INTERVIEW WITH MEMBERS OF THE HIP HOP BAND VIOLADORES DEL VERSO BEFORE THEIR FIRST SHOW IN THE UK.

GENERALLY RECOGNIZED as being the
best rap group in Spanish, Violadores del
Verso, received us at the offices of Rap Solo,
their own production company with recording
studio and shop included. They are ordinary
people, from the same district, whose raw
style and libertarian philosophy has led them
to conquer thousands of souls in Spain and
South America. Favourite sons of their homeland in Zaragoza, they advise that ‘the best is
yet to come’. On 2 May they will be appearing
in London (at the O2 Academy in Islington)
and on 8 May in Edinburgh (The Picture
House). It will be the first tour of a Spanish
Hip Hop group in the United Kingdom. Kase
O, Hate and Lírico as MCs, directed by R de
Rumba, DJ and producer, make up this prime
example of Hispanic Hip Hop. Monumental
words and music that tell of everyday and spiritual events. A rap that is hardcore and dark, an
apology for peace and sustained adoration of
the pleasures of life. Always in evolution, but
carrying the same stamp. Have a look at this
orgy of rhymes and rhythms. Don’t overlook

COMÚNMENTE RECONOCIDOS como
el mejor grupo de rap en español, Violadores del Verso, nos recibió en la oficina
de Rap Solo, su propia productora con
estudio de grabación y tienda incluidos.
Son gente común, de barrio, cuyo estilo
crudo y filosofía libertaria les ha llevado
a conquistar miles de almas en España y
Sudamérica. Hijos predilectos de su tierra,
Zaragoza, avisan de que ‘Lo mejor está por
venir’. El próximo 2 de Mayo actuarán en
Londres (O2 Academy Islington) y el 8 en
Edimburgo (The Picture House). Será la
primera gira de Hip Hop español en Reino
Unido. Kase O, Hate y Lírico como Mc´s,
dirigidos por R de Rumba, DJ y productor,
componen el máximo exponente del Hip
Hop hispano. Letras y rimas monumentales que hablan de lo cotidiano y lo espiritual. Rap ‘hardcore’ y oscuro, apología de
la paz y adoración sostenida de los placeres de la vida. Siempre en evolución, pero
con un mismo sello. Asómate a esta bacanal de rimas y ritmos, no pases por alto a

BABYLON MAGAZINE: Did the Presente 06/07 tour mark the
step from being known to being really known?
RUMBA: Since that tour we have started to play in bigger
venues, with better equipment and more technicians, but it has
all been very gradual.
LIRICO: The same, if you look at after the launch of the disc
(Vivir para Contarlo), but it has been an evolution over many
years, many concerts.
BM: Moving on to 2008, the Defensores tour in South America.
How was that experience?
RUMBA: We were visiting new places like Argentina and Santo
Domingo. It was incredible. Also in Brazil, Chile, Mexico and in
Colombia. In Medellín it was amazing to see how Hip Hop has
helped many youngsters to escape from the violence.
KASE O: Now Hip Hop is very gangsta in general. But in the
US and South America those who have lived real violence don’t
want it. So they see us as being very hard, but without reaching
gangsta level, and we get through to them very well. People realize that the motto of Violadores works: the word is the weapon.
BM: How did it feel being named honorary citizens of Zaragoza?
RUMBA: It’s a great honour, because it’s given by all the representatives of the city, councilors and all that, who voted for us en masse.

KASE O: At first it surprised us, but it’s true that we have
always carried the name of Zaragoza with us. The people were
very happy that we were given it.
BM: What do you like to read?
KASE O: We take a look at everything that falls into our hands.
I would recommend Benedetti. They are people who I have read
once because they make me very jealous, who are really something, like Neruda. I also loved The Count of Montecristo by Alexandre
Dumas. With that one you can’t go wrong. When I read the really
good people I have a great desire to copy them (he says laughing).
Books that talk of the soul and spirituality inspire me a lot.
BM: What process do you follow for composing and writing?
LIRICO: The compilation of phrases is always there. When one
comes to your head you memorize it, write it down, stick it in
your mobile… you are turning over 24 hours a day.
KASE O: It’s good to have a few phrases out there that have occurred on odd days so you can have a base and it’s not all improvisation. Although at times it happens that I set out to write and I cannot
stop, as if the lyrics were already written down, word for word.
BM: What influence has Michael Jackson had on modern music?
LIRICO: As much on music in general, as on rap and ourselves in particular. He has contributed and influenced a great
amount, especially to dancing.
RUMBA: Whoever tells you they have not listened to him is a liar!
BABYLON MAGAZINE: La gira Presente 06/07, ¿supuso pasar de ser conocidos a verdaderamente
reconocidos?
RUMBA: A partir de esa gira sí hemos empezado a
tocar en sitios más grandes, con mejor equipo, más
técnicos, pero ha sido ha sido todo muy gradual.
LÍRICO: Igual sí se notó después del lanzamiento
del disco (Vivir para Contarlo), pero ha sido una evolución de muchos años, de muchos conciertos.
BM: A continuación, en 2008, la gira Defensores,
en Sudamérica. ¿Cómo fue la experiencia?
RUMBA: Estuvimos en sitios nuevos como en
Argentina y Santo Domingo, fue increíble. También Brasil, Chile, México y en Colombia. En
Medellín fue una pasada comprobar cómo con
el Hip Hop muchos jóvenes han conseguido salir de la violencia.
KASE O: Ahora el Hip Hop es muy gangsta, en
general. Pero en EE.UU. y Sudamérica los que
han vivido la violencia de verdad no la quieren.
Entonces nos ven a nosotros que somos duros,
pero sin llegar al gangsta, les entramos muy bien.
La gente se da cuenta de que el lema de Violadores funciona: la palabra es el arma.
BM: ¿Cómo os sentó ser nombrados Hijos predilectos de Zaragoza?
RUMBA: Es un gran reconocimiento, porque
te lo dan todos los representantes de la ciudad,
concejales y tal, que nos votaron en el pleno.
KASE O: Al principio nos extrañó, pero lo cierto
es que hemos llevado siempre el nombre de Zaragoza con nosotros. La gente se alegró mucho
de que nos lo dieran.
BM: ¿Qué os gusta leer?
KASE O: A todo lo que cae en nuestras manos le
echamos un vistazo. Recomendaría a Benedetti.
Son personas que he leído una vez porque me
dan mucha envidia, son una pasada, como Neruda. También me encantó El Conde de Montecristo
de Alejandro Dumas. Con ese no fallas. Cuando
leo a gente muy buena me dan muchas ganas de
copiarlos (risas). Los libros que hablan del alma,
espiritualidad, me inspiran muchísimo.
BM: ¿Qué proceso seguís para componer y escribir?
LÍRICO: La recopilación de frases está siempre
presente. Cuando te viene una a la cabeza, la
memorizas, la escribes, la apuntas en el móvil…
estás maquinando las 24 horas del día.
KASE O: Es bueno tener unas frases por ahí que
se te hayan ocurrido de días sueltos para tener
una base y que no sea todo improvisación. Aunque a veces me pasa de ponerme a escribir y no
poder parar, como si la canción estuviera ya escrita palabra por palabra.
BM: ¿Qué influencia ha tenido Michael Jackson
en la música moderna?
LÍRICO: Tanto a la música en general, como al
rap y también a nosotros en particular. Ha aportado e influenciado muchísimo, al baile sobre todo.
RUMBA: ¡El que diga que no le ha escuchado miente!
INVASIONS
OF BRITAIN
If Violadores del Verso will be disembarking for the first time in their
career in the British Isles this May,
the rappers from Zaragoza are
not the only ones from Spain who
are proposing to take the jump
into the United Kingdom in 2010.
Also appearing for the first time in
the British capital, on May 29, will
be one of the must see groups
from the Spanish musical scene
of the ‘80s, Hombres G. But,
without doubt the most awaited
assault on the islands will be the
one led by Anni B Sweet, hand
in hand with Babylon Magazine.
The singer from Malaga will be
offering a free concert on 6 June
to thousands of people right in the
heart of London, as part of the
festival Taste of Spain; it will come
just after her appearance at Rock
in Río in Madrid.
Si Violadores del Verso desembarcarán en las islas británicas
por primera vez en su carrera
este mes de mayo, los raperos
de Zaragoza no son los únicos
en España que se han propuesto dar el salto hacia Reino Unido
en 2010. También actuará por
primera vez en la capital británica, el 29 de mayo, uno de los
grupos esenciales de la escena
musical española de los años
80, Hombres G. Pero, sin duda,
el alunizaje español más esperado en las islas lo protagonizará
Anni B Sweet, de la mano de
Babylon Magazine. La cantante
malagueña ofrecerá el 6 de junio
un concierto gratuito ante miles
de personas en pleno centro
londinense, en el marco del
festival Taste of Spain; será justo
después de su paso por Rock in
Río, en Madrid.
