza alone has earned $1 million in scholarships and grants. Less than three months later, more than 150 students from each high school along with teachers and administrators made their way to that same stage to start SISDs Summer 2007 Commencement Exercises. The rainstorm that hovered over the SISD Student Activities Complex did not dampen the spirits of these students who worked hard to make AHS Valedictorian, Gabriel Mendoza it to this celebration. 'Im nervous and Im anxious to get my diploma, said El Dorado graduate Esdenia Martinez, as she waited quietly for the ceremonies to begin. It means a lot to me, it's a dream come true. Tonight is something special for me and for my family. SISD Superintendent of Schools Dr. Sylvia P. Atkinson, thanked these graduates for setting the standard in the Districts Summer Access to College (SAC) Program. Sixty-seven students took advantage of the program which helped students reach their goal of graduating from high school and attending college. Working in conjunction with El Paso Community College (EPCC), Socorro ISD provided intensive tutoring to ensure students passed the TAKS test and prepared for college. Its a privilege for me to be here and serve in this district. said SISD Board President Charles Garcia, Socorro has great teachers, great students and great families. I give credit as much to the families as I do to the students here tonight. Montwood graduate Bronson Ortiz was proud of his accomplishment, My graduation means never giving up and always holding my head up high. -Dr. Sylvia P. Atkinson, Superintendent of Schools The class of 2007 has left quite a legacy to live up to. Their teachers and administrators have given them the tools they need to succeed and now its their turn to go out there and show the world. Los estudiantes de Mission obtuvieron 96% in Matemáticas y 100% in Lectura. 11 Reuniones Comunitarias La Dra. Sylvia P.
