There is danger in “criminalizing” all immigrants. While I come from a long line of Italian immigrants, I didn’t know one person with ties to the Cosa Nostra. I certainly didn’t see a criminal element in the parishioners at St. Louis Catholic Church. I believe it is a dangerous tendency to group or cluster immigrants into the tattooed criminals we see in our nightly news on TV, or graphically portrayed in the morning newspaper. One of the guiding lights on immigration established for this country can be seen in the words on the Statue of Liberty: “Give me your tired, your poor, Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free, The wretched refuse of your teeming shore. Send these, the homeless, tempest-tossed, to me: I lift my lamp beside the golden door.” I’m not sure where our country is going right now. I don’t know if Arizona, or Alabama, have it right. I’m not sure if Democrats or Republicans have it right. I know the folks at St. Louis Catholic Church are doing something right! “America! America! God shed His grace on thee ...” Alvin G. Sandrini, former superintendent of the Norris School District, is retired after serving most recently as executive director of the Sacramento-based Small School Districts’ Association. It was published in a newspaper. I hope everyone can appreciate it in this Advent season, that calls us to rethink our lives in the light of gospel values. Enjoy Alvin’s reflections about who we are as a parish (He did not even know about the incredible Family-to-Family program for 700 families and 1800 children.) You can see the whole article: http://www.bakersfield.com/opinion/community/ x1347873597/Thanks-for-America-in-all-of-its-manybeautiful-colors-tongues ********************************* Why are we going to Mass on Thanksgiving? It isn’t on a Sunday? My question went unanswered, as my wife often ignores useless, petty questions. I, of course, discovered the answer within minutes of entering St. Louis Catholic Church. We were in Miami, Fla., sharing a favorite holiday with family. The modern amphitheater-shaped church was filled with several hundred people. We no sooner sat down than the music leader asked us to stand and join her in singing “America the Beautiful.” It was then I knew why we were at Mass. Standing in the back but at the top of the sloping, pewed house of prayer, I could see the faces of most in attendance. “O beautiful for spacious skies, for amber waves of grain ...” Tears welled in my eyes as the beautiful words echoed throughout the church standing as a testimony of love of country exhibited by so many who had come to this country. Haitians, Puerto Ricans, Cubans, Costa Ricans, Panamanians -Americans all -- filled the church with an unmistakable love of country. “America! America! God shed His grace on thee ...” After three verses, a smiling bilingual priest led his flock through Mass -- some of it in English, some in Spanish. His homily began with the words of George Washington, who in 1789 proclaimed the first recognized Thanksgiving Day in the young country.…Would someone please explain to me why many folks today deny the intent of our forefathers identifying our great country as a faith-based entity that recognizes a reliance and relationship to a deity? As we left church , I heard the multicultural, bilingual conversations between family and friends. Discussions related to immigration, amnesty, the Dream Act and illegal aliens, framed in today’s political rhetoric, were muted on this quiet Thanksgiving morning. I grew up in Bakersfield. I’ve been around diverse, emerging populations my entire life. It is difficult to comprehend the immense amount of time, money and energy exercised in trying to build an immigration policy for this country when what we have done in the past seems to have worked. Assimilation and acclimation meant that for immigrants. Where opportunity is met with hard work, a better lifestyle was possible.
