HOSSAM RAMZY - EGYPT'S AMBASSADOR
OF RHYTHM
Born in Cairo, Hossam Ramzy's musical career began early, when at the age of three he
was given his first drum - an Egyptian tabla. His passion for percussion was noted by his
family (many of whom were themselves involved in the arts) who encouraged him to
master his craft by studying with the leading music teachers of Egypt. A move to Saudi
Arabia introduced Hossam to many of the Bedouin tribes who gave the young Hossam
a rich insight into the cultural origins of Middle Eastern music that became the inspiration for many of his later rhythmic directions.
In the mid 1970's he moved to England, and enjoyed great success as a Jazz and Latin
style drummer working with many highly respected Jazz musicians like Andy Shepherd
and Geoff Williams. But, as he began looking for new dimensions of percussive sounds,
he found himself turning full circle, back to his first love, the Egyptian drums, and the
thrilling dance rhythms of the Middle East. The distinctive sound of Hossarri's percussion and the exciting rhythms on his albums caught the imagination of Peter Gabriel who
invited Hossam to perform on his albums 'PASSION' and later 'US'. Hossam went on
to work with many top musicians including Joan Armatrading and Mari Wilson. In 1994
Robert Plant and Jimmy Page (Led Zeppelin) invited Hossam to bring together a band of
Arabian musicians and work on their reunion album 'No Quarter - Unledded' which was
awarded triple platinum. This led to Hossam joining Page and Plant on their historic
reunion 1995/96 tour of the world. Ever since, Hossam has been extensively touring with
various artists, such as Pino Daniele of Italy as well as many of the top class Arabian
Singers like Cbeb Khaled, Rashid Taha, Faudel and Yesim Salkim, the most popular
female singer from Turkey.
To date Hossam has released 17 albums of Egyptian dance and world music, with many
of them dedicated to percussion and rhythms of the world.
He has also collaborated on composing and performing many award-winning film sound
tracks like: Stargate, Wings Of A Dove, The Saint, The Hunchback of Notre Dame,
Stealing Beauty and The Last Temptation Of Christ.

Born in Shobra, Cairo. Mohsen Allaam began his musical career at the age of eight when
he learned to play accordion at school. By the age of 12 he was recognised as a virtuoso
player and asked to play at many Baladi weddings. He recalls having to use a cushion on the
seat so that he could be seen and a box to put his feet on. In 1978 he began working in the
night clubs of the famous Pyramids Street in Cairo, where only top musicians perform, playing with many headline artists such as Ahmed Adaweya, Katkoot El Amir, Khaled Aggag
and Mohammed El Helw. Mohsen's style attracted the attention of some of Cairo's great
dancers such as the legendary Azza Sherif, Hala El Safy, Nelly Fouad and Mervat Badr.
Mohsen Allaam is also a touring artist. His work and musical contributions to many well
known orchestras and artists have taken him across the globe to almost all of the Middle
East, Europe and the USA.
A long term musical relationship with Hossam Ramzy has culminated in this marvellous
collaboration where many dance songs have been chosen to feature Mohsen, as well as
some new compositions especially for the dances brought to you in this album. Enjoy.

1. SANATEIN WANAHAYEL FEEK!
"I have pleaded with you for two years"
I have to admit it. The words are rather sad, but the melody is one of those that just makes
you want to dance. The song is from a movie, in which Egypt's great singer Layla Murad
starred. The song is about a lady who has been pleading with her beloved to return for
the past two years, and her tears have been begging him to come back. You should see
Lucy dancing it sometime.
2. HABIB I BALADI, WE ZAY EL AMAR
"My beloved is Baladi, and is as beautiful as a full moon"
In the full tradition of Baladi playing, Mohsen presents his depth of thought and his agility as an accordion player.
3. BEY-OLOULY TOOBY
"They are telling me to give up loving my beloved"
This song was sung originally by the Lebanese singer Sabah, who came to Cairo in the late
50's, and IS still famous today. The song is about her being told to repent from love, but just
how was she supposed to do that? If even every piece of her clothes adores loving him.
4.AMMOURA
Ammoura is the endearing feminine diminutive word of Amar, which is used to spoil
girls. This is a very groovy dance piece. Particular phrases that are feminine in sound have
been incorporated in this piece.
5. BE TES' AL LEH ALAYYA
"Why are you enquiring about me?"
Another song sung by Fayza Ahmed. It is a playful song saying: Why are you asking how
I am? And saying that you miss seeing my eyes. Since when have you been my love, or
been even aware of what is going on with me. You, who are asking after me, please, have
nothing to do with me.
6. HENNI YA AMAR
"Have mercy. My beloved"
A rather melancholic piece, straight from the depths of the heart asking my beloved to
have mercy and show her love.
7. YAMMAL-AMAR AALBAB
"Mother, the moon is at our door step".
This song was first heard from the late Fayza Ahmed, when she sang it in the film "Tamr
Henna" starring the legendary Naima Akef, the story of a gypsy dancer, who is tired of
the travelling, touring circus life and wants to settle down with a rich man who can keep
her as a lady of the house. A magnificent dance piece. The actual dance clip is available
on the "Stars Of Egypt" video series. There is a strong play on the words in this song,
singing certain words while meaning different things, especially with the word Amar,
which means "Moon", but in Egypt we say "El Amar", meaning the most beautiful person. She is singing that the moon is at the door, lighting its lanterns, while the same pronunciation of the same words spelled differently will mean "My beloved has arrived at
the door step, he lit our nights, should I invite him in???"
8. EL AMAR BALADI
"The Moon is my country" or "My beloved is a Baladi girl"
A lovely, lively up-tempo dance piece, that is full of the Baladi spirit. This is played in the
exact way as in the Baladi weddings of Cairo, by the Mohammed Ali Street musicians.
Sounding strange, off-key and actually disoriented. But that is the way it is supposed to be.

Hossam Ramzy wurde in Kairo geboren. Seine rnusikalische Karriere begann im Alter
von drei Jahren, als ihm seine erste Trommel, eine dgyptische Tabla, geschenkt wurde.
Seine Leidenschaft fur Perkussion wurde von seiner Familie untersriitzt. Einige der
Familienmitglieder sind selbst Kiinstler und so errnutigten sie ihn, bei den bekanntesten
Musiklehrern Agyptens Unterricht zu nehmen. Durch seinen Umzug nach Saudi
Arabien schlof Hossam Bekanntschaft rnit einigen Beduinenstarnmen, was ihm einen tiefen Einblick in die kulturellen Urspriinge der Musik des Nahen Osten gewahrte und fur
ihn eine Inspiration fur seinen spateren Musikstil war.
Mitre der 70er Jahre zog Hossam nach England und hatte dort gro~en Erfolg als Jazzund Latin Drummer. Er spielte mit anerkannten Jazz Musikern wie Andy Shepherd und
Geoff Williams. Als er begann, sich nach einer neuen Richtung in seinem PerkussionSound umzusehen, kam er wieder zuriick zu seiner ersten Liebe, der agyprischen Tabla
und den mitreilienden Tanzrhythmen des Nahen Ostens. Der besondere Sound von
Hossams Perkussion und seine aufregenden Rhythmen auf seinem Album erregte die
Aufmerksamkeit von Peter Gabriel, der ihn einlud auf seinen Alben 'Passion' und 'US'
mitzuwirken. Hossam hat mit weiteren Top-Musikern zusammengearbeitet, wie z. B.
Joan Armatrading und Mari Wilson. 1994 luden Robert Plant und Jimmy Page (Led

• Mohsen Allaam wurde in Shobra, Kairo, geboren. Er begann seine musikalische Karriere
rnit acht Jahren, als er in der Schule Akkordeon spielen lernte. Mit zwolf ~ahren war er
bereits als virtuoser Spieler bekannt und spielte bei vielen Baladi-Hochzeiten, Er kann
sich daran erinnern, daB er auf einem Kissen saB, damit man ihn sehen konnte, seine FuBe
auf eine Kiste gestellt. 1978 begann er in den Nachtclubs der beruhmten Pyramids Street
in Kairo, in denen nur die besten Musiker spielen, aufzutreten. Er spielte zusammen rnit
vielen beruhmten Kunstlern wie Ahmed Adaweya, Katkoot EI Arnir, Khaled Aggag und
Mohammed El Helw. Mohsens Stil findet auch Anerkennung bei einigen von Kairos
bekanntesten Tanzerinnen, wie z. B. der legendaren Azza Sherif, Hala EI Safy, Nelly
Fouad und Mervat Badr.
Mohsen Allaam tritt auch irn Ausland auf. Seine Musik und seine Zusammenarbeit mit
vielen bekannten Orchestern und Kiinstlern haben ihn in viele Lander des Nahen Ostens,
Europas und in die USA gefiihrt.

"Ich habe dich zwei Jahre lang angefleht."
Ich muf zugeben, daB die Wone ziemlich traurig sind, aber die Melodie ladt zum Tanzen
ein. Das Lied ist aus einem Film, in dem die beriihrnte agyptische Sangerin Layla Murad
die Hauptrolle spielt, Es handelt von einer Frau, die ihren Geliebten zwei Jahre lang
angefleht hat, zu ihr zuriickzukehren. Ihre Tranen haben ihn gebeten zuruckzukommen,
Sie sollten einmal sehen, wenn Lucy diesen Tanz tanzt.
2. HABIB I BALADI, WE ZAY EL AMAR
"Baladi ist meine Geliebte, sie ist so schon wie der Vollmond."
In der Tradition des Baladi spiel end, zeigt Mohsen die Tiefe seiner Gedanken und seine
Geschicklichkeit als Akkordeonspieler.
3. BEY-OLOULY TOOBY
"Sie sagen mir, ich soli aufhoren meinen Geliebten zu lieben."
Dieses Lied wurde urspriinglich von der libanesischen Sangerin Sabah gesungen, die in
den spaten 50igern nach Kairo kam und he ute noch beruhrnt ist. Das Lied handelt davon,
daB ihr gesagt wird, sie sollte ihre Liebe bereuen, aber wie sollte sie das tun? Wenn sogar
jedes ihrer Kleidungssnicke davon schwarrnt in ihn verliebt zu sein.
4.AMMOURA

"Mutter, der Mond ist auf unserer Turschwelle."
Dieses Lied wurde zuerst von der verstorbenen Fayza Ahmed in dem Film "Tamr
Henna" gesungen, in dem die legendare Naima Akef die Hauptrolle spielte. Er handelt
von einer Zigeunertanzerin, die das unstete Zirkusleben satt hat und sich einen reichen
, Mann angeln will, urn nur noch Hausherrin zu sein. Dies ist ein ausgezeichnetes Stuck
zurn Tanzen. Der Tanzclip ist erhaltlich in der "Stars of Egypt" Video-Serie.
In dies em Lied sind ausgepragte Wonspiele zu horen, es werden bestimmte Wone gesungen, wahrend andere Dinge gemeint werden. Das Wort" Amar" bedeutet "Mond ", aber
in Agypten sagen wir "EI Arnar", das "die/der Schonste " bedeutet. Sie singt, daB der
Mond an der Tur ist und seine Laterne anziindet. Die gleiche Aussprache anders
geschriebener Worte bedeutet: "Der Geliebte steht an der Tiirschwelle. Er hat die Nachte
erhellt, soil ich ihn einladen hereinzukommen???"

"Der Mond ist mein Land" oder "Meine Geliebte ist ein Baladi-Madchen"
Ein nette, lebhafte Tanzmelodie voller Baladi-Atmosphare. Sie wird genauso gespielt, wie
Yon den Musikern der Mohammed Ali Street bei Baladi-Hochzeiten in Kairo. Das Lied
hart sich seltsam an, wie in falscher Tonart und verwirrt, aber so soil es sein.

su historica re-union y gira mundial de 1995/96. Desde entonces, Hossam ha permanecido dando giras por muchos paises con varios artistas, tales como Pino Daniele de Italia,
asi como muchos de los principales cantantes arabes como Cheb Khaled, Rashid Taha,
Faudel y Yesim Salkim, la voz femenina mas popular de Turquia. Hasta la fecha, Hossam
ha publicado 17 albumes de danza egipcia y rrnisica popular y tradicional, con muchos de
ellos dedicados a la percusion y a los ritmos del mundo.
Tarnbien ha colaborado componiendo e interpretando la rrnisica de peliculas ganadoras de
premios como: Stargate, Wings Of A Dove, El Santo, El jorobado de Notre-Dame,
Stealing Beauty y La ultima tentaci6n de Cristo.
DE EGIPTO
Nacido en el Cairo, su carrera musical ernpezo temprano, cuando a los tres alios recibio su
primer tambor: una tabla egipcia. Su familia se dio cuenta de su pasion por la percusion
(muchos de ellos estaban involucrados en las artes), y le animaron a perfeccionar su arte
estudiando con los principales profesores de rnusica de Egipto. Su traslado a Arabia Saudi
Ie dio a Hossam la oportunidad de conocer a muchas de las tribus beduinas, las cuales Ie
dieron al joven Hossam una rica cornprension de los origenes culturales de la rruisica de
Oriente Medio, y fue la inspiracion de muchas de sus direcciones ritmicas posteriores.
MOHSEN
ALLAAM:
Nacido en Shobra, el Cairo, Mohsen Allaam cornenzo su carrera musical a la edad de
ocho alios, cuando aprendio a tocar el acordeon en la escuela. Cuando tenia 12, fue reconocido como un virtuoso y Ie pidieron que tocara en muchas bodas Baladi. EI recuerda
tener que poner un cojin en el asiento para que pudiera ser visto, y una caja para colocar
sus pies encima. En 1978 ernpezo a trabajar en clubs nocturnos de la famosa Calle de las
Pirarnides de el Cairo, donde solo tocan los mejores rmisicos, tocando con muchos artistas famosos como Ahmed Adaweya, Katkoot EI Amir, Khaled Aggag y Mohammed EI
Helw. EI estilo de Mohsen atrajo la atencion de algunos de los grandes bailarines de el
Cairo como ellegendario Azza Sherif, Hala EI Safy, Nelly Fouad y Mervat Badr.
A mitad de la decada de los 70 se traslado a Inglaterra, y obtuvo un gran exito como percusionista de Jazz y de rruisica latina trabajando con muchos rmisicos de Jazz de gran

hecho de decirle que se arrepienta de amar, pero ,como se sup one que tiene que hacer
eso? Si incluso cada trozo de su ropa adora amarle.
4.AMMOURA
Ammoura es un diminutive femenino afectivo de "Amar", que se usa para mimar alas
chicas. Esta es una pieza de danza muy moderna. Frases particulares que son femeninas
en sonido, han sido incorporadas en esta pieza.

Esta cancion fue cantada primero por la fallecida Fayza Ahmed, cuando la canto en la
pelicula "Tamr Henna" protagonizada por la legendaria Naima Akef, la historia de una
bailarina gitana que estaba cansada de viajar y de la vida del circa con sus giras artisticas,
y queria establecerse con un hombre rica que la pudiera manterner como la senora de la

can cion; cantar ciertas palabras mientras significan casas diferentes, especial mente con la
